Hussein Chalayan: fashion's great innovator 2007-02-18 11:30:16 Our article today is inspired from the recent massive coverage of Hussein
Chalayan’s transformer dresses in many established fashion Magazines like Vogue, Elle, Style, I-D, to name a few.
One of the features in their March 2007 editions is the coverage of the Spring 2007 trends: futuristic and an odyssey of metallic and science fiction fantasy.
Hussein Chalayan has fascinated and captivated the audience in his Fashion Show last October in Paris. A lot of coverage has been given at that time to Hussein Chalayan’s transformer dresses but we decided at that time not to cover his show because we want talk2myShirt to focus on ‘already available’ products and DIY tips to make your own creations. You may say, we are more on the ‘practical’ side.
The recent media attention made us coming back to Hussein Chalayan’s work because it shows again the strong coming of Wearable Electronic - our main focus in this blog.
It is very interesting to see that fusi Read more:innovator
DIY Wearable Electronic - Textile Switch 2007-02-16 06:59:14 Whatever electrical function we want to integrate in our clothing, it has to have at least one switch, to switch this function on and off.
To make an electrical textile switch is easier than you might think, especially by following the instructions worked out by Leah Buechley.
Based on the idea and DIY instruction from Leah, we show how to create a single switch that uses only textile materials. With this instruction, you can create your own versions with multi switch keyboards or give them different shapes.
Please visit Leah’s Website for detail information where to get the materials. She has links for each item needed that helps you to find out where to buy them.
What you need to make a textile switch:
Fabric glue
Patch conductive fabric
Patch of felt, wool or a similar thick, springy material
Patch of fabric for the outside of the switch
Scissor
Start by cutting out a square of felt. This will be the soft and springy center of your switch. Cut a hole out of the center of th Read more:Wearable

iDope iPod Jacket from Dope+Drakkar 2007-02-15 07:38:21 Although the winter season will end soon, we want to introduce you another iPod
Fashion product for the cold days.
The company that came to our attention is: DOPE&DRAKKAR which was established in Tokyo, Japan by Eichiro Sakata in 1994. “Dope” is a drug and “Drakkar” is an addict. Eichiro wanted to make clothes that were addictive as drugs.
This company’s philosophy made it a ‘must’ to look for innovative additions to their clothing line and to ‘proof’ the point, they launched last January the iDope iPod collection.
The iDope works with all iPod models except with Gen 1+2 and all iPod Shuffle.
It has the ’standard’ build-in iPod control from Eleksen but the iDope is different: rather than be woven into the material as play and pause buttons iDope has a set of simple colored buttons in the front center line of the Jacket
.
In this, way the technology is completely ‘hidden’ and there is no ‘fear̵

G-Tech Professional Messenger bag - iPod Control & Speaker 2007-02-13 10:00:59 We have an update on the Professional Messenger
Bag we have posted back in October last year: the Professional Messenger Bag from G-Tech is now available and ready to ship.
Short summary of the Professional Messenger Bag: A iPod
remote control keypad based on Eleksen’s ElekTex ’smart fabric’ is integrated into the shoulder strap to conveniently control the iPod that is stored and protected inside the Bag.
Also built into bag is a thin, flexible loudspeaker from NXT that leaves your ears free to hear traffic and let you share your music with your friends and the world around you.
Fortunately to the people around you, you can turn off the NXT speaker and listen trough ‘normal’ headphones as well.
The ’speaker in the bag’ function comes handy if you want to make your presentations more livelier with sound; just place your bag on the table. Or have action sound for your games when you are on the road.
Via the built-in connector, you can use the spe Read more:Control

Marks & Spencer launches NXT-enabled laptop bag 2007-02-11 06:27:47 Wearable Electronic keeps growing this year, as we predicted earlier. This time, a so called ‘household name’ is joining the trend: Marks & Spencer
(M&S), the renowned UK high street retailer.
NXT, a provider of unique sound solutions and best known for its flat panel loudspeaker technology, announced M&S has introduced the Enterprise Workbag with In-Built Audio based on NXT’s flat speaker technology.
The ‘Enterprise Workbag with In-Built Audio’ is designed to accommodate a laptop computer and features an ‘invisible’ NXT flat panel speaker embedded within the front panel of the bag, allowing users to enjoy high quality stereo sound wherever they go.
With its professional styling and protective removable laptop sleeve, the M&S bag is both smart and practical. Compatible with MP3 players, iPods, laptops computers and other audio devices, the NXT-enabled Workbag is the perfect alternative to portable speaker systems as the lou
iPod Shell with Speaker and Controls from G-Tech 2007-02-10 15:22:22 Â G-Tech announced last January during CES a new water repellent carrying case for iPod
s. The Sound Shell
is a semi-hard case that protects your iPod from environmental hazards.
The Sound Shell is made of waterproof fabric, and completely encloses the iPod and makes sure it's completely safe.
But if your iPod is totally enveloped in this case, how can you use it? How can you skip songs or change the volume? That's where the Sound Shell's magic comes in. Integrated into the fabric shell are the pressure-sensitive ElekTex smart fabric controls.
And if this is not enough for you to run out and buy one, G-Tech added sound to the Shell, hence: Sound Shell. The sound magic is provided by using the NXT flat panel speaker technology. Listen to your music privately with headphones or share your tunes with the world through the ultra-thin NXT speaker built right into the shell!

