Round up on a sunny Sunday
2008-07-13 02:52:00
If ever a couple of stories summed up just how inconsistent the media has been with transfer rumours, here they are, one claims that Adebayor is too expensive for Milan and that the move is off, while the other claims that Arsenal have lowered their asking price and that Adebayor will shortly be joining Milan. I know which one I hope to be true. Adebayor's greasy agent is quoted as saying: &quo

Don't panic doomsayers!
2008-07-12 01:31:00
The transfer merry go round appears to have only just commenced, obviously Samir Nasri has now signed on the dotted line but I would be very surprised if nothing else happened in the next week or two. With our first friendly being Barnet on the 19th of July and our first competitive game being the Champions League qualifier on the 12th August, I'd reckon Arsene would want any signings to have

Nasri signs and more to come?
2008-07-11 03:19:00
Samir Nasri has officially signed for Arsenal, I don't think it was ever really in doubt but it's nice that the deal has now been concluded. Nasri signing surely means that Alex Hleb is about to depart for Barcelona. One can't help but feel that this is a good bit of business for Arsenal, signing a very talented and hungry French international, while shipping out someone who has been

Blatter needs a cork
2008-07-10 04:48:00
There's no stopping Sepp Blatter when it comes to opening his flabby mouth to produce stupid and poorly thought out comments. He almost stupid enough to challenge for a slot on Big Brother, here are his latest efforts talking about Ronaldo's potential movement: "The important thing is, we should also protect the player....If the player wants to play somewhere else, then a solution should be

Gutter press starts up engine
2008-07-08 01:04:00
As pre-season training starts there are still several fairly large question marks hanging over a couple of big names in our squad. The Sun has decided to try to stir things up even more by turning a few meaningless Hleb quotes into a 'Gunners blast shocker'. The Sun claims that the following quote is Hleb having a 'pop' at Fabregas: “When we get scoring opportunities, Fabregas is much more

A cut above the rest
2008-07-07 04:15:00
As Arseblogger points out this morning, footballers are routinely plumbing new depths with their mercenary like behaviour and the footballing media also plays its part in this rather unsavoury saga. It does leave a rather nasty taste in the mouth and I think it is turning a lot of people off the modern game. After all it is becoming harder and harder to make a connection with the modern

1 +1 = 3
2008-07-06 07:27:00
I am no Professor of Economics but something does not add up about the Screws of the World's Arsenal story today: "The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players. We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions — national and European —while having to free up - for 17 more years - an annual surplus of £24m to pay for our stadium. The club’s

Tennis takes centre stage as spin begins
2008-07-04 14:11:00
While it may be rather riveting for some to endlessly scour the media for fascinating transfer rumours, I'd prefer to put my feet up, watch a bit of Wimbledon and wait for something a bit more concrete to write about. If one gossips too much then one never knows what might happen, one might even start linking Arsenal with large German traffic cones like Per Mertesacker, for that reason I'd advise

A pea would be rather generous
2008-07-31 12:39:00
Ian Wright has never been the sharpest tool in the box, in fact if he was a tool (some would say he most definitely is these days) I'd suspect that he'd be so very soft and blunt that you could use him as a cushion. The Online Gooner has picked up on some rather stupid (at best), disrespectful and disgraceful (in reality) comments of his that have appeared in the Sun 'newspaper', personally my

More sparkle from the young gunners
2008-07-31 06:54:00
An encouraging amount of character was shown last night as a young Arsenal side overcame their first proper pre season test thus far, defeating Stuttgart 3-1, judging by the look on his face, poor old Jens didn't seem to enjoy letting three is the old onion bag. The Arsenal line up was interesting, with Djorou playing at centre back and the much maligned Eboue in the centre of midfield, while

Stuttgart Kick-a-Bout
2008-07-31 03:58:00
Arsenal beat Stuttgart 3-1 last night. Watching the game on Arsenal TV, it looked like both sides took it quite seriously, at least in the first half, with some heavy challenges from both sides. As always, its wise to take these pre-season games with an unhealthy large dose of salt, but they have revealed AW's plans in years gone by (e.g. Eboue at right back, Sagna being bloody good, Hleb

Cheers spuds
2008-07-30 04:49:00
If David Bentley's transfer to the spuds goes through today for £17 million quid then Arsenal can expect to cash in thanks to the sell on clause in the player's contract. It has been rumoured to be 50% of the fee, if this is true then we'll be getting a whopping £8.5 million! One can't help but feel that this is a hell of a lot of money for a player who has not even become an England regular and

Promise shown despite lapses
2008-07-28 13:29:00
A poor Burgenland side were dispatched 10-2 with some ease by a rather talented young Arsenal XI. The quality of the football was high, and despite the game running out of steam in the second half, there were several very big positives to take from the game. Bendtner bagged four to Vela's hat trick, Wilshere a brace and Walcott a single strike. Wilshere looks an absolutely class act, what

Nightmare defeat
2008-07-27 08:22:00
I woke up sweating rather profusely in the early hours of the morning today, and it wasn't solely down to the rather interesting and tasty combination of alcoholic drinks that had passed my lips the previous evening, I had a rather scary dream that we lost 1-0 to Liverpool. We dominated the early exchanges and RVP scored an absolute pearler on the half volley from the edge of the box, and for

Sweaty summer drags on
2008-07-24 14:14:00
It's probably best to try to take one's mind away from football in the close season, it's definitely good for one's sanity to have a bit of a break from being a stress filled supporter while nothing is happening, that's why I've been sunning myself away from my computer for the last few days. I did rather enjoy the voyage back to the summer of 1995, courtesy of Ted; I can't quite believe that so

