2008-03-07 09:58:00
Yeah people, you got it right!! Another of those great times in India . And this time it’s big. Really Big. And unfortunately, I ain’t attending it this time around. I just wish I could have had attended it this time around. Huh :( For a little bit of details, this time it’s not just another rock concert. It’s a “Road 2 Rock” people !!, and it just can’t get bigger. Rockers unite, huddle up in a bus, rock all day and night, all along the journey from Pune to Bangalore . Awesome I say. Really great !! And who all are performing you say. I say it features Megadeth , Machine Head, Pentagram, JunkYard Groove, and a whole lot of other Indian Rock bands (our own guys next door, you see) More details can be found on the official Megadeth homepage , w

Planning to buy an unlocked iphone ?? PureMobile is the place to be
2008-03-04 07:28:00
It’s been a long time since I first decided to buy an iPhone or probably for that matter, htc touch touch screen pda or the new and stunning lg cell phones or maybe even the Blackberry (oh no I’m not that rich to buy this stuff on my own. It’s so good to have a brother, somewhere in the states, with a lot of love (and cash :-) !!) for the younger brother) So, I went surfing the web in search of places where I could find unlocked iPhones or other good GSM phones. And I surfed a lot of online marketplaces, from the more general of ebay to the more specific cell-phone selling portals. And then I happened to lurk into PureMobile.com – just another of the many online mobile shops. But, it is different, as I found out later, and to be simple, I’ll say that i was not disap

The state of entrepreneurship (web 2.0) in India - part 1 (the talent crunch)
2008-02-25 14:00:00
Everybody is talking about the entrepreneurship revolution going around in India these days, something which started in the silicon valley some years back. And no, India has not really come into the mainstream of the web 2.0 scene. Try asking a few people (probably bloggers, tech bloggers especially) and see what the answer is. No, I’m not here to write something about someone or try and prove something in this post, it’s just an observation, and not even classified as right or wrong, or good or bad. In this series of articles, I try and go deeper into the state of entrepreneurship (strictly the web 2.0 space) in India, the problems faced by the budding entrepreneurs, and the small consumer internet space in India which seems to be overflowing with all sorts of startups right n

Off to bangalore for some time now
2008-02-19 09:56:00
Aye yo people. I’m happy. I’m gay. I just uploaded my new typo theme and now bishtblogs is running smoothly on rails. I happened to notice some changes with the rails or with my host, something that has led to my weblog running pretty damn fast. I always wondered whether any rails app runs smoothly on a shared hosting environment, but this time it seems (with rails 2.0) that it can. I have still not really gone into the stats (my logs et all), but for the naked eye, it seems that everything is up and running fine. I still have not integrated my photoblog module with Typo, and I guess I won’t be able to do so for the coming week or two, since I’m off to bangalore tomorrow to meet some people. For the moment the area right under the left navigation that says “

bishtblogs on Typo-5.0.2 - a preview to the new theme
2008-02-14 13:24:00
O yo yo people. I’m almost about done with my theme for Typo – 5.0.2 and will be moving over to the new one this weekend. I would have gone with the new look last week itself, but I decided to change a few things at the last moment and also added a few things functionally. Here is just a preview of what the new theme will be like. I bet it looks much better than in this snapshot.

Blogging for the sake of V-Day
2008-02-14 10:20:00
Yeah this used to be a red rose some 3 years back. Doesn’t this thing resemble reality ..?? I guess that’ what a relation turns into in 3 years. Isn’t it ? Just wondering

The year gone by and the 2.0 road ahead
2007-12-31 12:17:00
Y2K7 is almost gone (probably by the time I finish writing this article it would have already gone by) and I’m feeling a little nostalgic thinking about all the events that happened in 2007) Yeah, I graduated back in 2007. Did my bachelors in CSE. That’s a big thing, keeping in mind the fact, that I always just managed to move on to the next year in college. I was one amongst a bunch of us back-benchers. I still remember one of the Professors, VLSI design class, scolding my friend something like “you are criminal.get out of the class”. Okay, it was more hillarious for all of us than been embarassed about :) Then came our Lohri celebration, followed a month later by our farewell. Great times really. All those days, sitting with all the friends, discussing what we w

Resolutions..resolutions...all the way...
2007-12-30 10:50:00
It's that time of the year again when people often bug you with the same old and silly question .. "What are your new year's resolution??". And as always, I seem to go in a never-ending thought process as to what it is that I really resolve to do this coming new year. It seems I get stuck in an infinite loop. I happened to press CTRL+C this time around. And I have come up with a list of things that I need to do this year. Ummm..my resolutions.."Slog more and Blog much more"—this one's actually inspired by Gaurav Bhatnagar's original "Blog less, Slog more" motto.Learn as much as possible about SEO/SEM, and the internet advertising industry. Complete my Typo theme asap, and hack out some major ruby code to incorporate some changes in Typo.Wr

