Another Snow Day 2008-03-04 20:01:31 Today school was canceled due to inclement weather. When the call came through at 5:45am, I (dad) could hardly believe they were going to close school. I looked out my window and didn't see a single snow flake on the ground.
I went to work, and about 9:30am, the snow really started to fall hard. By noon, we had over 4 inches of snow on the ground, and by the end of the day we had over 6 inches of snow!
When I got home from work, we took Emmett outside and let him play in the snow for a bit. He liked walking around in it feeling it crunch beneath his feet.
He didn't like it though, when we picked him up and set him down into the really deep snow. He sank down past his knees and he couldn't walk very well.
Emmett And The Blender 2008-02-26 19:56:40 For an after dinner treat, we made fruit smoothies in the blender.
When the smoothies ran out- Emmett
took interest in the big red button on the blender. Just sitting there. Not being pressed.
He insisted upon being held next to the blender, so I let him push the button a few times, with the top and blades out.
Check out the video of Emmett playing with the blender Read more: Blender
How Many Calories Are In A Crayola Marker? 2008-02-26 19:44:16 Monday Emmett wasn't feeling quite like himself, so he got to stay home today with Grandma Bell while mom and dad went to work.
Grandma surprised Emmett by bringing him McDonald's pancakes for breakfast.
When he was done eating breakfast, he grabbed a brown Crayola
marker from the kitchen table, and began coloring on a piece of paper. When he got tired of coloring on the paper, he began coloring on his pancakes.
Later in the day, Emmett got to use his Crayola marker again, and he got caught sticking the marker into his mouth. By the time we could get to him, he had completely bitten the tip of the marker off, and was sucking on it in his mouth.
No harm done...except a very brown colored tongue for the rest of the afternoon. Read more: Calories
What Do You Do On A Snow Day? 2008-02-21 11:25:05 Today the weather in St. Louis is very cold. It's only 20*F so far this morning, and there is freezing rain falling from the sky!
The school district called and canceled school for today, which means that mom and dad get to stay home and play with Emmett today.
What would you do with a whole day off?
Emmett apparently had his own ideas!
By 11am he went and got his stuffed monkey and blanket, and stood next to the rocking chair until I lifted him up into it. He only lasted 5 more minutes and then he was out.
Aren't Kids Supposed To Hate These? 2008-02-19 23:52:28 Emmett has had a runny nose with a cough for the past week and every 15 minutes he needs his nose wiped.
I thought we might try one of those nose suction bulbs to help him remove some of his runny nose for him. I vividly remember not liking this device as a kid, and totally expected Emmett to have the same reaction.
To my surprise, when I put the bulb back in his dresser, he walked over to his room and said "up" until I came in and lifted him up to get the bulb back down.
He just wanted to sit in mom's lap and play with it some more. To him it was just another toy.
Is Twisting Oreos Learned or Natural 2008-02-13 18:31:03 After Emmett ate his dinner tonight, we gave him a couple of oreos for dessert.
While watching him eat his oreos, I began to wonder if twisting oreos apart and eating the icing out of the middle first was something you learned by watching someone else eat oreos, or it you're naturally born with the urge to twist them apart this way.
After watching Emmett twist two open and eating the icing first, I decided it must be a natural instinct.

Boat and Sports Show 2008-02-10 17:31:55 Today Emmett and I met up with Grandpa and Grandma Beeson, Uncle Kevin and Aunt Kimberley to head downtown for the 54th annual Boat and Sports
Show.
Once we got inside out of the cold, Emmett was just amazed at how much there was to see!
First we went and visited the Jet Skis. A very nice sales lady let Emmett
sit on top of a brand new Jet Ski and have his picture taken.
Next we went over into the vendor area and saw a vendor about wild game hunts. At his vendor area he had several mounted deer and animals. Emmett spotted them from across the room, and pointed us in the direction of them. So we went over.
After we stood and admired the deer for a bit, we went to the opposite side of the convention center and saw the final rounds of the DockDogs compentition. The competition had r
Flashlight In The Tub? 2008-02-07 11:19:27 Last night Emmett was taking his bath for the night, when I (dad) came through and dropped a mini-mag flashlight into the tub with him. It was turned on, and made the soap bubbles in the tub look really neat.
Emmett just looked up at me from inside the tub and gave me a look like "Are you serious? You can't put my flashlight in the tub!"
He picked it up, shook the water off of it, and dropped it on the floor outside the tub.
It took a few times of me putting it back into the tub for him to realize it was OK to have it in the tub with him. Once he knew it was OK, he had a blast playing with the light under the soap bubbles! Read more: Flashlight
New Guest Book Features 2008-02-07 11:12:59 Over the past few days we've made some changes to Emmett's website.
In addition to changing the theme to Sock Monkeys (Emmett's current favorite toy) we've added more functionality to the guest book page.
The guest book has been re-designed and made to load faster, and to allow you to change your font, size, colors, links etc., of your post.

