Hedge Funds Risk Management
2008-03-08 15:05:19
Hedge Funds Risk Management A Short Review of Hedge Fund Risk ManagementWhen trying to maximize absolute returns, the importance of assessing and mitigating risk shouldn't be underestimated. Some memorable examples like LTCM and Tiger Fund not only show how heavy losses can be for some participants of the hedge fund industry, but also reinforce the perception that a good record of high absolute returns can mean absolutely nothing in an environment of improperly managed risk. The most important lesson in terms of Hedge Fund Risk Management comes from the improper name of this kind of alternative investment: The idea that all systematic risks are diversified away is not applicable here, with the Hedge Fund returns, in reality, representing a combination of superior management of market ine

Hedge Funds Distressed Debt Securities
2008-03-08 10:25:02
Hedge Funds & Distressed DebtHedge Funds & Distressed Debt Securities A company on the verge of declaring bankruptcy doesn’t sound like a great investment opportunity, does it? Hedge fund portfolio managers who know the ins and outs of distressed securities investing can make out money from the decimated portfolios. The idea is to purchase distressed securities at deep discounts in anticipation that the investment will be worth much more after a turnaround or change in market conditions. It has been noticed that in the recent years, many hedge funds have invested in distressed debt market securities. Much of the distressed debts consist of commercial and real estate loans originally made by companies, banks and other financial institutions, which are now in default, under ban

Hedge Fund Investing 7 Tips for Successful Hedge Fund InvestingI just read an article a couple days ago that sounded like a similar one of mine you might have read called "How to Invest in Hedge Funds." This article was by Scott Frush and it covers the seven strategies for successful hedge fund investing. Here is his 7 tips for investing in hedge funds. None of the tips below are financial advice from myself or from the author of the article that I am summarizing below. 1. Do Your HomeworkSince hedge funds are not regulated by the SEC or government, it's up to you to research and evaluate a hedge fund before investing in it.2. Invest In Proven ManagersAlthough investing in a manager with an impressive past performance will not guarantee the same results, it is a good rule of thumb to fol

Hedge Fund Speculation
2008-03-05 18:23:48
Hedge Fund SpeculationAre Hedge Funds Becoming More Speculative? Here is a question I recently received: "I recently heard that Hedge Funds have become so common of a financial instrument for institutions that they might not be providing the desired speculation. So the next generation of hedge funds must have to be more speculative, like a spec fund."There are a of hedge fund managers in the industry now, over 15,000. This means that average returns will fall a bit and the quality of managers overall will have a lower mean...but I do not think it forces most hedge fund managers to be more speculative, in fact I think it has the opposite effect. There is so much competition now among hedge funds that institutional investors and the ultra-wealthy are becoming more picky wanting to work with

Largest Hedge Funds

Largest Hedge Funds The largest 2.3% hedge funds make up almost 50% of total hedge fund assetsA recent article by the FT noted that the top 350 hedge funds make up almost half of the $2 Trillion hedge fund industry. With 15,000 hedge funds in existence this means that 2.3% of all hedge funds make up almost 50% of total assets in hedge fund investments. At the same time almost 40% of all hedge funds have under $25 Million under management.Meredith Jones, managing director, said the slowdown in launches was a sign of the industry maturing. "In addition, the decrease in new fund launches reflects the asset flow trends in the industry since, in many cases, assets flow to larger established hedge funds and funds of funds, which is somewhat of a deterrent for new entrants into the marketplace."De

Hurdle Rates Definition What is a Hurdle Rate?
2008-02-28 19:48:56
Hurdle Rate Definition Hurdle Rate Definition: The minimum return necessary for a hedge fund manager to start collecting incentive fees. The hurdle is usually tied to a benchmark rate such as Libor or the one-year Treasury bill rate plus a spread. If, for example, the manager sets a hurdle rate equal to 5%, and the fund returns 15%, incentive fees would only apply to the 10% above the hurdle rate.Definition courtesy of HedgeCoAdditional Outside Hurdle Rate Resources:Hedge Fund Management and Performance Fees White PaperA Hedge Fund Primer (Includes details on Hurdle Rates )Hedge Fund Overview - Includes Hurdle Rate Discussion- RichardSubscribe To this Blog via Email | Or RSSInternal Articles Related to "Definition of Hurdle Rate":1. New Hedge Funds: Hedge Fund Startups
2008-02-20 15:48:41
New Hedge Funds There are somewhere between 15,000 and 19,000 hedge funds now in existence. Hundreds of new hedge funds are started each year and at least 10,000 are large enough to officially be noted within major databases and formal tracking systems."The hedge fund industry remains a very exciting space, and professionals that want to be in an autonomous environment are still very attracted to hedge funds," says Marc Bender, chief operating officer of EFX Capital.HFR data indicates that over 900 hedge funds were launched in 2007 alone while around 500 were liquidated. IDD notes that "This compares to 1,518 new funds in 2006 with 717 liquidations, and 2,073 launches and 848 liquidations in 2005, a record year. The pool of hedge funds in the almost-$2 trillion industry is around 10,000.""T

Institutional Investors Affected by Microsofts Bid for Yahoo

MSFT > YHOOInstitutional Investors Affected by Microsofts Bid for Yahoo I did an interview today with an editor from the E-Commerce Times, who was writing up a piece on how some institutional investors including hedge funds could be hurt by an ongoing battle by Microsoft to take over Yahoo. I never like to talk about individual securities within my hedge fund blog but this case the conversation related more to the realities of some arbitrage investment strategies than anything else. Before you build large positions within two leaders within an industry it is routine to consider any inter-firm or sector risk created by your choice of securities. "Microsoft may have confidence that some number of institutional shareholders with a stake in Yahoo want the bid to succeed but not at a higher pric

While hedge funds are sometimes define using the works "risky" and "highly leveraged" many are now making sure their prime brokerage business partners have enough cash on hand to do their job.“It is quite paradoxical,” said Angelos Metaxa, a director of CM Advisors, a $3bn [€2.05bn] Geneva-based fund of hedge funds. “In August, everyone was worried about a hedge fund blowing up, but now they are worried about a bank blowing up and taking a few hedge funds with it.”Here is the full article on this.- RichardSubscribe To this Blog via Email | Or RSSRelated Articles:1. Hedge Fund Performance Hedge Fund Performance - Finance SectorHedge funds in the finance sector have performed dismally as one of only two hedge fund benchmarks to have a negative performance. A recent report by Hedge Fund Net shows that although finance sector hedge funds have not shown great numbers when compared to other hedge funds, they have “outperformed their closest benchmark by more percentage points than any other equity related hedge fund sector in the last twelve months.” Also, if you take into consideration the harsh conditions that exist in the finance sector—the housing bubble and the looming economic recession—these hedge funds have performed relatively well. The HFN data demonstrates that finance sector hedge funds have showed signs of improvement.