Off to Scorpions at Bangalore..
2007-12-08 10:02:00
Finally, the day when I can do away with all my wrong doings (missing the Aerosmith concert earlier this year :p).  The last time that I was in a rock concert was similarly in december last year, the Deep Purple….you know the smoke was really on water that day :) I just hope they live upto their expectations (I have tons…. "Rhythm of love – Scorpions acoustica..live at Lisboa" play that one more time guys)The last time Scorpions played in India was .. I don't remember …maybe these guys never played in India ever before. But whatever, I hope there is tons of crowd to cheer these guys all the way, and hope it turns out great. The only problem that the Deep Purple concert, that I talked about earlier, had was of the crowd. There were not more than 20

Working with rails dot com bug !!
2007-10-25 09:06:00
Working with rails , is an online community and a place for rails guys to meet up and do some great things. Myself been a true RoR follower, am a member of this community.Recently, I forgot my password and I had to ask for a new password link to be sent to my e-mail address. But when there was no e-mail from wwr for a long time, I decided to check out what the problem was. And I found something really interesting.See, basically I had created an account earlier at wwr with a particular e-mail address and I joined the community again with the same e-mail id. Why I did so was because I had forgotten my password and the e-mail that I had used for my earlier account. So, I provided the same account and the system happily accepted it without any problems. But, as happens in a lot of cases, the pr

Trying out flock on my win machine
2008-03-11 11:11:00
Oh yo people, it’s spring time again, and the weather is super-fun. It’s awkward, but I feel the same way on the web too. The colors are vivid, the energy is high, and when you’re on flock , everything is kewl. After a very long time, I made the toughest decision to give Flock a try (my desktop, which runs windows XP is actually in no mood to take any further load, given the fact that it already makes a noise similar to the one that a jet plane makes during take-off, whenever I run photoshop), and somehow it has gone down pretty fine till now If you are a Firefox user, or have been one earlier, then you will find a stark similarity between Flock and Firefox (apart from the “F” word that they share in common). I came to a conclusion from viewing the fi

Poll : Google search or Digg
2008-03-11 07:13:00
The search engine war has not yet started. Probably it will never start, cause probably Google will never loose to anybody in the near future. But just try and think, as to how many times have you tried to search for a better/relevant story/article on Digg rather than Google. Isn’t this strange that unconsciously, we are moving towards the Digg results rather than the Google search results. Alternatively, to say that when Mahalo started the “humar-powered-search-engine-space”, then they had a brilliant idea. But maybe the implementation was not that good. The users could not really absorb their concept. But, on the other hand, consciously or unconsciously, Digg has entered the “human-powered-search-engine-space” and nobody is taking note of it. We are a

Poll : OpenSocial v/s Facebook
2008-03-10 09:22:00
It was just for fun that I started to develop a facebook application, and slowly getting used to the Ruby wrapper for the facebook API. But then, suddenly, a few days earlier, a friend of mine told me to try out OpenSocial. To be honest, before that day I had never given an iota of thought to try out OpenSocial, and was happily developing my app for Facebook . Try and think of it. Have we really forgotten OpenSocial ?? Has Facebook really changed the face of web ?? Why aren’t enough developers building apps for MySpace or Orkut ?? Why only Facebook ?? Or why not facebook and opensocial both ?? A plethora of questions come in my mind when I start thinking about OpenSocial v/s Facebook. Can someone please help me on this. surveys – Take Our Poll

Joyent loves facebook apps developers
2008-03-10 08:22:00
If you are a facebook developer and you are having a hard time getting the right host for your app (one who understands scalability), then the obvious choice is Joyent’s accelerator hosting for developers. It’s no wonder that almost a third of facebook applications are hosted with Joyent’s accelerator program. But, but, but, this is not just the end. Things get even better now !! Joyent, Facebook and Dell, recently partnered to give developers like me (have a lot of ideas, but not the bucks!!) a free accelerator package for one whole year. Now, that is simply put as A.W.E.S.O.M.E !! You might not get all the features of a Joyent’s accelerator hosting, but certainly more than enough for something free. Quoting Joyent on this, the only limitations are: Speci

Yahoo adds facebook - goes completely customizable
2008-03-14 14:50:00
Facebook with Yahoo . Sounds good ??!!. Or doesn’t ??!! Yahoo has recently come up with the “My Yahoo beta” (although it has been some time since the beta was released), there are quite some interesting features now available. Simple things first, the whole page has been completely thrown open for customization. Not just the layout or the colors, but more than that there are widgets that you can add and play around with. Even with the colors and layouts, there are more choices available now than before. Personally, after trying out “citrus”, “blue” and “black” colors, I went a step ahead and into the “Passion” category, where I immediately found out “Football” customization. eeee . Yeah, there must be tons of

