GOOSE: KEEP JOBA IN THE PEN
2008-03-13 21:22:00
The newest Hall of Famer Goose Gossage believes that Joba Chamberlain belongs in the bull pen."He's invaluable as a reliever. His arrival last summer was the only reason they made the playoffs. Getting the ball to Mariano was their Achilles' heel, until Joba came up and filled the bill. There's nothing more exciting in this game than coming in with men on base, late in a tight game."Chamberlain continues to take the diplomatic route on his situation by saying "It doesn't matter to me."

REGGIE JAX FINED AND SUSPENDED
2008-03-16 04:36:00
Yet another attack on the Yankees from the office of Boob Watson. From the NY Daily News:Reggie Jackson was penalized by Major League Baseball in the aftermath of Wednesday's bench-clearing incident with the Rays, according to Yanks GM Brian Cashman. Jackson got a letter of discipline from MLB banning him from being in uniform for games for the rest of spring training and also fining him $250. "Apparently, he went out in the melee," Cashman said. Jackson's name was not mentioned in MLB's press release Friday announcing the suspensions for Shelley Duncan, Melky Cabrera and Tampa Bay's Jonny Gomes.OK Boob, let me give you some inside info. The incident was classified as a "bench clearing brawl". For those of us familiar with baseball, that means that all the players and coaches from both tea

POLL: YANKS AND JETER NY'S FAVORITES
2008-03-19 12:55:00
A Siena Research Institute poll of New York residents by telephone, reported that the Yankees are New York's favorite sports team with 27 percent of the vote, followed by the Mets (12 percent) and Super Bowl champion Giants (9 percent).Click pie for larger imageThe Mets trail the Yanks in not only devoted fans but also in overall favorability with a 57% positive rating but the Mets do have a lower negative rating, 13%, as compared with the 16% unfavorable scored by the Yanks. Yankee fans see the Mets more positively at 56% than the Mets fans feel towards the Yanks.Derek Jeter is seen favorably by 67% of all New Yorkers and 88% of Yankee fans. He even manages a net positive rating from Red Sox fans (44%).Alex Rodriguez gets a positive rating of 52% statewide, 72% with Yankee fans.Andy Pe

TINO TO STAY WITH YANKS
2008-03-21 23:57:00
Tino Martinez will remain with the Yankees organization after his tenure as a spring training instructor ends in less than 2 weeks.Martinez will be a "special assistant" to Brian Cashman. Cash plans to send Martinez to visit the minor-league affiliates at least once each, during the regular season. This spring Tino has worked exclusively with Shelly Duncan at 1b and now thinks he's like to eventually coach with the big club."Now that I've gotten involved in it, I've enjoyed it so much that I definitely want to continue."

BETEMIT TO ENZ: YOU CAN '86' 14!
2008-03-22 17:40:00
Morgan Ensberg has worn #14 for most of his baseball life. Ensberg’s No. 14 was retired at Redondo Beach High School in California this year.Ensberg wore 21 all spring, but out of respect for Paul O'Neill and what he means to the Yankees and their fans, he decided to give it up now that he has been added to the 40 man roster and seems to be headed north with the team.A $5000 offer to Betemit for #14 was rejected by the selfish utility infielder. My opinion: Both of them should get over it, its a number. However, Betemit could have made the gesture of good will to welcome Mo to the team. Some notable Yank 14's: Bill Bevens ('46), Bobby Cox ('68-'69), Hideki Irabu ('99), Pat Kelly ('91-'97), Lou Piniella ('74-'88), Moose Skowron ('55-'62), Ron Swaboda ('73-'75).

2008-03-24 16:12:00
Andy Pettitte made 47 throws on level ground Monday, two days after he was scratched from a scheduled start due to back spasms.Pettitte: "I feel better. I felt good enough to go out there and throw. It's still tight. There's still a little pull back there when I try to get out over my front side. So we'll see how I feel tomorrow."He threw for five minutes under the watchful eye of Dave Eiland.Next is to throw off a mound Wednesday or Thursday. His April 2 against Toronto but might be pushed back.

