Be My Guest at PostieCon
2007-03-11 13:55:00
I realize that some of you can't afford the trip to PostieCon and I want as many of you to be able to come as possible. We are already giving away free blogger conference passes to every 50th person who signs up, but this morning it dawned on me that the airfare and hotel could still be to much for some of you. I starting thinking...how can I pay for someone's entire trip to PostieCon? I think I have the answer.Over the next 30 days you have an opportunity to earn a trip to PostieCon. The person who converts the most new Posties off of their affiliate badges (includes review my post and regular affiliate badge) between today and April 12 wins. PayPerPost will pay for your airfare, give you free admission to the conference and pay for your hotel in downtown Orlando. I will even pick you up at the airport personally!I can't wait to see who wins. Good luck to you all.

Travis or another RockStartup film crew member will be accompanying me to the airport to pick up the winner of the PostieCon contest. If you are really camera shy you can request that he doesn't tape it, but I would love to have one of you be part of the show.

Disclose Disclose Disclose!
2007-03-12 23:50:00
Just think of me saying that like Steve Ballmer, only with less hair and more sweat. In all seriousness, I can't say it enough. Posties must disclose. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are clear with your audience and that you disclose you do sponsored posts. If you decide to adopt a disclosure policy you need to make it easy for your readers to locate. If you opt to do in post disclosure don't make your title "PPP : Acme Co Review", be clear and say this post sponsored by Acme in your post. Not all readers will know what PPP is.Advertisers you can play the biggest role in all of this. When creating your opp simply choose to require a disclosure badge. It is free, it provides an additional link back to your site and it also allows you to control how the blogger discloses.Disclosure is better for everyone and it is required by our terms of service. Disclose Disclose Disclose....Disclose Disclose Disclose! Whewww... I think I need to change my shirt.

Maintenane work being rescheduled.
2007-03-14 20:50:00
In our continuing effort to improve the quality of our deployments, the development team and customer service team spotted two issues relating to creating opportunities in the release we were planning. With that in mind, we're rescheduling the rollout. When I have a good idea of the effort involved in fixing these, I'll post another update. So, the site is not going down at 4 now.

Site Maintenance
2007-03-14 19:36:00
We have a release coming up at 4pm to address some minor issues. This means that at 4pm Eastern time, PayPerPost.com will be unavailable for a maximum of 15 minutes. Thanks for your patience and I promise we'll have the site back as much before the 15 minutes is up as we can, without jeopordizing quality. Pete

Technorati Rankings
2007-03-15 23:22:00
Technorati rankings are now in place. Please be aware that your rankings are updated based on a que and may not always be dead on. If your ranking changes in a big way from one day to the next it may not show up for a couple of day in our system. Please don't be alarmed. Advertisers select based on large ranges of numbers such as 50,000 to 100,000, 20,000 to 49,999 etc. If your number is off a little bit that should be expected. If it is off a lot please let us know by opening a ticket and we will look into it.

Increase the Quality of your Blog
2007-03-15 22:06:00
Some took offense to my previous post and took it as a personal attack. It was in no way meant to be personal, rather it was an attempt to educate and better our system. I hope you didn't take any personal offense Bobby, I can tell you take a lot of pride in your blog and are putting forth a big effort. I needed a real life example in order to make my point and I believe that point was made, hopefully that helped many of you and you receive higher ratings in the future.BReilly made a comment that he would like to see a 10 part series on banning and that got me thinking (thank you). What about a series on what makes a good PPP blog/post rather than just focusing on banning. I think that you guys could really benefit from that. My first thought was to pick a few blogs at random but given the previous post it appears people are too sensitive for that. Instead I will open it up to all of you. Who wants to step up and get some constructive feedback?Post your blog address in the comments an

What causes banning
2007-03-15 19:44:00
I came across a blog in our system today that I just have to point out. This blog has met all of the PayPerPost basic requirements. The blog has plenty of posts, original content, clear disclosure, it even has a decent page rank and Alexa score. What it doesn't have is a whole lot of appeal to advertisers and I could see why this blog would be banned. The large ad banners, text prompting people to scroll down and (PPP) in the header are not appealing to advertisers, let alone the button to hide sponsored posts (I would remove this completely). In addition, this blogger is pointing out his posts as a PayPerPost advertisement. I have said this before, any sponsored post should be credited to the advertiser, not to PayPerPost. Advertisers don't like posts that say "a PayPerPost advertisement" instead they prefer posts that say "sponsored by ACME", "brought to you by ACME", or something along those lines. In Post disclosure is great, just give credit where credit is due. The advertiser is

