Gardening. 2007-03-22 10:03:00 Gardening.20cm x 20cm. 8in x 8in.Oil gesso board.(click on the image for a larger view)Although now the weather has turned cold again, a couple of days ago the air was warm and the sun was shining. Rotovating the vegetable plot is one of the early signs of spring. The earth is a fresh rich brown, the grass is bright and vibrant and the smell of growth and green is in the air. I liked the way my rabbit proof fence of sticks made an interesting linear pattern, breaking up the green and the little splashes of red on the rotovator and David’s bandanna. It is fine indeed, when I get to sit and paint while he does all the work!60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). After The Gold Rush. 2007-03-21 16:14:00 After The Gold Rush
.19cm x 24cm. 7.5in. x 9.5. inOil gesso board.Another Little Bit of Beijing. This was at the end of a very busy lunchtime in a dumpling house in Beijing. I was still fumbling around with slippery dumplings and chopsticks long after the big lunchtime rush when the staff gathered together for their meal. With them all being in white, the sunlight on the wall beyond and catching their clothes, it made an irresistible subject for a painting. A bit like the dumplings.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Meeting in the Forest 2007-01-15 11:59:00 SOLDMeeting in the Forest
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvasThis morning, just as it was getting light, I was walking the dog and enjoying the dawn chorus. I stopped for a while to sit beneath a tree and concentrate on sending a text to my son in Australia. Suddenly the hairs on the back of my neck rose and I smelt a strange musty smell. Looking up from my tiny window on the 21st century I came face to face with the past. A wild boar stood about fifteen feet (five meters) away from me. For a second he stood there watching me with his little ancient eye. I was rooted to the spot. Then he seemed to shrug and sniff the air before he moved off into the depths of the forest.I rushed home full of the juxtaposition of time, trying to remember how he looked and how I felt.I did a quick sketch, (which you can see on my daily blog) and then a little painting. Times like these pull out all the visual memory tricks, it is like trying to catch hold of smoke and give it substance, it
Megaliths near Carnac 2006-08-22 14:49:00 SOLD Megaliths near Carnac13 cm x 13 cm. 5 in x 5in.Watercolour“There are rows and rows of these standing stones near Carnac. Rain-Sky in Josselin. 2007-03-23 10:28:00 Rain-Sky in Josselin.20cm x 20cm. 8in x 8in.Oil gesso board.Josselin is a beautiful half-timbered town in Brittany. For me it has a special colour, I call it Josselin Rose, it is a kind of dark dusky pink, with a hint of magenta. Every time I go there my head is full of shades of this colour. Rain was coming and the sky was heavy with a potential storm, deep and full of Josselin Rose. I am off there now, to have lunch with a friend, we will sit in a café and I may well draw, I wonder if Josselin Rose is inside the buildings as well, we shall see.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Gateway to The Forbidden City 2007-03-24 10:27:00 Gateway to The Forbidden
City25.5cm x 20.5cm. 10 in x 8 in.Oil gesso board.Beijing again with a crowd of people coming into the Forbidden City through the main gateway. It is winter and a snowfall has made outside even brighter, the stone floor is wet with melting snow. Huge shapes of terracotta and ochre, masses of people wearing blue or green and light flooding through. The memories are still sharp, echoes of many footfalls, voices in a language that I don’t understand become like music and the cold air rushes in carrying strange unfamiliar smells.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage. Read more:Gateway
Boy in Sunlight 2007-03-27 14:44:00 Boy in Sunlight
25.5cm x 20.5cm. 10 in x 8 in.Oil gesso board.Click on the image for a larger viewSometimes gloom descends and I doubt everything. Its "arty-pants" "creative nonsense" and I hate it. It is those times when I try to test myself with a difficult subject. This young man is not a difficult subject, he is a very willing and excellent model but painting a face in such deep shadow with strong light touching just part of it is difficult. Unexpected colours appear, shapes are hidden within the darkness. Anyway having tackled it I feel a bit better, I think it worked. This is a warm up for a larger portrait.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Blavet Morning 2007-03-28 12:44:00 Blavet Morning
15cm x 10cm. 6 in x 4 in.Oil gesso board.(Click on the image to see a bigger picture.)An early morning walk beside the river Blavet, sun just coming up and all is misty and quiet. This is a quick sketch using tiny portable boards, I wanted to try out the postcard size. I like the quickness of it and I like the brush marks that result, it is quite loose and fresh working like this.30 pounds (UK) 58 dollars (USA) and 42euros (Europe). This includes the postage. P.S. My young model yesterday liked the painting but thought he looked a bit like a cow...he is right. Out of the mouths of children eh!
