Blogging and Homeschooling: interesting links
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Some links for your perusal: Carnival: First off, I almost forgot to mention the current Carnival of Education. This is an excellent assortment of articles from across the "edusphere." Blog fun: For those with Firefox, you might notice that when you visit Principled Discovery, I now have a little icon which pops up in your search bar. Isn't that cool? I just needed to make sure that

The Bully and the State
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Classroom bullying seems to be getting a lot of press these days. In fact, in the UK it is one of the frequently cited reasons for a family to choose to homeschool. Just how prevalent is bullying here in the US? Some statistics: 1 out of 5 kids admits to being a bully, or doing some "bullying."8% of students miss 1 day of class per month for fear of bullies.282,000 students are physically

If you want your child socialized...a public school satire
1970-01-01 00:59:59
If you want your child socialized, you will have to send him to school. While he is getting ready, you'll have to pack his lunch. When he gets to school, the children will probably stare at him because he isn't wearing the same brand of jeans. Math will probably be review for him, so he'll know all the answers. The children will call him "calculator" and the teacher will give him extra

Carnvial Announcements
1970-01-01 00:59:59
For some reason, I didn't get to submitting to my two favorite carnivals this week, but I'll still promote them. With the birth of Beverly's grandson, she has chosen to organize this week's Carnival of Homeschooling theme around new life. At least stop by to have a peek at her adorable new grandson. My new life is growing fine, but exhausting mama. April 19 is fast approaching and I can't

Working for educational freedom in Germany
1970-01-01 00:59:59
For anyone who is following the situation with the homeschooled girl in Germany who was taken into custody and put into a mental institution, here is an excellent article put out by Netzwerk-Bildungsfreiheit, a German homeschool advocacy group. I have been impressed with the activities of this organization, from the little contact I have had with them (including someone who sits on the board of

The government we deserve
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In the first leaflet written and distributed by the Nazi resistance group Die Weisse Rose (the White Rose), Hans Scholl writes, Do not forget that every people deserves that government which it tolerates. For better or for worse, our leadership reflects the values and character of our citizenry. While I am frequently upset with the blatant disregard for our nation's founding principles by our

The weather, a carnival and some geography
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Regarding animals and the weather , I'd have to say Sam Gribley's nuthatch would have been a good forecaster. Here, the score is: goldfinches...1 weatherman...0 The weather report said it was to be sunny and warmer with a fifty percent chance of precipitation. The goldfinches said it was time to eat as much as possible before the weather turned. We ended up with only light flurries, but by

Some thoughts on the Grand Canyon controversy
1970-01-01 00:59:59
From PublishersWeekly: A three-year old controversy over a book espousing a young-earth Creationist view being sold at the Grand Canyon visitors center has resurfaced, with renewed media attention and more they-said, they-said hullabaloo. In spite of the ongoing squabble, a National Park Service spokesman said it's unlikely to review the sale at the Grand Canyon National Park of a popular book

Happy Birthday, Oxford English Dictionary
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In 1857, dismayed at incomplete and deficient status of English dictionaries, the Philological Society of London determined a new dictionary was in order. The first edition was published February 1, 1884. From the Oxford English Dictionary website: The new dictionary was planned as a four-volume, 6,400-page work that would include all English language vocabulary from the Early Middle English

My teenagers' homework ate their free time
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last week, Jay Matthews, in his Extra Credit column for the Washington Post, defended the practice of assigning homework. I'm not against homework (we homeschoolers do a lot of it). And I could go into all of the positive benefits of some time spent each day on homework outside of class. But how much is too much? Is it, as Mr. Matthews asks, when it cuts into TV time? I have not yet read the

The Right to an Education, Part I
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Education, "that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations", is one of the most critical issues in any society. How we raise our children reflects our values and beliefs and affects what our nation will become. It is vital to the

Carnivals, carnivals
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Carnival of Education has returned home to the Education Wonks. It is always a good carnival to read and usually has a few homeschoolers included. There are at least three this week, but I enjoy reading the perspectives of public educators. They have such a tough job and do not always get the respect they deserve. (I only have a problem with the system, as do a lot of public educators.)

Ignorance of the law is no excuse
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Ignorantia juris non excusat is an ancient legal doctrine which holds that a charged person cannot claim ignorance of a law to avoid being held accountable for criminal actions. But increasingly, it seems, our representatives are doing just that. Representative Jackie Wolorski takes the podium before the Indiana Senate to explain to her fellow representatives what they almost unanimously

Does America need a central teacher as well as a central banker?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Speaking before the Senate banking committee, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made a few comments on US education. We need to make sure that the gains and benefits of these powerful growth-producing forces are broadly shared," he said. In particular, "we're probably not doing what we should be doing in terms of ensuring that all children have opportunities to learn math and science and the

Banning IPs
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I recently discovered that Blogger does not have a feature which allows you to easily ban an IP address. As with anything, however, there is usually a way around that. Should you ever have difficulty with a particular visitor and desire to ban an IP, I found this website helpful. Hopefully it works. I'm not about to test it by banning my own IP. The code should work for any host.

