Axiom-man™ : In the Beginning (Pt. 1 of 3)
2007-03-22 10:11:00
It has been fourteen or so years since Axiom-man was first conceived, and I consider it an accomplishment for him to have stayed with me for so long. There are not too many other characters out there that I’m aware of that had manifested themselves in their creators’ minds while they were kids, only to be fully realized sometime later in adulthood. The only two that come readily to mind as I write this are Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon, who he created during his youth, and Marv Wolfman’s the Monitor, who he dreamed up while a child and who later became widely known during 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths.Looking back over Axiom-man’s history, it amazes me at just how an evolved—and bizarre—history it is and how it is also a kind of dual history, where both finally converged in the release of my superhero novel of the same name, September 29, 2006.Here’s how it all began:It was grade seven (1992-1993), and though I had been a superhero fan since as far back as I could re

Axiom-man™ : The Middle Years (Axiom-man™ Origin Story, Pt. 2 of 3)
2007-03-27 21:14:00
In grade eleven I enrolled in Drama class and, to my discovery, so did an old friend of mine, Kyle Zajac (who would, almost ten years later, lend his skills to the fantastic coloring of the cover to the Axiom-man novel). He and I had been friends when we were kids, but up until that first day in Drama, he and I weren’t all that close. Not only was that day the beginning of a remarkable friendship, it was also the beginning of my “coming out” era in regards to superheroes.See, Kyle at some point prior had developed an interest in drawing and it was during one of those early Drama classes that I got a look at his material. Though the majority of it was simply copies of various Spider-man comic covers, I was enthralled by them immediately. I also don’t know what made me more happier: his art or the fact that he was a superhero fan, the kind of person who had been missing in my life since that day long before when I couldn’t find my action figures. It was during the beginning stag

Axiom-man™ : But the End is Not Yet (Axiom-man™ Origin Story, Pt. 3 of 3)
2007-04-03 09:17:00
For two years after June, 2000, I pursued my writing, and took my first step into the world of publishing in the spring of 2002 with A Stranger Dead. At the time, and given my naivety of the business, I used a subsidy press to get the book out and it was one headache after another, an unforgiving migraine that continued till well after A Stranger Dead’s release in January, 2003. However, despite all the problems and all the stress—too much to get into here—that horrific ordeal ironically rekindled my love of self-publishing, something I had planned to do way back when I was going to put out my own comics myself. In February of 2004, Coscom Entertainment released its first title, Book Marketing for the Financially-challenged Author, which was a book marketing eBook primer for those looking to market their work for less than the cost of a meal. I hadn’t originally planned on expanding the Coscom Entertainment line past my own work but when author Keith Gouveia approached me about

Judgmental Christians and the Real Christian License
2007-04-20 09:49:00
When one becomes a true devotee of Jesus Christ, they are given a special license aside from the right to be a true child of God and an heir to His kingdom. They are given the license of calling a spade a spade. They are able to tell it like it is without compromise. Why? Because they have now seen the truth and are able to see different behaviors of humanity for what they are, especially in this politically correct world where almost anything goes. Even Jesus Himself spoke in such black and white terms when He was here, and He will speak in black and white terms again when He returns since His character never changes. However, this license to tell things like they are has been abused by so many that the biggest complaint against Christian ity is that we Christians are too judgmental and/or condemnatory. What happens is this:A Christian finds out about a particular behavior and/or incident involving someone that is contrary to the Word of God. The two most popular are murder and homosexual

Four-point Synopsis
2007-04-26 07:28:00
Self-publishing is massively popular. More and more books are being put out independently every year. Thanks to the Internet and on-demand printing, putting your own book out yourself has never been easier. This is both a good thing—so many worthy writers can still reach readers without having to go through traditional publishing’s red tape and/or get rejected solely because the firm, though having admitted the book was good, won’t get behind it because they feel they can’t move 10,000+ copies of that book—and bad—because many self-publishers, namely those who use subsidy publishing services (so not real self-publishers) end up putting out a terrible product.Being the huge fan of the independent and self-publishing press that I am, I spend a lot of time seeking out self-published works that I think might interest me and, if they do, I add them to my bookshelf. The only avenue I do this is via the Internet. I’ve picked up great books, I’ve picked up bad books, but, regar

The Importance of Research
2007-05-03 08:59:00
Writing fiction is the business of telling people things that are not true and making them believe that they are. If you could make someone suspend disbelief over the course of 200-400 pages, you’ve done a good job. If you could feed them make believe for the five-to-six hours it takes for them to read your book and convince them that all you’re telling them is true, then you’re a miracle worker. But it never happens. There’s a peculiar phenomenon about the human brain that, while reading a story, we can be convinced that a man can fly, that aliens are invading, that people can morph into animals at will, but when we find a circumstance or statement of supposed fact in a fictitious work, our red flags go up.Let me explain. Most fiction—science fiction and fantasy aside—takes place here, in the “real” world. The premise, no matter how fantastic, is all based on the understanding that the “earth” presented in the book is the same one you and I live in unless stated other

