Three Point Risk!

A recent survey revealed that the majority of people now consider mobile phones to be an essential part of modern life and that more people in the UK use mobile phones than wear wrist watches. The same survey found that 90% of car and commercial vehicle drivers admit to making or receiving calls whilst driving and 75% of these have at some time held their phones whilst doing so.  department of Transport statistics for 2005 reveal that 13 people were killed and 400 injured in crashes involving drivers using mobile phones; but independent experts maintain that, due to the difficulty of obtaining credible evidence, the true figure could be up to ten times higher. 70,000 offences In December 2003, the Government introduced legislation which imposed a fixed penalty of £30 on drivers caught using mobile phones whilst driving and considered not to be in a position to have proper control of their vehicles. In the event, the new legislation had little affect and with offences runni

Any remedies at the ready?
2007-02-12 19:51:17
Steve McNamara’s advice about taking care when buying a second-hand TXII is timely. Also, his mention of the FX4R reminds me that no sooner had that cab’s problems surfaced back in early 1983 than the independent technical experts came out with remedies ranging from tougher timing chains to complete engine transplants.  Where are such remedies for the TXII?  Is the engine or the driveshaft problem so complex that no solution can be found? Of course there may be warranty implications here: the FX4R’s warranty was a mere six months/6,000 miles, so as soon as the cab was out of warranty, say six months, then conversions could be fitted with no fear of falling foul of Carbodies’ wrath.  Most early TXIIs must be out of warranty by now, so with the price of the cab falling like a stone since the TX4 came out, surely there is something that can be done that is both effective and economical to turn the TXII from a four-wheeled headache to a useful piece o

Council to consider revised taxi ordinance
2007-02-12 19:39:23
This week, City Council will consider new rules for cab drivers and the companies that employ them, including requiring cabbies to pass a test covering Houston's layout and city laws that govern the taxi industry. There used to be such a test, the Chronicle reports, but councilmembers voted it out in the 1990s. "The cab industry has grown so much that many of the drivers are not familiar with Houston, and that's the majority of the complaints we get," Tina Paez, a deputy director of Houston's Finance and Administration Department, said. Houstonist agrees: We rarely take cabs, but a couple of times that we have, we've actually had to give the drivers directions to where we wanted to go. So a test would be welcome, we imagine — hey, it works in London, where for more than 150 years, cabbies have been required to pass a grueling test called The Knowledge. (It takes would-be London drivers an average 34 months to prepare for The Knowledge; we hope nothin

London's Black Cabs Are an Inseparable Part of the City By Subhasis Chatterjee Like the Big Ben and the red double-decker buses, London’s black cabs are an inseparable part of the city. So much so that these taxis have attained a legendary stature hardly paralleled anywhere else in the world. Modernization, however, has seen to it that not all the black cabs in greater London remain black; a trendy, streamlined version has now replaced some of the old ones. Ever since the days of horse drawn carriages, the specifications of London's taxis have been regulated. In 1679, passenger safety concerns resulted in the development of Conditions of Fitness. These requirements, modified as and when necessary, are still strictly enforced by the Public Carriage Office, a division of the Metropolitan Police. The London taxi which lingers in most people’s memories is the Austin FX-4, which was introduced in 1959 and remained in production until 1997. A London taxi is subject t

ASIAN TAXI DRIVERS NEEDED FOR LONDON
2007-02-11 00:48:10
A series of roadshows to encourage people from Black, Asian and ethnic minorities to consider becoming licensed taxi drivers was launched by the Mayor of London. The roadshows, which are being hosted by Transport for London’s Public Carriage Office, are part of a long-term campaign to ensure that the cab trade is more representative of London’s diverse communities. Presently one in 20 existing taxi drivers is from Black, Asian and ethnic minorities, compared to nearly a third of London’s population. Only one per cent of current drivers are Asian and 2.4 per cent are Black. Mayor Ken Livingstone said: 'More people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds are applying to become black cab drivers, but at the current rate it will be 30 years before the trade is representative of London's communities. Taxi drivers are great ambassadors for London and I want the trade to reflect the diversity of the capital. This campaign is designed to encourage people

GPRS means there's no excuse to not go south of the river that time of night…  By Jo Best The PDA is making its way out of City boys' pockets and into black cabs, with the announcement that black-cab firm Xeta is giving all its taxi drivers an XDA II to help with booking jobs and locating customers' addresses. The PDAs will act as what "an in-cab job booking terminal", so even when a cabbie isn't in his taxi, he can still receive details of the next pick-up and information about where punters' addresses are. The XDA IIs won't just help the cabbies out, though. Xeta will be switching its taxis from the traditional Private Mobile Radio system to a mix of GPS and GPRS to help controllers find out where taxis are at any given time and locate the nearest black cab to a customer. The network switch will also mean that cab operators will be able to communicate with their drivers outside the capital. Geof Kaley, Xeta's MD, said taxi drive