Reviewing doteasy
2008-03-13 11:25:00
Yes, it’s that time of the month, when I generally do a neat little review of a product or service, that I’ve lately come across. And no, it’s not always great. This time around I go about reviewing another web host, going by the name of Doteasy – web hosting – although I’m still not clear as to why the name “doteasy”?? Anyways, off to the review Firstly, I am always amazed at the way web hosts add the zing to their package by offering all the good things like “2 months free” or “pay ahead and get a year off” !! On most of the times, I am not really even bothered about this fancy stuff, but this time I got a complete shocker, when I read “free web hosting on ordering of a domain name”. Well, even other

The link exchange phenomenon
2008-03-13 09:19:00
Holla people !! I am receiving quite a few e-mails these days, about the technorati link exchange. I have been skeptical about using this form of link exchange (as I have been about using direct link exchange methods). But, just out of curiosity, I’m getting into the link exchange rat-race. Just wanted to see how much effect does it really make If you are in a mood to do some link exchange with me, either a technorati , RSS or plain simple web links, then please do the following. For technorati link exchanges, please favorite my blog (bishtblogs.net) using this link ( When doing so, you can use any or all of these tags – “web-2.0, technology, design, social media, startups, entrepreneurship, blogging, sanjay bisht, web applications, consumer internet space in i

Online signs sounds interesting
2008-03-17 14:13:00
You all must have heard of Myntra.com, which is essentially the Indian-ized version of threadless.com, plus with some more cool features and all. So why am I talking about this ?? Because : Again, I was surfing tonight, and I somehow managed to reach BuildAsign.com, which is essentially into the business of making signages online. Something like, you go and pick up a sign, customize it with all sorts of things, and they deliver it to you at your doorstep. Plenty of options, from Banners, Flags, Vinyls, Street Signs, License Plates,Real Estate Signs, et all. Seems like a good opportunity to try out in India – as it is everyone’s just copying the U.S concepts here in India. Okay, just kidding !! But, probably we will get a banner or a Sandwich Board, designed and delivered

Website design à Montréal :)
2008-03-17 13:42:00
“conception d’enchaînement à Montr éal” or website design in Montreal. French is a naughty little language man (no offense meant to anything or anybody please), you should look at the way how it is pronounced !! Just love that accent :) A friend of mine in Canada (his Linkedin profile heading goes something like this – Graduate Studen, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal (Universite de Montreal)), recently started an NGO in his quest for Social Entrepreneurship (he’s always been a genius at these things) and was looking for people / designers for his website. Finally, he did the job himself, being great at websites himself. But, we really missed out on one design firm (NVI solutions) in Montreal. Later, I happened to come across it (NVI solutions) based out o

Trying out the new version of PPP
2008-03-17 11:01:00
So, I needed some cash to buy out good web hosting for the app that we are building these days, and what can be better than using my blog to do that. Yeah, so I signed up for Pay Per Post (make money) and off went my first sponsored post for them. There are a lot of websites doing the same thing (I mean paying you for sponsored reviews), but PPP just stands out (I sound like I’m doing a paid review !!). Well, actually, it does, for better or worse, both. Worse, for the single reason, that they took a long time approving my blog, in fact of the fact that this blog is a part of the TechDispenser technology network (which essentially means that there is at least something good in here, if not a lot). I later checked out with them as to what the reason was, and they politely told me th

Seed funding and mentoring come free
2008-03-16 15:33:00
I happened to reach Sita’s blog over at Binary Day, and fortunately (or unfortunately) to this article about Seed Funding over there. It’s such a pity that there aren’t enough VCs or firms that are ready to fund ideas, judging only by the ideas, the people and the motivation. Why the need of business plans ?? I really can’t write a BP, nor can I face the disappointment on my partner’s face (as well as mine) after getting rejected for not really having a good business plan. Did I get rejected because I had no business plan, or I could not write one efficiently ?? The latter is a more appropriate reason. I had written about it in my earlier post as well that Web-2.0 has not reached India as yet. You can read that post here (about the talent crunch that startu

The Entrepreneur's Quote
2008-03-16 05:51:00
This one’s good…really good I say. Try and think of the major driving force behind entrepreneurship – as to why you want to be an entrepreneur. Is it the money, fame, freedom, or anything else. What comes to my mind is what I can relate to with this quote. “There is only one way to live life, and that’s my way”