Pricing Changes & Technorati Ranking
2007-03-15 16:33:00
There are some pricing changes going into effect with the next release of the marketplace later today. The most noticeable of these changes has to do with how the minimum offer is calculated. In the past the only things that impacted offer price were Page Rank and Alexa Score and these two options for segmentation didn't effect each other. That means you could select a Page Rank of 3 for $10 and then go ahead and select an Alexa score of 70,000 and the price didn't change. Additionally, you could set the Tack rating at 5 and the price was still $10, even though you had blocked a significant amount of bloggers from taking your Opp.This caused some advertisers to over segment and under price their offering and lead to much lower opportunity fill rates. Advertisers were segmenting just because they could, they didn't necessarily attribute any value to segmentations they were making. They would select the attribute that meant most to them, then dial up the other numbers so long as they

Poppin' Some Bulletz in Ya
2007-03-16 22:20:00
Next up is long time Postie Suni and her BucketoBulletz. Suni has helped countless Posties out on the boards and I would like to do the same for her. Here goes:Bulletz? Not sure how I feel about associating my brand with Bullets. Seems violent. I am not saying this from PPP's perspective, I am saying this from the perspective of a advertiser selling microwaves. Yes, I know that it's not literal. But I will tell you that some advertisers can be turned off just by the title of the blog. This also has a big top header with lots of wasted real estate. It could be easily cleaned up to be made more presentable.Took me a second to figure out that the images next to the categories were buckets (of bullets) and not trash cans. You have some template issues. On bigger monitors the columns don't expand properly. In general this layout isn't as clean or appealing as the other two blogs I have reviewed.Again this what I would consider a "General Lifestyle" blog. You take a lot of liberty with the

RAP SMACKDOWN PPP Style!
2007-03-16 19:16:00
Here it is. The time has come for the Rap Smackdown to continue. For this project, I enlisted fellow Customer Love lady Ashley to make a very special appearance. We wrote the rap and yes, we are to blame for the horrible dancing. Anyway, please watch below...And don't hate. Peace. [It's just been added, 2:20PM EST, so if the video doesn't load, it may still be finalizing within YouTube, give it a bit.]

Whatever Who Feels Like?
2007-03-16 18:38:00
Next up is Amy, a long time Postie and someone who is very active on the boards. Amy writes about Whatever She Feels like. No favoritism when it comes to reviews Amy.... so here we go:The header for this design is pretty big, 300 plus pixels before I get to anything conveying any information. It is artistic and clean, but that sure is a lot of wasted real estate. I have a big screen but I am sure not everyone does. I would tighten up that header. Yes, I realize it is a theme, but I also realize you manage a web department.I am not sure what the giant arrows add in the header. Much like the previous comment this is more a question of design which is highly subjective.Kill the inline Google Ads. Obviously I have a bias here given that I run PPP but I would ask yourself what value you are getting from them. If you are making decent money keep them otherwise why bother.People click through on inline text that is underlined more than text that isn't. From an advertisers point of view this

Review of Azdana.com
2007-03-16 16:08:00
Holy cow you guys left a lot of comments on my post offering a review. This is going to take awhile, but I will start today. First up is AZ Dana:I like the layout, it is crisp and clean. There aren't display ads all over the place. This is refreshing. The Disclosure Policy is very prominent at the top of the page. Good stuff. The blog itself seems to be all over the place in terms of categories which is fine, though it may limit you in terms of the types of opportunities you can take. I would call this blog "General Lifestyle" under the new categories we will be rolling out. It is a little bit about everything. You have Travel as a category in your blog, but I am not sure if you selected it as a category in the PayPerPost system. If I was a Travel advertiser who selected I specifically wanted a travel blog I don't think I would be too happy if you took my Opportunity. Sure, it is one of your categories, but this isn't really a blog specifically about travel. You have sponsored posts in a

'Living Life Online'
2007-03-18 19:13:00
As you might've read here on the blog last week Sherry Heyl is one of the speakers appearing at PostieCon '07. Actually, she's going to be leading a conversational session titled 'Living Life Online.' Sounds like it's going to be pretty interesting, and Sherry's looking to have those in the audience take active participation in the conversation. What a great way to learn!Anyhow, I was visiting Sherry's blog a few days ago and in a post titled 'Living Life Online' on 3/14 she dove a little deeper into this topic, and also mentioned she would be talking about it at PostieCon. Thanks, Sherry! You should visit Sherry's blog if you have some time and give her some love! (Her site actually has some great information about ideas & innovations in social media, I think.) I also added her MySpace profile to our MySpace friend network.

