I'm one of them now...
2009-09-14 07:55:00
In high school I was always that girl that came in last during running practice. When we ran through the parc I used every bush as an opportunity to walk instead of running. I despised running: it made me hot, it made me sweat and it made my head look like a very ripe tomato. It there'd been a t-shirt saying: 'Running sucks' I would have been proud to wear it. Runners were strange and mysterious people who didn't use a red light to take a break but continued to run in place. I could only shake my head in wonderment at such stupidity. But after the birth of my son Ot, a friend who came to see me told me about her daily runs. She described running through parks, passing ducks in ponds on the way, feeling the sun on her face and thinking to herself: 'Isn't life great'. 'And,' she told me 'runn

Motivation
2008-03-23 11:02:00
Spurred on by the memory of a big bag of chips, one chocolate bar, five lollypops and hubby's plans to take a bath, I ran out the door this morning. In mismatched running attire, with only one sock because I couldn't find the other one. Once I've decided to go out on a run there's no time to lose, because any second I could change my mind!Every sunday morning I spend convincing myself and my hubbie that this is going to be the sunday I'm nót going out to run. I tell us that I'm too tired, too overworked, and that I simply don't have to. Hubby nods understandingly and than says nonchalantly, that since I'm staying he's going to take a bath. In his case this means two hours of stewing in the bath, while I stew in the living room with all the children. The promise of two hours all alone with

Mothering in your aerobic zone!
2008-03-20 07:09:00
Amongst runners it's a well known fact: the importance of training in your aerobic zone. In your aerobic zone you're doing precisely enough: not too much, but not too little either. If you push yourself too hard, in other words: when you're working out in your anaerobic zone, your body starts to protest with painful muscles and fatigue. On the other hand, if you don't push yourself hard enough you won't improve. That's why the best trainingprogramme combines periods of effort with periods of rest. It's a constant search for balance. The same principle applies to motherhood! As a mom you can push yourself to hard and start mothering in your anaerobic zone. Just like in running, it's important to balance effort and rest. When you're in your anaerobic zone as a mom you'll notice you get angry fas

I'm running on emotions
2008-03-19 07:35:00
When I start my daily run, I run on joy. When there's nothing left of joy I run on determination. When determination is all gone I run on satisfaction for having gotten that far. Unfortunately that lasts only a few minutes, so I proceed to run on willpower and stubbornness. By then I'm sweating and my head is turning red from my efforts. Then when I'm almost done I run on adrenaline and the annoying things that happened that day. That's te part of my run I go fastest. And even though I've run on all kind of emotions , at the end of my run I'm all tanked up.

Use of schedules
2008-02-20 07:24:00
The work of a mom is cyclic. The laundry, meals, raising the children: these things keep coming back. Sometimes this can make you feel like you're stuck in a rut. When you feel like you're stuck in a rut as a runner the advice is to create variation. Try a different route, play with your pace, go running with a fellow runner or change your training programme. So when I felt like I could scream if I had to do another thirty minute run, I registered with Myasics and got a trainingprogramme for the 10 k! Gone were my feelings of boredom: I was going somewhere, and it was only 10 kilometers away. You can do the same as a mom. Try to look at your daily schedule and tasks en try a new approach. You could, for examply register yourself at Flylady. Flylady is your own free coach who sends you your s

Running makes you more attractive
2008-01-18 08:06:00
I'd been running and my hair was all over the place, so I decided to pin it up. Usually I let it fly wildly around my face as a refection of my mood.On the way home from school a neighbourhood boy looked at me admiringly and asked: 'Did you get a haircut?''No, I just pinned it up!''Niiiice', he whistled.I was pleasantly suprised but then he said: 'Normally you look really stupid'Which just goes to show that running makes you look more attractive !

