Cloak of Green 2007-04-13 09:25:00 Cloak of Green
18cm x 10cm. 7 in x 4 in.Oil on stretched canvasGreen glorious green, everywhere things are growing. The fields are a bright vibrant green, the trees are becoming soft verdant pillows, and the conifers have vivid tips to their branches. The earth really does seem to wear a cloak of softest green. This is the view as I stand at the end of my drive way, beside my post-box, I see it every day and it seems to be my calendar, my barometer of the seasons. 60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Bristol Morning. 2007-04-20 10:11:00 Bristol Morning
.20cm x 15cm. 8 in x 6in.Oil gesso board.Near the market in the old centre of Bristol is Christ Church with St Ewen. On this church are two little guys called the Quarter Jacks who ring the bells on the quarter hour. They were the original focus of this painting, however the sun was shining brightly and making shadows so the little Quarter Jacks became indistinct and I was seduced by the buttery coloured stone. Many of the buildings have been cleaned and now the city seems to glow in the sunshine.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage. Read more:Bristol
Bristol Breakfast. 2007-04-19 14:39:00 Bristol Breakfast
.23cm x 13.5cm. 9 in x 5.2in.Oil gesso board.I am back after a great “city break” in Bristol. A great pleasure is going out early to watch a city wake up. In this area of Bristol all of the grand old bank buildings have been turned into bars and cafes. Lofty Georgian architecture lends a peaceful splendour to a simple breakfast.I feel very lucky, as I have been away for long enough for the familiar to become the exotic. I am seeing with the eyes of a traveller and it is exciting, sometimes a bit overwhelming as my head is overflowing with pictures waiting to be painted.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). A Portraits Progress 2007-04-21 23:43:00 This is going to be like a soap opera, you will be on the edge of your seats!I am going to blog this portrait as I do it, at the end of each day that I have worked on it, just for fun, to show the progress of a painting.I am working quite hard right now, a big bunch of illustration work to do, lots of small paintings clamoring around wanting to be painted, several larger ones too and some commissions. On top of that I have some portraits that I am working on. I am quite an impatient person and in order to slow myself down I try to work on several things at the same time, it allows for paint to dry and thoughts to formulate. Here we go...A Portraits
Progress... I will start with some sketches and photographs. The sketches are how I try to distill what it is that I like about a subject. They also serve as reminders of all the other senses, smell, sound, feelings, mood. Sometimes a thought or idea is very fleeting and so this is where I catch them. After the sketches I do a careful line d
Portraits Progress Day 2 2007-04-23 21:06:00 Oil on canvas. 40cm x 40cm or 16in x 16inI have used Alizarin Crimson thinned with turps to draw over the charcoal lines. Two reasons, first of all it fixes the charcoal, or replaces it, and stops it making everything turn a bit grey, secondly Alizarin Crimson shows up quite well when it is underneath other colours, so at first the drawing will still be visible. Once that is dry I block in the lights and the darks. On this one I have started with the very light areas but there is no reason for this, I could have started with the darks. I think as the light is such a strong part of this picture I was keen to put it in. You can see here that this is still quite rough; it is not necessary to be precise. I then place the darks making some differentiation between the very darkest shapes and the merely shadowy. I never paint with black, as I seem to find quite a lot of colours in the darkest places and I want to get them in. Now the picture is beginning to take shape, light is already catchi Read more:Portraits
Bristol Bridge and Spring Blossom. 2007-04-23 10:04:00 SOLDBristol
Bridge and SpringBlossom
