Who Ordered The PineCone Research iPhone Pricing Survey? 2007-02-20 05:31:05 There’s a new twist to the recent story we’ve run about PineCone Research
survey. For those with short memory, it was about an AT&T/Cingular ad that showed the Apple iPhone
’s pricing at $299/399 for 4/8GB models respectively.
We’re absolutely sure that this survey indeed took place. However Mr Jeff Cail, Senior VP at PineCone Research, who asked us to remove the advertisement scan from our servers, refused to give any comments.
Gizmodo contacted a Cingular representative about this survey, whose answer was simply “It’s a fake.” If we’ll discard the thought that the representative in question was simply uninformed about the survey, we’re facing a very serious question: who was behind this survey if it wasn’t Cingular, and what was its purpose?
Our list of suspects includes Apple itself, possibly evaluating market reaction to eventual price drop. But as a more sinister thought, it could’ve been one of Cingular’ Read more:Pricing
HTC Love (P3350) Against Apple iPhone Comparison 2007-02-20 03:33:18 HTC P3350 (also known as HTC Love, and previously codenamed as HTC Artemis) is the latest offering from Taiwan-based mobile phone manufacturer HTC (High Tech Computer Corp). This touchscreen smartphone could be considered a rival to AppleiPhone
because it has some quite similar features.
It weighs at 127 grams, compared to iPhone’s 135 grams, and its dimensions are 2.3 x 4.3 x 0.7 inches (58 x 108 x 16.8 millimeters), against iPhone’s 2.4 x 4.5 x 0.46 inches (115 x 61 x 115 x 11.6 millimeters). Clearly, the difference is not all that great.
HTC P3350 (Love)
HTC Love is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, and is essentially a quadband GSM cell phone, although it also supports UMTS. It supports CSD, GPRS, and EDGE data transfer standards, so just like the iPhone it’s a 2G phone. It can be controlled with its touchscreen, but it also has a trackball, which clearly gives more control options than Apple iPhone’s touchscreen alone. And while it comes with only 256 MB stor Read more:Against Apple
Ugandan Parliamentarians Clash Over iPhone 2007-02-19 22:44:07 In Uganda, a small impoverished African nation, esteemed parliamentarians almost came to fists one against another, right on the parliament’s floor. While there are many issues that face this country, such as rapid spread of AIDS and joblessness, the hot button topic today was the Apple iPhone
.
A group of parliamentarians led by Hon. MP Minister John Nasasira, claimed that many members of the parliament can’t be reached at important times due to lack of communications. He, and those supporting him, demanded that the government provides each parliament member with an Apple iPhone, once it’s available later this year.
Many MP’s supported this motion, claiming that they’re unavailable for votes and other important parliamentary affairs due to lack of mobile phones. According to them they’re "important members of society and therefore deserved a good looking and working mobile device like the iPhone from America"
However their opponents were not co Read more:Clash
Quantum Research Suspects Apple iPhone Uses Their Technology 2007-02-19 20:48:31 Southampton, UK based touch sensor engineering firm Quantum Research
has a message to Apple
: "We will be looking very carefully at the iPhone
" Apple is already locked in one patent infringement lawsuit with Quantum Research, and the firm is ready to bring on another one.
According to Duncan Bryan, licensing director at Quantum Research: "The description of the iPhone suggests it uses a rear-surface touch screen, and has proximity sensing which can tell if it is held to the ear. That's a Quantum Research capability"
If Apple is indeed using this technology with the iPhone, already licensed to Motorola, they would be infringing Qantum Research’s patent. Apple is already using charge transfer technology in some of the iPod models, which caused Quantum Research to start the previous, ongoing lawsuit.

Teclast T59: Just Another iPhonoid? 2007-02-19 06:29:19 iPhonoid n. any iPhonic device deficient in one or more key aspects (as described in Apple iPhone Jargon section of Maddy’s Dictionary).
The Teclast T59 could certainly be an iPhonoid - Windows CE powered, Taiwanese made, it’s ready to join the ranks of “me-too” Apple iPhone wannabes, sporting a suspiciously similar design to the iPhone and having been introduced roughly a month since Apple’s iPhone announcement.
But not everything is that simple — according to the information provided on Teclast’s official site, the device will come with 3.5inch VGA touchscreen capable of 30FPS, GPS, FM radio, and Wi-Fi. Even more interestingly, the maximum size storage model of Teclast T59 comes with a whopping 16GB of memory!
You can see an early promotional ad below, and stay tuned for more details as they become available.