Setting goals
2007-12-11 07:39:00
Ask any mother what she hopes to achieve for her children and the answer will probably be: 'That he'll be happy.' Certainly an admirable goal, but how do you go about achieving it? Isn't the goal 'As long as they're happy' comparable with a beginning runner saying: 'I want to run the New York marathon?' Here motherhood can take her cue from running: set a goal, and then chop it up in little goals, that are achievable in the short term. This will give you a feeling of succes and encouragement.Sometimes your goal can be as simple as 'getting through the day without screaming'. Other days you can set your sights higher: 'Playing board games with the children without screaming.' At the end of the day you can put your feet up at look back at a good day's work. And at the end of your career as a

Dazed!
2007-12-01 10:48:00
More annoying than the dogs themselves, I find their owners who stand by with a tender smile on their face, while their dog is molesting me.'He means no harm!' they say encouragingly while their dog is aiming for my ankles. And when dogs, who obviously haven't read that memo, sink their teeth in my calve anyway, the owners usually say accusingly: 'He never does that!' This statement is often accompagnied by a look that says: 'You must have asked for it!'So when I heard about a little apparatus called the 'Dazer' I was delighted. 'Just one push on the button of your dazer and the big bad dog will run away!' the company states.I wonder if it works on their owners too...

I want to relax! Quickly!
2007-11-26 10:42:00
Often people look me meaningfully in the eye, put their hand on my shoulder and say in the voice usually reserved for the severely ill: 'Why don't you take up meditating? Or yoga?' And they give me a little tap on the shoulder. But just the thought of meditating or yoga is enough to give me a rush of adrenaline. The idea to sit somewhere quietly makes me want to scream.Luckily running is a form of meditation! The repeating movement of legs and feet have a meditative effect, and fresh air and nature have a calming effect too.So I'll just run my impatience and stress out of me, and run my way to rest.Because I do want to relax more, but quickly!

Lying
2007-11-17 10:34:00
Sometimes I go for a run and my feet are dragging, I'm bored and all I want to do is go home. Those are the days when senior citizens pass me by, as do toddlers on their tricycles. A little voice inside of me keeps whispering: 'Why don't you go home! Then you can eat that big mars bar. You know you want to!'But I know that little voice and I know it's not too bright. So I say reassuringly: 'I'll just run to that tree over there, and then we'll go home.' And once I've reached that tree I say: 'So, now I'll just run to that lovely tree over there, and then we'll call it quits.'This way I lie and cheat my way fifteen minutes from home and then I whisper: 'Well, it'll take fifteen minutes to get home. We might as well run.' And since the stupid voice wants nothing more than to lie down on the

Don't go running when you've just dyed your hair! For a minute there I thought I was literally sweating blood, sweat and tears, when I saw red droplets on my arms. With red dye trickling down my face I hastily ran home, hoping no one would see the evidence that I'm definitely not a natural redhead. At home I quickly took a shower to wash away the evidence. From now on I'll live my life as a brunette.

Running is a mom's best friend
2007-10-26 12:00:00
One of the most important reasons for me to run is the feeling it gives me. Although motherhood comes with its own rewards, the end result, a well adjusted adult, will only be visible eighteen years down the line. As it's impossible to run the New York Marathon on a day's notice, it's equally impossible to pick the fruits of your work as a mom on a day's notice. Both endeavors require your continuing personal investing. And did I mention you have to invest? So on the days when the children behave like, well little children, and I'm wondering if I'm doing a good enough job, when the current results are disappointing and the future is uncertain, running gives me instant confirmation and a reward for a run well don. While I'm running I think to myself: 'See me run! While other people are sittin

Fight or flight: that's the question!
2007-10-20 11:51:00
Falling sippy cups, muddy feet on recently cleaned floors, fist fights, spionage, are just a few of the stressors in the life of a mom. It's no wonder that the average mom is high on adrenaline. She's on full alert: ready for fight or flight. Fighting with your children is not the parenting thing to do, so that leaves flight. Which brings me to running. The perfect way to get rid off all that superfluous adrenaline in an instinctive response.'Yes, but what about the children?' you may ask. You can't just leave them on their own, can you? Not to worry: put them on their bikes and let them ride along. My son Ot, who's six, has proclaimed himself as my personal trainer. He's training me, as he's training his pokemons. He foresees a big future ahead of me, en thinks soon I may be ready for my

