HotM Meme: What I Wish I'd Known.... 2008-03-20 22:52:04 I'ts "meme" time at Heart of the Matter again! This week's topic is "What I Wish I'd Known" during your first year of homeschooling. In a way, I was lucky. I knew before marriage that I wanted to homeschool my children. So their entire childhood was approached with the idea already firmly fixed. And when my kids seemed so bright and capable of learning easily, I was just over the moon! In a way, that was actually unlucky. Because of planning to homeschool, I was too eager to get started when my son was really too young.I started when he was 4, trying to teach him simple things. I didn't push a lot, but it was too much for him. He's not a "paper" kind of kid. He didn't do well at it, and I tried too hard to make him. This set us up early for confrontations over schoolish expectations. It's m
Notebooking Page: Spring Acrostic 2008-03-20 19:03:40 "What Is Spring
?" asks this notebooking page. This page features 6 boxes, with the word "S-P-R-I-N-G" spelled out into them, so that your student can use each letter in a different sentence or short paragraph. This would be perfect for free-verse poetry, off-the-cuff thinking, or anything you want it to be.**Spring Acrostic**
Notebooking Page: What I've Seen This Spring 2008-03-20 08:23:45 Happy first day of Spring
, everyone! If you like your children to keep up with the fun and interesting things they see, here's a simple page designed for that. 4 boxes with a few lines underneath each one - let your child draw a picture in the box with a short description underneath.**What I've Seen This Spring**
Notebooking Page: Blank page for poetry or other things 2008-03-19 11:25:59 If you'll be working with poetry, perhaps you might like this page. It features a box down the left side with lines, and a separate set of lines down the right side. In the box, just write out a favorite poem, or your own composition, then your essay, notes, etc. on the right side of the page. This page would have other uses as well, as it is not titled and therefore not restricted to just poetry.**Blank Poem Page**(I'll be making other variations of this page in the coming days, just keep your eyes peeled.)

WFMW: Storing files online 2008-03-19 08:15:24 Everybody needs a place to store files
from time to time, and I've found a great FREE place to do so. I use MediaFire and so far I'm loving it!You can upload as many files as you like, up to 100 MB in size, any format - as long as they follow the TOS and the Acceptable Use agreement, of course. (No porn, nothing that you don't actually hold the copyright to, etc.) Then you can share the item, or keep it private. You can also lock up a file with a password so that only people with the password can get the file.MediaFire is what I'm using for the moment to store all my notebooking pages, and it's working great. It's free (supported by ads on the page), very easy to use, and stores a LOT. That definitely Works For Me!

Frugal Friday: Checking prices at the cash register 2008-03-14 07:58:04 One of the tips you'll see over and over again about saving money at the grocery store is to watch the cash register screen as they ring your prices, to make sure you're not getting overcharged. But one of the best ideas I ever read for implementing this, I've only read once. When possible, do NOT get in the shortest line. Don't get in the longest one, either - just get behind someone who's only about halfway done, if you can. This gives you enough time to get settled in and get most - hopefully all - of your own groceries on the belt by the time the person in front of you is done. Then, when the cashier starts in on your stuff, you are free to pay attention to the register screen and watch the prices, correcting any mistakes before you actually shell out money. Now, those of you with young Read more:Frugal

Notebooking Page: The American Quarter 2008-03-24 10:17:56 Do you know what the technical terms for the front and back of a coin are? The front is the "obverse" and the back is the "reverse".
I thought a series on money would be fun, and here's the first entry - the American
Quarter. I've made this design in only two sizes, standard wide rule and half-inch primary. The blank boxes at the bottom are intended for your student to draw a design - perhaps
