I Should Rename the Golden Donkey Award to the Jason Calacanis Award 2007-03-02 16:43:00 I made a post a few days ago about my GoldenDonkey
award. I mentioned that in the back of my head I have about 20 Golden Donkeys I have given away to people who have attacked PayPerPost unfairly. What I didn't mention is that 15 of the 20 awards go to the biggest Donkey of all, JasonCalacanis
.Time and time again Jason has climbed upon his stacks of money and jumped upon his high horse, declaring PayPerPost and the other companies that have followed our lead "evil". Apparently he can't find anything better to talk about on his blog or in his keynote speeches. He sounds more like a doomsday preacher than an entrepreneur.Just because it scares Jason and Jason doesn't understand why PayPerPost works doesn't mean it is evil. Paid search scared people too. They called it evil, they said it would ruin the Internet. Last time I checked Google and Overture are doing ok. If those entrepreneurs would have listened to naysayers like Jason that multi-billion dollar industry wouldn't exist.C Read more:Rename

Advertisers! What are your thoughts on Categories? 2007-03-02 15:39:00 Dear PPP Advertisers,As you create new opportunities now, you will notice you have many more options when it comes to targeting or segmenting the appropriate audience. Selecting Tack, PR and Alexa ratings . . . . oh, and categories. While some of you may already be familiar with categories, we wanted to share some overall tips for you to help even further. Please let us know your thoughts
as well.First, we want to differentiate between targeting or segmenting, and being too limiting. It's to your benefit most certainly to target an audience that would find more interest and need in your site or product. However, if you are too limiting, you may be missing out on some great potential! We nearly always suggest an advertiser choose at least five categories. Most of the opportunities we see during review can really apply to many folks (and way more than 5 categories), and there are very few that have such a thinly defined niche to warrant only 1-2 categories. Have you considered th Read more:Categories

Today's Release 2007-03-05 23:21:00 Another Monday, another release. Today
's release was really to fix some annoying issues out there, so let's dive straight in. The Flagging SystemWe've updated the flagging system. Previously when you flagged someone or something, an email got generated behind the scenes which then got fired off to customer support. Well, Customer Support now have a whizzy new support ticket system built right into PayPerPost.com and we decided it made sense to integrate flagging with that. What does this mean for you? Well, now your flags and questionable content queries will get queued up in the ticketing system and not accidentally overlooked in someone's mailbox. DatesTed had been complaining for a while that he was having problems with his dates. No that kind of date silly; the January, February, March kind. What was happening, and this was most visible on the blog of the day feature, is that a bijou bugette within Ruby on Rails was inappropriately calculating the previous month as 30 days ago. New Years Resolution Check In 2007-03-05 14:44:00 My goal is to have my new years resolutions actually stick this year so every few months I am going to do a check-in with myself to keep me honest. Here is what I wrote for my goals in my January post:1. Drop to a size 34 waist by June and keep it off. In the past year I have chunked out and there is simply no excuse. Too much work, too little time, too much travel. Crap, crap, crap. Dr. Chunky Butt will be no more.2. Give more to charity. I have been a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity though MindComet, and PayPerPost has some charitable components but I know I can do more. I will find a way to make a bigger difference in 2007.3. Kick Caffeine. Caffeine is the devil. Coffee and soda are no good for you. I kicked it once for nearly 2 years in 2003 (yes, it was a resolution) and I never felt better. Water and juice from here on out.And my update:1. I have been working out at least 3 times a week for the past 2 months. I have run almost 80 miles since my first run including two Read more:Years

Shaving my head for children's cancer. 2007-03-07 18:01:00 So a friend of mine sends me this link the other day about the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Basically these guys organize head shaving events for children's cancer. He decided to participate. That got me thinking. Most of the other guys on the dev team are sporting shaved heads, why don't I take a dive at the Uncle Fester look for a good cause! Also since I'm the second furriest guy on the dev team (Pete is still number 1) it could be interesting. So I'm going to do it. The goal is set to $1000 to shave my head and all of it goes to cancer research. As I'm getting ready to make this post, I run it past Ted and he's like "I'll do it too!" Pretty soon all kinds of people in the office are volunteering!(I love working here). So now we are a team of 6, Ted, Travis, Daniel, Luke, Mike, and myself. The best part is, you get to choose who gets scalped. Whoever hits their goals will have their head shaved LIVE at Posticon. And whoever donates the most gets to do the shaving!!! Take a loo Read more:Shaving

More on Categories 2007-03-08 15:02:00 I am LOVING all the comments on the previous post. There is some great feedback in the previous post. I want you all to understand our approach to defining the number of categories we came up with. One one hand we have Colleen who is saying she wants to see more granularity and on the other we have Suni who says the categories should be combined. The answer is somewhere in between and I want to explain why:Colleen's Micro Category ScenarioLet's say that I am a manufacturer of knitting supplies. As an advertiser I want to be able to target my audience as accurately as possible, so I choose category of knitting out of about 200 other options. I sell knitting supplies and these people blog is about knitting, so it seems perfectm. I select that category, select 3 tacks, select a PR of 2 and start my campaign. I want to reach a big audience so I choose to do 500 posts.A Few Problems With Micro Categories
There aren't anywhere near 500 blogs in PayPerPost about knitting and even if there
