Bodhrun Players
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Bodhrun Players 16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasAt the Galway pub in Lorient on a Wednesday night musicians gather, it is a free and very fine evening of music, mostly Irish with the heart beat of the Bodhrun. People sing of being far from home, in a land that does not belong to them. A feeling that I recognise and enjoy. Someone asked me last night why I lived here, I think that is one of the reasons, I like being an outsider it pulls things into unexpected focus.Love from Sarah xx60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Red Cafe
1970-01-01 00:59:59
SOLDRed Cafe 16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasI am back! It was a horrible migraine but it has gone and I feel like new. I have been well and truly looked after by himself and also thank you to everyone who sent good wishes.Yesterday I relaxed, did homey stuff and went shopping. I loathe shopping so I like to soften the blow by going early and starting the whole thing with a croissant and an excellent coffee for breakfast. I was sitting in the café when I spotted this couple, looking like "Brief Encounter" within a Mondrian painting. I love everything about this, the colours, the light and the understated drama of their meeting. I enjoy people watching and could happily while away hours just sitting in a café, with my sketchbook, watching the world go by.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Mincer
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Mincer16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasIt is Dave's birthday today so a fitting tribute, a mincer! He doesn't mince around, far from it but he cooks. He is a cuisinier and when he makes anything that requires mincing this beautiful machine comes into use. There is something very satisfying about mincing in real time, doing it the old fashioned way, and I love the curves and sweeps of the lines here. So here it is sitting in the corner of my kitchen, ready for action. Just like him!60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Oyster Stall
1970-01-01 00:59:59
SOLDOyster Stall 10cm x 18cm. 4 in x 7in.Oil on stretched canvasThe painting today is late. I have spent most of the morning at the market. It was a cold bright day and I was seduced by the thought of oysters for supper and the wonderful blues of the oyster stall. Now though, because it is late in the day, the light has nearly gone, the reproduction of this little painting leaves something to be desired. Ah well. This is a little one.40 pounds (UK) 78 dollars (USA) and 60 euros (Europe). Includes the postage.

The Spice of Life
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Spice of Life16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasI think a painting should try to have an essence, to convey a feeling, a fleeting shadow or pattern of light, the weight of an object, a memory of something past or an aspect of someone. This painting has a few of those elements for me. There is the play of light from a window onto heavy and pleasing shapes, the solid objects and the soft shadows. These are Indian spice boxes, they are packed with spices mostly in their whole state, seeds, sticks and berries that, when the lids of the boxes are lifted, flood the air with rich exotic sent. My other half, my constant friend and partner, loves to cook. He weaves magic in the kitchen and these are the tools of his artistry. So, you see, this painting is also a kind of portrait, an aspect of him.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Narcissus
1970-01-01 00:59:59
SOLDNarcissus 16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasAnother windowsill still life. I like the comparison of the tiny new flower, just bloomed, with the old chipped terracotta flowerpots. I also love these early flowers with their exquisite and intoxicating perfumes, essence of springtime. Breathe it in; breathe deeply on a cold winter morning.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Brown Eggs

SOLDBrown Eggs20cm x 20cm. 7.9in x 7.9in.Oil on stretched canvasBrown eggs from the market, white china, linen cloth and winter light combine to make a peaceful but powerful subject for a still life study. There is something extremely calming about the shape of an egg, it is fragile and strong at the same time, a yin and yang thing.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Comfort Food
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Comfort Food16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasToday I have been struggling, with the cold, with winter, with painting, with everything. This is a solution, comfort food, Golden Syrup on toast, by the fire. I have the fire, I have the tin of Golden Syrup but the only problem is that it is empty; I can't find the stuff in France. I refuse to go to one of those shops set up for "ex-pats"; I don't think I am an "ex-pat". I am just me, a European person, living in a place a few miles from where I was born, missing Golden Syrup.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Savoy Cabbage
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Savoy Cabbage 16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvas"For me this is the king of cabbages, I don't care what it tastes like, although it tastes fabulous, I think it is simply stunning to look at. Deep furrows of greeny blue with ruffles of bright greens. If I ever had to have a posh frock, like I had an invitation to the Oscar's or some such party, then I would base it on a Savoy cabbage. Just imagine how beautiful it would be!"This is Available at The Gillian Jones Gallery

