Unique in New York 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I remembered days before we headed for the states some mates were talking about how cool (or dorky) it would be to come back home with an american accent. Well i've sorta notice..that i now tend to say "no praablem" instead of "no worries" =PToday was awsome cause an american girl actually asked if I was from New Zealand! I've been getting alot of "r u austrailian?"...which sux, I mean I don't say "feeesh n cheeps" do I? But thats cool...at home people say i have a somewhat "non-classifyable" accent, cause its sorta a blend of Hongkie, Kiwi and and whatnot there is.After work I told my workmates how I "charmed" this american girl with my New Zealand accent....they laughed it off saying cause its "unique in New York
"!....it was cool cause i recalled back in New Zealand how people say that immigrants aren't integrating well enough in society....but in NYC it really celebrates it in a weird sort of way!! I mean for example little Italy and chinatown is right next to each other, the
americans + random photos 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Two entries in one post:1. ..........I was conversing with this guy at work today. Russian dude named Eugene...lived in NYC for about ten years... just talking bout how americans (esp NYers) are so extroverted, while the rest of the world is the opposite. It really does take awhile to adjust to.....especially doing my job...where i have to "dialouge" with Americans on the street...you really are forced to become extroverted. Its quite awsome actually..cause in a way...Im building up my confidence (which i lack).Im trying to understand the New York attitude.....I think you really have to push hard to show them who you are...that your are the real deal and show them where your coming from.......to cross that "barrier" is so hard...but once you cross it....it all seems pretty easy going from there. I suppose thats why they say..."If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere"2. photo dump.Hours before arrivalFirst glimpse of manhattan skylineSomwhere on broadwaya brownsto Read more:photos
Big city life, tryin to get by..... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Its been 10 days since I arrived at NYC, and after "jumping hostels" and carrying excessively heavy suitcases around the city subways (looking like foolish tourists), me and a few has finally found a place to call home for the next two months, namely brooklyn NY.So far its been hectic.....but also enjoyable. Los Angeles was ehh..sorta disapointing (no offence!), for a city with its population it seemed.....hm...quiet and unusual..... tho I will not be quick to judge as I was only there for two days. However, New York City has "wowed" me since the moment i arrived! The first glimpse of that famous skyline, the people, the diversity, the subways, times square, chinatown...its still "wowing" me...it'll probably keep me "wowing" for a long time..Its quite surreal, I feel like I've been sleeping all along in Auckland and suddenly receiving a wake up call half a world away. Essentially I'll be living (not visiting) New York, waking up and go to work, pay the rent and go to sleep. I'd
I got a job offer! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I had two job offer
s today! Im really stoked and relieved about it! No more running around manhattan like guinea pigs handing out resumes and going for interviews! (tho it was fun doing it with two others). I was getting a little worried about not being able to find a job..considering the others have already found jobs......but God really helped me out this time..i've prayed really hard about his...can't praise him enough! So I'll either be working at1) Virgin Megastore at times square! I'll probably be on sales/cashier. The place is huge the pple working there seems cool. They were pretty impressed with my music knowlege (had to fill in a four page music/movie quiz). Pay is okay...a bit low, but i definetlely see myself working there.2) Diologue Jobs, working as a fundrasier for this organisation called "children international". It sounded like a very rewarding job and the pay is very good. Thing is I'll be out in the cold 8 hours a day going through thousands of rejectio
DUMBO 1970-01-01 00:59:59 DUMBO is an acronym for "down under the manhattan bridge overpass", a neighbourhood in brooklyn. Me and Jlo decided to go for a walk since there wasn't much going on and even an ill man like me could only handle so much boredom (did i just say boredom in NY!?). Well yea... apparently DUMBO offers 'magnificent' views of manhattan , and so it was.some sorta UFO....do u see it? Read more:DUMBO
Top of the rock 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So i've been in new york for 51 days, and only blogged 8 times....what a shame lol. But yea, life is pretty busy here, rush, non-stop. I've realised that in new zealand I would open my window or walk out the balcony and take a deep breath of fresh air...something i'd take for granted....also something that i wouldn't have time to do here...or even think about.I've resigned from my fundraiser/dialouger job due to illness, and probably thought i should get a indoor job from now on....its getting colder here, just started snowing!Lastly I had to chance to go up the "top of the rock" observatory at the rockafella centre yesterday. Offers great views of manhattan. A 'pre-highlight' would be going up the elevator....was pretty cool...i got it on video. So yea the view was good! COLD! but good....Oh...also took a peekaboo at the st patricks catheral on fith ave.