“killers”. Meizu MiniOne Chinese iPhone clone’s laurels don’t let other Asian mobile phone manufacturers sleep easy at night. MiTAC is a Taiwanese electronics company that among other things has a mobile communications division. Apparently the folks over at MiTAC noticed all the media attention that Meizu’s MiniOne has received, so they’ve decided to come up with their own Windows Mobile 5.0 powered iPhone clone. Thus MiTAC Mio A501 was born.
Essentially, the Mio A501 is a miniature quadband GSM touchscreen mobile device that supports CSD, GPRS, and EDGE networks. Its dimensions are 2.3 x 3.8 x 0.8 inches versus Apple iPhone’s 2.4 x 4.5 x 0.46 inches (115 x 61 x 11.6mm for iPhone vs 95.7 x 59.6 x 20.7mm for Mio A501). Not quite as slim, but it’s almost there. Palm's CEO: Apple Developed "Nothing At All" 2007-02-18 17:59:21 Palm’s president and CEO Ed Colligan gave a new interview to Swiss newspaper Sonntagszeitung that was published today. In it, he had the following to say about the Apple
iPhone (rough translation from German):
“In my opinion it looks like a highly developed media player, which by a coincidence includes a mobile phone. It could be interesting for people that need to have both music and films on one iPod, as well as the occasional phone call.” But for businessmen and other types of users the touchscreen without a keyboard will be a challenge, said Mr Colligan.
According to him, besides computers and iPods Apple developed “nothing at all“. There’s a giant difference between giving speeches and actual development, went on to say Mr Colligan.
“However it will not be simple to create a good smartphone that would function on all different networks used in different parts of the world. Nokia, Motorola and Samsung worked on it for 25 years - and until t Read more:Nothing
iPhone Exclusive to Apple/Cingular Stores, Websites 2007-02-21 19:26:29 After a meeting with Apple
’s executives, Prudential Equity Group says that Apple expects the iPhone
to be sold mostly through its online and retail stores, as well as through its partner, Cingular
.
Attending this meeting, were Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, Apple Sr. VP of Retail Ron Johnson, and Apple Sr. Director of Mac Product Marketing Tom Bogart.
According to Mr Tortora, “Apple said that the iPhone will be sold exclusively through its own stores, its website, and Cingular stores. Management expects the majority of the iPhone sales to occur in Apple stores, given that consumers will likely look to Apple to demonstrate the device's features.”
According to Apple, once the iPhone is released, it expects similar per-store sales as leading USA electronics retailer Best Buy. Furthermore, Apple “doesn't expect to broadly proliferate into any new categories for a while,” and will focus on Macintosh, iPod, AppleTV, and iPhone Read more:Exclusive

20 Apple iPhone Mysteries 2007-02-21 17:10:13 Introduction
It’s been almost a month and a half since Steve Jobs gave his now famous iPhone
presentation at Macworld 2007. Since then answers to a lot of questions about the Apple
iPhone were found, but even more questions still remain. This article is based on publicly available information, as well as information reported by other publications. It discusses the most important things that we don’t know about the Apple iPhone
.
Apple iPhone
Global iPhone Issues
- The #1 question that bothers us — will it still be known as the iPhone? Apple is currently in the middle of a legal dispute with Cisco in USA and UK regarding the iPhone trademark, and with Comwave in Canada. If it loses those, it might need to rename the iPhone to something else. iMobile, anyone?
- Our #2 is a very interesting question - Cisco demands for “interoperability” between the two iPhones. Cisco’s iPhone is a VOIP Skype phone. Does that mean that if Cisco’s demands are met, Read more:Mysteries
Apple To Acquire Palm? 2007-02-21 14:16:32 Some rumors were circulating recently about an imminent sale of Palm. Commented Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney: “I think it would be a good thing if they were purchased. They’re doing well now, but they need more capital to do the things they need to do.” “The rumor that [Palm] is in play came from investors,” added Mr Dulaney.
According to him “Today, the big guys can do new [phone] models every six months, Palm just can’t do that. The Treo has been out there far too long. Its electronics have been upgraded, but it’s just too thick.”
As possible candidates that could purchase Palm, Mr Dulaney named HP, Dell and Apple
. Speaking about Apple, he said "What they'd get from Palm is carrier knowledge. But they'd have to pick up a whole OS" Mr Dulaney meant to say that Palm’s most recent devices, the Treo line, all run on Windows Mobile operating system, while Apple intends to use OSX in Apple iPhone.

Cisco vs. Apple: Second Deadline Expires Today 2007-02-21 10:50:21 Today, on February 21st 2007, expires the extended deadline that was given by Cisco
to Apple
Inc. to respond to its iPhone trademark lawsuit. Cisco is suing Apple Inc. on the grounds that it owns the iPhone trademark in USA, UK, and a number of other countries, as it acquired the iPhone trademark from Infogear, along with its other assets, in March 2000.
The two companies are purportedly attempting to come to an out-of-court settlement - while Cisco repeatedly stated that one of the preconditions for a settlement is "interoperability" between the Linksys-Cisco iPhone and the Apple iPhone, whatever that might mean.
This was the second deadline extension that Cisco granted to Apple Inc., however as of now, with less than 24 hours left to the deadline, the parties have apparently not reached an agreement yet.
If the talks stall, both parties involved will be looking at a rather lengthy, costly, and unpredictable legal fight. You can read more about the Apple/Cisco legal dispute in o Read more:Second

should be worried about. But let’s not jump ahead of ourselves.

