More musical musings
2008-03-14 01:50:37
The problem with being stuck in bed (as I think I have mentioned before) is it severely limits your view of the world (mine being limited to a few square metres of sky outside my bedroom window and the garden if I actually get out of bed!). This leads, inevitably, to introspection. I was thinking about music yesterday, and I am continuing to think about music today. My first serious musical

Musical musings
2008-03-14 01:29:52
So, here I am back in bed again. Seemingly the good work done by the steroids appears to have ceased. Whether due to the course of steroids finishing, or my overdoing things and 'running before I can walk' who knows. Enough to say my remission has relapsed! So, lying in bed... feeling sorry for myself... I decide to play some music. At which point I fall out with iTunes (again). For some reason

Reading the news...
2008-03-17 14:26:03
As I can't go to the world, the world must come to me. The world and about two dozen ladybugs. The experiment of not evicting them from the premises continues... and the numbers continue to increase. I think there were about two dozen on and around the window today. My favourite moment was when one decided to climb up the string on which a crystal dangles. Round and round and up and round. Surely

Getting rid of clutter
2008-03-19 12:14:11
A while ago we cleared out our kitchen. This was in preparation of the arrival of a new oven, my Grandmother had her kitchen remodelled and offered us her three year old gas cooker, a big upgrade on our thirty year old gas cooker; and also the eventual arrival of our new fridge/freezer, delayed by the necessity of purchasing a new tumble dryer when the old one broke down and also my Xbox 360! Tribute
2008-03-19 02:00:13
Yesterday Arthur C. Clarke died in Sri Lanka. This is a huge loss for any fans of science fiction. I always found his writing to be fantastically descriptive and given the published dates of many of his works, visionary. In recent years I've enjoyed his collaborations with British author Stephen Baxter, who is often labelled by critics as the new Arthur C. Clarke (I can why given the visionary

Roadworks and a little bit of Schadenfreude
2008-03-19 01:59:21
Yesterday I was on my way out to the Doctor's surgery. As the first time in several days that I have left the house I was interested to observe the progress of the roadworks. Along the main road they have progressed a long way with what I call their 'rolling roadblock' towards Woolwich, progress seems to have slowed a little now that they have branched off into several of the side streets. Best

Internet Age
2008-03-18 04:54:48
Today I came across a survey from service provider Orange. The survey aims to calculate your 'internet age', how experienced you are on-line. Given that the internet (according to Wikipedia) is 16 years old you are given an age from 1 - 16 based on your on-line experiences. Just a bit of fun...

The Fourth Plinth
2008-03-18 02:18:02
Whilst wondering about St Patrick's Day yesterday I had occasion to visit the Mayor of London's website. Whilst I was there I noticed a section on the fourth plinth. I had to go and have a look, as the whole topic of the fourth plinth is another subject on which I have a bee in my bonnet. The fourth plinth refers to an empty plinth in the northwest corner of Trafalgar Square. There are four

Paddy's Day
2008-03-18 01:44:58
When you aren't getting up and going out of the house you tend to lose track of the days of the week, and of course the date. This explains why I've only just noticed that it is St Patrick's Day today. I always get a bit annoyed by St Patrick's Day. It is great if you are Irish to have the national day and the party and all. It is quite a good excuse if you are a student for copious amounts of

Cats rule
2008-03-21 01:23:56
If you are a cat owner (or to a lesser extent a dog owner) you will know who is really in charge in your house. Be under no illusion, it isn't you. All my life I have lived with dogs. My parents bought their first dog (Lucy, a labrador) when I was a few months old and we grew up together. As Lucy got older we got another labrador, Leo. After Leo my parents lasted a few months with no dog, and

Physio and other exercise thoughts
2008-03-20 12:18:30
Today I made my semi-regular trek over to East Greenwich to see my Physio. Despite the fact that I haven't done as much of my exercises as I ought to have done (I found it very tiring when I was back at work for a week and a half) he is still pleased with my progress. I have the hang of the 'pelvic tilt' exercises (I even remember to breathe instead of holding my breath whilst I concentrate), and

Bad sport and good movies
2008-03-23 15:00:40
Sunday is pretty much filled with sport in our house. Whatever the time of year there seems to be something to watch. From September through to February it is the NFL. From March to November it is Formula 1. From August until May there is often some sort of football; especially if you are interested in Scottish football and support Celtic (as Rich does) or interested in Spanish football and

More British weather
2008-03-23 05:06:50
Today it is serious about snowing. When I woke up there were huge flakes swirling around, and settling quite enthusiastically on the grass. Since then the flakes have got smaller and mostly melted away with only a few surfaces still covered. I'm quite pleased about this, the sooner it stops snowing the sooner it gets a bit warmer and more spring-like. I remember when I was younger it quite often

British weather
2008-03-23 04:51:00
Typical British weather . It simply couldn't make up it's mind today. Twice (for about five minutes) it snowed. It was also delightfully sunny for quite a lot of the time. One absolute constant though. It was really, really cold!