A-ROD ON CANSECO: "NO COMMENT"
2008-03-27 07:53:00
You can tell that A-Rod is getting his moneys worth from that public relations firm he hired. He did what most of the others accused by Jose Canseco, George Mitchell and others should have done...CLAM UP!“It’s over as far as I’m concerned. No further comment on the matter. I’m just excited to be playing baseball.”Perfect!Another great quote came from Hank referring to Canseco: “He wouldn’t have been able to hit the ball out of the infield without steroids.”He probably wouldn't have been able to hit on Madonna either.Cashman is not concerned either: “I’ve got a lot of other things to be worried about more than Alex Rodriguez, to be honest.”See the car in the background? ROSTER SET, ANDY TO DL, K-AAA TO SCRANTON
2008-03-30 01:33:00
The Yankees have their opening day roster:Edwar Ramirez, Jose Veras, Darrell Rasner and Scott Patterson, along with Kei Igawa and Nick Green all go to Sranton.Andy Pettitte (back), Sean Henn (shoulder tendinitis) and Jeff Karstens (groin) are put on the 15-day disabled list. The bullpen spots go to Brian Bruney, Ross Ohlendorf, Billy Traber and Jonathan Albaladejo.Pettitte is scheduled to make a start in a minor league contest in Tampa Sunday and will be re-evaluated by team doctors after his outing.Patterson was not pleased at not making the cut. After leaving Girardi's office he kicked a chair on the way to his locker. La Troy Hawkins and Joba Chamberlain talked with Patterson, who smiled at something they said.Patterson only allowed one hit and no runs in 7 2/3 innings this spring. "I

LA-TRASH
2008-04-04 22:46:00
It didn't take long for my point to be proven.LaTroy Hawkins was a DUMB signing and Kyle Farnsworth should have been sent packing. These are 2 of the points readers of this blog read over the winter and into the spring.THESE GUYS STINK!For those who missed the game, starter Ian Kennedy didn't have it tonight. Kennedy lasted 2-1/3 innings and allowed six runs.He was replaced by the trio of Albaladejo, Ohlendorf and Traber who did a great job of holding down the Rays as the Yanks inched back into the game. Then came the 2 guys who should have NEVER worn a Yankee uniform.Hawkins and Farnsworth sealed the game for the Rays by giving up seven runs in the eighth with the big blow being a 3 run upper tank shot by Carlos Pena off of Farnsworth.Hey Kyle, you don't have Joe Torre to blame for this on

JOBA AND THE PUMP
2008-04-04 10:06:00
There has been too much talk this week about Joba Chamberlain and his fist pumping celebration after his strike-out of Frank Thomas. Most of the noise has been coming from WFAN's "Mike and the Mutt".Reports say the Thomas had no problem with the episode because, he says, thats how the game is today. Good for Frank.I have no problems with it for another reason: FAIRNESS.Look at 3 basics: Hitters hit, pitchers pitch and what's fair is fair.If Thomas would have hit a HR on that pitch, he most likely would have paused for a moment to observe the ball soaring majestically into the Bronx night.Nothing would have been said, except for Mutt-Dog profoundly barking that Joba gave up the HR.Over the years we have seen Reggie watch his famous HR off of the lights in Detroit.Do we remember Jeff Leonards

DIAMOND VISION FOR NEW YANK STADIUM

A Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision will be the main center field, high-definition video-scoreboard display for the new stadium. The new scoreboard will provide fans with HD imagery and is able to display up to four simultaneous 1080 HD images. It will also be the first true high-def LED display in Major League Baseball. The scoreboard has 8,601,600 LED lamps and is 101 feet wide and 59 feet tall, producing 5,925 square-feet of high-definition display area. The scoreboard in use at the current stadium measures 24.9 X 32.8 with 486,400 LED lamps.

MORON MORGAN
2008-04-13 21:02:00
More lack of intelligence from Joe Morgan:Manny Ramirez is up at in the first and Phil Hughes throws a fast ball low for a called strike. Morgan says "Daisuke throws 90 and Hughes throws 90, but Hughes' 90 is faster because it moves more."Hey Joe...90 is 90. It might be more difficult to hit because of the movement, but movement doesn't make the ball go faster. Then in reference to that same pitch, Morgan says "Manny couldn't handle that pitch."OK, fine....Manny then lines one into center and Morgan says " You cant throw just any pitch you want to Manny cause he can handle anything."Well what is it Joe? Can he or can't he?Is anyone at ESPN listening?