Spring Ploughing 2007-03-30 12:22:00 Spring Ploughing25.5cm x 20.5cm. 10 in x 8 in.Oil gesso board.Another sign that spring is on the way, tractors turning the earth with an audience of hopeful seagulls. Getting this was quite funny. I was on my way out to meet a friend for lunch, dressed in an assemblage of bright colours, purple, scarlet and a rainbow jumper, my going out clothes, when I saw this. So I stopped the car and ran back down the road to sketch the scene, first of all the seagulls took fright as I appeared, big and brightly coloured against all the browns and greens, so I drew the tractor and the field while they calmed down. The farmer must have wondered what on earth I was doing as he drove up and down several times passing me standing on his hedge, in my best clothes, drawing away. At least we didn’t talk or he would have guessed that I was English, maybe he guessed anyway!60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage. Read more:Spring

Cold Wind, Blue Sky. 2007-04-03 11:37:00 SOLDCold Wind, Blue Sky
.36cm x 24cm. 13 in x 10 in.Oil gesso board.Almost midday in Hennebont, there is a sharp cold wind but the sun is shining brightly and the sky is a seamless blue. The trees in the towns have had their spring pruning, and stand with their few branches spread against the sky.76 pounds (UK) 150 dollars (USA) and 113 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Wedding Day. 2007-04-02 16:04:00 Wedding Day.20cm x 20cm. 8in x 8in.Oil on stretched canvas. This painting is a birthday present for my younger brother. I think his computer is broken so I don’t think he will see this before it gets to him.Last September he got married to a very lovely lady. They celebrated their wedding on a beach in Wales, it wasn’t a bright sunshiny day, in fact it rained but I don't think that mattered a bit, they were obviously so very happy.I liked this little image; the colours of their clothes went very well with all the subtle greys of the sea and wet sand.
New Leaves, Pont Aven 2007-04-05 10:31:00 New Leaves, Pont Aven.23cm x 17cm. 9 in x 7in.Oil gesso board.Behind the busy streets of galleries, biscuit shops and Gauguin memorabilia in Pont Aven the river races past the backs of houses, over boulders and underneath little bridges. New leaves light the shadows with flashes of brilliant green. If you are interested, you can follow the trip to Pont Aven, sketching, artistic refreshment and final making of this painting, in a little video over on You Tube. Click here to see it.The painting costs:60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Horse Shadows 2007-04-04 13:04:00 Horse Shadows
15cm x 10cm. 6 in x 4 in.Oil gesso board.Early morning again, the sun had just risen above the trees and these three horses were having their breakfast nibble. Long shadows stretched out across the wet grass and a tiny sliver of light caught their backs.30 pounds (UK) 58 dollars (USA) and 42euros (Europe). This includes the postage.I am working hard on some illustration work so paintings may be a bit sporadic for a while but I will try to fit both in.Now, a little reminder: I know it is possible to take prints of my paintings, and I don’t mind that much, although this is how I make my living. If you see a painting that you really like and cant afford (or it has sold) please remember that I produce prints up to A3 size, on very high quality paper. They are far superior to anything that can be printed (or pirated) free from my blog and really, for a limited edition of only 50, they are not that expensive at £20.00 or $40.00 or €30.00 postage included. So have a think, i Read more:Horse
Rapeseed Fields 2007-04-06 11:50:00 SOLDRapeseed Fields
15cm x 10cm. 6 in x 4 in.Oil gesso board. The lemon yellow slashes of the rapeseed fields are waking up the senses. The strong waxy scent is in the air while the yellow splashes across the fields as if a bored artist has finally tired of using somber colours.Have a very happy Easter or Pâques
Fields of Silver. 2007-04-09 11:42:00 Fields of Silver
.15cm x 10cm. 6 in x 4 in.Oil gesso board.Out very early, I have a lot of commissioned work to do so it is a small sketch again. The wind on the new grass makes a small sea of silver. It is Easter Monday, all I can hear is the morning song of the birds a distant cockerel and, with great pleasure, the first cuckoo.30 pounds (UK) 58 dollars (USA) and 42euros (Europe). The House of The Forest 2007-04-10 11:59:00 SOLDThe House
of The Forest
18cm x 14cm. 7 in x 5.5in.Oil on stretched canvasThe sun is getting stronger now painting shadows onto the lane, this is the last house on our lane, beyond is the forest where I walk the dog. Every morning the trees fill out just a little more, fresh leaves, as welcome as a long cool drink on a very hot day. The countryside seems to sigh and stretch out in the first warm rays of spring.
Oak Tree 2007-04-12 15:37:00 Oak Tree18cm x 12cm. 7 in x 4.5in.Oil on stretched canvasThe oak leaves are just appearing, a faint blush of green. This giant old oak has seen so many spring times; it must be at least three hundred years old. Like a silent sentinel watching the passing of time. The ebb and flow of the seasons, revolutions and war, joy and sadness have all played out their dramas beneath its branches.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