Becoming a Taxi Driver
2007-02-11 00:41:26
As a licensed driver you can be a self employed business person with the freedom to work as and when you wish on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year. Alternatively, many licensed private hire drivers enjoy the benefits of being employed by a licensed operator. This flexibility affords the opportunity to have a worthwhile career to meet your own personal circumstances and requirements. By becoming either a taxi or private hire driver you can play a part in delivering safe, reliable and integrated transport to all those who live in, work in or visit London. The opportunity to have a career as a licensed driver in London is open to all and TfL is particularly keen to attract people who reflect the diversity of London’s population. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/pco/becoming/ Related EntriesMore Cabs And Vans Killing This Business Bus lanes, minicabs and all that ASIAN TAXI DRIVERS NEEDED FOR LONDON Flag Down a great Taxi Finance Deal What could this mean?

Callsign Magazine from DAC in London
2007-02-10 18:03:02
Hello to you wherever you are in the world, as the Editor of Call Sign Magazine , I'm delighted to welcome you to the on-line CS library. Call Sign - in various guises - has been around since 1964 and I am its fourth editor, following on from Joe Toff, Phil Emden and Gerald Craig. What my three predecessors would think about the magazine they cared for so passionately, whizzing around the world from keyboard to keyboard, heaven knows! However, each in their own way progressed the magazine a bit further and this is my bit - Call Sign International. We have been on-line since 1998 and they are the issues you can research on. Call Sign is not independent, neither does it claim to be. It is the house magazine of Europe's most advanced radio taxi company, Dial-a-Cab. If you are not a DaC driver - for whom this site is aimed as a library facility - but you have been to London, you could not fail to notice the logo that adorns every one of our 2,200 taxis. As a reminder, you can see

I’ve been sent this forward today. 1. You say "the City" and expect everyone to know which one. 2. You have never been to The Tower or Madame Tussauds but love Brighton. 3. You can get into a four-hour argument about how to get from Shepherds Bush to Elephant & Castle at 3:30 on the Friday before a long weekend, but can't find Dorset on a map. 4. Hookers and the homeless are invisible. 5. You step over people who collapse on the Tube. 6. You believe that being able to swear at people in their own language makes you multilingual. 7. You've considered stabbing someone. 8. Your door has more than three locks. 9. You consider eye contact an act of overt aggression. 10. You call an 8' x 10' plot of patchy grass a garden. 11. You consider Essex the "countryside". 12. You think Hyde Park is "nature". 13. You're paying £1,200 a month for a studio the size of a walk-in wardrobe and you think it's a "bargain".

Black cab fares go up for eighth time under Ken
2007-02-20 16:17:21
Black cabs fares are set to increase again Taxi fares are set to rise again, taking the average cost of hailing a black cab above £10.50. Journey prices will increase by 3.2 per cent on 14 April, the eighth time they have gone up since Ken Livingstone became mayor seven years ago. This means a typical fare - averaged out across day, night and weekend rates - will jump 32p from £10.25 to £10.57. Passengers travelling between 10pm and 6am - when the fares are most expensive - can expect to pay just under £13, up about 40p on the current £12.57 night-time average. Cab fares are reviewed annually by Transport for London. The intention is to maintain the earnings - in line with cost of living inflation - of the capital's 24,678 cabbies once the cost of running a car is taken into account. The minimum fare remains at £2.20, which includes a 20p environmental charge, which was introduced three years ago to encourage drivers to modernise their vehi

Barclaycard displays wave-and-pay in cab

Barclaycard is continuing its campaign against pocket change with a mock-up of a wave-and-pay taxi terminal, on display at the Business Travel Show in London. The concept cab, from London taxi firm Computer Cabs, let show attendees see how the contactless payment system could work and what potential uses the mobile terminals could have ahead of their expected release later this year. The contactless system, which was originally announced in December, will allow customers to pay for transactions under £10 by simply waving their Visa cards in front of a reader - similar to Transport for London's Oyster card system, which will also be built into the cards. Unlike Oyster, which is a closed prepay network, the wave-and-pay system will use the same payment network as chip-and-pin, without the time-consuming button pressing and waiting for authorisation. "It works exactly the same as a credit card, but rather than dipping the card in and entering a pin, you just wave it,&q