The Debate Rages On: Does God Exist? (Part Two of Two)
2007-05-11 09:27:00
Yesterday an interesting debate was aired on ABC.com between Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort (the former an actor and evangelist, the latter an evangelist and author) and two atheists (Brian Sapient and Kelly, founders of the Rational Response Squad). Today the remaining half of that debate was aired. Here’s what went down:Kelly said, when asked about morality, that she was hoping for a global society—the natural evolution from where we are/were as a human society—something to come after our current arrangements by way of how we help each other, trade goods, etc. This jumped out at me immediately and this topic was brought up before the actual debate-debate. Interestingly, her attitude is exactly that which the Bible says will come to pass in the Last Days: a global civilization. (And as a further side note, we’re on the fast track for that goal. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Jesus is coming soon. Get ready.)Seems one of the biggest hangs up of the RRS is the idea

The Debate Rages On: Does God Exist? (Part One of Two)
2007-05-10 08:28:00
ABC.com aired the first part of a debate between Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort and the Rational Response Squad today. According to the advertisement at the end of the discussion, the remaining part will air tomorrow. The debate was suggested, so I’ve read, by Ray Comfort, an evangelist and author, who wrote to ABC in reply to something the Rational Response Squad is doing, and that is the Blasphemy Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to see if atheists worldwide are willing to stake their souls on their unbelief in God (whether they believe they have a soul or not; personal side note: a person doesn’t have a soul, they are a soul) and commit what Jesus calls the unforgivable sin, which is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.Ray came forth and challenged the two founders of the Rational Response Squad to a debate on proving whether or not God exists without invoking faith in the Bible.Ray’s arguments, which played first, were three things:- Creation in all its enormous complexity te

Writing Methods: A Day in the Life Of…
2007-05-21 06:17:00
Someone had recently written me and commented on how prolific I seem to be as an author. And although, when I wrote them back, I maintained that my ability to put out work regularly was probably more an illusion than anything else (since I self-publish for the most part, I’m able to skip the whole submission/rejection stage most writers go through and, further, having to wait a year or more till I see my book in print), this person’s comment reminded me of my previous blog entry dealing with making the time to write and getting things done. For today, I thought it would be fun—hey, maybe even interesting—to share what an average day in my life looks like when I’m working on a project. Here it is:8:30-9:30 a.m. – get up with my son and have breakfast together9:45-12:00 p.m. – hang out with my boy, play games, change diapers, etc.12:00-12:30 p.m. – my son and I have lunch12:30-2:00 p.m. – play some more, watch a little TV, visit the neighbor or go for a walk or to the par

Jews Getting Their Temple? (Jesus Christ en route)
2007-05-30 21:38:00
Last year I ran an entry called “Jesus is Coming Soon,” and I detailed a bunch of reasons why I think so, my reasons based solely on what I see in the news every day and how that relates to Bible prophecy.Well, another interesting development came to my attention the other day: the Jews will soon have their new temple, something that marks a milestone prophetically speaking as we approach the end of the age. Numerous Scripture passages talk about a temple being in place during the final days of mankind. Jesus spoke of it, Daniel the prophet did and so did Paul the apostle.Read the third paragraph at the following link:http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/860476.htmlIt is commonly understood that when Jesus gave the parable of the fig tree in Matthew 24, He was essentially saying that the generation that saw the rebirth of the nation of Israel will see all the end of the age prophecies come to pass. They will be executed like birth pangs, slowly at first then increase in frequency an

Mr. Media Returns
2007-06-14 00:24:00
About a week ago I began the media blitz for Axiom-man: Doorway of Darkness and Axiom-man Episode No. 0: First Night Out.Pre-ordering went live on the eighth of June and notification went out to approximately 22,000 people. Likewise, last night I began my “in the flesh” media solicitations for radio and TV appearances. Newspaper stuff is still on the agenda. The marketing of a book is one of my favorite parts of producing one. Yes, it’s a lot of hard work and takes a lot of time, but the rewards can be worth it. (Especially if you self-publish as your per unit profit is so much higher than your average royalty, which is only around $1 a copy.)Right now, marketing these latest Axiom-man adventures takes me back to last summer when I began pushing the first title in the series. Interestingly, it was during the media hype of the first title that I began working on book two, my muse pumping, I myself all jazzed up about Axiom-man and his world. I expect nothing less this time around a

Keeping up Variety
2007-06-26 00:38:00
Before when I talked about reading, I mentioned how important it was to read books and stories outside of whatever genre you happen to be working in.Putting my money where my mouth is, I took it a step further and began reading a different kind of book: manga comics. And I gotta tell ya, I haven’t had such a fresh reading experience like this since checking out the small press for the first time way back when. For those who don’t know, manga is the Japanese version of the Western comic book...except better. Though they’re published serially over in Japan, over here in the west they typically come in digest-sized books, about 200 pages in length, and are read “backwards” instead of forwards, to remain consistent with what the Japanese creators originally intended with their work. Western manga publishers publish books as they are and replace the Japanese words with English. You start reading at the back cover, from top right to bottom left. Even the speech bubbles have to be re

