Find a world that others cannot see. Be careful what you wish for... you just might get it. The night sky twinkles as the dancer is wishing upon a star. The silhouette of the dancer glows against the backdrop of a fantastic purple sky. St. Michael's Mount is a enchanting medieval castle and church perched upon a craggy island in Cornwall, England. The small isle has multiple entrances depending on the tide. One can climb the ancient cobbled and uneven granite causeway when the tide is low. Otherwise, the castle is reachable by boat at high tide. This is actually a photo I took on a foggy day during our trip to the United Kindgom. I imagine this place is pretty eerie on a stormy night. Illustration Friday: Theory
2008-02-18 16:54:58
I decided to cut up a crusty old marker comp and create a brand new collage. I've been sharing my old work with a portfolio class at my old high school. I've come to realize that somehow, we've allowed the perception that our technology tools drive our design process and are mostly responsible for the results. While I celebrate the demise of comprehensives and press type, it is still my theory that a good graphic designer should have some of these basic skills and competencies before they attempt to gain entry level employment. Identify steps in the psychological model of the creative process (analysis, incubation, inspiration, verification)Explain major methods of creativity (brainstorming, free association, etc.)Identify basic principles of design (unity, contrast, proportion, etc.)Ident

I Love You This Much Award!
2008-02-18 13:37:38
Wow! Two of the most kind-hearted ladies, Emila Yusof and Studio Lolo, awarded me with some much needed love. Emila originally created the "I Love You This Much Award " to spread and promote love in conjuction with Valentine’s Day. I'd like to pass this along to a new blogger you may not have heard of yet. To my sister, Nicole, thank you for the countless ways in which you inspire me! Now if only we could get Jill to participate...You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

Golden Age Comic Book Resin Bracelet
2008-02-10 10:07:44
My husband has tons of comics! So, I made this funky bracelet featuring vintage art from the golden age of comic books. Teenage romance comics and good girl art are drawn in the pin up tradition in the 1940s. The sterling silver bezels were used to mimic the look of vintage typewriter keys. Printed with archival materials, the images were then protected by a clear resin. Tags: jewelryYou can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

In Édouard Manet's painting, 'Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère,' the mirror is not a faithful reflection of the barmaid. The question is not so much "is it a mirror?", but why did Manet choose to present us with a logically impossible reflection? The original painting is such an iconic masterpiece is that it always invokes passionate debate. This is a pencil sketch of the barmaid over the top of a collage of vector shapes in Adobe Photoshop.Technorati Tags: art, Illustration You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

Well, Hello-Cooper!
2008-01-29 11:34:03
After I successfully convinced my sister that she was missing all the fun if she didn't have a blog or her own fairytale illustration, she allowed me to design a custom layout for my portfolio. I chose a simple 2-column template in order to focus primarily on the header illustration and the content. Yes, Lady Nelaine is Nicole's alter ego. :)You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

Tales & Legends: Sir Foster & Lady Nelaine
2008-01-29 11:31:39
Sir Foster , one of the great heroes in the Arthurian legend, left his castle in Cardueil, with only a sword, lance and shield. Travelling through the forest, he soon became lost when the light began to fade. In the clearing near the road, he noticed a beautiful maiden. He exchanged greetings with Lady Nelaine, who offered him the hospitality of her castle if he would accompany her through the woods in the darkness. This is a commissioned illustration done in Adobe Photoshop. You can see the original sketches below that were done with pencil, ink, and copic markers in the ruled Moleskine. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

The legend of Mount Rushmore says that Gutzon Borglum worked by himself to carve the faces of four American presidents. Rushmore's creator, was indeed a noted sculptor, but he did not work alone: a large crew of artisans did the actual face carving, working from a model Borglum created. Here's another tall tale. According to the Chuck Norris fact generator, they wanted to put Chuck Norris on Mt. Rushmore, but the granite wasn't tough enough for his beard. hee! hee! Antique Optical Lens - Gilleaindreas
2008-01-19 17:44:11
I made another one of my illustrations called "Gilleaindreas" into a necklace on etsy. This is a vintage optical lens from an old optometrist’s trial lens sets, circa early 1900’s. The lens is gold rimmed. The illustration is printed on archival paper and then protected on the back by a durable glass-like resin to create a hard lustrous finish. Comes with a leather cord and is finished with a silver lobster claw clasp. Dimensions: approximately 16" long.cooperkk.etsy.comYou can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

