Lantana - sketchblogging, inner stirrings, paint & inspiration
2007-04-09 17:44:18
#416 Lantana Larger Image. I think that is what is is called, it is among these that the body is found in the movie Lantana (Great Movie) This is the last one from the Sydney trip in this batch, we now move on to horses a week later in New Zealand - that is the trouble with mt journalling here - I can’t just post up as I go, just too busy. So the journal is all out of chronological order. Never mind. Even if the chronology is messy there is are journeys running through this year of the sketch: Lots in New Zealand & Christchurch Some trips to Wellington Christmas I did a real sketch trip to Aoraki - Mt. Cook, this was a good warmup to more travel sketching Then Napier, but just did not manage to sketch much at all - too much NZAP Conference work. Australia for a week, late March 2007, beaches, bush, cityscapes, flowers & wildlife - more to catch up on. ~ The sketchblogging is important to me, I like it & will keep going with it post TS. The recent

Highly individuated - poorly integrated
2007-04-11 05:51:20
#422 Highly individuated - poorly integrated Larger Image. I am not even sure if “Highly individuated - poorly integrated” is a real possibility in the psychological sense, but it is the phrase that came with this doodling, and it seems to fit. It fits because if it is anything more than doodling and exploring various techniques I am not aware of it really. Yet rather unpleasant figures crop up occasionally, maybe I just keep looking. Pastel Figures
2007-04-16 03:00:18
#434 Pastel Figures Larger Image. Pastel because I clicked on the pastels. Colour black. You can see the way pastel shows up on different “paper”, yes bits are on different paper, virtually possible. I think the influence here is listening to Bob Dylan’s Theme Hour XMRario show. It is the last sentence that qualifies this as a sketchblog post. ~ Technorati tags: art digital painting drawing sketch sketchesdigital art tablet_pc tablet new+zealand sketchblog painter corel artrage

Figure and Tones, combined sketches
2007-04-16 02:53:02
#432 Figure and Tones Larger Image. Later, while looking at the previous two images, which were done independently, but within minutes of each other I noticed a conjunction of form… so I pasted one on the other. Then “enhanced” the ink layer as I needed to soften the background it was on. Pelican in Flight
2007-04-16 02:41:31
#427 Pelican in Flight Larger Image. The abstract emergence is interrupted by a sketchblog item. This is from the time in Australia, by the beach in Narrabeen travelling with Josh & Amy. More from that time coming up. A journal and a blog about our trip, frustratingly delayed. And even as I write there are sketches of the mountain brewing. Mt. Lyford is glowing outside as I write I I want to capture those moods. I have added the Sketchblog Category, and will update the whole blog retrospectively. There, done, I now have a sketchblog for 2006-7 year of the sketch. What qualifies posts for this category? They reflect my life as I sketch it, outer life & inner life. Hmmm, they all do that… perhaps it is to do with my purpose, these are a journal of travels, even in my own circles. ~ Technorati tags: art digital painting drawing sketch sketchesdigital art tablet_pc tablet new+zealand sketchblog painter corel artrage

Hidden, and notes about process & digital sketching
2007-04-16 02:30:27
#423 Hidden Larger Image. I have been reluctant to post these, scary. I began the abstract sketches in the next bunch while exploring settings in Corel Painter X, so they come somewhat unbidden, yet I am more interested in what comes than the techniques I am using. I do learn, and will soon have a few more favourite “brushes” and “papers” and “media”. I want to honour what simply emerges. Digital art can have such high production values, focussed on technique and rendering and illustration, especially of scifi & fantasy that the format has a look that Kate called stilted, that was the word I was looking for but found it hard to find as technique and skill are often high, and admirable. I’ll post up some explorations of digital art by others that I like, that’d be good! For now here are my scratchy sketches. Sketches are a slight, light step to something else, their life is seen in the context of their journey. ~ Technorati

Dream: Calm Death
2007-04-18 15:52:51
#435 Dream : Calm Death Larger Image. I dreamt a leader had died. Not tragically, but in the right sort of way. Perhaps he was an artist or a Psychodrama director. There was a ceremony with many who were intimately connected. In the dream I was given a clear image to sketch of the man who died, and this reproduces it fairly well.

“A Writer’s San Francisco” - Eric Maisel - author - Paul Madonna - illustrator.
2007-04-18 08:48:21
I wrote a post while back about a book I read by Eric Maisel. Yesterday I received two more books written by Eric. A Writer ’s San Francisco and Ten Zen Seconds Let me talk about the first one. What a beautiful hard cover book. The production values really sine through. Click the Amazon link above & see great reviews, I agree with all those five ***** star ones. Not that I have read all the essays yet but I love the link he makes with his Paris book. What makes Paris akin to San Francisco ? Nothing except that there is attraction to the bohemian life. As it sais on the web blurb: Every writer needs a simpatico environment to be productive, and what better place than that mecca of creativity, San Francisco? It is a &ldquo ;Guided Journey for the Creative Soul&rdquo ; His focus is writing but I read sketching. And like the Paris book there is the encouragment to bring forth. If he is a writer he will write, whether atop Nob Hill or South of market. This works for me,