Taxi Fares Rise By 3.1pc
2007-02-20 16:14:13
Taxi fairs in London are to rise by 3.1%, less than the rate of inflation, it was announced yesterday. The new fares will come into effect on Saturday, 14 April 2007 and follow consultation by the Public Carriage Office with the taxi trade and others including London Travelwatch. The rise is intended to take into account increases in taxi operating costs and increases in national average earnings. Ed Thompson, Director of Taxi and Private Hire at the PCO, said: "These new taxi fare levels take into account the growing costs of running a black cab. Taxi drivers are self employed, meaning they earn less if operating costs increase" Mr Thompson said the increase would mean "London taxis continue to offer good value for money." http://www.mayorwatch.co.uk/article.php?article_id=589 Related EntriesBlack cab fares go up for eighth time under Ken Black cab fare rise 'unfair' ASIAN TAXI DRIVERS NEEDED FOR LONDON Guide to London Taxis Becoming a driver

Doing the knowledge
2007-02-20 16:13:29
I've often thought it would be great to do The Knowledge. For those not in the know (or without the knowledge), it's the exam that London taxi drivers must undertake to qualify to drive a black cab. It's basically a comprehensive test of someone's knowledge of streets within a certain (rather large) radius of Trafalgar Square. Most of the prospective cabbies learn the Knowledge while riding around London on a scooter, generally on a Sunday with an A-Z map strapped to the handlebars. I often think it would be a much more impressive task to do it purely from the A-Z map, without any reference to the physical streets. I wonder if anyone's ever done that. I wonder if I should try. It would be quite a feat.  http://www.osirra.com/post/1/871   Related EntriesGuide to London Taxis Council to consider revised taxi ordinance ASIAN TAXI DRIVERS NEEDED FOR LONDON Callsign Magazine from DAC in London Black cab drivers opt for O2 XDAs

Arriving at King’s Cross recently carrying a heavy suitcase I went to the black cab rank. “Lewisham, please”. “F*** off !” the driver replied (albeit in a jocular way). The next one also refused. Polluting London taxi adds to air woes
2007-02-21 19:45:08
I have just browsed the online edition of the TC. I read the articles on the throne speech and then the article about a 1970s London taxi, complete with “purring” four-cylinder diesel engine (that would be a first), being brought to Victoria. Do we really need any more filthy, archaic vehicles in town? We already have a host of old buses and coaches to fill the air with noxious fumes. I love the idea of having period vehicles, but why can’t they be upgraded to be cleaner? If they can’t, then I say it’s not worth it. UK green cab service expands Prius coverage
2007-02-23 12:00:19
UK Minicab firm greentomotacars has started a pilot program to expand into the West London area with its Prius fleet. The service, which currently uses five of the well-known hybrids, plans to increase its numbers to fifty when they extend service across all of London by the end of June. Even using hybrids is not enough for greentomatocars, since even hybrids release CO2. The firm also plants trees and engages in other "eco-projects" to minimize its vehicles' impact on the environment. And while the service has considered all-electric vehicles, they are currently not viable according to founder Tom Pakenham. http://www.autoblog.com/2006/04/10/environment-conscious-cab-service-expands-prius-coverage/   Related EntriesLondon Black Cab.Com. Unlicensed cabbie kept on road
2007-02-23 11:58:43
A TAXI driver for a Silloth firm will not be banned from the roads, despite having 12 points on his licence and driving without the right licence or insurance. Robert Tinnion, who drove for Select Cabs, was prosecuted by Allerdale council after an anonymous tip-off. He appeared at Keswick and West Allerdale Magistrates Court yesterday and admitted driving a taxi without a hackney licence and having no insurance. But magistrates chose not to ban him because it would cause him “exceptional hardship.” Tinnion, 45, of Frizington Road, Frizington was given six penalty points and fined £100 for each of the two dates he drove a hackney carriage for Select Cabs without insurance on April 24 and 25, 2006. There were no separate penalties for the two charges of driving the hackney carriage while unlicensed. Select Cabs owner, Stanley Glover, 56, of Pica Cottages, Pica, pleaded guilty in court last September to charges of aiding and abetting Tinnion to drive a hackney carriage

From the phrases and names written on the panels of the white hackney cabs it is believed the graffiti was the work of a gang from the estate. Seven taxis were vandalised while they were parked outside their owners homes in Bath Road, Queen's Road, King's Road and Warwick Road between midnight on Sunday and 9am on Monday morning. The phrases included the signature Jonjo, the racist slur 'Paki scum', four letter swearwords and the slogan Bretch Hill Army. I guess I’m lucky that the tyre never burst on the motorway at 70mph, then I would have been in trouble. I have to go to the garage tomorrow to part with another wad of cash. I haven’t paid the cab for three weeks so I think they must be anxious for the rent although to this day they’ve never rung me to make sure I haven’t died or something. Tonight was Valentines Night and all the couples were out in force. The floor of the cab was full of rose petals by the end of the shift. Most couples were all loved up but one guy said something that earned him a slap round the back of the head from his other half and I couldn’t help laughing. The Brit Awards were also on tonight at Earls Court. The traffic was murder but there was plenty of work. Some of you may know the song “It’s The Final Countdown” by the group Eu