Glacial Jacket with "Gesture Control' from Spyder 2007-02-07 16:07:58 Spider added to the Wearable Electronic race their second product in this field by introducing the GlacialJacket
in the 06/07 range.
What makes the Glacier Jacket standing out is the “GestureControl
” that allows the adjustmect of the volume on the iPod or any other MP3 player via a touch-sensitive pad on the upper left sleeve with a brush or tap of your gloved hand.
Spyder
’s Glacial Jacket has a unique touch-sensitive pad instead of the more common ‘push’ keypad. You control the volume on any MP3 player through gesture control: an upward-stroke motion over the pad increases volume, downward swipe decreases the volume. Simply tapping the mute area turns the music off or on respectively.
We like that! Something different, cool to use and to be honest, stroking (gently) is a better treatment for your body than pushing (or pinching) it - right?!
We couldn’t find any hints on who is providing Spyder with the gesture control technology but it ver
Luminous Fiber Optic Heart Pillow 2007-02-06 15:22:24 Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we give you some tips how you can make it a very special day for your loved one with a bit of Wearable Electronics.

The pillow is powered by standard 1.5V replaceable batteries (included), hidden inside, which will light the pillow for more than 10 hours. A small switch inside the pillow allows to switch the magical illumination on and off.
The Fiber Optic Fabric can be hand washed with water up to 70°C and natural soap (the battery must be removed prior to washing). The Fiber Optic Fabric shouldn’t be washed in washing machine, folded (pr Read more:Luminous
Wearable Electronics a facet of (future) life (style) 2007-02-20 12:19:42 It’s the destiny and the mission of talk2myShirt to bring Wearable
Electronic closer to the consumer but also to give a headsup to the designers as well as to the clothing and electronic industry to achieve our mission.
A Feb. 16 article in the online edition of The Orange County Register, a daily newspaper published in Santa Ana, California, has taken up the topic of Wearable Electronic in a very comprehensive way.
The article starts with Anton Guerrero, 23, a rapper who’s performed at the famous Ruby Skye in San Francisco. Every day before heading out the door, he tucks his iPod nano and cell phone into his pant pockets.
Guerrero says “I feel naked” without these gadgets. Seven hours a day, he listens to his own music, reggae and rock. And he isn’t alone in his obsession. Millions of teens and 20-somethings feel the same way. And their mindset is revolutionizing the way clothing is designed.
The article goes on in stating that ‘no fewer than nine

We do not have any connection to those online stores and we want to be as neutral as possible. There are many other stores, online and off-line that have those Jackets on offer.

Double sided Fabric Keyboard from Eleksen 2007-02-23 14:53:45 The Wearable Electronic expert Eleksen
did it again ….. surprising the world with a twist to their existing fabric keyboard range: the Double Sided USB Keyboard.
This concept, presented by Eleksen during the 3GSM in Barcelona last week has a different set of keys on each side. On the top side is a standard set of QWERTY keys for text entry and whatever work you can do on a ‘normal’ computer keyboard but if you flip the keyboard over, you get the basics of a numeric key-pad, optimized key layout for page navigation and quick access keys for music.
The Douple-sided Keyboard is USB powered what let us assume this keyboard can be used with any device (incl. computer) that support USB keyboards.
A gravity switch in the plastic control module determines which side is facing up and which key mapping to use. Very smart keyboard control software solution that will act differently depending on side of the keyboard is facing up.
Amazing the creativity of Eleksen! As far as we ca Read more:Fabric
Fashioning the Future - Book review 2007-02-25 07:46:52 If ‘The New Nomads‘ was our first book review
and our first book in our Wearable Electronic books library that has cult status, ‘Fashioning the Future
- Tomorrows Wardrobe‘ is the latest and most comprehensive ‘up-to-date’ book about Wearable Electronic and Textile technology innovation.
The author of ‘Fashioning The Future', Suzanne Lee, is a Senior Research Fellow in Fashion at Central Saint Martins. The book was published by Thames & Hudson in 2005.
Fashioning the Future gives an excellent overview of the state of the art in fashion and textile innovation. Works from the big names of today’s fashion avant-garde such as Walter Van Beirendonck, Hussein Chalayan (his recent work has been covered in our Blog), and a peek into the research labs around the world.
The book is very well designed in a high glossy, black page layout and the different chapters that cover the many aspects of the Wearable Electronic and Fashion world are very
The Wearable Electronic Wii controller - meet the Fingertip control glove 2007-02-26 15:07:25 How cool would it be to snap with your finger to witch on or off your iPod or Computer or many other of the gadgets around you. Or play a cool game on your Wii
with this glove! Al least this controller
will not smash your TV.
Researchers at Engineered Fibre Structures (EFS), a University of Manchester spin-out, are very close to give us just this, a soft-fabric electronic glove that remotely controls equipment via a Bluetooth connection.
The glove is produced from standard acrylic or stretch-nylon base yarn and it can be made on a conventional industrial knitting machine. The wearable device looks and feels like a normal glove, except it has conductive pathways knitted into the material. The fingers are tipped with contactors, so if you put your thumb together with any other finger, you create a electric circuit and pang, you can activate anything that is designed to receive those signals.
Navigate your way with your fingertips trough documents in a office application or add a new inte Read more:Wearable

