Minicab driver’s fine fury 2007-03-10 12:04:32 A MINICAB driver from Tottenham has criticised parking officials after he was given an £80 ticket for stopping in a taxi rank.
Arous Mourad, 45, of Station Crescent, says he stopped on the Palmers Green rank to pick up a mother and her three children and insists mini cab drivers should be allowed to work unhindered.
He said: “We provide a good service. If I don’t have a customer, why would I stop there. If they don’t let us work we will give up mini-cabbing.”
A spokeswoman for Enfield Council said: “Current legislation makes it clear that taxi ranks are for licensed taxi drivers - not minicabs which are not allowed to ply for trade on the highway.
“This minicab was captured on CCTV facing the wrong way and there is no evidence of picking up passengers. Mr Mourad is within his rights to appeal.

London Cabbies 'will be unable to work' 2007-03-09 15:51:08 Taxi drivers must get their cabs licensed in order to operate legally
London taxi drivers have protested over licensing changes which they say will prevent 800 drivers working for a week.
Cabs are licensed by the Public Carriage Office (PCO) but private firm SGS takes over licensing from April.
A gap in the service and a licensing backlog will leave 800 cab drivers unable to work for a week, the London Cab Drivers Club (LCDC) union claimed.
Drivers demonstrated at City Hall, central London. Transport for London (TfL) called their fears "unfounded".
The PCO will license its last vehicle a week before SGS takes over responsibility for licensing on 2 April.
"That means 800 cab drivers will be out of work for a week," LCDC chair Alan Fleming said.
"It's a very serious situation. When you are a self-employed person such as a cab driver you have just got to work every day."

Romford’s marshalled taxi rank 2007-03-14 17:43:46 A NEW marshalled taxi rank is in operation on Romford’s Eastern Road.
The rank will be in operation on Friday and Saturday nights between 10.30pm and 3.30am, when marshals will be on hand to organise passenger and taxi queues, and provide reassurance for people who are waiting.
This scheme is part of the Mayor’s Safer Travel at Night campaign, an ongoing programme involving the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police.
Late night marshalled taxi ranks currently operate in Beckenham, Bromley, Cranbourn Street (opposite Leicester Square), Liverpool Street station, Queen Victoria Street (near Bank station) and Kingston.
The Public Carriage Office has been working with the London Borough of Havering and the local police to improve taxi arrangements late at night in Romford town centre and introduce this scheme.

Hablas Español? 2007-03-14 17:40:47 My “Supermechanic” brother in law recently took delivery of his brand new TX4. He brought it round so that I could take it for a spin and I was very impressed with the power in the new engine. It’s also supposed to have the best suspension these cabs have ever had but I felt that after a few weeks or months of driving over our pot-hole-ridden roads it would end up as shagged as all the other cabs out there. I hope I’m proved wrong. I think I’ll just content myself with renting for the moment and who knows I may try being an owner again in a few years.
I took my cab to the garage on Friday as the rent was due (times three). It broke my heart parting with six hundred quid but that’s my fault for letting it build up to that amount. While I was there I got them to change a few bulbs that had blown in the dashboard. The mechanic tried to fob me off because it was a “dashboard out” job but a quiet word with the owner, who was lurking around kee Read more:Hablas
London taxi ride is among the best 2007-03-14 17:39:11 A trip in a London taxi through the heart of London is among the top ten best cab journeys in the world, according to a leading international travel guide.
www.ForbesTraveller.com has ranked a trip in a black cab from Marble Arch to the London Eye, via Piccadilly Circus and Whitehall, in the top ten anywhere.
The guide – renowned across the world as an invaluable companion for the traveller – says passengers need not worry about the driver getting lost because of the unique Knowledge that London taxi drivers have to pass.
It is another feather in the cap of the capital’s drivers and the iconic cab that is instantly recognisable the world over.
Matthew Cheyne, Sales and Marketing Director of LTI Vehicles, which manufacturers the London-style taxis, said: “Once again, London taxis are being recognised internationally as the best.
“Some of the other journeys on the list are breath-taking, including boat taxis in Venice and around the Arc de Triomphe in
A Note Of Caution: I Know Where You Live 2007-03-17 10:10:20 Sadly, the £10 note in my wallet is a forgery. I know it’s a forgery because the sociopathic lesbian in Oddbins said so – and she’s never wrong, ever, particularly when it comes to deconstructing my preferred brand of oaky Chilean red. Furthermore, I understand that English currency typically features a portrait of the Queen, and not Leo Sayer.
Nevertheless, I’m confident my cab driver doesn’t possess a forensic eye for detail. Sure enough, he drops me at my front door and accepts the note without question.
‘What an idiot,’ I chuckle, stepping inside.
About three minutes later, the doorbell rings.

