Auto pilot
2007-12-29 04:10:00
Sometimes you do things on auto pilot. You may find yourself suddenly at place B, but you can't remember how you got there. This isn't so bad if your destination was place B; it's not so pleasant if you were supposed to go to F!This happens to me regularly during running. Suddenly I find I've run three miles without having been aware of doing it. Suddenly I find myself at that old mill, or at that house with that annoying little dog where I always shake my legs around, or that nice little bench in the park. You shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, so you won't hear my complain about having run so easily I can't even remember. But sometimes I get the feeling I've lost myself along the way! That I'm back there somewhere, perhaps lying hurt in a ditch or something. I feel an irresistible

I don't wanna!
2007-12-21 04:05:00
Sometimes I put on my running shoes while whining to my hubby: 'I don't wanna ! I don't feel like it'. Hubby has a simple solution: 'Then don't go!' So I tell him my 'Don't feel like it-theory'.'Yes, but I never want to go out and run. If I wait till I feel like it, I'll never go. Some things you just have to do, and then you'll start to feel like it!' I said triumphantly. 'Besides,' afterwards I always feel great!'When he heard my theory my hubby got an excited gleam in his eye, and too late I realized my mistake. Because there's another area in which I often don't feel like it. But it was too late to run away.

Cool and hot
2007-12-18 03:59:00
With the temperatures finally dropping I'm forced to wear my black running tights, combined with a very ugly matching sweater. For a much needed extra layer I wear a man's bodywarmer. And to top it of, I wear white running shoes. I'm not cold, maar certainly not cool either.Although it's not very athletic to worry about how I look, I long for summer when all I have to wear are some running shorts and a simple while shirt. But I just found out I can do even better: running skirts! And since I always dress in skirts, my heart skipped a few happy beats when I saw these little skirts.Wearing these skirts I'll be both cool and hot!

Chocolate santa's and running
2007-12-14 03:49:00
Eating chocolate santa's is very nice. The chocolate breaks easily into bitesize pieces and melts slowly in your mouth. But as soon as the last piece of chocolates enters your mouth, you become overwhelmed by a feeling of discomfort. In the following hours you'll feel bloated and fat, and you tell yourself you'll never eat a whole santa again.Running on the other hand can be hard. You get sweaty and tired. Your head takes on the colour of a tomato and your hair goes all over the place. But as soon as the last mile is run you become overwhelmed by a feeling of joy. In the following hours you'll feel good about yourself and confident, and you tell yourself you'll do it again soon.So ask yourself this: would you choose the five minutes pleasure of a chocolate santa and hours of discomfort and

Whip you body and kids into shape!
2008-03-29 05:57:00
Running and raising kids have a lot in common. Just like you whip your body into shape by running, you whip your children into shape by educating and raising them.I have, for example, decided to train for the 10 kilometer. And just like a child protests agains the demands you make on it, so my body moans and groans when I make it run more miles. It protests with tired muscles and responds slowly. But in the end it adjusts! My body becomes lean and mean, a real running machine! And the moans and groans become shouts of joy.The same thing applies to raising your kids. Let me give you an example: I've decided that, in the future, my kids can make their own beds. And just like my body they moan and groan and respond with resistance. But slowly and surely they'll adapt and soon making their be

A fresh outlook on things
2008-02-29 11:42:00
The work of a mom is cyclic. The laundry, the meals, raising the kids: these tasks keep coming back. Sometimes this can leave you with a feeling of drudgery and boredom. When you feel bored as a runner, the advice is to shake things up a little: run a different route, use different speeds, change your way of training. I used to run three times a week for thirty minutes, but now I'm training for the 10 km. Gone is my feeling of boredom: I've got a new goal and a different way of running. You can apply this method to your work as a mom. Take a fresh look at your daily activities and try something new. You could, for example, become a member at Flylady. Flylady is a free coach who sends daily emails with your tasks for the day.Use the schedules from running and apply them to mothering. Divide y

I'm too sexy for my skirt!
2008-02-28 11:38:00
Since man and woman are equal, men should be allowed to wear skirt s too, right? So Utilikilts created the Spartan: a running skirt for men. With nice airconditioning, and the possibility to scratch where it itches! And they're not just for running. You can take your sixpack with you in your workmanskirt.Nevertheless, there's a good reason Right Said Fred sang: 'I'm too sexy for my shirt,' and not 'I'm too sexy for my skirt.'

Too busy to run?
2008-02-27 11:36:00

I'm running on...
2008-02-25 11:32:00
When I start my run, I run on Motivation. When that's all gone I run on Determination. Halfway I change to Satisfaction, for having gotten so far, but that usually doesn't last long. Then I run on Stubbornness for a long time, and the last miles I use all the Adrenline and Annoyances from the day. Those are the miles I run the fastest. And in spite of the fact that I have used up a lot, I'm all tanked up after my run.