Visiting the St. Louis Zoo 2008-01-30 23:05:16 Last weekend while the weather was good we took Emmett to the St. Louis
Zoo
. Emmett had been before, but he was a few months younger and only interested in "people watching".
This time he was old enough to focus on the animals and show interest in them.
We saw things like Penguins, the zoo train, laughing hyenas, penguins, and elephants. But Emmett refered to them all as ducks. :)
Mom's Fresh Chocolate Chip Cookies 2008-03-10 22:05:14 Sometimes after dinner mom will make Emmett and his dad a fresh batch of cookies.

atch. How to Decode Your Child 2008-03-10 22:03:16 Emmett used to say "up" a lot. He'd walk over to you when you were working in the kitchen and say "up" when he wanted to be picked up so he could see what was going on.
More recently he's started saying "atch" which is his attempt to say "watch".
Over the weekend dad was making eggs for breakfast and Emmett just had to watch.
Watching often leads to helping...but he doesn't say "help" quite yet. Read more: Decode
Powdered Sugar Phone 2008-03-17 18:02:22 While mom and dad were fixing dinner this afternoon, Emmett was playing in the Tupperware cabinet.
After a few minutes of rummaging around, he came out saying "hello".
When I looked over at him, he was using the powdered sugar shaker as a telephone.
See the video of him dancing around with his new sugar shaker on the Read more: Sugar
Word Count 2008-03-21 22:45:48 This past week Emmett went to the doctor for his 1.5 year check up. The doctor said Emmett should have a target vocabulary of 3 to 6 words.
We told the doctor that Emmett already knows over 20 words.
Words Emmett Uses:

He's also got good receptive language skills. (he understands what's being said to him).
Helping With Breakfast 2008-03-21 09:45:03 One morning for breakfast we made Egg Casserole. Emmett wanted "up" so he could "watch" what was going on.
Which quickly turned into helping. He got to stir the eggs and cheese together in a bowl and could not have been happier!

Playing At The Park 2008-03-21 09:26:54 Yesterday we had good weather, and took a walk down to the park.
Emmett hasn't been to a playground before, and loved getting to climb up and down the stairs to the slide.
Once we got him up to the slide, he sat right down and pushed himself down the slide. He loved it!
We walked over to the swings, but he just wasn't interested in them yet.
Happy Easter 2008 2008-03-22 12:03:48 This year we went to the Eureka Community Center to participate in the annual Easter
Egg Hunt. At the Community Center, Emmett got to have his picture taken with the Easter Bunny! He wasn't too sure about sitting on the bunny's lap though.
Then Emmett got to go outside and hunt for easter eggs. It was very cold outside, but we enjoyed hunting for the eggs.
After we filled our bucket to the top, we headed back inside to see what was in our eggs. Behold- there were snacks in there!
When we were all done at the Easter Egg Hunt, we got to bring our eggs back home and continue to play with them inside:

Is There A Duck Fairy? 2008-03-24 22:09:17 Last summer Emmett received a collection of small rubber duck squirt toys from Grandma and Grandpa Bell, after they attended a wedding where the toys were a favor, thus the first word of 'duck'.
Then, on Valentine's Day there was a duck that belongs to the collection, in a top hat with a heart, on our front door wreath when we got home from being out. It wasn't from Grandma and Grandpa, mom and dad were clueless about it's origin, so after washing it in hot soapy water Emmett was allowed to play with it.
Then, last weekend when we got home after an afternoon out again, a duck dressed in a green suit and top hat was on the wreath. Grandma and Grandpa Bell had no idea where it came from, and this time we extended our list of suspects, Uncle Thomas--no, Heather--no, Uncle Jeremy and
night-night 2008-03-29 22:30:17 Emmett's hit another developmental milestone!
For the past two weeks he has asked to go "night-night" at bed time. After our evening routine and snuggle time, he just asks "night-night" and once monkey is in hand and the blankets are covering him, he fine. He does has for his fisher-price light and music show to be turned on(he also calls this 'night-night', probably because we turn it on as we say tell him that at bedtime).
He has also been sleeping through the night for the last week. Some mornings we even have to wake him up! Mom and dad are very happy about these new accomplishments, and their much more rested as well.
Dad's New Job 2008-04-03 15:38:03 This Monday Emmett's dad started his new job.
Unfortunately my job starts too early in the morning for me to be able to take Emmett to Mrs. Sherri's house in the mornings, and sometimes the traffic on the way home is too much for me to be able to pick him up from Mrs. Sherri's in the afternoons.
That is, except yesterday.
The weather was nice, and I was able to swing by and pick Emmett up in the afternoon to take him home. I knocked on the door, and when I opened it, Emmett took a great big step back, and a smile spread across his face.
His daddy had come to get him!
Taking A Walk and Chasing Puppies 2008-04-08 13:47:28 Yesterday we took advantage of the nice weather, and went for a walk in the park after dinner. To change our scenery a little, we went to Route 66 Park for a walk.
As soon as Emmett got out of his car seat he took off down the path. He got about 15 feet, and then stopped, turned around and ran the opposite direction saying "puppy - puppy - puppy!"
Because the weather was so nice, lots of people were out walking their dogs in the park. Emmett just gravitates to little puppies!
We were at the park probably an hour, and we walked less than 100 feet, on account of chasing puppies back and forth in different directions.
When there wasn't a puppy on the trail, Emmett took great interest in walking off the trail, and playing in the mud and dirt. One time I looked down, and he had his fingers Read more: Taking

