I am looking at a lot of paintings & painters so they are appearing here. Not in their style but mine. This one is copied from his self portrait. The main thing on my mind as I did this and also the next ones I am posting tonight is not art but technique, learning to use Corel X.
I have liked Hopper for a long time. Ever since I was given a calendar about 20 years ago of his work. My psychotherapy rooms are in a very Hopper like building.

Posting late, did this a couple of weeks ago at one of my favourite cafes. It is one of a project of cafe drawings. The earlier ones took me a lot longer, I am getting sketchier & more in the moment with them, but that does not mean I am happy! One of the “Categories” that will remain I think, with many more to do. I have a lot of cafes to visit yet!
What is the point of these?
Life.
Cafes are where I see life and where in a position to draw.
A category that will remain? Yes - some will go. I am simplifying that long list.

Been up at Mt. Lyford for a few days & am warmed up to horses, the dog & landscapes. But all I’ve done is finished off this one from days ago sitting in the café where I did the last one.
I have a swag of photos to work from so I hope they work out, no idea when I’ll do them.
Off to Sydney Australia for a week on Tuesday & I hope to do plenty there, the main thing would be Australian bush. Planning to go to The beaches and the Blue Mountains.
Traveling with a Tablet PC is not that easy as I will be outdoors and away from power 7 away from the Internet, but stay tuned, something will appear.

Opera House & travel notes 2007-03-24 13:31:33

A hot hazy day with little colour on the harbour or in the sky but the sails of the Opera house stood out. I love this building. I watched it being built in the ’60s, a real ’50s building, everything had fins & looked ‘futuristic’. A group of us climbed over the fence one moonlit night & climbed to the top of the main sail, on my last night in Sydney before I moved to New Zealand. A night to remember.

Alas, sketched three days ago! Too busy living life to sketch. I am getting further behind, but have plenty of inspiration. We had a good day on the beaches yesterday & today we are with a friend in the Blue Mountains. Stopped in Lane Cove national park on the way. lots of photos of bush, birds & lizards.

Back to the day in Sydney. A great day, we went back to Manley in our rental car, caught the Manley Ferry to Sydney and went to the Archibald Prize exhibition.
Then walked the streets with a few minor errands, like walking up George street to Dymocks to look for a bird book, this is from a photo of some people in the crowds.
One day in the city was enough.

Tent, Tablet PC, and a project! 2007-03-29 13:37:09

It is not really that comfortable or that easy to sketch on a Tablet
while camping. But I did a bit! What I did have is power to the site, wireless access and shade so I could see the screen (almost adequately).
However I need a desk! One of the hardest things to find on the go is a good desk.
I did find a nice little gazebo with a good table in it, but no power, and too bright.

Our week in Australia was a really interesting bird watching week. Amy was quite focussed on it, and I want to sketch everyone I saw. Here are the first two, beautiful big fat pelicans that hung out by our swimming spot. These birds are the icon for this area. I don’t think I saw many, if any of these on the South coast where I grew up.

It is almost a week since we were in Narrabeen on the coast just above Sydney when I began this sketch & the next few. Which is a pity as I feel like Journaling
the trip, but it is too late, I am back in New Zealand and back at work.
I have wondered what will become of my interest in sketching & art once the 1000 are done. Well here is one thing that is almost certain, I will start a Sketchblog, a sketch journal. It has begun here in a way, but it will have a different life outside of this project.

A lovely sketchblog I have just added to my links. I have added it because I like the sketches and also because I like the travel sketchblog notion. My Thousand Sketches include some of that & also will lead to my sketchblog later in the year.
I like the line & wash in Martha’s blog, all in real media! I can learn a lot from that, as I “emulate” the medium.

We spent a couple of days in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Again we saw heaps of wildlife & I wanted to develop further the pastel trees I did earlier. But I don’t think this a development in the right direction. More to do.
