The value of a personal mission statement
2008-03-09 23:51:41
I don’t know about you, but in my own professional life I often get so bogged down with the details of my daily work that I forget – or I ‘don’t have time’ – to sit back and widen my vision, to fly up and take a bird’s eye view of the whole landscape. Being in the thick of it all, I sometimes (often!) don’t see the wood for the trees. In fact, the very idea of ‘sitting back’ and looking at the bigger picture somehow seems like laziness – shouldn’t I be working, doing something, being productive, not just floating around watching while everyone else gets on with things?I am going to suggest that this attitude is quite wrong and that we should, in fact, be habitually taking the bigger view, surveying the entire terrain of our lives and our world. If we don’t do this

Can the law of attraction work for YOU?
2008-03-08 08:13:08
According to the many exponents of the ‘law of attraction,’ when we really want something and when our desires, thoughts and actions are in alignment, the thing we want will manifest. But is it really that simple? If so, then why are there examples of passionate, hardworking, dedicated people who don’t get what they really, really want. What about the candidates in the run up to the US presidential election this year? Presumably they all really, really want to be president, they are all passionate about this and they are all working hard to achieve it – isn’t everything in alignment? But only one of them can be the winner. Does all this ‘law of attraction’ stuff really work?First, it’s important to realize that the ‘Law of Attraction’ isn’t just wishful thinking – i

Advice for Novice Investors
2008-03-06 17:06:55
Are you new to all this investing stuff? Just trying to learn what it's all about. Here are a few pointers. Don't take them too seriously, they're just bits and bobs I've picked up over the years, though (of course) I think it's pretty valuable stuff!1. Don't visit financial advisers. No less a man than Peter Lynch starts his wonderful book 'One up on Wall Street' with 'Rule number one is: Stop listening to professionals!' They have no better chance that beating the market than any other thoughtful person, AND they are usually trying to sell you something on which they earn commission. Their mediocre advice plus their (often inflated) fees adds up to a mediocre investment, at best. I have NEVER bought a good investment from an adviser. As Lynch points out, you SHOULD take advice from a doc

Dividend Stocks - the best passive income stream?
2008-03-06 17:04:29
There are two kinds of income: active and passive. Active income streams are what you get in exchange for effort - your day job is the best example: you put in the hours, you get paid. Passive income streams are like getting interest from a bank account - you do absolutely nothing and the money rolls in. In between are things like maintaining a Website: it (potentially) generates money for you all the time, even as you sleep, but it does need to be monitored, updated and maintained, and so there is work involved. You might love your job and love the work of running a business, maintaining a Website or whatever, and this is desirable because for most people their active income makes up the lion's share of all their disposable cash. But what we are thinking about here is the ideal passive inc

About Me and Why I'm Writing This Blog

Making Money: Ten points
2008-03-05 07:11:37
The first point: passive income is better than working for moneyTalking about income, the bottom line is this: the best income is a passive income. No doubt about it. Interest, dividends, royalties, money from web-based schemes, lottery winnings, being left money by your long lost great aunt who just died. All far better than actually working. When you work as an employee, you swap your time for money. This is OK if you have an employer who compensates you very well for your time or if you don’t really want a lot of money. But I don’t think many of us fall into these categories. So the only really sensible way to go is to generate passive income. It takes work up fron, of course, but when the work is done, the money keeps on coming and coming and coming … Which lads us nicely onto

Isn't making no effort a BAD thing?
2008-03-04 00:51:57
You've always been told that making no effort is bad, right? Perhaps at school you got a grade for 'effort' and were berated by teachers and parents for being lazy. You'll never make anything of yourself if you don't put in more effort. There's no such thing as a free lunch. We've all heard things like this a million times. But we should distinguish between effortlessness and doing nothing or being lazy. If you don't exercise because you can't be bothered, or if you eat junk food because it's to much effort to cook something healthy, or if you don't revise for your exam because it's too much trouble, then of course you're heading for an impoverished life. But there is a certain way of doing things - or rather a certain way of getting things done - by which an excellent result is achieved with