.24cm x 18cm. 9.5 in x 7in.Oil gesso board.Good morning! It is a truly beautiful day here, sun, birdsong and the fresh new green of a fine spring day.I have just finished this painting and I love it. The bridge in the background is Bristol Bridge; it was an unusually hot day for April. The sunlight was glancing off the new leaves and blossoms that covered the trees making everything shimmer, the new leaves, the light, the shadows on the grass and the paths, the buildings and the river all shattering into colours and shapes. Springtime in England, after all that rain and gloom maybe makes it all the more glorious.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Early Morning Market 2007-04-26 12:47:00 Early MorningMarket
20cm x 20cm. 8 in x 8in.Oil gesso board. This is the way towards St Nicholas Market in Bristol. The day starts, people walking to work in the early morning light. It is the start of a warm day and the city noise at this time is the chatter of sparrows from the infatuated stones of sleepy buildings.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). Fitting The Shoe. 2007-04-25 13:42:00 SOLDFitting The Shoe
.30cm x 30cm. 12in x 12in.Oil on stretched canvasThe moment that the farrier fits the shoe the air fills with a strange smell of hot iron and hoof. Morning light is dissipated through the smoke and steam. The horse is totally unconcerned, safe in the expert hands. The farrier makes the shoe fit perfectly using just his experienced eye, removing it for a slight adjustment before the final fitting. It is so fascinating seeing a real craftsman at work, watching the years of experience make a complicated task look so deceptively easy.136 pounds (UK) 273 dollars (USA) and 200 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Breton Horse 2007-04-24 11:24:00 SOLDBretonHorse
20cm x 20cm. 8 in x 8in.Oil gesso board.Another portrait of the beautiful Breton Horses at the Haras National in Hennebont. A Haras is a stud farm for the preservation and development of the breed. This one at Hennebont (our local town) has fantastic old stables filled with these magnificent stallions. Solid and powerful they seem quite content to be visited by the likes of me with my sketchbook.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

New Wheat 2007-04-30 13:16:00 New Wheat40cm x 40cm. 15.7in x 15.7in.Oil on stretched canvasThese spring mornings are softened with mist from a heavy dewfall. New wheat fields shine like bright beacons in the hazy landscape. The sun rises in the sky, slowly everything is brought into focus. As I turn the corner onto the track that leads to home I am confronted with this perfectly framed composition in greens.136 pounds (UK) 273 dollars (USA) and 200 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Forest Path 2007-05-03 11:35:00 Forest Path18cm x 14cm. 7 in x 5.5in.Oil on stretched canvasThe low sun of early morning making a cathedral of the forest. Tall pillars of trees casting processional shadows across the path. The bright leaves of birches like a stained glass backdrop.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). Soft Wheat Field 2007-05-02 18:28:00 Soft Wheat Field
18cm x 14cm. 7 in x 5.5in.Oil on stretched canvasThis is a study that I have done to support the larger landscape that I am painting, “stage by stage” over on my blog Muddy Red Shoes. This is quite early in the morning; clear blue sky and fresh new green everywhere. The wheat is soft, like a baby’s hairbrush, in the next field, fresh earth lies rich and dark waiting to be sown. The pine trees have bright tips like little lime-green lights.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Inukshuk 2007-05-08 14:19:00 Inukshuk20.3cm x 22.9cm. 8in x 9in.WatercolourThis is a commission. It is a way pointer, or Inukshuk, I think. I have not been to Canada but as I painted it I tried to get a little of the atmosphere so I surrounded myself with pinecones and listened to a recording of loons (honestly!)It is very good to paint in watercolour again, think I will do a few more. I have documented each stage of this painting and might blog the making over on Muddy Red Shoes after I have finished the landscape one that is going on now.Obviously, as it is a commission, it is not for sale. I hope he likes it, he hasn't seen it yet.