Madrid Windows
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Madrid Windows .30cm x 30cm. 12in x 12in.Oil on stretched canvasI am in love with this painting, it makes me feel so happy, the buttery yellows and the sunshine. I saw these windows last summer when I was in Madrid and one of the things that I liked so much was the tiny splash of purple in the window boxes, I am very fond of that combination of purple and yellow. If you want the whole experience of this picture it is necessary to listen to Rodrigo Y Gabriela as that is what I have been playing while painting, oh yes and eat some paella! This is not for sale through me but it is available through a gallery in America. I shall be doing several for that gallery in the next few days, you can find it here:The Gillian Jones Gallery. As always I appreciate any comments that you may have, blogger seems to have been having problems with comments so give it a test.

Horse
1970-01-01 00:59:59
SOLDHorse 16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasThere is something amazing about horses. I don't ride, wasn't a horse obsessed little girl, never had dreams of having a pony but I am in awe of these animals. Their heads are so huge with such beautiful eyes that seem capable of looking right into your heart. The smell of a horse is the kind of scent that wanders down the centuries, a meandering link with our past. I hope we are nice enough to horses, I think they deserve our respect.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Changes
1970-01-01 00:59:59
After a weekend of soul searching and a great deal of consideration I have decided to stop producing a painting a day.I will however continue to produce My New Work. So, what does this mean? Well, I shall be posting my work as and when I have finished each piece. I want to be able to develop work and to have time to work on larger pieces. This will mean that I may or may not have time to produce the smaller works, each day, which have been my painting a day series. I have, to date, produced more than 220 individual paintings since June 2006.

The Dying of the Day
1970-01-01 00:59:59
SOLD (sorry)The Dying of the Day20 cm x 15 cm. 7.9 in x 5.9 in.Watercolour"An anvil shaped thunder cloud is gathering on the horizon at the dying of the day. Big skies are so wonderful, so fleeting in their beauty and so tempting to try to capture" All about selling my work:It is for sale, this little painting. Should you decide to add it to your collection it would arrive with a mount and be carefully wrapped in tissue paper before being posted in a protective envelope. The prices for such a transaction are up there, to your right. You can also choose to have it as a limited edition should you prefer. In a print run of only 25 this would make it quite collectable.

Music

Chapel Light
1970-01-01 00:59:59
SOLDChapel Light18cm x 14cm. 7.1in x 5.5in.Oil on stretched canvasWalking through the cathedral of the forest I chanced upon a little chapel, St Anne des Bois, the door was open so I went inside. Three candles were burning, the winter sunlight poured through the windows making a kaleidoscope of soft colour on the walls. It was so quiet and calm that I sat drawing for a while. It seems to me that it really doesn't matter what religion you choose to follow, places like this fill you up and smooth you down.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Stone Heart
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Stone Heart 27cm x 41cm. 10.6 in x 16.1in.Oil on stretched canvasDoes a portrait tell a story? I think it should, or perhaps when an artist paints a portrait then there is a story in mind. This is my daughter, with the world in the palm of her hand; there is nothing that she cannot do. Looking back I think that we all go through that time in our lives but all to often it passes before we realise it. I wanted to catch it here. She hasn't got a stone heart by the way, quite the opposite, she is holding one, found on the beach. This painting is not for sale but I do take commissions for portraits email me if you would like more details about commissioning a painting.

SOLDBlue Cafe20cm x 20cm. 8 in x 8in.Oil on stretched canvasThat title sounds like a Joni Mitchell song. Actually, it was a bit like one, early morning in some strange café, on the way to somewhere coming from somewhere else. I always listen to music when I am painting and like to choose the music to suit the mood of the painting. Because this moment had reminded me of Joni Mitchell's music that was exactly what I listened to.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