) on its 3.6inch (3.5inch for iPhone) VGA display. It is powered by an Nvidia GoForce 5500 GPU, and a 520MHz Xscale CPU (very close to iPhone’s ARM11 CPU). It even has SRS Mobile HD surround sound .

iPhone Rumor: Cingular Exclusivity To Last Two Weeks 2007-02-22 23:25:08 Cult of Mac posted a rumor that claims that Cingular
’s iPhone
exclusivity period will last for only two weeks. The rumor goes a little something like “I was talking to a T-Mobile employee yesterday and he claimed that they will have the iPhone 2 weeks after the release. Cingular's exclusive apparently lasts only 2 Weeks
!!“.
The salt of this story, is that the information in question comes from a T-Mobile employee trying to sign up a customer. The original title of this story was “T-Mobile is clearly engaged in dishonest business practices”, but we’ve decided to tone it down a bit..

Cisco Got Shafted By Apple in iPhone Dispute 2007-02-22 21:17:05 Yesterday Cisco
and Apple
announced that they settled the iPhone
dispute out of court, with both companies allowing each other to keep using the trademark on their products. According to at least two analysts, Apple de-facto won the iPhone name dispute.
Endpoint Technologies Associates analyst Roger Kay believes that it was a “face-saving” agreement for Cisco. “It looks like Cisco got shafted. Maybe there’s something in the (undisclosed) terms, but I don’t see how they’re getting the good end of the deal,” he said.
According to another analyst Rob Enderle, “It looks like Cisco caved.” As for promised interoperability talks, it “looks like the typical promise that (Apple CEO) Steve Jobs has no intention of keeping,” he says.

Sprint Ready To Compete With Cingular's iPhone 2007-02-24 01:48:11 While Apple’s iPhone
is being introduced as a Cingular
/AT&T exclusive, Sprint
’s senior vice president of product management and development, Oliver Valente, said at the Pacific Crest Digital Media and Entertainment Forum in New York City: “We welcome the competition, we look forward to competing with Apple in the music space.”
He went on to say: “There are some barriers they will have to overcome. It won’t be as easy as some believe to go from an industry where you are making a lot of money on hardware and not so much money on services into an industry where it is quite the reverse.”
Sprint is America’s third largest mobile carrier, behind only Cingular/AT&T and Verizon. While the iPhone exclusivity period for Cingular appears to be two years, Sprint is looking to cash in on its budget priced mobile phones line, of a dozen or more cell phones, priced less than $100.

iPhone Rumor: 3G iPhone in January 2008 2007-02-24 01:03:37 Apple Insider reports that a Swedish firm received assurances from a local mobile carrier that Apple’s iPhone
will have 3G already in January
2008. While they can’t elaborate on that any further due to confidentiality of their source, they believe that iPhone 2.0 will offer support for HSDPA wireless data transfer standard early next year.
These would be good news for Apple, as currently one of the major concerns about the device in Europe and Asia is the lack of 3G support with the iPhone. However it does not make too much sense to release iPhone v2.0 only several months after iPhone v1.0 appears in Europe (currently the estimated release date in Europe is October 2007).

$500 Too Much for iPhone: Survey 2007-02-23 19:15:29 According to a new survey conducted by Compete Inc. among 379 American residents most of which are aware of the iPhone
and are looking to buy an iPod, 26% of the respondents said they’re likely to buy the iPhone. However only 1% of them said that they’re willing to pay $500 for it.
42% of those surveyed said they’re likely to buy the iPhone if it’d cost between $200 to $299. At the same time Cingular now apparently has a big lead on its closest competitors, such as Verizon and Sprint, because 60% of respondents who are likely to buy the iPhone said they would switch from their current mobile service provider to Cingular, who is the exclusive USA distributor for the Apple iPhone.

Analyst: Apple Paid Cisco Between $25-50 Million For iPhone Name 2007-02-25 01:11:54 Since Apple
and Cisco
signed a peace agreement allowing each company to keep using the iPhone
name, industry analysts’ reactions keep coming.
Piper Jaffray & Co senior research analyst Gene Munster, believes that talks of cooperation and interoperability between Apple’s and Cisco’s products is just a smoke screen. According to him, it was "noble language", while “Apple wanted that to be the impression because they get a lot of pressure for being closed.” Furthermore, according to his estimations Apple paid Cisco between $25 million and $50 million for the iPhone trademark.
But that’s not all that Cisco got out of the deal, says Kurt Scherf, VP and principal analyst with Parks Associates. “This is more a strategic move by Cisco to continue to strengthen its core business — and it was good for them to have the moxie or the wherewithal to have the iPhone name to use as a negotiating tool,” said he.