Teaching by example
2007-09-22 08:24:00
I'm quietly hoping to teach my children by examply through my daily runs. I mean, having such a sporty mom, has got to mean something for their education? Right?I want to give them the present of running as a means to feel better, gain confidence and find balance. It's one of my better gifts, if I do say so myself. And it looks like I'll have to because nobody else does. One day I asked my eldest daughter hopefully: 'Hey Maartje, are you going to be as good and smart as mommy? You know, go running every day and all that?''No' she said decisively, 'because I think running is stupid.'So I ran for half an hour to show her how well I deal with disappointment. As a gift, you see.

Teaching by example
2007-09-22 07:25:00
By running I secretly hope to teach by example. I mean, having a mom who goes for a run every day has got to set a certain standard, doesn't it?I'd like to give them running as a gift. A means to battle the blues, a means to gain selfconfidence and inner balance. A free method to find yourself. Yes, it's certainly one of my better gifts! If I do say so myself. And sadly I do have to say it myself, because nobody else will. When I asked my daughter Maartje the other day: 'Hey Maartje, are you gonna be just as good as me? You know, running every other day, and being very happy and healthy?'. (presentation is everything!) 'No', she declared firmly, 'because I think running is Stupid.'So I ran another block, just to show Maartje how well I cope with disappointments. As a gift.

Ten reason why moms run
2007-09-19 08:19:00
1. You teach by example. By running you're showing your children a way to stay healthy and get rid of stress. This is especially good since more and more children struggle with their weight.2. Running means time for you.3. You'll gain in self confidence.4. You'll be healthier.5. You get peace of mind6. You get rid of superfluous adrenaline and stress, so the next time someone spills their drink you won't go bananas.7. You'll sleep better.8. Your mind wil work better, which always comes in handy when dealing with children who are very creative in finding excuses not to do things, like cleaning up after themselves.9. You're not only a mom, wife, employee, you're also a Runner!10. Yes, you cán eat that mars bar.

The marathon of motherhood
2007-09-18 07:42:00
As a mom you're naturally equipped to run. It starts with the delivery: a physical endeavour that asks a lot of your body. Just as much as a marathon would. And later, as your child grows up, many mother has to run fast to save her child from danger, like a falling cup of coffee!Just like running motherhood requires persistence. Of course you could quit halfway through, but then what? How are you ever going to get home? There's nothing for it but to plough on!Running helps you find balance in motherhood. It gives you 'me-time', a sense of self, confidence and a healthier body. And hey, you can eat that box of chocolates, since you'll burn the calories right off!

If there had been a t-shirt saying 'Running is stupid', I would have been proud to wear it! But then, when I'd just given birth to my fourth child, a friend told me how she ran around the park whenever she got the chance. She described runs around lakes, passing ducks en birds and just thinking to herself: 'Isn't life great?!' 'And', she added, 'running calms me right down!' In spite of my antipathy for running my interest was piqued, because in my busy schedule as a mom of four, I was always looking for some calm in the storm. I found a training schedule for beginning runners, and for a week I huffed and puffed mys

The marathon of motherhood
2007-09-17 08:10:00
As a mom you're perfectly equipped to run. It starts with the birth of your child: an experience not unlike running a marathon. And as a child grows, many a mother has to do a sudden sprint to save him of her from a falling plant or something. And just like running, motherhood requires perseverance. Of course, you cóuld stop midway, but then how are you ever going to get home? There's nothing for it: you might as wel continue. The same goes for mothering. Even though you sometimes feel like quitting, in the end you persevere. There's no turning back.Running helps you find a balance in your motherhood. It's a time for you, and gives your a feeling of confidence and peace of mind. And hey, the fact that running has a streamlining effect on your body is a nice bonus. Sure you can eat that bag

