That ’60s & ’70s Show: New Raconteurs
2008-03-24 20:00:54
OK, Raconteurs . You want immediacy? Well here it is. We’re not letting it permeate. We’re not letting it marinate. Nothing that ends in “eate” or “inate.” We’re just going to let it rip. You wanted it this way. This is your life, straight from Detour's hip.

Metal Health: New Bad Dudes Video
2008-03-24 17:00:56
Vintage Van Hagar? Light-speed leads courtesy of Black Sabbath's Tommy Iommi? Random blonde drummers and spandex-clad shredders straight out of Headbangers Ball? No, it’s not what Riki Rachtman’s dreams are made of. It’s the new video by LA prog-punks Bad Dudes. Amateurishly syncing classic rock

Heartbeat-down: Devastations, Yes, U
2008-03-24 16:00:15
For a few years now Melbourne, Australia's Devastations have been methodically stalking the larger musical world from just off the radar, impressing folks in the wee hours when it's only the night owls who are left to hear their dangerously romantic jams.

Fake Plastic Tour: Liars Hit the Road with Radiohead
2008-03-24 15:00:00
Radiohead are liars. Or at least that’s what we thought, when it was reveled that In Rainbows could be downloaded for $-.3098. Boy, were we wrong (though we downloaded ours for $-.3097)! What may have gone unnoticed, however, is that Radiohead actually like liars. Liars the band, that is. Our

Meet & Greet: Badman Recording Co.
2008-03-24 14:00:48
Back in 1997, I had the idea of helping to promote and distribute a band that I recorded called The Cherries. I had worked for Universal Distribution for a number of years doing marketing and sales for Geffen, Interscope and MCA artists, and thought I could handle it. Things got exciting in 1999 when we released a comp of like-minded artists (Red House Painters, Low, Hayden, Misc and Idaho) on a charitable CD.

X Marks the Spot: Kylie Minogue Premieres New Album
2008-03-24 13:00:54
Not even snobby indie rockers can deny a good hook. Case in point: Kylie Minogue ’s dance-floor monster “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” And hey, if you don’t believe us, just ask the Flaming Lips,

Chance Across the Sand: Rio Bravo
2008-03-24 12:00:01
A seminal Western, Rio Bravo is a terrific treatise on male friendship, loyalty, and pride. John Wayne stars as Sheriff John T. Chance, a former gunfighter who’s settled down in what’s normally a peaceful Texas town.

Boost Mobile: Simian Mobile Disco Get Dropped, Tour
2008-03-24 11:00:35
Brit-beatnuts Simian Mobile Disco may have wowed the crowds at SXSW, but that hasn't stopped that stupid jerk Interscope Records from dropping ‘em from their roster. Luckily for James Ford and James Shaw -- the men behind the disco -- they’re too busy creating widgets of questionable necessity

The ist of It: School of Language, “Rockist,”
2008-03-24 10:00:02

Mixed Bizness: Love is All, Mixed Up
2008-03-24 08:00:34
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, remix albums are here to stay. Sadly, there’s nothing really Earth shattering about dressing an otherwise-basic rock song up like a robot and making it do the motorik. So, on paper, it seems like a crime to apply this practice to a band as shambolic and live sounding as Swedish

Up or Down?: Spiral Trailer
2008-03-21 17:00:46
"Inside the darkest corners of the mind," warn the titles, "it's hard to tell the difference between..." the upcoming Spiral and numerous other films about frustrated loners who ice unsuspecting visitors to their psychosis.

Footloose: Final Scene from The Crippled Masters
2008-03-21 15:30:07
They say you should never hit a guy with glasses. After watching the intense, climactic fight scene from Crippled Masters , go ahead and add, “never fuck with a handicapped dude” to the list of shouldn’t dos. More brutal than the goateed bruisers from Murderball, this stubby duo work over their full-limbed opponent with the fury of a thousand pint-sized B

Meet & Greet: The Delta Spirit
2008-03-21 15:24:03
"All you soul searchin' people come on..." The Delta Spirit can definitely get their dander up for the dust, the country, the indie, and the fervor, all of which are part of Ode to Sunshine, their latest full-length.

