Pelfrey and Hernández Have Different Styles, but the Same Goal
2008-03-19 10:48:00
...Great article from the NY Times regarding the battle for the 5th spot.A stark contrast of styles was on display when the main challengers for the No. 5 spot in the Mets’ starting rotation opposed each other Tuesday, a day off for the team. The veteran Hernández, who relies on changing speeds and location, faced the 24-year-old Mike Pelfrey, who thrives on velocity.Pelfrey’s fastball stayed in the 90s as he went six-plus innings and threw 90 pitches. He gave up a run in the second inning and a two-run homer to catcher Brian Schneider in the fifth, but Pelfrey indicated Schneider’s hit should have an asterisk next to it.“Last week he showed me a backdoor slider, and today he hit it out,” a smiling Pelfrey said of a lesson Schneider had given him. “I asked him, ‘What’s up

Former Mets GM Steve Phillips on Mets players and amphetamines
2008-03-19 08:03:00
...Extremely interesting article regarding a recent edition of ESPN's outside the lines. The show focused on a bunch of stories, interviewing former trainer Larry Starr, ex-star Dale Murphy, and current players and managers such as Tom Glavine, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa. The article had editors notes that read: In November 2005, Congress released the results of its investigation into steroid use by Rafael Palmiero. The report described reckless and illegal use of prescription drugs in the Baltimore Orioles' locker room. In 1999, a similar scene was unfolding in the New York Mets' locker room, as Tom Farrey reports in this bonus coverage from ESPN The Magazine's examination of steroid abuse. The most interesting part of the show however became the comments by former New York Mets gen

El Duque's 'slow' outing beguiling
2008-03-18 22:07:00
...Another great article from Mets.com: For as long as he has been a big league pitcher, and while he was pitching in Cuba as well, Orlando Hernandez has been all about deception -- the exaggerated leg kick, hiding his pitches, the occasional sidearm sling and the rare Bugs Bunny changeup. And most folks in the game believe numerical information on El Duque's birth certificate to be fictional. It is with that record of deception in mind that the latest episode of Hernandez's second Mets spring outing must be viewed. Caution and at least a dozen grains of salt must be used if a conclusion is to be drawn on what the "Duke of Deke" demonstrated on Tuesday morning in a game that wasn't even real, but simulated. Hernandez threw like a man testing his arm, hardly like a pitcher scheduled to appe

Mets getting 2008 lineup in order
2008-03-18 22:06:00
...This comes from Mets.com: With their one and only off-day and a second morning of sleeping in behind them, the Mets play the Indians on Wednesday night. To borrow a phrase from the contentious days of George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin, these Mets ought to be "tanned and rested," not to mention healthier. Therefore, a chance -- not necessarily a likelihood -- exists that the team that starts against the Indians could also start against the Marlins on Opening Day. CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

Ramon Castro only has "Strained" hammy
2008-03-18 15:35:00
...Great news from Mets camp - Ramon Castro who left the game on Sunday after his first ab, has only a strained hamstring. His MRI came back negative and he has been listed as day to day. This article comes from Newsday and says the following:The official prognosis is day-to-day, but it is a good sign that Castro was behind the plate catching Mike Pelfrey for this morning's simulated game.CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

Businesses near Shea bracing for uncertain future
2008-03-18 13:31:00
...Great article from Wallace Matthews at Newsday. The article takes a closer look into the effect of Citi-Field on the surrounding industry in the area. Although most are chop shops, warehouses and predominantly eye sores, they still are people and will definitely need to accept change. You have to assume that the entire area will look much different before the end of the decade, finally utilizing what could be a beautiful part of Queens. The article starts off by saying:In the foundry behind Howard Feinstein's cramped office, men were fabricating structural steel, some of which would be used across the street in the construction of Citi Field. As the Mets' new home moves closer and closer to completion, the Feinstein Iron Works, along with 100 or so other businesses in Queens' Iron Trian