The name Blair signifies "a cleared plain". There is a small village called the Blair near Lochard in Fifeshire, Scotland. It signifies a spot where a battle was fought between the Romans and the Caledonians, A.D. 83. This is a plain pencil sketch in a ruled Moleskine. Illustration Friday: Stitch

This acrylic painting is a visual expression of my musical experience of the "Rite of Spring". Synesthesia is a dual sensory experience. An impact on one of the senses causes a simultaneous response from another sense, as a visual response from a sound. Color and tone are the essence of painting as pitch and rhythm are of music. I stitched this musical painting together using four hot press boards under a black matte board. The "Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinksy is a series of episodes depicting a wild pagan spring ritual. Wise elders are seated in a circle and are observing the dance before the death of the girl whom they are offering as a sacrifice to the god of Spring in order to gain his benevolence. Whiteboard Art
2008-01-11 16:19:21
I heart my office whiteboard birthday card! Several people have added their own little details to it. I have no idea who the guy is, but I love the mutton chops, greasy hair leisure suit and elbow patches. Next to it is the start of a random eharmony list and a bumper sticker saying from a truck parked on the courthouse square in good 'ol Bloomington, Indiana. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS feed.

Hey Mr. Designer! Have You Ever Looked at Another Website? Really... Are You Sure About That?
2008-01-09 12:05:00
I'm a roll today. Stand by...I don't understand how it's possible to create websites that look like the designer has never seen another website out there on the internet...ever. Here are a few things that you need to ask yourself: 1. Have you ever heard the words "strategy", "research" or "planning"? Or do you rely on software tools to help you design? Just because you can use Dreamweaver and Flash tools, it doesn't make you a web designer. These are simply tools. For example, people don't usually get overly excited about the brand of tools you used to create an illustration or painting. They care more about how your artwork looks, the concept behind it and whether it moves them emotionally. If you don't know the first thing about designing a website that follows usability standards or cre

It's Official!
2008-01-06 19:43:43
I'm officially too old and feeble to blow out my own candles, so Liam graciously stepped in to help. My husband and family arranged for a surprise birthday party for the big 4-0 last night!!!!!! PS. The cops showed up twice. They only showed up once on my 21st birthday. I'm serious... just ask Judy. She's the one hiding in the background in the pink shirt :) Ok, ok, so it was because there was a hit and run accident in front of the house. Quite a difference 20 years makes, huh? Ailbhe, in Gaelic, means "white" or "brightness". In my mind, it's the perfect name for a girl who didn't make it to 100% opacity in Photoshop. Halcyon - Moleskine Illustration

Mosaic Showcase

I've been looking for an easy way to showcase work that takes SEO into account. While the mosaic part is simple to put together, it still takes time to enter all the links. And unless you tear apart the mosaic, there are no links on the photos. If anyone knows of another tool besides Lightbox JS and this Mosaic creator I found on Flickr, I'd like to hear your thoughts. 1. The Little Land, 2. Gilleaindreas, 3. Murran, 4. Human Tailgaters. There's nothing more annoying than waiting in line at Disney World for two hours with people who insist on standing so close that I feel them breathing on the back of my neck the whole time. These are the same people who bump me with their shopping cart in the checkout lane at the grocery store. But, maybe I am just as annoying because I always turn around and ask them if they need to get one space in front of me. Nobody has ever taken me up on the offer yet. I love asking that question because they always look a little shocked and immediately move back to give me my personal space. I mean, really, how much time are they saving by standing on my heels? As you can guess, this is a fresh, quick sketch from our vacation... in Disney World. You can follow any responses to this