no regrets but....... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 i kinda miss new york..... i don't know.....ok i really do! damn...its too the point where rather do nuthing but sleep till 2pm cause its so damn freezing outside and wake up and not do anything till like 5pm cause its still so damn freezing outside (like i did the last few days there) but u can still shop till 9pm in SoHo and still still have dinner with friends after..........then being in this nice warmer weather, with beautiful mountain and ocean scenery and and having this relax vibe all around you...and the people are so damn friendly...and the cities aint to shabby either....and the food is so damn cheap!yea...hm...
seattle-vancouver 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Besides from missing all the happenings in nyc, me and jlo have been spending our last few days in seattle and vancouver. Both are nice, comparable yet distinct cities. Maybe its because i've arrived here just after being in nyc.....that i felt these cities are slow paced and sorta boring ...heh. I do like the weather tho...in seattle...not vancouver!Seattle's streets were freakishly clean n pretty (coming from ny) and the people were suprisingly friendly. The pike place market is a must for anyone visiting. Also space needle and Uwajimaya, huge asianmart was also pretty cool. Oh and to top the day off... i had the best two hour coffee/bookstore reading session in my life!Vancouver...just rained n rained........city is full of residential high rises which makes the cityscape look glassy sorta cool. Didn't really have an itenery until our third day (the rain sorta mellowed us)...which that day we headed out to richmond which is the unoffical "chinatown", half the population is
AC/last days 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Gosh...can't believe its been over two months here in nyc...and in another five days...I'd be leaving here....its mixed feelings......but its still 5 more days...so i guess theres no time to think about it...and really just get the most out these last five days!On another note! I got to go on a road trip today with my buddy Jeff to Atlantic City, NJ. "AC" as known by locals is a mini version of Las Vagas. While not as expansive as LV, it still got some really fancy casinos like trump, taj mahal, cesears...etc. So yea...our day was very simple, got there.....gambled, ate, gambled...then went home. I think in total i spent about 4 hours on the roulette and two hours eating....was fun. Earned some cash...not much....but happy. But yea...its a story i would have to tell you in person.....and i'd probably never gamble again.Verrazano bridge from brooklyn to staten islandroad trip......car sick...outside resorts casino...don't go there.inside taj mahal casino, go there.wasn't sup Read more:last days
comment yo! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Firstly, I appreciate the comments everyone gave me in my last post. It just makes the blog so much cooler. So yea keep it rolling people, friends or strangers, vistors ..it doesn't matter…..…this seemed to work for Kirby so Im gonna try it..heh"I ___________ read your blog, and would love to comment" (don't be shy =) and I hope you don't mind Kirby for me stealing this) Hmmm….So yea…I was reading this news article on the Screen Actors Guild awards…and Brits like Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons were praising how good Americans were as actors and how much American film actors has influence them Heres something british actor Jermey Irons said that I thought was quite funny: "In fact I remember the first time I went to New York and I asked the guy on Fifth Avenue the way to Madison Avenue. "He said 'What do I look like, the information bureau?' And I thought everybody in America wants to be a movie star, because they all sound like movie stars." So true,
Metropolitan Museum of Art 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Hmm what i can say, alot has happened since my last post, and at the same time, not alot has happened... I've been sick the past week which was quite horrible, couldn't work, couldn't breathe with all that goo in my nose...yea it sucked. period. What didn't sucked tho, was the MetropolitanMuseum
of art. On one of my "better" days, me and jlo decided to head there for a visit. Also known as "the met", it is one of the most important museums in the world, and certainly was impressive. From the Nan Kempner clothing collection to the asian arts and extensive arts and display, it definetely had a 'wow' factor on me.As I said, quite a bit has happened...so I'll try to post those events later (xmas, new years..etc) Read more:Metropolitan Museum
ma peeps 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I've been posting alot of peopleless pics on this blog, so i thought i'd dedicate this post to the people i've travelled miles with and also people i've met so far.Especially would like to say thanks to stuart, hilary and marie (the "kiwis in brooklyn") for making the ny experience so much fun......trying to move around brooklyn by subway with our massive suitcases would be an insignificant but fond memory you guys haha.....plus marie for your heartfelt renditions of irreplaceble by beyonce.and most thanks to jlo ma man, whos been the backbone of this whole trip, alot of things wouldn't have been done without you.was nice seeing puili too!+kevin, nick, phil, grace, kash, candy.....who probably don't read my blog....haven't met you guys long enough but still many thanks.