Running is cheaper than therapy!
2007-04-12 10:54:00
American psychotherapist Gontang nog longer has his clients lie down on a sofa! For thirty years he takes them running! But you don't necessarily need a therapist to feel better by running.Gontang advises to take a few deep breaths before you start to run. This way your parasympatic nervous system is stimulated which helps you to become more calm. While you're running focus on your breathing. Imagine how your breathing in all kind of good stuff, and every breath out you release your annoyances, grievances and disappointments.Do this outside! Nature enhances the positive effects of running. Being outside makes you realise there's more to life than you and your problems. Being outside makes you glad to be alive. When I'm running, with every outward breath I think about the bad report cards f

Running in circles
2008-01-27 06:37:00
In general I run in circles . I run out of the house in some direction and come back the other way. Just running 5 miles east, and then coming back the same way gives me a feeling of 'Been there, done that, got the t-shirt to prove it.'The drawback of running in circles is ending up where your started. And even though yóu know you've run a lot of miles, how do you prove it? Who's to say you never really went anywhere, and sat on a parc bench the whole time?!Sadly the same thing applies to your work as a mom. You do the laundry, cook the meals, do the school run, and at the end of the day you're back where you began. The laundry has miraculously grown back, you'll have to do the school run all over again and the kids are hungry again. You end up where you started. That's why I'm so happy wit

The decision to be a runner
2008-01-19 06:27:00
The decision to become a mom is irrevocable, and you only have to make it once. Even if you've sent your kids to a boarding school, far, fár away, you'll always be their mother. Of course you cóuld say: 'Today I'm not a mother,' but who are you kidding? Your striae tell a different story. This is where motherhood differs from running. The decision to be a runner is a decision you have te make time and time again. Every time you have to decide to put on your running shoes and running clothes and go out there. And once outside you have to decide to put one foot in front of the other in a fast tempo. Not only that, you have to make sure that for a short moment you're airborne, because otherwise you're just a very stressed wanderer. You could stay on the couch, with your hand welded to a bag o

My own style
2008-01-13 12:18:00
Sometimes I'm running and I feel quite happy. I look around me and admire the trees around me, a cute little horse and beautiful flowers. But then I hear the light footsteps of a fellow runner who easily passes me by. Suddenly I feel my ambition rising and a voice inside me says: 'You're not going to let him just pass you by?!''Of course not,' I say, and I move my feet faster. But the distance between me and him just grows and grows, until he's just a little speck on the horizon.Discouragd I plough on. Suddenly I don't care anymore about the things around me. I can only think: 'I'm slow. I'm a very slow runner.' And crankily I ask myself, how after six years of running I'm still more like the tortoise than the rabbit. Then I remember: the tortoise won the game!Just like in motherhood, it's

The process of running
2008-01-07 12:05:00
The problem with a 45 minute run is that you can't do it any faster. It's about the process, not the speed. You'll never hear a proud runner proudly say: 'Today I ran my 30 minute run in just 15 minutes!' In a way this knowledge brings me a kind of sweet peace. As a mom, I'm often rushed, trying to get the kids to school on time, getting dinner on the table and my work done. I speed through my day like a modern Speedy Gonzalez, always on the go, always going somewhere. But sometimes going nowhere. An endurance run puts an end to my hastiness. I start out rushed, but halfway through I realize there's no point in rushing. The results are in the process of running . This is a lesson that applies to motherhood too.You can't rush of hasten motherhood either. You can try of course, but your childr

Runner's high
2008-01-01 11:55:00
On this misty, first day of the year 2008 I was vegetating on the couch and thinking of reasons why I definitely was nót going to go for a run. It was too misty, too cold, I didn't want to, I was too tired, why should I etc. But suddenly I jumped up from the couch, put on my running clothes and said in a stunned voice: 'Apparently I'm going to go for a run!'I asked my son Ot (6) to join me on his bike. This way I would not only get my kicks from running but also from begin a Good Mother. Ot immediately started talking, and talking and talking. I could regulate my breathing by the short pauses in which he waited for my 'uh-huh'. I ran and I ran, and Ot talked and talked. After about thirty minutes Ot was finally talked out, and asked me to practice some numbers with him. I shouted: 'Three
