NOTE TO RAYS: HARDBALL GOES BOTH WAYS! 2008-03-08 20:13:00 In the 9th inning of a meaningless game Elliot Johnson of the Rays dropped a shoulder to Yank catcher Francisco Cervelli on a play at the plate. Cervelli has a fractured wrist. (See video at end of story)What a scumbag. To make matters worse, this is not the 1st time this spring the Rays have had an unnecessary collision at the plate. On Wednesday, Carl Crawford plowed over Houston catcher Humberto Quintero.Joe Girardi: “I think it’s uncalled for in spring training. You get people hurt and that’s what we got, we got Cervelli hurt. I’ve always known that you don’t do it. I know kids play aggressive and play hard. That’s how you want them to play. But maybe if it happens too much you should mention something. It’s one thing to get hit by a pitch that gets away or twist an ankle
WHAT'S WITH WANG? 2008-03-07 08:14:00 I understand that it's only spring training, but he's been throwing for almost 4 weeks.“His sinker was up, his slider was flat,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “He was in bad counts."Note to Joe: he was in bad counts because “His sinker was up, his slider was flat.”!He should have had better command of his pitches by now.Pitching coach Dave Eiland says: “It’s early, so he’s feeling strong. He was just under some pitches, so they were staying up and he wasn’t getting that late movement on his sinker."Why not Dave? It's not "early" for pitchers. They started Feb. 14 and there is 3 weeks left until opening day. Not a lot of time for starters. Thats why they report earlier.Eiland again: "He did throw some good changeups."How many did he throw in 2/3 of an inning!? And why so many
MURCER: NO CANCER!! 2008-03-05 12:24:00 Bobby Murcer released a statement this morning saying that the area of concern is scar tissue and NOT cancer. He says he will be getting ready for opening day at the stadium.Thank God and God bless Bobby Murcer...what an inspiration!

WAX ON THE TAKE FROM MITCH, BUD & MLB 2008-02-18 10:37:00 Boy, that Henry Waxman, he was really tough on ol' Rocket. What could possibly motivate the Democrat from California to be so concerned over the steroid/HGH issue? It must be "the children".Waxman, and other congressional blow-hards on the committee, are concerned that our children might follow the lead of their sports idols.OR...could it be these other factors?Waxman has received over $10,000, since 2000, in campaign contributions from George Mitchell, Mitchell's law firm (Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand) and executives at baseball partner FOX Sports.A political action committee operated by the MLB commissioner’s (Bud Selig) office has given cogressional Democrats more than $300,000 since 2002. (Ummm...thats your ticket, cable and caps/shirts money, folks)Selig's PAC has
CASHMAN: "WE ARE HIGH" 2008-02-16 23:29:00 No, this is not another drug story or how much the Yankees are enjoying spring camp.Cash was talking payroll with ESPN 1050 New York's Andrew Marchand. "We are high. If I could get our payroll lower I would. It is not going to happen -- not this year. But we have, at the end of the year, a lot of numbers coming off. The combination of building our farm system and getting our salary lines back to where they probably need to be. That's a process, too, and that takes some time. I'm not particularly proud that we have the highest payroll in the game."NYYU Reporter George Seeber
CASHMAN: IGAWA IS O-KEI 2008-02-16 22:59:00 After closely watching Kei Igawa's 30-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Joe Girardi, Brian Cashman and Dave Eiland met for 30 minutes with the former Japanese Central League all-star.NYYU Reporter Nikki Rivers"It's such a huge adjustment to try to come over to this country and, you know, just change everything that you do," Girardi said. "I mean, you're talking about day is night, night is day, food is different, travel is different."
FARNSWORTH: UNEFFECTED BY INFECTION 2008-02-16 19:38:00 Kyle Farnsworth told MLB.com on Saturday that he was immobilized for three weeks with a staph infection in his right leg that required hospitalization."It was my push-off leg, so I was concerned," Farnsworth continued. "I looked down and it was red all the way from my thigh to my kneecap. It was pretty scary."NYYU reporter Nikki Rivers

RIVERA: TOP CHRISTIAN 2008-02-03 15:14:00 The christian website beliefnet.com has named Mariano Rivera as one of the "Top 12 Evangelical Christians in Sports Today."Quoting the website:"The popular Panamanian relief pitcher for the New York Yankees has helped the team win four World Series titles throughout his career. The devoutly Christian Rivera--who is often seen reading the Bible before and after games--finds inspiration in the verse Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." He even has it inscribed on his pitching glove. He is deeply involved in philanthropy and financed the building of a school and church in Panama City. Rivera has also gone public with his intention of becoming an evangelical minister at the end of his baseball career and is devoted to a variety of charities that focus on ch

ZIMMER: JOE IS WRONG 2008-03-09 22:00:00 .The man who says that Joe Girardi is "like a son to me", thinks that Joe G. is wrong for complaining about Elliot Johnson plowing over Francisco Cervelli, breaking is right wrist.Ex-Yank bench coach Don Zimmer says: "I can't believe that he went after it the way he did. That's not Joe Girardi. Girardi was a catcher in the big leagues and should know better. You block the plate. If I slide into him and break a leg, nothing is said. Instead of breaking my leg I bowl him over and it's not the right play? Well, to me it's the right play, spring training or no spring training. Play the game the right way. To me, our kid played it the way he thought it was right, and I think it was right."Dirtbag Rays manager Joe Maddon added: "Just like I said Saturday, it was a good, hard baseball play. We ha
GOMES LIKES IT FROM BEHIND! 2008-03-14 21:51:00 Thanks to some great photos by Al Messerschmidt of Getty Images, we get to clearly see how Jonny Gomes assaulted Shelley Duncan from behind.Obviously Boob Watson didn't notice this when he handed out the suspensions. This attack from behind is almost as cowardly as a catcher in full gear attacking a batter wearing only a batting helmet.
IT'S A CONSPIRACY, I TELL YA! 2008-03-14 19:18:00 Nobody loves a good conspiracy theory more than me, so here it goes.THE FACTS:March 8th: Rays' Elliot Johnson plows over Yank catcher Francisco Cervelli breaking his wrist. Girardi is angry, saying the collision could have been avoided. Gutless worm Ray's manager Maddon will not talk to NY press after the game.March 9th: War of words in the media begins in the papers starting with Buddha Zimmer saying that Girardi shouldn't be angry, "he should know better." When asked if there would be retribution when the teams play on Wednesday, Shelley Duncan says "thats a decision I'll make between third and home."March 11: Yanks announce that Andy Pettitte will not start Wednesday vs the Rays due to "tendinitis" in his elbow. Someone by the name of Heath Phillips will get the start.March 12: Phillips