san francisco 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I feel sorta torn, first there was New York city...but now I feel like im cheating on it cause im starting to fall in love with San Francisco...haha. Whats not to love about this city!? Everywhere i go or any place that I eat at I just want to come back again and again. Biking throughout the city and especially through the Golden Gate bridge was such a once of a life time experience....I must buy a bike when i come back to NZ. Oh and did i mention the food? huge burritos, fishermans wharf, eat your heart out dim sum....a foodies heaven. I must come back here someday......someday..In about ten hours I'd be heading back to New Zealand...im really excited. Can't wait to see ya'll in Auckland, where the sky is bluer and green is greener haha...being away from there for so long has made me appreciate what we take for granted back home. At the same time, these two great american cities have left such a great impression on me....i'll be back someday.
back in auckland (reflection) 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So now Im back in this shitty old boring place called Auckland, haha no ok im just joking. Though I use to sorta feel this way when all you can do here is study (try to..), eat, laze in the sun and have senseless long afternoon naps. Before taking off to the states I was telling fellow travel buddy jeremy how ridiculous it was that kiwis would go on these big overseas experiences (OEs) just to appreciate what we have in New Zealand...i mean don't u go on OEs to experience what other countries have that we don't!?So...uhum.....yea....during this whole trip, I actually have gained an unexpected appreciation for little NZ. As I have said previously, so many things we take for granted back here..clean air, good sport facilities (like full size swimming pools!), not having to commute an hour cause rent in manhattan is way to expensive...having time to breathe.......and so on...OK besides that, NYC... was freakin awsome! Probably the best experience i've had in my life, and even if w Read more:reflection
flushing meadows-corona park 2007-05-09 16:50:00 On one of my last few days in New York, i made a visit to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens..... having written down a list called "the 'endless' list of the places to go before I leave". Of course, i never even came close to fufilling that list (which included The cloisters, Prospect park, brooklyn museum, anywhere in the bronx so i could at least say i stepped foot inside the bronx...=P....etc..), anyways the park was on that list. The place was empty, pretty much no one in sight..(was friggin freezing)...except for this middle aged caucasian guy jogging around the unisphere....asked him to take a photo with me in it...he was sorta reluctant...but after a bit of convicing that itd be quick...he took the camera. The guy really couldn't take a clear picture......and apparently couldn't even speak english, not being able to understand my instructions.."just half click...then push down", "can you come a bit closer?", man!!...oh well i gave up after a few tries...and he tells m Read more:corona
chinatown 2: some pics 2007-05-25 18:06:00 McDonald's asian cheesiness =Pdurian stall (just like malaysia...)yay under 5bux IS possible!pearl river mart, its not really in chinatown..but pretty close by in the very cool Soho and very cool store!