Musical cycling short - the Vertex MP3 Bib Short 2007-02-26 08:16:16 A new addition to the Wearable Electronic product portfolio: the Vertex MP3 Bib Cycling Short.
The new member in our Wearable Electronic family is Pearl Izumi, a company very well known in the cycling community for it’s excellent quality and craftsmanship. The Vertex MP3 Bib Short features an integrated MP3 Player and a mobile phone link via Bluetooth. The mobile phone link works like in many other similar products: if you receive a call, the music is stoppes during your conversation and comes back after you end the call.

Rocking Bag for the material girl 2007-02-28 03:15:16 Do you remember the pre-iPod and MP3 player time? Do you listen on some occasions to music without earphones? If your answer is yes, then you might be familiar with boom boxes.
They where hip and cool not so long time ago but they are soo yesterday now.
Thanks to the creativity of Lifepod of New York and some Wearable Electronic spirit, boom boxes have transformed to the more fashion consciousness lifestyle of today.
The Lifepod Rock Steady Stereo Beat Bag is one example specifically for the girls. This bag takes 4 AA batteries and is compatible with any MP3 player but also works with your beloved and chic iPod. As much as this bag sounds so cool (literally), the sound will not be as loud as it was the case with those bulky ‘ghetto blasters’, but you still will have enough power for decent party sound in the park, on the beach or wherever you will want to use such bag.
Oh well, it seems like am awesome idea to use your handbag as a jukebox but think practical, you need a go Read more:material

Fibretronic Signs Agreement with Apple Computer 2007-03-04 04:05:53 Fibretronic has announced the signing of a deal with AppleComputer
securing entry into the ‘Made-for-iPod’ licensing program. This agreement enables Fibretronic to develop and market ready-to-integrate iPod control products for wearable electronics applications in garments, bags and other soft-goods.
Fibretronic’s customers will no longer have to obtain a license from Apple to sell iPod enabled products. Under the new license from Apple, Fibretronic is able to directly supply the required technology for iPod integration, shortening and simplifying the development and production pathway for its customers. Companies wishing to produce iPod controls in garments, bags, backpacks or other soft products can get all their iPod interface technology requirements using Fibretronic as a single source from development through to commercialization.
This indicates, Fibretronic is getting more active and aggressive after the Wearable Electronic market by making it more convenient for potentia Read more:Agreement

Recourse Audio Backpack from JanSport 2007-03-06 04:47:37 JanSport
is one of the most active players in the Wearable Electronic business and we have covered their Apparel range as well as their iPod and AudioBackpack
range.
The latest addition to the Wearable Electronic range from JanSport is a backpack with integrated speaker. Adding speaker seems a new trend in the Bag and Backpack segments as we see more and more companies offering such products.
And we like this, having more choice for the Wearable Electronic enthusiasts.
The Recourse backpack features an audio port and flat panel speaker integrated in the front of the backpack. You can listen to your tunes without your earbuds, plug in any MP3 player and rock over the world. The volume control is integrated on the strap while your audio player goes into a dedicated pocket with connector inside the Recourse.
There is no mention of batteries on JanSport’s product site but we think there should be some electronics that operate the speaker (amplifier) and this electronics need some p
Wake-up with illuminated duvet 2007-03-08 05:29:05 The northern hemisphere is almost through the winter season which naturally means all those folks are deprived of sunlight or light in general. Daylight can be as short as 6 hours or even less.
The LightSleeper, an invention of Loop.pH, a group that specializes in the design and research of environmentally responsive textiles, can ease the pain for everyone short of light exposure or hard to get out of bed every morning.
Light Sleeper is an illuminating, personalized alarm integrated into bedding that gently wakes in the most natural way. Ever since the beginning of time light has controlled our body clock telling us when to sleep and when to wake.
As lifestyles are rapidly changing with increased travel and demands on our time, people’s natural body clocks are out of sync. This pillow and duvet simulates a natural dawn that eases you into your day. LightSleeper Bedding uses electroluminescent technology allowing traditional textile surfaces to become a reactive light source.