The common thread
2008-03-04 00:51:40
I have read all sorts of books on spirituality over the years: The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle, Awareness by Anthony de Mello, How to Know God and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra, The Wisdom of Insecurity by Allan W Watts, The Tao of Pooh by Benjemin Hoff, The Art of Living by Osho and Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch, to name but a few. I’ve also read books on Buddhism and Hinduism, I’ve read the Baghvad Gita and the Tao Te Ching and I’m quite familiar with the Bible. All these books seem to be saying the same kind of things. Different metaphors and different styles, but they all contain a few basic ways of seeing the truth, waking up, becoming enlightened, whatever. One is awareness of the present moment. Meditation is a way of focusing on t

You need to feel wealthy to attract wealth
2008-03-04 00:50:59
In the course of my regular reading of other blogs, I came across an interesting idea from Creation Thoughts called the “Prosperity Seed Game.” The point of the game is to try to get you feeling wealthy, given that one of the basic principles in the law of attraction is that you need to feel something before it will actually turn up in your life.In the game, you take some money (large denominations if you can) and plant the bills in various places so that you will 'find' them at a later date, having forgotten about them. For example, you can put a $10 in the pocket of a jacket you don't wear very often or use a bill as a bookmark in a book you refer to regularly but not too often. When you find the money, you'll naturally feel excited and happy, and you can keep 'planting' more money t

The power of thinking big
2008-03-04 00:49:53
One of the hallmarks of a successful mindset is 'thinking big.' But so few people have this trait. We've been conditioned to think small, not to be greedy, to expect less from life - in short, we've been swamped with a puritanical way of thinking since the day we were born.I read somewhere that, as an experiment, someone put two adverts in a newspaper. They were for the same job, doing the same work with the same hours, but one of them offered to pay a salary many times the other. Guess what? About ten times more people applied for the lower paid job! People think small. And that's one of the reasons they fail. Many (most?) people are afraid of thinking big, they're scared to be successful, scared to be rich. For most people, being rich is a nice dream, but they're comfortable with the drea

Eight traits of successful people
2008-03-04 00:49:37
Paul Raymond, entrepreneur, property mogul and lifetime purveyor of pornography, died yesterday at the age of 82. The rights and wrongs of the pornography industry are one thing (which I have no intention of debating) but it has to be said that Raymond’s life is an example of how certain traits, certain ways of thinking about and doing things lead to success.I am not putting Paul Raymond on a pedestal nor suggesting that we should emulate him in every respect. Indeed, Raymond was not universally successful – though he became very rich and successful in his field, his private life was a bit of a mess and from what I’ve read, he did appear to be very happy, living for many years as a recluse. This just goes to underline the fact that money does not lead to happiness – these things ar

The Power of Now
2008-03-04 00:03:43
It's been a long time since I read Eckhardt Tolle's book, The Power of Now. I've read it several time since I fist found it and I always love reading it again. Tolle's message is very simple and it's a message that's repeated again and again in the work of those who write about the law of attraction. He is saying that 'the now' is all that exists and so we should fully embrace it, immerse ourselves in it and accept it totally.Like so many things, there seems to be a paradox here: how can we be satisfied with the here and now and also be driven to change the future? One of the foundations of the LOA is that you need to feel something before it will manifest. Hence, the importance of feeling good here and now cannot be overstated. In Ask and it is Given, Abraham Hicks says ' when you understa