Chinatown 2007-05-25 04:13:00 I love chinatown, and if i had an awsome super duper digital SLR (which i don't ~_~), i think i'd snap so many pictures that the memory card in it would explode! Lol.... well maybe that wouldn't happen, but my point being that its a pretty cool neighbourhood. We had our first meal in NYC right here, and as we were on a budget....we had to eat on a budget (seriously...like 5 bux was considered overpriced) and we knew before we stepped foot on american soil that chinatown is land of cheap! Aaaas a result our first meal did turn out to be fairly good, fairly cheap.. tho the tipping thing didn't go down too well for me (at first) as i wasn't used to it .As an ethnically asian person, it was exciting to see a place like this smacked within a plethora of distinct neighbourhoods all around NYC. A McDs with a chinese sign, a stall hanging with durians, a crab escaping from the seafood stand....it had familiarity to the countries i've visited and lived in asia...quite homely actually =). Central Park Zoo 2007-06-11 12:10:00 I remember the day we went to the zoo it was soooooooo freaking cold, my friend promised me that he'd either take me to the cloisters or the zoo. It was a weekend and surely one of those days where you'd just like be cozy on your couch with a hot mug and read a book or watch a movie....or rather just sleep in. So thanks heaps to him for bracing the cold with me, it was lovely too hehe...The main reason i wanted to go because i heard that they had snow monkeys and I've always wanted to see a snow monkey ever since I saw pictures of them relaxing in hot springs in Japan (+ I had an obsession of everything Japanese back in high school)...they're soooo cute! Unfortunately this photo below is all i can show....mainly because they were also soooo cold that they went into hiding! I had a glimpse of them tho.....but still that wasn't satisfactory!why can't u guys be more brave and come out for me...=(Oh well, it was a small zoo, but very nice nonetheless! Plus there is a zoo in ever Read more:Central

photo dump: san francisco 2007-06-16 22:17:00 I now understand why Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco! Where cable cars "climb halfway to the stars!", where "fog may chill the air, but I don't care!"...its gloriousness, its blue and windy sea and its golden sun will always have some place in my heart. It was unfortunate that our baggage got delayed and I couldn't charge my camera for the first few days. Even more unfortunate was the only few days we had planned to be here, little did we know this small piece of land had so much to offer. For me, this was the epitome of the American dream; sunny skies, liberal and peaceful, good food, diversity...this was it! I was mesmerized by the grandioseness of the bridge and the hills, the stretch of sea. And the food was sooooo amazing, I've never been excited about vegetarian and food court meals looked so gourmet!I could say a thousand things more about this place! But let these selection of photos speak for themselves! The first thing we did was experience the mission b
Museums 2007-07-11 07:24:00 Coming to New York made me realize how much of a museum geek i was! I never had the opportunity to see that "side" of me in Auckland since theres just a hand few of of them here (i only know one...) and wellington? Well there is Te Papa museum which I always enjoy going to but its pretty much limited also. So New York kicks New Zealand's behind when it comes to museums, with over 80 of them.....it really has it all.I visited about 6 museums during my two and a half months stay... and I've realize that you don't have to just go for the "pursuit of greater knowledge"...so to speak. Its actually a great place for a date, or to catch up with someone...or a meeting ground for new found friends and stuff. I remember coming out of the museum of Natural History not knowing one thing about dinosaurs but chatting with a friend and getting an education of the different types of American accents and slangs. So i guess weird/interesting conversations happens in less interesting museums also
Ferrero Rocher 2007-07-15 07:46:00 Well not quite ferrero rocher...found this in an asian supermarket in Jackson heights, Queens. Looks exactly like the ferrero rocher chocolates we see but a different name...Jinnuo chocher. This really takes fake to another level doesn't it...after the pirated dvds and fake LV bags and perfume. Wonder how its tastes....
L'ecole 2007-07-29 14:00:00 Imagine a restaurant where you can dine on a 5-course meal, get exquisite service and admire the stylish decor without the hefty price it usual comes with. The answer is L'ecole, Voila! We had always wanted to experience some fine dining in nyc, but we missed restaurant week and couldn't really afford the prices. So I found L'ecole, a restaurant within the french culinary institute in SoHo, where the food is prepared by students from the school. Thought it sounded brilliant, then the price...$39.95 for a 5-course dinner, quite a bargain! So we booked for dinner at 8.30pm.Don't underestimate these future chefs, these people can cook! You could tell they had skills by just looking at the food. And the taste was well worth the money. Add in informative servers, and well lit decor, it was a pleasant experience.L'ecole is located on 462 Broadway in SoHo
Mary is back! 2007-10-26 04:28:00 The first single from Mary J. Blige's new album "Growing pains", im really feeling this joint haha. This is what she had to say:
"That song was written based on me having a good day," Blige explained. "You know, I can have 30 or 40 bad days. I can have as many bad days as anyone. But I choose to say, 'I'm just fine.' Right now. You know those days when your hair looks good, you're not sitting