Levis Red Wire DLX Spring/Summer 2007 collection 2007-03-09 21:08:04 The winter season is over, no more iPod Jackets and other Wearable Electronic winter gear.
Levis
, a well known contributor to the Wearable Electronic trend - think about the ICD+ Jacket, co-developed and designed between Philips Design and Levis - has not less than eleven new styles of jeans and trousers for men and women in their collection
for the spring/summer 2007 season.
That’s excellent news for us iPod addicted folks that need iPod compatible outfits after we got used to that over the last winter season.
This new collection for 2007 follows the successful retail launch of the Red Wire DLX jeans in Fall 2006. It is also highly noticeable that next to the high product sales, Levi Strauss has reported that the Fibretronic enabled products have added US$5 billion of brand equity to Levis.
Now this is ‘music in our ears’ as well. We from talk2myShirt are fully convinced that Wearable Electronic is on the eve of becoming ‘big’ business and this massive l Read more:Spring

Soft touch for your home 2007-03-11 14:16:42 Because Wearable Electronic is mainly about merging textiles with electronic and because textiles are the most common material we human beings are in contact with every day in many different forms and situations. Therefore, it is no wonder that sooner or later other products that are not on our bodies but made of textiles, using Intelligent Textile or Smart Fabric technologies, are emerging.
Point in case: International Fashion Machines, short ‘IFM‘, has created light dimmer for your room lightning, based on Electro Textiles.
IFM has a wide range of different colors (see above) and different styles (see blow).
The switches are made from IFM’s patented electronic textile that magically senses your touch
. Gently touch the electronic textile (the silver grey part) and the light changes the intensity like by any other dimmer. But on this switch, you touch a warm, soft material and not a plastic or metal plate.

Wearable Electronic goes traditional - Lederhosen from Lodenfrey 2007-03-19 04:13:38 Nothing is ’save’ anymore from WearableElectronic
. During the CeBIT in Hannover (Germany), a very traditional clothing maker shows in the ’smart Textile Village’, a special section of the CeBIT for Wearable Electronic
s, their contribution and exploration into the Wearable Electronic market.
Lodenfrey presents traditional German Lederhosen with a built-in MP3 player and mobile phone management, very similar to the ’standard’ iPod clothing.
Lederhosen are very typical for Germany. Those are leather trousers preferred by thigh-slapping Bavarian dancers.
The Lederhose has a free speech mechanism for mobile phone and an MP3-Player with 512 megabyte of memory, which can be controlled via a textile keyboard on your thigh. The microphone is integrated into the shoulder strap of the Lederhose.
The Wearable Technology behind this product comes form Interactive Wear which means you need to use their own, limited MP3 player which we didn’t like by then an
Auto-snug clothing - really smart fabrics 2007-03-20 14:44:38 It seems Philips is going into the fashion and textile business. First there was the ICD+ Jacket together with Levi, then the Lumalive textile display last September and now a really smart fabric.
Philips shows us a way which gives hope that the fitting-room fiascos will become a thing of the past ….. if this concept ever forays into the world of fashion.
The consumer electronics giant has come up with a concept to change the size, shape and style of clothes by weaving “muscle wires” into the fabric. The wires are made of shape-memory alloys that change length according to the small current passed through them.
Here’s how it could work: you try on a special pair of Philips’ trousers, and connect up to a power source that changes the length of the wires in the fabric until the trousers have the correct waist size, inside leg and width.
Then simply disconnect to try the trousers in exactly your size. Philips says the technique could also be used to correctl Read more:fabrics
Solar powered Backpack 2007-03-22 13:24:21 Voltaic has a nice range of SolarBackpack
s and Messenger Bags. This is no news but we wanted to bring the Solar range to your attention because summer time is approaching and with it usually more sunlight. That’s also the time of the year where Solar power harnessing will be most effective.
Do not forget the environmental benefits. Every hour you avoid connecting to the power grid helps reducing air pollution and global warming.
The third benefit for you could be to have enough juice for your all your electronic gadgets during your extended outdoor trips.
The Voltaic solar bags are mobile power generators, designed to charge your devices without tying you to a power outlet, which makes them ideal for traveling.
Just plug a standard car charger into the bag and recharge most small electronic devices like: mobile phones, cameras, PDA’s, and MP3s. Note: it is not designed to charge laptops.
If you don’t have a car charger, the bags come with a set of 11 standard adapto