Formula One driver Takuma Sato arrived at the Albert Park Grand Prix racetrack this morning driving a slightly more unique vehicle than he's used to - a vintage hackney Virgin Atlantic London taxi.
Sato will be building upon his relationship with his personal sponsor Virgin Atlantic by using the red Austin A1 1976 London taxi as his personal vehicle throughout the Melbourne Grand Prix weekend promoting Virgin Atlantic's daily flights from both Australia and Japan to London.
Takuma Sato has a personal sponsorship arrangement with Virgin Atlantic out of Tokyo, and has long heralded the fun, quality and innovation associated with the airline. Speaking on why he decided to commandeer the London taxi to Albert Park, Takuma Sato stated: "When I heard Virgin Atlantic had their famous old London taxi in Melbourne, I thought it would be a great opportunity to experience a car I hadn't driven before. Monthly sales of the new TX4 taxi, launched by manufacturer LTI Vehicles last October, are expected to top 400 for the first time in March.
The widespread praise for the latest incarnation of the iconic London-style taxi, which retains the distinctive black cab shape, has led to a leap in demand from drivers wanting an 07-plated vehicle.
Sales since the launch have hit record levels for the Coventry-based firm, the largest British-owned vehicle manufacturer, which has increased production levels to cope with demand
The TX4 boasts a raft of new features, including a cleaner, Euro IV compliant VM engine, anti-lock brakes as standard and improved suspension for a smoother ride.

Touched or what? 2007-03-23 14:37:41 The day time traffic has been pretty bad this last week and I find my stress levels are much higher as people are very impatient and expect there to be a short cut for every eventuality. I told several passengers that if they weren’t happy being stuck in traffic that they could always get out and walk. One stroppy git took me up on that but thought I meant he didn’t have to pay the £6 on the meter. It almost came to blows but he backed down. Wise move.
One thing about days is that you can eat whatever you want as everythings open. I went to Alexanders Fish and Chip shop behind Finsbury Square yesterday and had a beef and mushroom pastie and chips with a sausage thrown in for good measure. It's hard to explain the difference between this chippy and the countless others around town. Try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed. I met with two of my cabbie mates today for breakfast. Taxis to broadcast digital radio 2007-04-06 11:52:54 LONDON - Taxis will now feature digital radio stations broadcast direct to the passenger compartment and wireless access that business users can use through the cab via their own laptops.
KBH Transport Media, the rail and taxi outdoor contractor, has introduced these two new services, giving radio broadcast stations and other brands the opportunity to access people on the move. The service that broadcasts digital radio stations direct to the area of the cab where the passenger sits, regardless of what the driver is listening to, will allow radio stations to be preset within the cab. The blue coin holder is a lot smaller but this is also an advantage as it can be put in your money bag or pocket. The coins can be removed from the top or bottom of the dispenser which is a great idea!

