Lobbyists, Health Care, and Open Secrets
2008-08-24 09:20:21
In a report published by Open Secrets , a non-partisan guide to how money influences politics in the United States, the amount of money spent by lobbyists representing the health care industry is truly astounding.According to a review of lobbyists' spending in Washington, D.C. during 2007, the health care industry itself spent $445 million dollars (nearly half a billion dollars) on lobbying contrib

A Visiting Nurse and the Puzzle of Humanity
2008-08-14 12:00:39
Last night, I was doing some visits for the visiting nurse agency who recently employed me. On my fourth and final visit, I had a revelation of sorts.I drove about twenty minutes to reach this patient's home, winding through lovely country roads, past old farm houses and pastures. Reaching his neighborhood of middle- and upper middle-class homes, I was struck by how out of the ordinary this situat

One Hundred Years of Laughter
2008-08-12 19:27:18
Today I had the pleasure of witnessing a joyous birthday celebration.Held at the inner-city senior center where my wife is the director, the party was held outdoors under a threat of rain that was controlled through Caribbean rituals used to ward off foul weather. Despite low-lying clouds almost bursting with moisture, no rain came. The women preparing the festivities had taken time for ritual, dr

Bodhisattvas
2008-09-16 18:14:28
What the world needs more than anything is bodhisattvas, active servants of peace, “clothed,” as Longchenpa said, “in the armor of perseverance,” dedicated to their bodhisattva vision and to the spreading of wisdom into all reaches of our experience. We need bodhisattva lawyers, bodhisattva artists and politicians, bodhisattva doctors and economists, bodhisattva teachers and scientists, bo

A "mirror version" of Digital Doorway is now up and running over at Alensa.com. Alensa is a Swiss healthcare company which is now hosting a variety of health-related blogs and Web-2.0 functions from its home website. I Did It
2008-09-14 18:16:55
Well, I did it. After twelve years of eschewing taking a job in a hospital, I have applied for a part-time position in a local inpatient psychiatric unit. Things have been very slow at all of my per diem jobs, and while I'm very hesitant at this juncture to commit to a solid position, finances are telling me that it may be time to at least have 16 or 20 hours of assured work each week. So, this 24

(Note: This is my sixth post under the auspices of the nurse blogger scholarship which I recently received from Value Care, Value Nurses.)I have recently been re-reading From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public, by Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon. What I am most struck by is that nurses still have not necessarily found their collective voice, and despite the med

Nine Months' Gestation
2008-09-08 12:01:20
It is now nine months since I eschewed full-time work (after twelve years of having my nose on the nursing grindstone), and I am examining both where I was and where I am now. Questions abound, but answers seem resolutely elusive. There is something to say for the regularity of a full-time job. A steady pay-check is a type of financial stability that most people see as a gateway to economic ease (o

Exchanging Yourself for Others
2008-09-05 23:01:00
When someone is suffering and you find yourself at a loss to know how to help, put yourself unflinchingly in his or her place. Imagine as vividly as possible what you would be going through if you were suffering the same pain. Ask yourself: “How would I feel? How would I want my friends to treat me? What would I most want from them?” When you exchange yourself for others in this way, you are d

Thoughts Turned to The Gulf Coast
2008-09-03 13:33:55
I am simply thinking today of the many citizens of the American Gulf Coast who are living as evacuees, wondering when they can once again go home, and when life can once again resume some semblance of normalcy. My thoughts also stray to the vulnerable patients evacuated to safer ground, the healthcare personnel who have risked their own safety to remain with those too frail to travel, and the famil

Cell-Phone Ring Tones: A Cautionary Tale
2008-08-31 17:02:58
Just this past week I was doing some home visits for my local visiting nurse agency. Three out of four visits were for psychiatric patients who live on their own and need daily visits to monitor their medication compliance. I've been doing this sort of thing for years, so I always know what to expect, more or less. While I was visiting my second patient, we sat at his kitchen table as I prefilled h

My Body, Digitized: Yet Another MRI
2008-08-28 13:57:33
Ah, the whir, buzz, beep and drone of the machine almost drown out all thought. There are no lights, only the sensation that giant magnets embedded in the walls of this machine straight out of science fiction are taking cross-sectional views of my thoracic spine. How nice that I'm not actually being physically sliced in 1 mm-thick pieces. Rather, a virtual model of my spine is being transmitted to

Arousing Compassion
2008-10-06 07:30:27
One technique for arousing compassion for a person who is suffering is to imagine one of your dearest friends, or someone you really love, in that person’s place. Imagine your brother or daughter or parent or best friend in the same kind of painful situation. Quite naturally your heart will open, and compassion will awaken in you: What more would you want than to free your loved one from his or

Public Health and Me
2008-10-05 19:34:40
Tomorrow, I begin my position as interim Public Health Nurse right here in my own New England hometown. Having never worked in my town (after almost fifteen years of residence in the area), it will be an interesting experience to actually be a "public figure" for the first time. While my position is indeed interim, I'm coming on board just at the beginning of flu season, and since I'm the individua

Economics and Confusion
2008-10-01 21:48:55
Thinking further about the economic issues that I touched on in my last post, it's so hard to get one's brain around what's happening here in the U.S. this week. With such dire news and warnings of financial Armageddon, how does one tease out the truth from all of the hyperbole?Articles abound about what will happen if the bailout doesn't pass. Blame is passed from hand to hand. But where do we or

Economics and the Elderly

(Note: This is my eighth post under the auspices of the nurse blogger scholarship which I recently received from Value Care, Value Nurses.)So, as the bad news splashes across the headlines and the denizens of Wall Street throw up their hands to ward off the falling sky (that they themselves created), the elderly here in the United States are facing some tough economic times of their own as we turn
