Report: Kearny woman airlifted to St. Barnabas with serious burns 2008-03-25 17:46:00 Just got a phone call from loyal reader Manny Ventoso, who says there's a major incident brewing in Kearny on the Belleville Pike across the street from Pizzaland. He says he's heard there's a major fire, and a woman
has been taken out of a building with 80 percent of her body burned. He also says there had been a lockdown at Gunnel Oval, where a medical helicopter landed. Here are some photos Manny took at the Oval, where he says the victim was transported to, by ambulance, to be flown by helicopter to the Burn Unit at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston. We'll have more information as it becomes available, and many thanks to Manny Ventoso for his Citizen Journalist Report for The Hudson Line. There WERE dinosaurs on Noah's Ark 2008-03-25 15:35:00 During the church/state controversy I was recently embroiled in, many of my views were scrutinized. You may remember how I was mocked for believing there were dinosaurs on Noah’s Ark. Even my good friend, Kevin Canessa, printed a cartoon in an editorial poking fun at my view. And why not, given the fact that evolution has been propagated as fact, my view may sound a bit antiquated (if you are kind) or down right nutty (if you are less inclined to be polite). Nevertheless, I believe the Holy Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation to be God’s inspired word to mankind. Therefore, I believe that they ought to be interpreted literally.By “literally,” I mean they are to be interpreted according to the normal conventions of written language. That is, if something is written in the gen

New Name: 'The Hudson Line' 2008-03-24 23:08:00 Welcome back to the new blog, "The Hudson
Line." After many suggestions and thoughts, we've decided to go with "The Hudson Line," remembering our proximity to the Hudson River, our Hudson County birth and roots and a name that when pushed together, has "online" involved. For now, this is about the only major change you'll see. However, we'll be working to cover items of interest in all of Hudson County. Additionally, we'll be working to expand other issues nationally and globally.Of course, we'll never forget our roots — so you'll still find lots about Kearny, Harrison, Nutley, North Arlington and the other Jersey towns that have made this blog possible. But hopefully, with our future expansion, we'll better be able to bring you different slants on news from around the county, state, nati
Martin the Great is here, but sadly, no one cares 2008-03-24 20:24:00 There are times I just wish Martin
Brodeur would have left New Jersey to play hockey in his hometown Montreal. It’s not that I don’t like the guy — because I actually love him as a goalie. But the guy, who has played here since 1992, has made himself the greatest NHL goaltender of all time — and there’s barely a person who knows it or cares.I first got introduced to Brodeur in 1992, my senior year of high school. A friend of mine, Nick, and I decided to go to see the Devils because they were playing the Boston Bruins. Nick was a Bruins fan — and loved everything about Boston. So we went. And when the starting lineups were announced, Chris Terreri was NOT the starting goalie — and since I was a huge Terreri fan, I was sick. Instead, it was this rookie who had just been called Read more:Great

4,000th casualty 2008-03-23 23:27:00 Sadly and unnecessarily, Easter Sunday marked a horrible milestone in the War in Iraq: The 4,000th American military casualty since the beginning of the war five years ago. Now I don't often ask for prayer publicly, but I do hope those who pray will do so for the quick resolution of this senseless war — and I hope we can all pray the casualties from now on are minimal. One death in this war was too much — and now we've hit this awful number. May our leaders have the courage to find a way to safely and quickly end this bloodshed.

Rothman 'Listening Session' Monday at Kearny Town Hall at 7 2008-03-21 06:41:00 U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fairlawn, will host one of his listening sessions Monday
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Kearny Town Hall, 402 Kearny Ave., in the Council Chamber. Rothman makes it a point to visit each town he represents once every two years to listen to constituent concerns. Normally, Rothman begins the sessions with comments, and then opens up the floor to questions from residents. However, the questions are normally written on paper, and then read by the congressman. He then calls on the questioner, and discusses his answers with the person who wrote the question personally. Registration for the event is not required. Read more:Listening

Today is Good Friday 2008-03-20 23:53:00 Today is Good Friday
.In many Christian churches, especially the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, the day is perhaps the most somber of all days in the church year, as it marks the remembrance of Jesus Christ's Passion and Death on the Cross. Churches are especially "cold," in reality and in appearance, as it is the only day throughout the year the Blessed Sacrament is not kept in the tabernacle. Most churches are stripped of flowers and decorations, and the altar is kept bare. Use of music is discouraged, though not completely, at Good Friday Services. In most services (not a Mass), the Passion is read in multiple parts by multiple participants, the church prays intercessory prayers for the local, national and world needs — and for the needs of the church itself. Then, at the end, th Read more:Today
Help us come up with a new name for this blog 2008-03-20 21:57:00 There are a lot of great blogs out there, and I'd like to think this is one of them. But, the name "The Canessa Corner Blog" has seen better days. That's why it's time to rename and relaunch this site. Here's an example. The #1 blog-news site in America is Baristanet, out of Montclair. It's run by Debbie Galante, a former columnist for The New York Times. Part of the reason the blog is as successful as it is is because of its name, which borrows off of the term "Barista," a person who makes coffee drinks at Starbucks and other coffee shops. So, in an effort to spruce things up, we're looking forward to renaming this news blog, and working to expand it from one that weekly sees up to 5,000 unique visitors to one that shatters records. With the renaming, we also pledge to bring you more news,

Today is Holy Thursday 2008-03-20 14:35:00 Today is Holy Thursday
, a day when many Christians pause to remember Jesus' Last Supper. In many churches, especially the Catholic and Episcopal churches, the priest, as part of the Mass of Holy Thursday, washes the feet of some gathered, recalling when Jesus did the same for his 12. As Holy Week progresses, our thoughts and prayers are with all those who celebrate. (This photo was taken last year of Pope Benedict XVI washing the feet of someone at the Vatican during Holy Thursday Mass). Read more:Today
Reasonably speaking, Jesus rose from the dead 2008-03-20 14:30:00 Kierkegaard suggested that faith was a blind leap into the darkness. Jesus
Christ, however, never expected his followers to believe blindly. He told his listeners that if they didn’t believe his words, to at least believe the evidence of the miracles themselves (Jn. 14:11).The apologetics of Jesus involved performing miracles. The greatest of these miracles was his resurrection from the dead. There are two amazing aspects to this miracle.First, he predicted it in advance (Matt. 16:21; Mk. 10:33-34; Lk. 9:22). Second, it actually happened (Acts 2:23-24; 13:13-15). Taken by itself, the resurrection is already a singularity. However, given the fact Jesus himself predicted it in detail — one week prior — makes it the greatest miracle of the Bible. The very God of the universe, who create