Off-day won't be quiet for Mets
2008-03-18 09:41:00
...Great article from Mets.com which talks about how an off day is handled by some injured Mets. The article mentions Duaner Sanchez with the following to say:If Sanchez, who still lacks arm strength, can recover quickly enough to pitch three of four times a week -- he isn't there yet -- Smith's chances are reduced. If Sanchez needs work in extended Spring Training or with a Minor League team to restore his stamina, velocity and resilience, Smith's chances improve. That said, Smith will be as interested as anyone in how Sanchez's arm responds to his latest work -- one inning and 23 pitches Monday -- and how the staff responds to Sanchez's tentative plan. "If everything is OK [Tuesday]," Sanchez said, "I'm going to ask them if I can pitch Wednesday. I want to know how my arm will react."CLIC

Lo Duca, Milledge still have issues with Mets
2008-03-18 07:57:00
..I was dissapointed to see Milledge not play, but of course we'll get at least 18 chances to see him during the regular season. Both Lastings and Lo Duca had a lot to say yesterday to the NY media. Here is an article from Newsday which lists some comments that the two had yesterday about their old team.Lo Duca was quoted as saying the following:"Any time in your lifetime that you're not wanted, it's tough," Lo Duca said. "I was vocal that I wanted to stay in New York. But with the way that the offseason went, I'm glad I'm not there. I hate to say that, but they went through three guys and I never got a phone call, I wasn't wanted, obviously."Maybe I wasn't the first choice to begin with. I sort of landed there [in 2006] when things sort of fell through with the other guys . Maybe I wasn'

Church feeling better about swing
2008-03-22 02:19:00
...Great article about the continuing saga of Ryan Church ' first spring training with the Mets. Not only did he suffer a grade 2 concussion in a freak accident with Marlon Anderson, but he also became a father with the birth of his first son only a few weeks ago. The article takes a look into how hitting coach Howard Johnson has made Ryan Church his spring training project.Howard Johnson had the following to say about Church:"I waited until after his son was born, so he could have a clear mind," Johnson said. "It's just something I noticed since we got him, and after seeing him every day. I didn't notice too much last year. I think there is a lot more in him. He's untapped. He can be a better hitter."CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

Making a case for Brady Clark
2008-03-21 10:36:00
This is a great posting from Mets Prospectus :I'm not going to lie; when Brady Clark was signed I didn't think anything of it. I figured he would either be stashed away in AAA or released after spring training was over. But Clark has impressed me (and the Mets) this spring with his .318 average and his versatility, and I think he may have earned himself a spot on the roster. He may not be the sexiest option, because he doesn't do anything one thing great, but Clark is one of those hard nosed players, who gives you 100%, and never takes a day off. Guys like this always seem to stick around, and usually become fan favorites. But the most important thing about Brady Clark may just be that he's a right handed hitter. With Moises Alou out for at least the first month of the regular season, the

2008 Pitching Projections
2008-03-21 10:09:00
...Great article from Fox Sports which breaks down 2008 pitching projections. The article has Johan Santana with 21 wins and 251 strikeouts. Not too shabby. Here is a sample of the list:1. Johan Santana, NYM : Santana will pitch in a bigger stadium with more consistent run support. He'll enjoy making the swap to the National League. Billy Wagner will be there to slam the door. Santana has averaged 17.5 wins per year during the past four years. 2007 wins: 15 2008 wins: 21 2. Jake Peavy, SD : Peavy has won at least 11 games in five consecutive years, and his 19 wins in 2007 established a new career high. The Padres possess a strong bullpen, and Peavy's ability to work deep into games cannot be discounted. 2007 wins: 19 2008 wins: 20 3. Carlos Zambrano, CHC : He didn't challenge for the Cy You

Steven Register still looking to make team
2008-03-21 07:55:00
...Great article from the NY Post which takes a closer look into the role that Steven Register may play on the Mets. He has been impressive so far this spring ,and has a pretty flawless Minor league resume. Since he is a Rule V draft pick, the Mets need to keep him on the active roster all year or give him back to the Rockies.Register had the following to say about his performance so far:"I don't think I've earned anything yet, but the fact that I'm still here and we're almost to Opening Day has to be a good sign," said the 24-year-old right hander, a former third-round pick by the Rockies. Mets Covet Marcus Thames
2008-03-20 15:56:00
...Jayson Stark reports that the Mets covet Marcus Thames . In exchange the Tigers are angling for Aaron Heilman. Heilman fanned three times as many as he walked last year. The 29 year old right hander is certainly a more attractive arm than others who had been linked to the Tigers but Stark doesn’t see the Mets moving him. The Mets initially had said that Jorge Sosa was the one they are looking to move.

