HORSE LIFE
2008-03-05 10:12:00
Have you ever wanted to own a horse? That’s not really a question I’ve ever had to ask myself until today. You see, right now I am a 23 year old male, so back in the day I never really went through the phase of wanting a pony. However, I do own a DS, and I bring it with me most places to pass the time. Today was just one of those days, as I was on a two hour journey on the train, and with most of my top choice DS games completed or played to absolute death I decided to bring my horse on the train with me, no not my real horse, it’s already too crowed on there. I am of course talking about Horse Life, a game which I will honestly admit was a whole lot better than I expected. Horse Life is a simple game, with an instruction book so small it literally fell out of the box as soon as I op

Pets become victims of foreclosure
2008-03-03 11:23:00
Eve stands up and stretches leisurely, then slowly walks over for a scratch behind the ears. The tabby knows nothing of the foreclosure crisis, yet she's one of its latest victims. So is Brutus, a beautiful gray cat, Diamante, a spotted mutt with a big head, Princess, his sister, and Ellie, a doe-eyed shepherd mix.Shelters traditionally have not tracked foreclosures, but Joan Carlson Radabaugh noticed a trend recently added them to the list of reasons people can check when they bring an animal to the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach, where she is executive director. "In the last month, we had approximately eight animals come to us specifically for the reason that people were losing their homes to foreclosure," Radabaugh said. But that number may be higher. Another 38 pe

Is there any seven-year-old who has not longed for a puppy? But, as most parents know, longing for a pet and actually dealing with the day-to- day reality of owning a pet are two different things. The lack of basic education regarding animal care has prompted the Society For Animals in Distress to implement human/animal bonding lessons for Grade 2 learners in nine disadvantaged areas in Gauteng. The initiative began with just three schools in 2003 and has since expanded to include 52 schools, with an estimated 10000 children participating in the programme. “Our programme commenced five years ago and our aim is to increase knowledge, awareness and animal-owner responsibility in children from a young age,” says Heather Muller, the general manager of the society. “We have a trai

Dos an Park is a fairly small square in Ganging, southern Seoul that commemorates the Korean patriot, Do San Han Chang-ho (1878-1938). He mostly worked in the U.S. and China during Japan's occupation of Korea. He was a mentor of fellow countrymen leading their lives in support of Korea. It was a pity that he passed away before Korea's independence from Japan. However he left some footprints in the park. The park, about seven acres, covers his memorial hall and burial site. It is impressive to see his legendary sayings carved into a couple of stones in the park such as ``Young people! If you love your motherland, then first of all, you should build up a man of strong moral fiber yourself."A noticeable artifact is his sedentary bronze statue pensively sitting on a bench near a standing one. With alternately tearful goodbyes and barely contained impatience, more than 100 South Floridians surrendered their exotic animals Saturday at a zoo event designed to give owners an alternative to simply turning them loose. The canopied plastic tables at the Miami Metro Zoo became exhibits of their own as passers-by hoisted children and snapped pictures of the snakes, scorpions and turtles being handed over in laundry baskets, food storage containers and pillow cases.Of the more than 150 pets handed over on "Exotic Pet Amnesty Day" by people who could no longer care for the beasts, all but six found new homes.Among the more bizarre submissions were a rhino iguana, a spotted African servile cat and a Dortmund — a raccoon-looking mammal found in South America."This is garden-variety stuff,"

A new study should have cat owners purring with delight. It suggests they are somehow partly protected from the ravages of heart disease."Over a 20-year period, people who never owned a cat faced a 40-per-cent greater risk of death due to heart attack than previous or current cat owners," said the lead researcher, Adnan Qureshi, a professor at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Qureshi, who presented the findings at a medical conference in New Orleans yesterday, is at a loss to explain his study, which involved 4,435 volunteers. "The best theory we can come up with is that ... cat ownership leads to reduced stress levels which, in turn, lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease" he suggested. On the other hand, it is possible that cats don't directly shield people from heart attacks. Instea

Pets make great companions for all people, young and old, as well as families. They key is to find the types of pets that are right for you, whether you like cats, dogs, birds, rodents, or any other type of domesticated animal. You should choose a pet based on what sort of animal suits your personality and works with your lifestyle. Some types of pets are better suited to people living in small apartments while other types of pets do best on very large properties where they have lots of room to exercise. It’s important to realize that not all animals make good pets.Dog mushing in the city? You bet! Meet Rancy Reyes, head of Southern California Urban Mushing. Pets Can Improve Your Mood:For those who love animals, it’s virtually impossible to stay in a bad mood when a pair of loving puppy eyes meets yours, or when a super-soft cat rubs up against your hand. Research supports the mood-enhancing benefits of pets. A recent study found that men with AIDS were less likely to suffer from depression if they owned a pet. (According to a press release, men with AIDS who did not own a pet were about three times more likely to report symptoms of depression than men who did not have AIDS. But men with AIDS who had pets were only about 50 percent more likely to report symptoms of depression, as compared to men in the study who did not have AIDS.) Hunting dogs
2008-04-08 06:28:00
Hunting dogs were bred primarily to work with people to hunt animals, fish and birds. Hunting dogs have been bred to suit varying environments and climates. Some Hunting dogs were bred specifically to work in water whilst other dogs are more suited to work on land and many of the dogs are comfortable and capable of working in either land or water environments. The evolution of the many breeds of Hunting dogs were dictated by the changing requirements of man. Hunting Dogs have been bred specifically to enhance their skills in helping man to hunt. Hunting dogs have been used by man dating back to Antiquity when their very survival was dependent on their hunting skills. The quarry sought provided man with food, clothing and even the hides were used for shelter. The advent of ne

Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance. WAT CAN WE DO?
2008-04-09 21:41:00
Healthy chickens need an outdoor run and a weatherproof hen-house of roughly 30cmx30cm per hen. You can buy a hen-house (see Country Smallholding) or if you’re the least bit handy, you can make one. The house will need dark, private nest boxes (4 birds to one nest box), perches to roost on, a door for the hens, and a larger door for cleaning out. It must be secure from predators and shut up overnight. They can have the run of the garden, as long as they can’t get at your vegetable plot in the growing season. You need to put hay in the nest boxes, and hay, straw or sawdust as bedding in the house. This should be changed every week, with the old bedding added to the compost heap. You can feed them your food scraps, along with a couple of handfuls of grain and layers’ mash or pellets (sp

KEEPING POULTRY
2008-04-09 21:33:00
what is it?Most people equate the word poultry with chickens, but it also covers ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea-fowl, quail, and arguably even pheasants and pigeons (dictionary definition = the keeping of domestic fowl). All have their particular quirks: chickens are easy to keep, ducks need access to water, and geese are hardy, tough and self-reliant but need a bit more space. Chickens of course are the most common; there are many breeds and varieties available with different characters, some are for show and have incredible ‘hairstyles’, others are renowned for their consistent supply and quantity of eggs, and others make excellent table birds. You don’t need much experience or capital to keep a few chickens in the garden and there are many benefits other than fresh, free-range eggs

BIRD FLU
2008-04-11 12:19:00
Well, what are the real chances of it affecting you or your pet birds? The answer is practically none. There are many facts involved in this answer: 1. It is chiefly a waterfowl and poultry disease.2. There is no cases in the USA in poultry or otherwise3. Strict quarantine laws greatly hinder the possibility of an outbreak occurring (30 day quarantine)4. There is not a case of human to human transfer yet .5. The H5N1 strain is the only strain to affect humans.6. Influenza viruses do not persist in environments outside the hosts for long period of time (ideal condition about a week) Now, I'm not going to tell you that it will never happen. In medicine and viruses there is no absolute. But, there are so many factors against it that the possibility is a thousand times less than being

Recycling Eggs
2008-04-12 22:18:00
Recycling Eggs Despite your best efforts, your hen is still going to lay plenty of eggs. A clutch will consist of 8 - 12 eggs. A lot of hens will lay many more than this, and never show any interest in building a nest or sitting on the eggs. No one has been able to determine with any certainty why some (if not most) button hens simply have no interest in their eggs, but it seems that a hen who goes "broody" (chooses to build a nest and set the eggs) is the exception rather than the rule. If your hen is one of those rare birds who will nest, I've developed a little system that will keep her from having to lay a whole clutch each time. My system presumes that your female lives alone or with other females, and will not be laying fertilized eggs. She'll have to lay the first clutch herself, a

Special Care for Female Buttons
2008-04-12 22:17:00
Special Care for Female Buttons Button hens have a unique nutritional and environmental needs, above and beyond those of the males. The primary reason for this is egg-laying. The production of eggs uses vast amounts of the female's resources, which must be compensated for in diet and lighting. When compared to the size of the hen that produces it, the Button Quail egg is proportionately one of the largest eggs lain by any bird. (This means, the weight of the egg is a significant percentage of the weight of the hen herself). Like chickens, button quail can lay one egg a day every day, for almost her entire life. Without special attention, this practice can very quickly deplete the female of her bone calcium and other essential nutrients, leading to a very early death. Without proper care,

First of all, what is a Button Quail? Buttons are the smallest of the "true" quails, about four inches long, and are native to Australia, Southeast Asia, India, etc. Click here for a map of the distribution of the Button Quail. In addition to the normal "wild type", they come in silver, white, browns and various combinations and shades of these colors, also known as "mutations". Unfortunately, our buttons do not have a very long lifespan; females' can be as short as 18 months, but if they are given proper care and nutrition (see below), you can expect your button hen to live three to four years or even more. Males average four to five years (again, depending on care and nutrition), but I have heard of at least a few male buttons who lived to be as old as nine! There are actually several di