Web-2.0 - where is the money??
2008-03-15 15:17:00
Web 2.0 is not just a version of the web anymore. It has become a platform for quick-money-on-the-go. Have an idea, will earn millions. The amount of money in a web-2.0 venture can be made out by these quick facts – Facebook is worth $15 billion, Feedburner a $100 million, Youtube a cool $1.65 billion, and so on with a lot of other web-2.0 startups(all information from the Richer Scales “Another bubble” video). Let’s just try to get behind the scenes and see where the money is. I haven’t been lucky enough like some of these people, so I’m just curious to know as to where is the money. Or is there any money in reality. In essence, in the consumer internet space, there are notably 3 parties to anything. First, the publisher of the content, second, th

Bloggers' choice : creativity in ads : text links or reviews
2008-03-15 12:54:00
In the AD-age, when online advertising is growing by leaps and bounds, the search for the perfect ad network is still a delusion. In a recent survey by McKinsey Quarterly about online marketing (requires free registration to read), a large number of companies (major part of which are Fortune 500 companies) do plan to invest even heavily (if not doing already) in online advertisements. And not surprisingly, companies are in the search of new and unexplored methodologies / ways for online advertisements. The bottom line is, companies are ready to shell out money, but on newer medias Undoubtedly, the report also carries a lot of stress on blogs, and how companies are looking at consumer generated content for marketing and advertisement. Cashing on these opportunities, are 2 of the major

Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. - get your tickets now !!
2008-03-19 16:59:00
If you have been following the sports news (and more specifically the boxing stuff), then you must be knowing about the De La Hoya v/s Mayweather match. Even I’m not a boxer, but this is one of these news that’s termed as “breaking news”. There is a lot of buzz already surrounding this match, and some popular blogs like the ESPN blog and doghouseboxing have got a lot of inner details to this. For a brief of what actually happened when these two giants meet, this is a quote from the ESPN weblog Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya, who shattered box office records when they met last spring, are close to finishing a deal for a rematch, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com Wednesday De La Hoya had planned to return to the ring May 3, but

Wordpress for a facebook alternative
2008-03-19 16:52:00
I was over at Rashmi Sinha’s (of the slideshare.net fame) weblog and there is a very interesting article that she has written about the possibility of wordpress becoming a social networking platform, and comparable to Facebook. It’s a must read really. Go checkout the blog entry, and also do some more reading at further links in the article itself. It’s worth spending time lurking on the internet.

Addicted to ??
2008-03-20 17:16:00
Eh, I came across this advertisement about Addiction-Treatment recently (just another one of the dozens we used to watch earlier on TV), and I was really wondering whether such treatments really work ?? I have seen people, very close ones, very closely, getting addicted to drugs and then just losing it all. Even I am addicted, but in my case it’s just a cigarette (which I presume does not do any single bit of harm till the time you are smoking 10-20 a day – which thankfully I’m not ;) that’s called optimism baby !!). Anyways, on a serious note, if you know someone who is addicted, and you wanna help him out, then this is a good place to go about things for Addiction treatment, Addiction treatment center. They seem to have gone a step ahead of just having a therapi

The two essential tools for any web developer
2008-03-20 11:42:00
Time and again, I am awe struck with both “FireBug” and the “Web Developer” toolbars for Firefox, but always forget to write a word of praise for the developer(s) behind these two great tools. But then again, I was virtually pulled out of my death state by Firebug, and not for the first or second time – a hundredth or a thousandth time most probably. Okay, so the moral of the story is – Use Firebug and the Web developer toolbar for your web development skills. And, this tip is meant for the youngsters only; I don’t want to be termed as stupid by the geeks all around, for such a trivial advice. I got this advice from one such geek, on one of those geeky forums. :)

The shared webhost of choice
2008-03-26 13:57:00
A dew days back, a friend of mine was desperately searching for a new host. It seemed that the company he was hosting with really pissed him off with too much outages or problems of some sort. So, he started on a trip of web hosting search, which I always take as a pain in the A**, simply because there are so many out there, and you cannot find a good reason to go for one and not go for the other. There will be webhosts which have been great for some, and not so great for the others. So, the dilemma persists. If you take my advice then ASO is a good host – cheap, strong, feature-stacked, awesome support, and all the others. Great thing basically. For whatever time I have been hosting with them, I have had not a single bit of problem. And yeah, get a cool 15% discount when you use

Online mobile buying comes to Indonesia as well??
2008-03-31 06:48:00
Okay, I was not sure of this – whether mobile portals existed in Asia (specially Indonesia ). I thought that online mobile stores existed only in the westernized world. I never thought Indonesia also had it’s share of own mobile portals (apart from ebay – which I am very cautious about for buying electronic goods as such). Presenting to you, www.imobileplaza.com, a leading wholesaler and retailer of mobile phones in Indonesia. One thing that I was not too sure of was why the prices were in USD; I guess they plan to expand from only Indonesia to a more generic mobile portal. That’s actually great, but with just one problem that it looses the local touch and tends to get into the bigger mobile market across the whole universe. And as usual, I was planning to buy the
