Bush to visit Freehold Friday
2008-03-25 22:14:00
President Bush will be in Freehold sometime Friday , so if you're planning to take the Turnpike or Parkway anytime Friday, you'll definitely want to brace yourself. While the precise time of his visit is not known, it's certain that when Air Force One arrives at Newark Airport, the Turnpike will be shut down, and then, presumably, if he travels to Freehold via the Parkway, that road will be shut down, too, as his entourage moves south.I was caught in a shut-down the last time he visited the state, and although it's a serious inconvenience, I can tell you officials try their hardest to keep the road closures to a minimum. When I find out for sure what time he'll be here, I'll let you know. I'd hate for anyone who reads the blog to be caught in a parking lot on either of these roads — espec

Jersey Journal illustrates why it's the state's 'best' newspaper ... at looking foolish
2008-03-29 07:29:00
For any of us who grew up in Hudson County, present company included, the Jersey Journal was somewhat of a rite of passage each day. We couldn't go without reading it. Now, years and years later, what was once a reputable newspaper that covered Hudson County thoroughly is now a joke of a rag not even worthy of lining a bird cage.Whether it's Augie Torres' constant hypocritical editorials, his unwillingness to hear multiple sides of a story, his refusal to print any letters to the editor that slam him and the like, or whether it's putting the photo of a deceased baby on its cover a few years back, the Hudson County newspaper of record is now nothing short of a disgraceful bunch of crap put together, masked as "news," usually with the idea of unfairly targeting people for a laugh.Such was no

Incredible story of mixup in car accident
2008-03-28 13:35:00
Greetings everyone. I am terribly sorry that I haven't blogged today. Unfortunately, I woke up this morning with some kind of virus and I had cold sweats and more, and I've been in bed most of the day. I was sitting around watching MSNBC, and they were going over their top video hits for the week. This story is truly incredible, and I had to share it with you. I hope you'll take some time to watch it.In the meantime, if anything major breaks, I'll be back; but in the meantime, I think I'll be spending time resting so that I can get better. I hate feeling like this. Enjoy the video.

'Daddy's' love letter
2008-04-01 21:12:00
A couple of months ago, Feb. 19 to be precise, I had a very precious moment with my son, Jonathan. Jonathan is 10, and is one of four siblings. His brother, David, is 12, and his sisters Rebekah and Hannah are 6 and 3. Poor Jonathan is stuck in the middle. David is the oldest and experiences everything first. Rebekah was the first girl and Hannah is the baby who gets everyone’s attention. As a result, Jonathan is often left feeling as if he is not as special as the others.Back in February, I had to punish Jonathan for being disrespectful to his mother. For one week, he was not to go out to play, and there was to be no TV or video games at home. He was to come straight home from school and do his homework. His only entertainment was reading and Jonathon doesn’t like to read. D

Welcome to Mets Baseball, 2008, Mets fans.Pedro Martinez had to leave tonight's game with what club officials are calling a "strained hamstring."It's not immediately clear how serious the strain is, nor how long, if at all, it will sideline Martinez. Still, not good news two games into the season no matter how you look at it.If we learn more about the injury, we'll share it with you here right away. Then again, you'll probably hear all about it tonight on the 11 p.m. news, so you might know before I do...

MSNBC has brain fart, airs odd video
2008-04-01 20:04:00
You almost have to wonder if someone at MSNBC actually wanted this video — which appears to be spoofs of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson — to get on the air. Mika's reaction is rather tame. I probably would have lost it if I had been anchoring when this unexpected video came on.

Cozine may sue to block Bloomberg's Congestion-Pricing Plan
2008-04-01 19:01:00
New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine, D-Hoboken, says he may sue to halt New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg 's plan to charge to drive in certain parts of Manhattan, The New York Post reports on its Web site tonight. Click here for the report.Bloomberg's plan, though not official, has recently gained serious support, including Gov. David Paterson, of New York.Of course, the irony of all of this is that Corzine is himself in the midst of attempting to implement an absurd toll plan of his own to close the state's budget gap. I wonder — does he realize his plan would hurt New Yorkers just as unfairly as Bloomie's plan would hurt Garden Staters? At any rate, despite the obvious hypocrisy, I am glad to hear Corz is considering trying to stop all this.

Santana K's 8 in 7 innings as Mets win on Opening Day
2008-03-31 20:48:00
Johan Santana was brilliant in his first game as a Met, pitching seven innings while striking out eight, in a Mets 7-2 win over the Florida Marlins on Opening Day. Mets fans like me, of course, had dreams of the Mets' first-ever perfect no-hitter, as Santana retired the first nine batters he faced. Of course, it didn't happen — and it may never happen — but the Mets were definitely sharp in their first game of the season. Click here for a full recap from ESPN.

Opening day leads to thoughts of new parks and ignorance of some coaches
2008-03-31 13:29:00
Hello readers! So sorry about the delay for a new post! I have had some recent computer problems, but finally got a half-decent laptop, so I’m back in business. Thank you for being patient, if there are any of you out there!Last night marked the Opening Night of the 2008 Major League Baseball season and needless to say, it jump started in good fashion. The Washington Nationals’ new ballpark was christened with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth for a Nats win. Most clubs open up their seasons today or tomorrow, including our beloved Mets, down in Florida against the Marlins. I am sure we all look forward to a great and exciting season ahead of us. Don’t forget to keep up with my pre-season predictions! So there are a few things I would like to touch on in this post. Recalling the greatest Ralph Kinerisms on this baseball Opening Day
2008-03-30 23:18:00
As we usher in a new baseball season, I thought I'd start off my regular Mets thoughts with a series of quotes from the incomparable Ralph Kiner, the Mets' longtime broadcaster. Ralph is known well for his butchering of just about, well, anything he ever said. These are some of his best lines ever, as compiled by the Baseball Almanac. Here's to another great season of Mets baseball — and, oh, good luck to the Yankees, too."All of his saves have come in relief appearances" Source: Sports Illustrated (July 5, 1989)"All of the Mets road wins against the Dodgers this year occurred at Dodger Stadium.""Cadillacs are down at the end of the bat." Source: Book of Sports Quotes (Bert Sugar)"Darryl Strawberry has been voted to the Hall of Fame five years in a row.""Hello, everybody. Welcome to Kiner

A tribute to Andy Hoyt, a friend, a colleague and mentor
2008-04-03 22:29:00
I can easily remember the first time I met Andy Hoyt. It was the summer of 2003, and I walked into Oratory Prep, for the first time after being hired, to begin teaching two summer courses. I met Jack Horan, then the school’s principal, at the front door, and he introduced me to a thin, yet tall man.“Kevin, meet Andy Hoyt,” Horan said. “Kevin is joining the faculty to teach religion, and he’ll be teaching keyboarding and study skills for the summer session.”“Nice to meet you,” Andy said with a handshake.I had met him.And yet, for the six subsequent weeks, I never spoke another word to Andy. In fact, it wasn’t until September that we first chatted. Somehow, we both found out that we had a mutual affection for the New York Mets. And, as the 2003 season winded down, we both s
