New Course: Relational Perspectives on CMC
2008-04-03 12:48:00
Sometime last semester, when I had obviously lost my better senses, I agreed to create a new course for Fall 2008. Well, the course is now on the books, so I thought I might post the description here:INLS 490-151, Fall 2008Computer Mediated CommunicationThe web is a place of communication, interaction and relational management. From Ray Tomlinson's first email in 1971, to the iChats, Wall posts and Twitters of today, we have consistently turned to the network to find one other for communication and collaboration. This course explores computer mediated communication (CMC) from a relational perspective; that is, how do we use network communication tools to start, build or sustain interpersonal relationships. Utilizing interdisciplinary perspectives including, but not limited to, information

The Social Filter
2008-04-03 12:45:00
Over on techPresident, I've written a post about the social filter, in response to an article in the NYT that caught my attention. My post is about how we've created a new media in the spaces between us in social media. It was fun to think about and write - check it out here.

Fixing Information Overload in Twitter
2008-04-03 12:44:00
As someone who has started or run a few web projects, I'm used to the complaining blogger. And because of that, I try to stay away from being the complaining blogger. But I think that Twitter is about to drive me crazy with information overload, and I think I know how to solve the problem. So here's a go.Increasingly, Twitter has begin to feel like a collection of RSS feeds. My Twitter home screen is my personal newsreader. Unfortunately, it is completely dysfunctional. Some people I follow for personal reasons, some people I follow for work. Some people post often, some people once a week. I want to read every single message written by some people, and others can float by. Sort of like any other inbox, I guess. If you've used Twitter, however, you know that all your messages go into the sa

Recent SNS Studies
2008-04-03 12:43:00
In the past few weeks, I've come across a number of SNS-related studies. Thought I'd like to them here in case you're interested. I haven't had time to give them comprehensive reads, but I'm particularly interested in checking out the Bryon study.Blake, R. (April 2, 2008). Social Networking. Ofcom (UK). Retrieved April 2, 2008 from Bryon, T. (March 27, 2008). Safer Children in a Digital World: the report of the Byron Review. Department for Children, Schools and Families (UK). Media Unit Strctures: Learning Outside the Box
2008-04-03 12:42:00
I've recently started listening to podcasts of the PRI program To The Best Of Our Knowledge. Unfortunately our affiliate doesn't get the program, so the podcast is one of my favorite discoveries in recent memory. The March 9 edition of the show, Learning Outside the Box, was particularly compelling. Featuring a discussion with Jonathan Mooney, the "learning disabled" author of The Short Bus, the show forces you to confront notions of "normalcy" in societal and educational contexts. Very thought provoking, and some of the best radio I've heard in a while. Listen to the stream here.

Spring Semester is Here
2008-04-03 12:40:00
This semester, I'll again be teaching my class on Online Social Networks. If you're interested in checking out the (revised) syllabus, you can download a copy here (pdf). This semester, I'm looking forward to travel to SF twice. At the end of this month, I'll be attending Social Graph Foo Camp, and in March I'll be visiting with David Silver to talk social networks, identity and new literacies. I'm really excited about both of these trips. I'll also be in Los Angeles to attend the iConference, which looks like a fun and exceptionally busy time. More information about all these events as they get closer to the date.

Myspace's data disaster
2008-04-03 12:39:00
Earlier this week, a student in my class pointed us to this story, describing a security vulnerability in Myspace that allowed private pictures to be viewed by anyone. It's not the first time Myspace has been exploited in this manner, but it was certainly creepy. A followup story reveals the staggering impact of the vulnerability. Wired's Kevin Poulsen writes:A 17-gigabyte file purporting to contain more than half a million images lifted from private MySpace profiles has shown up on BitTorrent, potentially making it the biggest privacy breach yet on the top social networking site....By then, DMaul, a denizen of the online forum TribalWar.com who declined to reveal his name, used an automated script to run nearly 44,000 MySpace user profiles through one of the ad-supported sites, MySpacePri