Wednesday things
2008-03-26 10:27:04
I don't know why when the Neurology department is open on Mondays, Wednesday s and Fridays that it should be that my appointments are always on Wednesdays; but they are. Today I had to go and see my nurse up at the hospital (along with attendant blood tests). On my way I was delighted to note that the Cemetery Lane bus stop has finally had the floral tributes removed and has been returned to use;

Snow no show
2008-03-26 10:02:25
The threatened snow has failed to materialise. It did snow quite a bit yesterday, sometimes seriously. There were flurries of quite large flakes, but most were brief, and none settled. No white Easter this year then. I suppose that means that we are back to spring. It is still pretty cold though. I've had the heating on pretty much all day. This has the unwanted side effect of waking up all the

Bank Holiday
2008-03-25 09:03:29
Generally speaking I find Easter Monday one of the most deeply irritating Bank Holiday s (Public Holidays) of the calendar. That or Good Friday. Basically you get two weeks in a row cut short by a day, which always plays havoc with workload and deadlines. Bank Holidays generally do quite irritate me. There are constant complaints about how few Public Holidays there are in the UK compared to other

Movie nights
2008-03-28 10:16:54
Usually Saturday night is movie night in our house, but due to the paucity of TV at the moment any night can now be movie night. On Wednesday it was Kevin Costner in 'Mr Brooks'. I didn't think much to his one, I found the pace extremely slow and the writing unremarkable. Then again, had I known it was Kevin Costner I probably wouldn't have watched it as the last two movies of his I saw (JFK and

Silicone chip cookies
2008-03-27 09:40:37
Have you ever noticed what a lot of things your computer does that you don't realise that it is doing, or that you don't really control. I have a system monitor on my Windows Sidebar, and sometimes I just sit and watch the dual cores beavering away whilst I'm doing nothing. Or take a look at the task manager and see what a lot of processes Windows is running when you've got no programmes open.

The Old Hosptial
2008-04-02 06:56:52
I've been wondering what is going on with the old hospital for a while now. Every time I went to Phsyio I'd see the hoardings and mean to visit the website when I got home, and then forget all about it, until the next time. This morning I read a post on The Greenwich Phantom: A New Heart for East Greenwich which brought me right up to date. In the course of my work I often have occasion to

April Fools
2008-04-01 11:11:56
Even those of you who don't pay much attention to your calendars can't have failed to noticed that today is 1st April . Why? Well, the absolute glut of April Fools pranks and jokes circulating around the internet today. It's hard to be sure what is real news and what isn't. Google by themselves have practically filled the internet with various pranks and hoaxes. Below are some links to a few that

Deeply dissapointed
2008-04-01 03:04:13
Last night's game was postponed due to the bad weather. Particularly disappointing for me as NASN are unlikely to be showing the make-up game (who knows, their schedule still seems to be wanting to show the game from yesterday that never happened twice more). It's a tricky time of year for NASN and MLB. The hockey season hasn't finished and there is basketball all over the schedule. I'd probably

Baseball is back (almost)
2008-03-31 12:44:32
Rich just reminded me that the Yankees were on NASN, last home opener at Yankee Stadium. So, I turned on the TV. Only to find, no Yankees. Apparently it is raining in New York. Typical!

Another movie night
2008-03-31 11:47:21
First of all, I hope that you all managed better than we did we the clocks going forwards. As usual some clocks were remembered, some clocks were forgotten, and some clocks sorted themselves out. Our radio controlled clock, usually relied on as the only clock that is telling the right time had a nervous breakdown and although apparently waiting for 4pm is still sitting waiting at 4pm. Oh dear.

Jubilee Line (and I wasn't even on it)
2008-04-04 03:46:59
There are times when you can just be glad not to have been on the daily commute. Yesterday evening the blighted Jubilee Line suffered a major power failure, stranding trains in tunnels for up to three hours. It is one of every tube travellers worst nightmares. I know every time the train comes to a halt between stations I always feel extremely nervous until it starts moving again. Of all the

Sustainability
2008-04-03 04:26:13
I've been wandering in cyberspace this morning reading various pages and articles relating to the many facets of sustainability. I've been delving into global warming and climate change, amongst other things. Some people are certain that it is definitely happening, other are certain that it definitely isn't happening. The strangest thing is that they seem to be using different parts of the same