Bye-bye Dollar, Hello Amero
2007-06-30 02:20:00
I was out the other night with a friend and I told him that Canada was getting a new currency called the Amero . He couldn’t believe it. And you know what? Many throughout North America can’t either because we’ve been told so little about it. I suspect the implementation of the Amero will be much like the implementation of the Euro: all quiet and discreet and then, over night, BANG! Surprise everyone! Guess what? You have a new currency and you have to use it.When will we here in the West receive our new currency? I’ve heard sometime in 2009.And not only will we be getting a new currency, we’ll also be part of the North American Union (Canada, US and Mexico).A great website to go to that goes into detail about the Amero and the NAU is http://www.amerocurrency.com/ (to go into all the tiny “hows” and “whys” will take up more room than what this blog is meant for).Regardless, the above news of the merging of Canada, the US and Mexico into a “union” and the merging of

End Times Prophecy Sermon: Part One
2007-07-09 22:04:00
As you can no doubt tell, I'm a Bible prophecy nut. I've been writing a series of prophecy sermons to be preached at my church here in Winnipeg (Community Christian Church). Here is part one of the four-part series:Please turn to Acts 1: 6-10We read:6So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heave

End Times Prophecy Sermon: Part Two
2007-07-16 22:12:00
Below is part two in the four-parter I'm doing for my church. Scroll down to below this entry for part one (or click here).Thanks.Let’s open up our Bibles and turn to 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17.It says:“15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”Let’s also go to 1 Corinthians 15:51-53“51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we wi

End Times Prophecy Sermon: Part Three
2007-07-23 23:53:00
Here is part three of the four-part end times prophecy sermon I wrote my church.God bless. The Lord is coming soon.God is in ControlThe second coming of Jesus Christ isn’t an event that will happen “whenever.” Nor will it be the product of chance or fluke, nor will it simply just “come out of the blue.” The second coming of God’s Son is a pre-planned event by God Himself.God is in control.Jesus said, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36)Right there we see that God has a date set for His Son to return to the earth. God also has a series of dates set when individual prophecies will be fulfilled. We are on His clock and on His time. These things will all come to pass when He says so.But does that mean that, when Jesus was on Earth and He didn’t know the day or hour of His return, that this event will happen “whenever”?The answer is no.The Bible contains a calendar that outlines the whol

End Times Prophecy Sermon: Part Four
2007-07-30 00:17:00
This is the last installment of the four-part prophecy sermon series I wrote for my church. It's basically a play-by-play on God's judgment on an unrepentent Earth and the Second Coming of Christ. For you prophecy buffs reading this, you'll notice I left certain parts out (i.e. the two witnesses, the 144,000 Jewish evangelists, etc.). This was done in the interest of keeping the sermon within its 25-or-so-minute allotted timeframe.I hope those who have been following this series have enjoyed it so far. May the Lord use what is read here as practical application for your life, and may you be reminded daily that His coming is soon so you can be encouraged in your walk with Him, and to strive all the harder for holier living so you are not caught ashamed at His coming. Here it is:The Wrath of God and the Coming of JesusLadies and gentlemen,God Almighty is a God of mercy and a God of love. This we know. After all, the most famous of all Bible verses says, “For God so loved the world tha

A.P. FUCHS and MIKE PHILBIN - A CONVERSATION - two unique writers’ lively and often conflicting views of the small press
2007-09-01 03:59:00
A few weeks ago, A.P. Fuchs and Mike Philbin (a.k.a. Hertzan Chimera) decided to chew the fat on some industry issues that were prevalent to them. Here’s the result:A.P. FUCHS: Seems to me that you’re one of the most peculiar men in this business, based on what I know of you/know of other writers in this industry. I’ve read some of your stuff, so I know as a starting point you know how to write. But what I find interesting is that, depending on who you talk to, you seem to also be one of the most hated men in the business (no offence). I assume Hertzan Chimera, your pseudonym, is largely to blame for that. However, being a “hated man” and/or “outsider” brings up an interesting spring board for our discussion, and that is, since you’re an outsider (and I consider myself one, too, since I’m primarily a self-publisher save for a sale here or there), do you think your view of the business differs from those who traditionally publish? And, if it does, does that difference

It’s Review Time!
2007-09-13 23:08:00
To further expand the types of writing I do, I’ve lately begun doing movie reviews, with plans to review books shortly as well. I’ve done a few reviews in the past, nothing huge, just some stuff on Amazon.com, and haven’t done any in years up until recently. This past week I did six reviews so far, all of which are on the various Batman movies and are now posted on Amazon (Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Batman vs Dracula and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker).I’ve even started a new blog where I plan to list what I’ve just watched or read and what I thought of it.You can read the reviews here:http://flicksandlitpicks.blogspot.comThanks.