Dominant Maine takes care of Indians
2008-03-20 10:15:00
...John Maine continues to impress with another stellar outing against the Indians yesterday.During last night’s win, John Maine struck out seven batters through five innings, while allowing just one run. That one run actually had ended a scoreless innings streak of 10 innings, but the bottom line here is that Maine looks ready to go.Maine was quoted as saying the following about the Indians and himself:“They’re a good hitting team, they foul a lot of balls off, they made me work, and it’s great to face a team like that to get ready for the season…I’m ready to go, I’m bored of St. Lucie (laughing).”CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

Mets' Church getting tired of stress
2008-03-20 10:02:00
...Another great article from Newsday. This one focuses on Ryan Church , the birth of his new baby and how he is still behind the 8-ball due to all the set backs. He was quoted as saying:"Those three days off weren't really off days for me," Church said. "Everybody knew about me with the baby coming and then I got the concussion. It put me behind the 8-ball a little bit. I'm just glad that I'm healthy - knock on wood - and it's like I can turn the page, take a deep breath. My wife already told me to go back and get ready. Duaner Sanchez itching to increase workload
2008-03-20 08:46:00
...More great news out of Mets camp. Duaner Sanchez is feeling great and asking for more opportunity to pitch. This proves that he is healthy and ready to go for 2008.Sanchez was quoted as saying the following about being ready for opening day:"I don't think - I know I'll be ready," Willie Randolph was quoted as saying: “Is he on the borderline of not being able to break with us? Yeah, if he doesn’t start to pitch in succession and get his work done, then yeah, that’s going to become a real issue. But now let’s wait and see how he gets through the next couple of days and go from there.”CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

David Wright throws himself into new routine
2008-03-20 08:07:00
...Great article from today's Daily News. It takes a closer look into some of the things David Wright has done this offseason to improve his defense. I like that about Wright, that even though he won a "Gold Glove" last season he still realizes that he's not perfect. Let's be honest, it's not like he was the obvious favorite to win that Gold Glove anyway.David was quoted as saying the following about his defense:"I would trade the 'Web Gems' just to make all the routine ones," Wright said. "That's what wins games. That's where I seem to have the most problems - when I have too much time to think, or I relax a little bit. Maybe I don't focus on the routine play like I do on the spectacular play." He was also quoted as saying the following about his offense:"The aggressiveness I normally hav

Duaner Sanchez unlikely to make opener
2008-03-24 08:17:00
...This comes from Newsday.com:Although Duaner Sanchez threw another inning yesterday, it's clear that the odds are stacked against him being ready for Opening Day.Sanchez hasn't pitched in a major-league game in 20 months because of two shoulder surgeries and seems to be, at best, two weeks away. He still hasn't pitched back-to-back games, something relievers typically do toward the end of camp. "That will happen when the time is right," Sanchez said.Pitching in a minor-league exhibition against the Cardinals' Triple-A team yesterday morning, Sanchez gave up only a leadoff double. His fastball consistently hit 91 mph. "I feel great," he said. "That's all that matters."CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

5th starter spot still a question mark
2008-03-24 06:21:00
...This comes from Mets.com: The Mets were able, proud and, finally willing to identify the pitchers who are to start the first four games of their 2008 season and disclose the sequence of their assignments. Without so much as a momentary drum roll Sunday afternoon, manager Willie Randolph rattled off the names -- Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez, Oliver Perez and John Maine -- as a public service, though he was satisfying questions that scarcely had been asked. Not since the first day Martinez threw without restriction, pain or after-effect on a back field here last month had there been any sense of doubt about the front four. And chances are the most avid Mets follower could have waited another week to know the sequence of starters that would follow Santana and Martinez. What's left to d