Lower Price Adjustment
2007-03-21 03:02:00
AdvertisersThe introduction of segmentation in our system has been a huge success by all accounts. Last week we added Technorati rankings and our advertisers seem to be loving it. However, we also made some consolidation in the segmentation ranges which caused some lower range rankings to increase in price dramatcially. Many of our advertisers contacted us requesting some pricing adjustments on the lower end of the spectrum and I am happy to say we listened. We believe the new lower price minimums are now more fair and reflective of the market for both advertisers and bloggers. We appreciate the feedback and hope this adjustment works better for you.I am also pleased to announce that I will be leading an interactive session at PostieCon that is specifically geared towards writing Opportunities in our system. A creative Opportunity can be the difference between a post costing you $10 or $20 per post. You could save thousands of dollars per year simply by creating more interesting Opportu

WOMMAs Great Deception
2007-03-20 20:28:00
UPDATE:I want to state that I have not had any interaction with any WOMMA staff members since Andy Sernovitz has departed. Perhaps other staff members may be more helpful in navigating the new frontiers we continue to explore. The post they made was with no attempt to contact us, however I am hopeful that we can open the lines of communication.I have also included the dates from each email so we are all clear as to the timeframe of this interaction.Great Article by Andy Beardhttp://andybeard.eu/2007/03/womma-should-watch-who-they-quote-and-especially-who-they-link-to.html--The Word of Mouth Marketing Association recently made a blog posting regarding PayPerPost that is so off base and conflicted that I simply must call them to the mat. In the post WOMMA criticizes the PayPerPost model and our disclosure practices while praising "respected" bloggers Jason "The Donkinator" Calcanis and Jeff Jarvis (who I actually do respect). Let's get a couple things straight:PayPerPost adheres to the

So it continues! Mr. Fab has set up his response and I've got it here for you!We noticed that Mr. Fab, as fabulous as he is, forgot to call someone out to continue the SmackDown chain! For shame! No worries, though, he has sent us his rap in verse, you can make your own tune to it! You can hardly see it, but Mr. Fab was giving the 'Peace' sign at the end of his rap, which I think makes him real hardcore, you know? Walking into a Pack of Wolves
2007-03-22 02:21:00
Tomorrow I will be a guest on Jason Calacanis' podcast. This is pretty much like walking into a pack of wolves or swimming with sharks with freakin' laser beams. I am sure that Jason will be asking some tough questions, but I am excited about the opportunity to finally have a conversation with the person who has been bashing PayPerPost for quite some time.Unfortunately, Jason declined to allow us to tape the show for RockStartup. There is will be a little delay between the taping tomorrow and the podcast itself. I will embed the video he posts when it is live. This should be interesting to say the least.

Jason Calacanis Interview
2007-03-23 18:37:00
The interview with Jason Calacanis yesterday went better than expected. He asked some tough questions but ultimately I think was reasonable and balanced. In the end I think we both gained some respect for each other and some insight into what drives us.There is a surprise ending to this podcast that is well worth the lengthy (and at times heated) debate. If there was any doubt in your mind about my commitment to the Posties or this company I dare say it should exist no longer. I love our Posties, especially the ones I have met in person. As a primer to the main event here is a video I made the night before.

BlogHer Business Summit in NYC
2007-03-23 15:49:00
Veronique & I are currently in New York City attending the BlogHer Business '07 conference, and it is amazing! While we are certainly familiar with most of the topics being discussed here--things like social media, creating relevant content for your audience, and even SecondLife--it's extremely exciting and motivating to engage with all of these women who are passionate about blogging. In speaking with the attendees those who were not previously familiar with PayPerPost and its business model, most are very receptive and positive about what we're doing. In fact, through this conference we've been able to secure two speakers for PostieCon '07, a few more potential speakers, and many folks who are interested in attending as bloggers. Overall this trip has been very productive so far and we're looking forward to seeing what the rest of our trip brings! Can't get enough of the PayPerPost videos? Don't forget you can subscribe to our videos at YouTube.com/PayPerPost.