The day after
2008-02-24 11:26:00
This film is about the day after a marathon, but it could just as easily be the day after giving birth!

I've had a revelation, also know as an open-door-experience, or simply put: 'Duh!-moment'When I read my trainingschedule for the 10 kilometer I was amused. Those people at myasics obviously didn't know who they were dealing with! To run three minutes , walk two, repeat 8 times? I could do that five years ago! I was breathing quite heavily, but I did it.But anyway, you have to give people a chance so I decided to follow the schedule. And while I ran, in my mind I wrote the asics people a kind letter, letting them know their schedules were very misguided. Hey, they might even be thankful for this information and reward me with some nice new shoes! A girl can dream, right? So disdainfully I ran my three minutes, walked two en repeated the process. Imagine my amazement when I found I'd never co

New Year's resolutions
2008-02-20 08:50:00
I've decided that my lifestyle should be much healthier. So I'm going to run every day, just as soon as I've completed the school run. That's to say, Tuesday is going to be difficult. Because then Ot has his speech therapy. And now that I think about it, Wednesday is going to be a problem too, because Ot en Piet have the day off. Thursday is difficult too, because Maartje has a late start. Friday I just háve to finish my weekly column. Saturday is booked solid with grocery shopping and other mondain things. And on Sunday the good Lord wants everyone to rest. But Monday, is going to work! Definitely.Or not.

Schedules
2008-02-19 05:01:00
Motherhood is like the Dutch weather: unpredictable. Even if the weather forecast predicts sunny and clear, it may just as well turn out rainy. If there's one thing motherhood has taught me it's to go with the flow. Nevertheless, I often long for some certainty. You know, when expectations match with reality. That one plus one is two and not three. That taking the children out bowling equals 'nice outing' en not 'please knock me out with that bowling ball'.But motherhood is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get, thank you Forrest Gump! One of the reasons I like running so much is that, with running, one plus one dóes make two. If you go running your body will get stronger and fitter. You don't have to worry that after three months you have to conclude: 'Boy has my

No pain, no gain
2008-02-13 04:49:00
If someone had offered me the opportunity to skip the whole proces of giving birth, and just have my baby handed over to me on a silver platter, I would have declined. My answer would have been a firm 'no'.The whole process of giving birth is connected to the process of becoming a mother. And painful though it was, it made the end result, a little baby in my arms, all the more beautiful. The pain of the contractions made me focus on my body, on the here and now. I wasn't thinking about the groceries, or making plans for the weekend: I was having a baby.Without the pain and effort of giving birth, for me, the high and relief of the actual birth was lower.I learned this from the births of my first and fifth child. Both times I ended up in hospital with an epidural, to my great relief, by the

Isn't she lovely?!
2008-03-31 06:13:00
I may be dressed in an unattractive, cheap black outfit, my head may be tomato-red and my face may be contorted from the effort of running, but in my mind I'm like the woman in this movie!

Good luck!
2008-04-06 07:32:00
My training to run 10 kilometer in 60 minutes is almost finished. Just one more training to do, in which I have to run for three minutes and than walk for one. According to myasics my fitness level has soared to a dizzying level of a 100, and my fitness curve reaches for the sky. What has struck me the most during this training programma is my much improved pace. But, not once during the training program did I have to run 10 kilometers. And yet myasics tells me to go and run a race, and cheerfully wishes me 'Good luck'. But how do I know I can do something, if I've never actually practised it!It's a lot like giving birth and motherhood: you prepare, you read the books and you train, but you can't practice the actual event. So in the end there really isn't anything left to say but: Good luc

Give yourself a break
2008-03-05 07:25:00
Because of Spring break I missed two of my scheduled runs. Worriedly I logged into my training schedule at myasics, and was relieved to read that my goal, to run the 10 kilometer in an hour was still attainable. It made me feel optimistic: apparently you cán be a slouch now and then without permanent damage to your goals. And what goes for running, goes for motherhood. A bad day of motherhood, when the children are driving your crazy and you lose your temper, doesn't mean you've screwed them up for life. You can still attain that goal most moms strive for: happy and balanced children. So give yourself a break when you're having a tough day.Things that take a lifetime to create, can't be ruined by one bad day.