No Wizards Here: Blood on the Wall, Liferz
2008-03-21 14:00:24
If you believe blogs, the future of music will be controlled by wizards with computers. They'll create a vast artificial network of robotic beats and synthesized blips that will dazzle the mind, and transform us all into dance-floor zombies.

New Atmosphere Video: “Shoulda Known”
2008-03-21 13:00:34
Atmosphere's upcoming record is entitled When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. This is some kind of axiom for youth: part Norman Rockwell americana, "Please Don't Eat the Daises" stizz, part Krylon Metallic.

Frontier Justice Addendum: Real Life After Justice
2008-03-21 12:00:30
Approximately three minutes after I filed my cranky Frontier Justice column about The Justice Effect, afterparties, and Internet humans hating anything that's alive, I received an email that told me about -- ready? -- an afterparty featuring Justice spinning their squelchy hits, post their show at the Riviera here in Chicago. OMG!

My Dad Lives in a Downtown Hotel
2008-03-21 10:00:52
I can think of a million worse places your dad could live. Off the top of my head - a dumpster, Afghanistan, a loft in a DIY music space, or even Sarnia. Your dad’s got room service, clean sheets and a remote control. Fuck off, Joey. – Harry Caul addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fdetour-mag.com%2Fassets%2F2008%2F03%2F21%2Fmy-dad-lives-in-a-downtown-hotel%2F'; [...]

Stab Scrummage With a Shiv
2008-03-21 09:00:50
Chicago's Mass Shivers don't overdo the weirdness on their debut full-length; in fact, though their songs whine with whale call guitar tones and often get lost in cul de sacs of percussion, it's the trio's love of repetitive vocal phrasing that keeps everything on course, righting the ship whenever their post-post-post-everything tendencies grow a little too strong.

Getcha Verve On
2008-03-21 08:00:12
Ten years ago, you couldn’t go anywhere (the mall, a Nike commercial, your mom’s car) without hearing the soothing strings and plodding beat of the Verve ’s “Bittersweet Symphony.” Needless to say, shit was popular, son. The kicker was that the Verve made

Drowning Patrol: Stop-Loss Trailer
2008-03-26 17:00:46
Drowning Pool's "Bodies" has aged since its 2001 debut into the ultimate roaring vestige of post-grunge/rap-rock America. Though Saliva's 2007 shouter "Ladies and Gentlemen" is the most recent rehash of the formula, and the POD singles "Alive"

Grow It, Show It: Bodies of Water, Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink
2008-03-26 16:00:40
Originally released in 2007 on the band’s own Thousand Tongues imprint, it’s no wonder Secretly Canadian snatched up this ambitious little gem. Fitting right into the label’s aesthetic, Bodies of Water’s Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink is a manic folk

Meet & Greet: Jade Tree Records
2008-03-26 14:00:35
The name was Tim’s idea and he can never remember where and how it came to him. When he mentioned it to me, I liked it because it did not conjure up anything at all in my mind. To this day, our bank thinks we are a lawn care company.

Music & Lyrics: Kaki King, Dreaming of Revenge
2008-03-26 10:50:01
In the last few years Kaki King has risen from the comforting underground of the guitar virtuoso set -- her records used to exclusively feature instrumentals based around her incredible guitar-playing -- to contributing to the recent, acclaimed soundtrack for Into the Wild and collaborating with both Tegan and Sara and the Foo Fighters.

Johnny Mnemonic Is Actually Awesome
2008-03-26 08:28:32
In what other film will you see a pioneer of punk, the original gangsta, an avant-garde Japanese director, a Finnish scholar, and a teen heartthrob all act side by side with a dolphin? None other than Johnny Mnemonic. Directed by New York artist Robert Longo, the film would mark his first and last foray into feature length cinema to date.

Weezular: Nada Surf, “Popular”
2008-03-25 16:00:53
There are three important rules for breaking up, and one of them is looking as much like Rivers Cuomo as possible. The second is to look a lot like Weezer when you're rocking out your hit single on the 50-yard line of a local high school.