CURSE SHIRT DONATED TO RED SOX CHARITY
2008-04-15 14:10:00
The Evil Empire strikes again! The BOSTON HERALD reports: The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston confirmed yesterday that the New York Yankees plan to donate to the Jimmy Fund the David Ortiz jersey they chipped from beneath two feet of cement in the new Yankee Stadium. “They will be sending it to us later this week,” hospital spokesman Bill Schaller said. The Yanks thought it more appropriate to let the shirt be auctioned off to help the Jimmy Fund - a charity, ironically enough, synonymous with the Red Sox. “The Steinbrenner family has supported the Jimmy Fund in the past, so we’re very grateful they thought of us,” Schaller said. “I think everyone’s on the same side when it comes to cancer. We all want to beat it.”HOW EVIL!

SPACED OUT! FIRST PITCH FROM SPACE!
2008-04-15 12:38:00
Yanks/Sox ceremonial 1st pitch will come from the International Space Station! From Yankees.com:The New York Yankees announced today that NASA astronaut Dr. Garrett Reisman will throw out the ceremonial first pitch from the International Space Station prior to the Yankees' game vs. the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, April 16. It will be the first-ever ceremonial first pitch thrown from space in Yankee Stadium's history. Reisman, 40, docked at the International Space Station on Wednesday, March 12, carrying dirt from the Yankee Stadium pitcher's mound, a Yankees banner and a hat autographed by Yankees Principal Owner George M. Steinbrenner.Dr. Reisman is a native of Parsippany, N.J., and a lifelong Yankees fan.See the car in the background? It's my 2007 Mustang Premium GT/California Specia

GIRARDI: TIME FOR PEN TO STEP UP
2008-04-15 19:52:00
Joe Girardi sent a notice to his bullpen after Billy Traber and Brian Bruney embarrassed the team with their putrid bush-league performance filling in for Joba Chamberlain against the Rays on Monday night."Other guys need to step up," Girardi said. "That's the reality of baseball -- it happens all the time. Jeter went down and Gonzalez stepped up. Jorge went down and Molina stepped up. It's no different when it's a pitcher. Someone has to step up and I expect our guys to do it."Translation: Jonathan Albaladejo was called up from Scranton to fill the roster spot. That doesn't mean that he will be the one returned to Scranton when Joba returns.

ITS ABOUT TIME! THANKS KYLE!
2008-04-18 07:51:00
I have to give credit where credit is due.My favorite whipping boy "done good" last night. After another horrible performance by an obviously washed up Mike Mussina, Kyle Farnsworth delivered a special message to Manny Ramirez and the rest of Terry Francona's crew that there is a new "Joe" in town.NY Daily News' John Harper explains:The Yankees didn't play this type of hardball when Joe Torre was managing, and it infuriated fans and annoyed some players. They thought the Red Sox pitchers got in too many free shots on Yankee hitters without retaliation. They couldn't understand why David Ortiz was never dusted. It's hard to believe Joe Girardi ordered Farnsworth to send Ramirez a message, but it's clear the new manager wants his team to play with an edge. Maybe Farnsworth was just more comfor

GIRARDI WONT PICK ON POPE
2008-04-17 08:01:00
Joe Girardi will not complaint about playing 18 of 20 games on the road to accommodate Pope Benedict XVI's Mass on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. “You'd like to be home a little bit more, but who's going to argue with the pope? No, not me. You're going to have to play 81 games on the road. And if you're going to play a lot of games on the road, to me the month to do it is early, when you're fresh and it's not real hot.”MLB Senior Vice President Katy Feeney said changes had to be made by Major League Baseball to accommodate Benedict's Masses at Nationals Park in Washington today and at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.