Happy Easter 2007-04-18 19:12:46 One problem I did have in the first shift was when a couple of Irish ladies asked to be taken to the Montagu(e) Hotel in Montagu(e) Place. I had already decided in my mind that they wanted the Montagu(e) something or other Hotel near the British Museum. Unbeknownst (is that correct grammar) to me a new Montagu (no e) Hotel had opened closer to the pickup point which was Paddington. So theres two Montagu(e) Places in London albeit spelt slightly differently and at least two Hotels with the word Montagu(e) in them. Needless to say I went to the wrong one and had to knock £8 off the fare. They were really nice about it though and I still got a whole 20p tip out of it!!
I went home around 4.15 pm to feed the hoard and to watch out for my teams result on TV.
The second shift started with a small blunder on my part. I was enjoying a tune (Aerosmith) and a latte bought from Starbucks in Randolph Avenue when a man stuck his head in the window and asked if I would take him to Sutherland A Read more:Happy

The vehicle has been out on the road, often late at night, since January and the PCO have carried out over 150 vehicle inspections. The work of the compliance team will mainly be intelligence-led tackling issues such as illegal plying for hire by drivers and over-ranking at taxi ranks.

New London black cab sales soar 2007-04-18 19:10:27 Production at Coventry has been increased to meet demand.
Black cab firm London Taxis International (LTI) have reported a big increase in sales of their new model.
Figures from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show 469 new TX4 taxis were sold in March, 37% more than the previous year.
The Coventry firm has seen record UK sales in each of the five months since the TX4 was launched.
So far this year it has sold 940 TX4 taxis, a 44% increase over the same period last year.
Matthew Cheyne, from LTI, said: "To meet this demand we have increased our production rate at our Coventry factory.
"The growth in sales is being driven by owners recommending the new TX4 to their fellow cabbies as well as positive feedback from passengers to taxi drivers, not just in London but throughout the UK."
The new TX4 model has been fitted with a cleaner Euro IV compliant diesel engine which runs on 5% Bio-Diesel fuel-mix.

Remember When London Cabs Were Always Black? 2007-04-18 19:07:02 Anyone who's been to Britain (and even many who haven't, poor souls) will recognise a London taxi at a glance. Aside from the distinctive shape they're most often black. Except when they're pink. A London-based customer, testing "LTI Vehicle's" claim that it will make cabs in any color, had one condition when ordering his new taxi - it must be in candyfloss pink. LTI's Steve Everton said: "We laughed when we first got the order but immediately got to work mixing the colours. We're really pleased with the final result and it's created quite a stir in the factory. I dare say it will create a stir on the streets of London as well." No word on why the customer requested pink except, perhaps, to flatter his female riders or, more likely, to stand out on crowded Regent Street.

London cab drivers get free show tickets 2007-04-18 19:05:56 Tourists looking for inside info on Britain's West End theaters do not need to go any further than the nearest taxicab.
Cab drivers in London are given free tickets to West End shows, the Sunday Telegraph reported.
The theaters have been giving away thousands of show tickets, including tickets to "Billy Elliot," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Guys and Dolls" to taxi drivers in order to fill houses and to spread positive word of mouth.
Cab companies in London claim to have been offered free tickets by virtually every theater in the West End.
David Prattley, the manager at the Shaftesbury theater, said he was "very grateful" for the cab drivers pulling in crowds through word of mouth.
"If you are bringing a big show into the West End and you are hoping to hang around for about five or six years it makes sense to hand out a couple of hundred tickets to taxi drivers," he said. "They have tourists in their taxis every day and are a

New London Taxi Introduced 2007-04-18 19:04:05 London taxis are becoming environmentally friendly. The traditional London black taxi is made by Manganese Bronze. The company has launched the new TX4 model. The new taxi meets European Union pollution standards. That is good news for London taxi drivers. There are 17,000 taxis that do not meet these standards.
But it is also good news for Manganese Bronze. The company expects to sell a lot more cars. And not just in London. The company has just signed an agreement with a Chinese manufacturer. This means 20,000 cars will be sold to hotels and taxi companies in Shanghai. There are 23,000 black cabs in London. The first taxi appeared in London in 1662.