Tip for Sneezing What Not To Do 2008-04-07 10:27:36 A few days ago Emmett had another tooth start to push up through his gums. He's been walking around the past few days with his fingers in his mouth rubbing his teeth where it hurts.
If you ask him if he would like some Ora gel, he's smile and start licking his lips, as he knows the Ora gel will make his mouth numb.
I was standing in the living room one evening as Emmett was walking around in circles with his fingers in his mouth when he sneezed all of a sudden.
He looked up at me, and big tears swelled up in his eyes. Sure enough, he didn't move his fingers out of his mouth before he sneezed, and he was left with a great big teeth marks in his chubby little fingers.
I laughed as I rubbed his hand for him, and told him to move his fingers out of the way next time. Read more: Sneezing
Who is Surprising Who? 2008-04-19 09:14:56 As part of my new job, I (dad) had to go out of town for training this past week. My training facility was located in Chicago Illinois.
Emmett, who normally asks to go to bed about 7pm, was staying up past 11:30pm each night I was gone, trying to keep himself awake just in case I came home. He would walk around in the evenings and say "dad?"
I thought I'd surprise Emmett by bringing him home a couple of t-shirts from the Rain Forest cafe and Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory.
When I came back into town on Friday night, I took my bags from the car and headed into the house. As I neared the door, I could hear a faint, yet familiar voice.
There was a surprise waiting for me - our friend Lisa G was at my house playing with Emmett!
Lego Fun 2008-04-19 20:09:08 Tonight we got out a new gift from our baby showers that we hadn't been able to use yet, LEGOS! Mrs. Hilliard got them as a gift for daddy and the new baby, because she remembered how much Chris and Josh enjoyed LEGOs as alittle ones.
The set we got is a zoo set, camels, elephants, zebras, 2 zoo keepers and much, much more. While daddy made dinner Emmett and mommy played, or Emmett took apart mommy's animals.
Spring Time BBQ 2008-04-20 22:26:39 Since the weather was above 70*F today, we packed our cooler and headed to the park to bbq some foil packs.
Emmett got to wear a pair of shorts today. When we took his long pants off, and put his shorts on, he just looked down at his legs, as if he was pondering why he was missing the bottom half of his pants.
Once we got to the park, and started the bbq pit, we took some time to walk around and see the squirrels, ducks, deer and flowers. Emmett stopped and looked at the yellow daisies growing in the grass. We told him they were "yellow" and he decided that was his new word for the day. He walked around saying "yellow".
Once our foil packs were done cooking, we sat down to eat. Emmett couldn't wait to have potatoes and ketchup!

Tootsie Roll Sucker 2008-04-29 19:18:08 This afternoon on our walk though town, Emmett got to meet Dr. Boschert who owns the store with the small steps in front that Emmett likes to sit on and take a break when we walk.
Dr. Boschert, who was locking up his store for the day, brought out a tootsie roll sucker for Emmett. Emmett was a little reluctant at first, but once he got the "go ahead" nod from mom, he decided he really liked the sucker.
To prevent him from falling with it in his mouth, we carried him for the rest of the walk.
After a while we noticed he had sucked the sucker all the way down to the tootsie roll part.
I, for one, have never known anyone to get their sucker all the way to the center without biting it.
Stacking Cans 2008-05-04 22:42:43 I was going though the photos on our digital camera tonight, and found this picture from a few days ago of Emmett playing in the pantry.
Emmett likes to open the door to the pantry sometimes, and play with the soup cans.
On this particular night he was seeing just how many cans he could stack on top of each other before they fell over. Read more: Stacking
Just Because It's Blue and Looks Yummy 2008-05-05 20:44:24 Just because something is blue and looks like it might be yummy, isn't a good reason to eat it (or try to eat it).
Emmett noticed a blue, un-attended marker sitting on the edge of the table this evening, and decided he'd see how it tasted.
Below is how it turned out.

Jumbo Count -That Should Last a Week 2008-05-10 21:05:52 Today we went shopping at Sam's Club to stock up our refrigerator. While we were walking though the isles, we found Emmett's current favorite snack item: fruit snacks!
At Sam's Club, we found a box of 72 count snack bags, nearly 3 times more in the box than a normal sized box. Amy and I looked at each other and agreed this larger sized box ought to last us nearly a full week!