The ending of something old, the beginning of something new
2008-04-12 13:13:00
Now that I've succesfully completed my 10K program I feel strangely lost. What do I do now? It's a bit like the feeling you get as a mom, when you and your children enter a new phase of their development. Gone are the familiar routines, and you have to find your way again. When your youngest starts preschool for example. Suddenly you find yourself with a lot of free time on your hands, and no where to put it! Not to mention the moment when your children leave the nest. They don't call it the Empty Nest Syndrome for nothing. But just like a running programme that ends, the end of a phase in your life as a mom offers the opportunity for something new, something different. So I've decided to build on my 10K accomplisments and go and train for a 10 miler, and you can do the same as a mom. Everyth

One foot in front of the other
2008-04-14 06:46:00
I found this great, encouraging song that applies to running and mothering! Well, motherhood* can be an uphill climbI'm gonna meet a lot of resistanceIt takes every ounce of strenght we've gotIf we're gonna go the distanceWe can get discouraged and lose our courageWorrying 'bout the daily grindBut life's a journey, no need to hurryIt's one day at a time[Chorus:]One foot in front of the otherTake one step and then take anotherKeep on walkin', we're headed in the right directionPuttin' one foot in front of the otherLittle by little gets a whole lot furtherHittin' our stride, one foot in front of the otherWhat's down the road we can't sayAnd the road behind don't matterBut every mile along the wayIs just another mile togetherUnconcerned about the twists and turnsWe're takin' it nice and slowS

Head on the run
2008-04-13 06:41:00
I was happily running along when I felt a little pinch in my left shoulder. Within minutes I was convinced this was the end of me, and wondered which songs I wanted to be played at my funeral. My body got a work out, but my thoughts were the ones who broke a personal record.

Running like a child
2008-04-20 11:48:00
Today I saw my child ren doing it again: running for the fun of it. They weren't running because they wanted to go somewhere, but just because. Because running feels natural, because it feels good. When I see the children running around like that I always wonder when I lost that feeling. Nowadays I run because I'm in a hurry, because I have to do the laundry, because I'm out of potatoes and I have to go and get some and the clock is ticking.I blame high school! All those obligatory rounds running around the parc, where I always ended up last. Ok, there was one girl who was even slower, but she was very overweight. So that doesn't count. To me the feeling of running like a child is captured in the intro of the series The Little House on the Prairie, where the Ingalls children bounce through th

Says the left side of the brain: 'Why are we doing this?'
2008-04-28 07:15:00
The left side of our brain helps us to think. We use it to solve all the riddles motherhood poses to us, and to structure and organize our lives. We've got creativity and intuition on the right side of our brain. This is where you get all your bright ideas from! It's not suprising a lot of writers are also runners. The right side of your brain brings you to yourself. One of the most important missions of the left side of your brain is to make sure you're comfortable. So as soon as it perceives stress, for examply when you go out for a run, it starts to splutter like an overprotective mother: 'Don't do that! You'll get hot and red in your face!'.It evens throws in philosophical questions to get you to stop: 'Why are you doing this?!' Your left side of the brain can think of a myriad of reaso

Running is cheaper than therapy!
2008-05-02 05:54:00
With all five kids at home, for yet another school break, my nerves are a trifle frayed! This morning when I woke up I just wanted to curl up and hide under the covers. But since there's no point (kids will always find you!) I did the next best thing: I put on my running shoes told the bickering kids they could watch tv for half an hour, and ran out the door as fast as I could.Slowly but surely my mind calmed down and I began to feel better. By the end of my run I felt ready for the world, yes even for my kids!Where would I be without running?Probably somewhere in the bathroom, crying.

Kristina Pinto

More and more women take up running. Who are these women, and what makes them want to run? From now on: portraits of Running Moms! First running mom is Kristina Pinto !Could you tell us something about yourself? I'm 30 years old, married, and I have one son named Henry who is 3 going on 13. I work in Boston as a researcher in higher education, but I've also worked as a college instructor and editor. We live out in the country north of Boston. How old were you when you started to run?I got into running as an adult--I hated running in gym class as a kid because it was always about sprinting, not conserving energy and using it smartly. I started running after college because I had no money and it was a cheap way to get exercise and stay in shape. I started slowly--one mile at a time--and can re

Training programs
2008-05-14 04:37:00
After successfully completing two myasics training programs for the 10-K I'm roaming the internet for a new training program. Having tasted from the heady combination of motivation and coaching a program offers, I don't want to go back to 'just run for 30 minutes, double over gasping for breath, repeat three times a week'. But it's not that easy to find a suitable training program. It's not that ar

Even though I've been running since the birth of my son Ot, seven years ago, I still find it hard to think of myself as a runner.Because aren't runners those lean and mean people that run about in very small, flappy shorts with matching tops and a number pinned to their chest? And don't runners go really fast? I don't match any of these criteria.'I hate sports!' I tell friends who know me from way

Running companions
2008-05-20 11:20:00
I have different kinds of runs. And I don't mean skipping like a child or doing tempo runs, or desperately-crawling-towards-the-finish-line runs. I mean different in the company I keep. For example, there's my one dollar portable radio companion run. When I do my radio run I always do a lot of arm exercises, because the reception is so terrible. After my radio run I'm all up to date on the state of