The Summer of 1995
2008-07-24 03:40:00
I'm desperately bored of this summer's doom and gloom mongering. Everyone is either shite, or leaving, or shite and leaving. So I thought a little trip down memory lane might give some food for thought.Apparently, Arsenal spent more money that any other UK club in the summer of 1995, namely £7.5m on Bergkamp and £4.75 on David Platt.Glory days after the miserable last years of George Graham's

Barnet Musings
2008-07-21 03:35:00
I sat through the Barnet game on TV on Saturday. It was utterly pointless for the most part, but it was good to see some footy for a change rather than reading crap in the papers about players. First impression is the new strip. Its not terrible, but the absence of white on the sleeves is very noticeable from the back. It really does look like a Charlton strip. However, its probably the best

Farewell Gilberto
2008-07-17 19:23:00
If ever a player deserved a great send off then it was Gilberto Silva, having joined Panathanaikos it is good to see that the club has made a real effort to bid Gilberto well, there are several special features up on Arsenal.com including some video and photos of Gilbertos' best moments as an Arsenal player. It does not need repeating here, but Gilberto has been the model professional, he's

Open letter to Emmanuel Adebayor
2008-07-16 15:09:00
Hleb(that loyal servant) and Gilberto have now gone, Flamini had already departed, while Ramsey and Nasri have signed, and Vela has returned. I am sure I am not alone in thinking that we are a little short in terms of experience and cover, especially in the midfield, one or two slightly more experienced players in this area would surely be of benefit to our hopes of challenging on all fronts. I

Nasri sparkles and thee points in the bag
2008-08-16 11:02:00
I'd have gladly taken a one nil win had someone offered it to me on a plate before the game, getting three points under our belts was all important at this early stage. The icing on the cake was Tottenham's defeat to Boro at the Rivserside, top four my arse, some people never learn do they? Forty million on new players and null points, spending does not appear to guarantee glory. The goal came

All gooners together
2008-08-15 15:00:00
There has been far more chatter than action this close season. I can't say I'm particulartly happy or dissappointed at what has happened over the last few months. Exchanging the unproductive Hleb for the promising Nasri was a great piece of business. However losing Flamini, letting Gilberto go and having no real experienced back up in the centre of the park has not filled me with glee.

Letter to Ade and more
2008-08-14 10:53:00
A great result last night, even if the performance was not particularly convincing and some rather interesting post match comment. Given that we had seven first teamers out, I think some of our strength in depth was demonstrated, after all if Man U had seven out I wonder how strong their line up would be? Another one of our squad players, Justin Hoyte, looks set to join Boro for about 3.5

Has Wenger learned anything new?
2008-08-14 03:56:00
A result in itself tells you little about a game. We won 2-0 and by all accounts were not the better team. Liverpool drew 0-0 against Liege and by all accounts were both lucky and God Awful. But whose prospects look brighter after this first big test? My gut feeling is that Liverpool blogs are probably a happier place to be this morning. Our performance last night was professional, and was a

Bad luck and bad planning
2008-08-12 15:16:00
The squad is looking more than thread bare for tomorrow's trip to Holland; injuries to Toure, Diaby, Nasri, Senderos and Fabregas have left us rather exposed to failing to qualify for the Champions League next season. Add this list to Rosicky and Eduardo and we're not far from having a whole quality side out resting on the treatment table. The injuries at the back are unlucky, leaving us with a

Wenger's Big Gamble
2008-08-12 04:59:00
It looks increasingly likely that AW is going to back Denilson to partner Cesc in midfield against FC Twente on Wednesday. With Diaby out injured and Song at the Olympics, the only other choices for the central role would seem to be Eboue or Ramsey, judging by AW's pre-season selections. The consensus is that the Cesc/Denilson pairing is not likely to work as they are too similar in their

Kids impress against gravity compliant Sevilla
2008-08-10 05:06:00
A very creditable 1-1 draw against a strong Sevilla side gave us a 'trophy' of sorts yesterday, amazingly the starting eleven was not even as strong as our full reserve side. Injuries to Nasri and Diaby resulted in the squad appearing more thread bare than it actually is, having said that if we are to fight for silverware on several fronts we will have to bring in at least one more player. The

Gallas and Toure are not a partnership
2008-08-08 15:11:00
Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to launch into a sensationalist critique of how terrible the first half against Ajax has been, it would be silly to read to much into one game and there have been many positives from the first half despite the scoreline. Denilson has looked sharp again, Walcott is looking at home on the left of midfield while there are some encouraging signs from RVP and

A bit of nothing
2008-08-08 05:16:00
Its been a pretty dull week overall. The media hype on new signings has fizzled out, thankfully, and we have another pre-season mini-tournament to look forward to this weekend, starting with Ajax tonight and then Sevilla on Saturday. I can barely stand the excitement. Perhaps one issue that AW will have to consider this weekend is how many of his stars really do need to risk injury. This comes

Ade to get 80k per week
2008-08-06 07:26:00
Further to the reports coming via Arsenal TV last Friday, as reported here at the time, the papers are carrying reports (Telegragh again) that Adebayor's new four year deal with the club is worth an eye-watering £80,000 per week., which would put him with the very top earners at the club, who are rumoured to be Cesc and Billy Gallas. Adebayor has had a torrid summer, but he has now got the

Ruben de la Red Army?
2008-08-05 05:16:00
The Telegraph reports this morning that Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Ruben de la Red, whose progress we have apparently been tracking. There are no quotes or any firm information whatsoever in the article, so whats more likely is that his agent is seeing whether any of the Premier League clubs want to make an offer. Apart from having a good name, he is 23 years old, was in the