Worcester Gallery & Alison Ryde
2007-04-19 14:24:42
Right opposite the Arts Centre Café is the Worcester Gallery . In the early 80s we looked at buying this house, but bought Chester Street instead, as this one had too much work to do on it. All that work has now been done. I had an hour or two free & decided to pop in before doing some work in the café. I knocked on the door & was delighted with of the works in this gallery in a boutique little hotel. I particularly liked the works of Alison Ryde, a Christchurch artist now working in Italy. One of hers I like follows: Alison Ryde

Papergraphica
2007-04-18 17:36:12
I visited Papergraphica the gallery & Printmaking place that is just around the corner from where I live. They had beautiful stuff on the walls. They collaborate with artists! Situated in Christchurch, New Zealand, PaperGraphica is a printmaking studio that specialises in fine lithographs, woodcuts and etchings. Artists travel to the studio, generally staying for a week, and work with master printer Marian Maguire and her team on single images or suites of work. Each printmaking medium has its own characteristics and it is the response the artist makes to their chosen medium that enlivens the work. All the images produced at PaperGraphica are limited edition original multiples. They are not copies of previously existing artworks, and both artist and printer work intimately with the process. Some images follow. The first one is by Nigel Buxton, the next Gretchen Albrecht Gretchen Albrecht

Update, Matthew Collings - artist, critic, presenter, links to interview, more about art talk.
2007-04-20 17:52:34
Hi there, glad you found my site, or have returned, a rambling post coming up… I update older posts from time to time, Just added more info about one of my podcasts. I listened to a Kim Hill interview with Matthew Collings I strongly recommend it, you can download it from the link. Kim gets a good conversation going. Main theme, is great art possible today, especially in painting? Or is it at best a clever satirical footnote. He seem to think it is the latter. He respects highly another critic: Clement Greenberg who was originally quite radical and anti-capitalist, then, according to Collings saw the problems with society as “deeper”. Now that is an interesting idea. If it is not capitalism but deeper, and I think it is, how can we hold that and not dissolve into despair, even clever despair is not much use. Perhaps despair is a layer to go beyond & not around. Going around it is usually just boring, sentimental, pollyanna, feel good. Hope is not what i

I have updated the Thumbnails link on the right - they are now all there in bunches of 100. Have look: Thumbnails 000 - 099 and each page has links to the others. And what follows are the sketches I did in March , I’ll post up this months when the month is done. I am pleased with the months efforts! At that rate I will not complete in one year, but I have the sabbatical coming up!

yBas, Stuckist, Remodern, amodern, Tracey Emin
2007-04-22 12:21:53
Remodernist Manifesto Good stuff, but I still don’t relate. ~ Early on in this blog a friend thought this project was ‘amodern’, I prefer that to remodern, post modern, stuckist… ~ At the origin of Stuckism (in that it is a reaction to her art & calling her ex stuck) is Tracey Emin who is famous for stuff like the unmade bed. Ok, sounds like bullshit, but I can see it in the larger context of her art which takes autobiographical art, (”naked blogging” as I do here to a very mild degree) to the ultimate edge. She exhibits her life, her bed mates names, her underwear, her contraception coil. I think she has some guts, and she does follow through on a concept. Images, links follow. Earlier post I made about autobiography. And link to a comment I made ages ago about biography on another blog. ~ white cube ~ On the couch with Tracey Emin ~ Amazon ~ I see this column as an open letter, to be read by many. I have always thought the role of an art

Debate?
2007-04-22 11:43:17
Contemporary art is mostly crap, cynical, driven by the market, bullshit. Mathew Collings & Robert Hughes might agree. They differ in that Collings might add that some of the crap is better than other crap. Some quotes & images follow. Mathew Collings: The mandarin people in charge of the Turner Prize, and the media people at Channel 4, and middle-class people who run the art columns on the broadsheets, all assume ordinary people must have this stuff explained to them — but the motivations for doing that are completely bullshit. It's for commercial reasons, to get the ratings up. … they don't even pretend it's out of decent motivations. … I think you can be involved in an intelligent way, and that might mean being sceptical. It might mean thinking against the grain. But that's only because you're thinking about the bigger picture. I mean, if I think of Sickert - his paintings are characterized by a little bit of light in a general gloom, and

Circle
2007-04-28 04:10:57
#450 Circle Larger Image. This one is the last of the dozen “unnamed” ones, and I just named it, it is unnamed no longer. After doing these circles I went back and deleted some of the layers, and I prefer the minimalism than the tones in the previous one. What do you think? Have I posted the “emerge and enhance” post… don’t think so, will do so. That is what is happening here I doodle & let something emerge & then enhance it. I think of it as nature & human collaboration. It is not just that this doodle was enhanced (on this occasion by deletion!), something in me that is more than 5 decades old that is being noticed & enhanced.