Intention and desire
2008-03-04 00:01:05
In The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra writes about 'The law of intention and desire.' In what he calls the field of pure potentiality, we can introduce an intention and so 'put the cosmic computer with its infinite organizing power to work for you.' Intention , he goes on to say, 'lays the groundwork for the effortless, spontaneous, frictionless flow of pure potentiality seeking expression from the unmanifest to the manifest' (p.72).But what is this thing called intention? Deepak defines intention as 'desire combined with detachment.' To quote: 'The future is something you can always create through detached intention, but you shuld never struggle against the present' (p.73).So many people do exactly this - struggle against the present. The present is what it is, and one must

effortlessequiring or apparently requiring no effort; "the swallows glided in an effortless way through the busy air"not showing effort or strain; "a difficult feat performed with casual mastery"; "careless grace"abundancean extremely plentiful or over sufficient quantity or supply: an abundance of grain.overflowing fullness: abundance of the heart.affluence; wealth: the enjoyment of abundance. It is my belief that life, in all its aspects - health, money, success, happiness - is by its very nature abundant, and that because abundance is the nature of life, that it necessarily involves no effort. To strain to achieve that which is inherent in our nature is a sign of a deep rooted problem.Through this blog, I will explore some ways of seeing, perhaps for the first time, what has always been

Is greed good?
2008-02-29 22:09:36
I've just been reading a book by a guy called Bruce Sullivan. The book is called 'Hanna's Christmas Gift' and it's about how to live a better, happier and more peaceful kind of life. The aim of the book is excellent, and much of the content is also very worthwhile, but I feel that some of it really misses the mark.He basically advocates five premises:1. Free your heart form hatred2. Free your mind from worries3. Live simply4. Give more5. Expect lessI have absolutely no problem with 1-4. These are great aims, things we should all be striving towards. But it's a shame that Mr Sullivan has included 'expect less' in his (to quote) 'amazing principles.' Although he does say here and there that possessions and wealth are not bad in themselves, the overwhelming tone of the book is that these thin

The Science of Blue Feathers
2008-03-13 07:43:50
There are plenty of people who have become very much attached to the ‘law of attraction’ in one way or another, carving out their position, either ‘for’ or (less understandably) ‘against.’ Some of the articles I have read recently are almost evangelical in their fervor – it’s as if the authors are trying to convince the readers that they are right, one way or the other. This says something very interesting about human nature, I suppose – we obviously feel the need to align ourselves with some position or other, to be identified as a follower of this or a proponent of that or a arch-skeptic of the other. I guess we need to ‘belong’ to something, and this also explains, perhaps, the success of social networking on the Internet, where ‘birds of a feather stick together

Achieving your goals
2008-03-17 05:13:42
Did you make any new years' resolutions in January? How many of them are you still on track with?We all have goals. And we all set them for ourselves all the time. But usually we don't know it - we're not being very conscious. In this article I want to discuss a few ideas which may help you to set goals more consciously and also introduce a practical way to actually get them achieved.Create specific goalsI don’t think I’ve ever read a self-improvement book or anything on the law of attraction that didn’t emphasize in some way the importance of goal setting. Actually, we all set goals all the time, it’s just that usually we do it unconsciously, and most of the goals people set are pretty odd. ‘I’m going to be exhausted by the end of the week. This meeting is going to be boring,

Double your income doing what you love - book review
2008-03-23 05:12:54
I have just finished reading 'Double your income doing what you love' by Raymond Aaron. A provocative title, to be sure! Aaron’s book is a set of instructions for achieving goals using principles in tune with the much talked about ‘law of attraction’. Like most books in this area, this one is a mixture of good and not so good, but there are some real gems here. The following is a distillation of the important points as I saw them. Set goals and record them. By setting goals you are already ahead of the game. Most people don’t know where they’re heading and so they can’t get there. Writing goals is a powerful signal to yourself that you intend to achieve them. The feelings invoked by this process call into motion the law of attraction, which starts to