POOR MANAGING DOESN'T HELP
2008-04-18 22:42:00
Is 3 weeks into the season long enough to criticize the manager? I hope so, because here it goes.1. Phil Hughes wasn't the greatest tonight, he struggled, but he should have been able to complete the 6th inning. Instead he was pulled after the A-Rod error. Hughes was the victim there, if "A" makes that play, he's still in the game with 2 outs. I know he was at 97 pitches, God forbid that a young viable arm should throw more, but let him finish the inning.I HATE pitch counts! ESPECIALLY when you turn it over to a SUSPECT bull pen.In 1967, 22 year old rookie Tom Seaver pitched 251 innings. Seaver went on to pitch 200+ innings every season until 1980 when he was 35.1986, 23 year old Roger Clemens pitched 254. 1984, 19 year old Dwight Gooden, 218. 2005, Dontrelle Willis hurled 236 innings at

PAUL O'NEILL IN PERSPECTIVE
2008-04-18 10:49:00
With all of the talk about #21 and who is wearing it, who should not wear it and should it be retired, I figured I would look into where Paulie fits in with the other retired numbers. With the Yankees, O'Neill has:1254 Games Played, 27th all time, 10 "retirees" have more.4700 At Bats, 26th, 10 "retirees" have more.720 Runs Scored, 24th, 8 "retirees" have more.1426 Hits, 20th, 9 "retirees" have more.304 Doubles, 14th, 7 "retirees" have more.185 Home Runs, 15th, 8 "retirees" have more.858 RBI, 13th, 7 "retirees" have more..303 Avg, 11th, 5 "retirees" are better. Here is a quick note: None of the retirees above O'Neill are named "Jackson".If the Yankees retire #21, fine. If they don't, thats fine too. I'm not going to boo a guy for wearing a certain number. To me, it's just a number.See the car

FROM TREY TO KEI
2008-04-19 22:20:00
Ian Kennedy couldn't make it out of the third inning. Giving up four runs on five hits, walking five and striking out four against the scummy Orioles.Kennedy is being mentored by Mike Mussina, and not only does his act on the mound look like Mussina, so does his pitching. After the game, a visibly angry Joe Girardi was asked if Kennedy's problem was a mechanics flaw.Girardi said "I'm not a mechanics guy, when I send someone out there I expect them to throw strikes."The manager also added that Kennedy needs to be more aggressive with 2 strikes like he was last year. He's getting timid, just like Mussina.Meanwhile back at the ranch....Kei Igawa is 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA.Darrell Rasner is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA.Heath Phillips is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA.Phil Hughes should take note of those stats too.

BOB WATSON IS A STOOGE!
2008-04-19 20:56:00
Here is yet another assault by Boob Watson on the Yankees with unfair fines and suspensions.Boob is still mad at the elder Steinbrenner for exposing his incompetence as a GM (read Joel Sherman's "Birth of a Dynasty").Kyle Farnsworth has been suspended for 3 games and fined $2000 by the "vice president of on-field operations" for the wayward pitch to Manny Ramirez on Thursday night. What a stooge. (My apologies to Larry, Moe and Curly)Ramirez believes it might have been retaliation for Alex Rodriguez getting plucked the Wednesday night, after hitting home run against Clay Buchholz. He wasn't really upset about the pitch, calling it "part of the competition" between the rivals. "You know, we hit one of their best players last night, and I guess they want to send a message. They need to back

DOES GAMMONS THINK BEFORE HE SPEWS?
2008-04-21 09:28:00
Last night on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight", Peter Gammons was telling the story of the Blue Jays releasing Frank Thomas.Gammons relayed to us that Thomas was unhappy about his playing time and Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi was unhappy about having someone unhappy, so he sent Frankie packing.Great, good inside info, until....Gammons says that he doesn't know where Thomas will find work because...."If Barry Bonds can't find work, how ill Thomas find work?"Note to Pete: The difference is BAGGAGE.Barry Bonds comes along with an INDICTMENT and a MEDIA CIRCUS. Who would want that? Thats why Barroid is unemployed.Thomas does come with a history of whining, but it's better than what Barroid brings. The challenge for Thomas is to find a team that will fit his needs. Those teams are scarce right now.I have a

HANK: START JOBA NOW
2008-04-21 07:39:00
Hank Steinbrenner is has pressed the "panic" button. He wants Joba Chamberlain to move into the starting rotation.Red Text From NYT:“I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him." (when did he say that? Can some one send me the exact quote, please.)"That is what we are working toward and we need him there now. There is no question about it, you don’t have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don’t do that. You have to be an idiot to do that.”Goose Gossage, Trevor Hoffman, Lee Smith, Troy Percival...oh never mind..Steinbrenner said the Yankees were working on easing Chamberlain into the rotation, but he would not be specific on a timetable. The Yankees’ brain trust had wanted to limit Chamberlain’s innings by having hi