Carnival of Homeschooling
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Carnival of Homeschooling is up over at Nerd Mom's. Take some time to check it out...there are a lot of great entries. It was nice to see the Great Backyard Bird Count highlighted. We plan to take some time to look at different environments and what kinds of birds live there. Tentatively, I'm planning on taking them to our own backyard, a forested area and a wetland where there is (

The Carnival of Principled Government
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In celebration of Liberty Day, coming up March 16, 2007, Principled Discovery will be hosting its very own blog carnival: The Carnival of Principled Government . Entries should uphold the founding principles of the United States, either directly or indirectly and may focus on historic or current events, trends or ideas. The specific principles are outlined in the Declaration of Independence,

The Right to an Education, Part II
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Most of the world shares the Roman idea of rights, based on the concept of ius. These are essentially privileges granted by the state. "Right s," as historically conceived by most of the English speaking world has a very different history, drawing more on the Germanic concept of Rechte. In this sense, rights are inherent and unalienable. In "The Essential Rights and Liberties of Protestants" (

Coed Sleepovers?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Over on Blogfabulous, Kim is discussing coed sleepovers. I was pleasantly surprised to see this topic still seems to have a bit of shock value left in it. I first heard of these back in 2003 when a family I was working with asked me what I thought about letting a child attend one. I was in too much shock to speak intelligibly. OK. Maybe that isn't entirely accurate. They were quite the norm

Happy Birthday...to me!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I just now realized it was my birthday. I went all day yesterday not realizing it was the day before my birthday. Now, what shall I do with myself? Two sick children...one whose coughing finally subsided enough for her to fall asleep. The baby who has been half asleep in my lap all day is now soundly asleep in my lap as I type one-handed. And my hubby isn't home. The three year old boy,

Child Safety and the Internet
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Probably one of the most horrifying fears almost every parent shares is the thought that their child may attract the attention of a pedophile. When I first let my daughter start a blog, we instituted a number of guidelines that we thought were reasonable. One thing we did not think of was the innocent sounding title of her blog. One day, I noticed a spike in her traffic. I wasn't concerned at

Updates on the Busekros family
1970-01-01 00:59:59
So as to be able to provide updated information to those interested in the case involving the Busekros family and not overwhelm my blog with entries dealing with this situation, I hereby declare this entry my official update form. I will keep the most recent information on top. I may also include links at the bottom of others discussing the topic as I come across them. Feel free to leave any

Bird rescue
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yesterday, I awoke to find my feeders overwhelmed by sparrows. It is not uncommon for us to have 40 to 50 house sparrows at a time but luckily they mostly prefer eating the cheap seed we throw on the ground for them and the juncos. As I watched the scurrying, hopping and squabbling of this mass of birds, I realized that these weren't house sparrows. We had over 40 American Tree Sparrows under

Snow forces families together
1970-01-01 00:59:59
While the snow here in the Midwest has brought us flocks of migratory birds, the snow on the East Coast has delivered a few unwelcome visitors to families in Prince William County: their own children. Parents are described as "imprisoned" and "frustrated." The children are restless, and getting bored. One reports missing school. After all, she wants to see her friends (not learn, she made

To school or not to school
1970-01-01 00:59:59
While on the subject of snow and snow days... After we got a couple of inches of snow, Lincoln Public School officials made the call not to cancel school. Snow doesn't affect us homeschoolers much, so I didn't give it much thought. Apparently, however, there was quite a public outcry about it. Parents were worried about icy roads and icy winds. They were worried about the safety of their

Pregnancy Update, or prayers answered before requested
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last night, I went to bed a little worried. I hadn't felt the baby move since before noon. But I had been busy throughout the afternoon, and tried to comfort myself with the probability that she had either slept through most of the activity or I had simply failed to notice her little kicks. I finally gave up feeling for her movements around midnight and fell asleep. This morning there was

Preparation for the nanny-state
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I am still not fully convinced this book is for real, but if anything serves to prepare children for government intrusion into their lives, this book seems to fit the bill. A sample page, from littledemocrats.net: Yes, mama squirrel, keep your children safe from those evil elephants. Celebrating what Jeremy Zilber, author of Why Mommy is a Democrat, identifies as the Democratic Party's core