Do you want to be rich? Just say yes!
2008-03-27 08:28:07
Money isn’t real. If you were on a desert island with a suitcase full of money – I mean millions and millions of dollars – and nothing else, you’d probably starve to death. Your only chance would be to learn, and learn fast, how to keep warm (possibly by burning the money, though that wouldn’t last very long), how to catch your dinner, what kinds of plants you can and can’t eat, how to build a shelter, how to treat your inevitable injuries, and so on and so on. You money wouldn’t help you. You might survive, but I doubt it.The only reason it helps you in your non-desert-island-life is because we live in a big community where everyone has different skills and we trade those skills (sometimes in very indirect and convoluted ways) with the brilliant concept of money. And that’s

Easy Money
2008-04-03 23:33:14
I know what we've all been told - If you want to get rich, you’ve got to work hard! But don’t you know people who’ve worked hard all their lives and are still really poor? I’m sure we all know a lot of people like this – maybe you’re one of them. I call them the hard working poor.Does that mean that getting rich doesn’t depend on how hard you work? Well, my answer to that is – yes and no. You see, it all depends on what you mean by ‘work.’This blog is called Effortless Wealth. But you see, Effortlessness is not laziness; it is not inertia; it is not sitting back and doing nothing and expecting all good things to come your way. No, you’ve got to do something. Maybe you’ve got to do a lot. Maybe you’ve got to get up early, keep going all day long and get to bed tired

Money grows on trees
2008-04-06 02:11:22
Abundance is our natural state of beingAbundance is not a struggle. You don’t have to fight to be rich, to be happy, to be successful, to have great relationships… It’s not as if there’s a limited resource and we all have to fight to get our piece of it. There’s abundance for everyone, and there always has been. Money really does grow on trees. We live in the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. But some of us are starving to death because we can’t see what’s in front of our eyes. Here’s a story which I recall reading in Eckhart Tolle’s book The Power of Now.There’s a beggar sitting on an old wooden box, and he’s been sitting there for years – he sits on it on the street and begs for money. One day someone walks past and tells the old beggar that he has

The law of attraction is a lie!
2008-04-12 00:54:30
As I mentioned in another article, the ‘law of attraction’ seems to have grown into something of a cult, with people wanting to identify themselves as ‘believers’ of ‘non-believers.’ Some people have taken this quite far and are defending their position, one way or the other, quite vociferously. There has recently been quite a backlash to the ‘law of attraction,’ in the form of websites, e-books and blogs propagating an idea called the ‘lie of attraction.’ For example, people like Sam Crowley and Michael Cheney have some significant objections to the law of attraction as it is popularly presented. People are becoming very emotional about it all. An anonymous writer on one blog, for example, writes ‘The law of attraction is BS…Though the basic idea for the law of attr

The Strangest Secret
2008-04-14 08:49:12
This post is inspired by Earl Nightingale’s wonderful broadcast, The Strangest Secret,’ in which Earl describes ‘the secret’ in a full and satisfying way. ‘The Secret’ movie, for all its expensive effects and advertising, missing the mark when compared to the depth of Earl Nightingale. I suggest you listen to it often. The Problem We live in a golden age, an age people have dreamed about throughout history. We have warmth and light at the touch of a button, we can travel around the globe in a matter of hours, we can speak to anyone on earth as if they were in the same room. There is abundant opportunity for everyone. And yet, despite all this abundance, 100 people, all starting at age 25, all wanting to succeed, will mostly be broke or still working at the age of 65. Only 5 w

How to succeed at anything
2008-04-17 07:31:04
Success is very simple. But it is not very easy for most people. In fact, success boils down to two simple steps.1. Set goals – have an intention to do, have or be something2. Keep acting in a way which is consistent with your goalsJust doing these two things will almost certainly make you a success. The trouble is that most people don’t do either of them. Most people drift along aimlessly, not really knowing where they are going and having no clear vision of the future. If you ask most people why the get out of bed in the morning, why they work, what is the purpose of their life, they won’t be able to tell you. The few people who actually set goals are way ahead of the crowd. And those who take the second step, and keep acting to support their goals make up the tiny minority o