Wind Tracks in the Barley. 2007-05-07 10:54:00 Wind Tracks in the Barley
.23cm x 17.5cm. 9 in x 7in.Oil gesso board. It is barley, not wheat. This beautiful green sea of soft new growth that is filling the fields around my home is barley. I keep calling it wheat; obviously I am not a farmer. This is the corner of the field where the marks of the tractor mingle with wind tracks to make drawings in the soft blanket of colour.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Red Campion 2007-05-11 11:59:00 Red Campion23cm x 17.5cm. 9 in x 7in.Oil gesso board. The seasons have their own colours; spring has the bright acid greens as well as a softer pastel collection with the pinks of Red Campion and the purple blue of Bluebells.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Inside the Forbidden City. 2007-03-19 14:40:00 SOLD Inside the Forbidden
City.24cm x 19cm.9.5. in x 7.5in.Oil gesso board.Today’s painting is obviously not a little bit of Brittany. It is actually a Little Bit of Beijing. I found a load of old sketchbooks and pictures from my travels the other day and thought that a change of venue might be good for the soul. The doorway is inside the Forbidden City in Beijing. With that beautiful range of reds and a splash of scarlet at the end of the corridor it easily caught my eye. I have no idea what the writing said but I tried to copy it, I remember at the time thinking that it was either very profound or said something like “staff only, unless you are the red paint delivery person”
Tall Trees 2007-01-13 14:09:00 Tall Trees
14cm x 18cm. 5.5in x 7in.Oil on stretched canvasDeep in the forest are old roads; all that is left now are fragments of walls, slashes of dark stone running through the gullies. The ancient thoroughfares now filled with tall moss covered trees. I wonder if our towns and cities will one day be reclaimed becoming just a hint of what they once were, becoming a smudge in the forests. I quite like that future.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

16cm x 9 cm. 6.5 in x 3.5 in.Watercolour"Saturday in autumn, the sun is shining, it is cold. Finally the leaves may give up their hold on a faded summer green and begin to turn. We have a bonfire and the soft blue smoke drifts up through the shafts of cold sunlight"This is for sale. 60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 90 euros (Europe). which includes the postage. October Day 2006-10-25 14:39:00 October
Day20 cm x 20 cm. 7.9 in x 7.9 in.Oil on stretched linen canvas"There have been storms and tempests, rain and wind. Now there is a lull, a brief respite and a window in the weather. So the dog and I dash out into a wet and dripping world. It reminds me of a child, worn out with sobbing, quiet now except for a few shuddering breaths, sodden and ravaged by the storm that passed through"The reproduction of these paintings leaves a bit to be desired, I am sorry about that. The fact is, they are wet when I photograph them and I am not much of a photographer. In real life they are crisper and the colours are clear. However if you like them now just think how much you would like to own it, to see it for real…go on, buy one! Email me and we can sort it out.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 90 euros (Europe). which includes the postage.
Rich Autumn Earth 2006-10-07 17:34:00 Rich AutumnEarth
20 cm x 17 cm. 8 in x 6.7 in.Watercolour with Body colour"Autumn ploughing throws up the rich dark earth. Like soft velvet across the landscape, the intense brooding colours lie beneath a heavy sky"This is for sale, see the prices at the side, also as a limited edition.
Coffee 2006-10-05 11:27:00 Coffee13 cm x 15 cm. 5 in x 6 in.Watercolour"Occasionally it is good to sit down and tackle shiny and smooth, colour and reflection. Breakfast of juice, coffee and fruit provided the opportunity today. I enjoy looking back over the daily paintings to see the changes in colour and mood of the seasons. Still life, perhaps, will only show that in a very subtle way, maybe in the unconscious choice of colour or subject matter" Now for my sales pitch:This little painting is for sale, it will arrive, signed and dated with a mount, in a protective envelope. The prices are inclusive of shipping and to be seen at the side. You can also buy it as a limited edition print, in a print run of only 25 and printed on 190g Bockingford Inkjet Watercolour paper. A Still Day 2006-10-04 11:09:00 SOLDA Still Day20 cm x 15 cm. 8 in x 6 in.Watercolour"Walking beside the river on a still morning, the reflections are perfect. Blue green trees shimmer in the gently flowing water with clouds floating quietly below them. It sometimes seems that things seen in reflections are a glimpse of another world"
Parasol Mushrooms 2006-09-28 13:32:00 Parasol Mushrooms
19 cm x 20 cm. 7.5 in x 7.9 in.Watercolour"The first mushrooms that I have found this year. These are parasol mushrooms, or lepiota. They were clean and fresh, growing beneath some old hazel trees on the edge of the field. Standing up over the dew soaked grass like sentinels of autumn, their soft earthy smell quietly heralding the change in the seasons. I have enough for supper for they make splendid eating. I suppose I should add that they cause upset tummies in some people and you should check very carefully before eating fungi. I have foraged for fungus for many a year, tried a lot of them and have a few favourites. You have to make your own mind up on the fungi as free food fing!" This is also available as a giclee print in a strictly limited edition of 25
