Soccerlens 2007 Award Winners - Not Soccerchica
2008-02-18 09:51:00
We are somewhat disappointed to see this morning that we were not the the winner of Soccerlens.com's Best Women's Football Blog of 2007. Nonetheless, we are pleased that we achieved runner-up status both from the Readers Choice and Editor's Choice. Kickster, which is run by a group of professional soccer journalists. Not bad for a new blog, run by a college student and and a part-time admin. Thanks for all who voted for us.

Afghanistan’s national women’s soccer team captain is amazing
2008-02-14 22:24:26
Photo: Ruby Washington/The New York TimesThe New York Times wrote an article earlier this week on Shamila Kohestani, the captain of Afghanistan ’s national women’s soccer team. She's currently studying in the US at the Blair Academy in NJ. She had little formal education under Taliban rule in Afghanistan and strives to make a better life for herself and serve as a role model for other young women in her country. It continues to amaze me at how much of a role soccer plays in helping women express themselves and their limited freedoms in the many countries where women don't have the rights we in the US take for granted. In case you missed it, read the article here: NY Times: Soccer as an Escape to Hope for Afghan Teenager

"Football Under Cover" makes a statement for the passion of women's soccer
2008-02-13 15:47:05
Director Ayat Najafi's movie, "Foootball Under Cover , " premiered at the 2008 Berlinale on Feb 10, 2008. The Hollywood Reporter reviewed it in today's online edition (Football Under Cover- Bottom Line: Girls' soccer team enjoys a level playing field in Iran). Although I've not seem the film, I've spent some time reviewing the promo materials, watching what clips I could get my hands on and reading about the game. The film, which is about a "friendly match" between a local Berlin girls soccer team and the Iranian national women's team addresses truly plays to the Iranian woman's struggle for freedom, aspirations and dreams. The game was an enormous challenge to stage and ran into many stumbling political roadblocks. But, the successful play of this game, at which only women were allowed

Soccer fans risk heart attacks?
2008-02-10 15:25:00
I put this in the "Funny Stuff" category, because I have a dark sense of humor. Read at your own risk. German researchers recently conducted a study that concluded watching a big soccer match can strain a fan's heart. After studying the effects of matches during the 2006 World Cup, they concluded that, for German men, the risk of having a heart attack or some other serious heart problem was more than three times higher on days when their team played. It was 82 percent higher for German women. "Six of the seven games in which the German team participated were associated with an increase in the number of cardiac emergencies over the number during the control period," they wrote. The largest number occurred during a June 30 quarterfinal in which Germany defeated Argentina in a dramatic pen

College Life
2008-01-31 01:33:00
Good morning. Yes, it's 1:30 in the morning as I sit here at write to you. Last night, I went until 2:30 or 3:00. Ah, the life of a college student. Speaking of, I know you all know how this feels: taking a full course load, having a part-time job so you can get a car (or food or rent money, or whatever), being involved in multiple extra-cirricular activities, doing volunteer work, trying to have a social life, and attempting to not neglect your family in the midst of all this. Do you wake up some mornings and just think, "I can't do it anymore"? I know after a good, "productive" all-nighter I want nothing more than to be able to just go home for a week or so (without penalty) and catch up on my sleep. Oh! How about those lonely nights? Those are killer. It's 2 or 3 in the morning. Ever

New Additions: 2008 Girl's Soccer Camps
2008-01-22 21:34:42
The colleges and universities are beginning to put dates to their 2008 Girl's Soccer Camp offerings. So, in addition to our previous post of camps, we've started to compile a collegiate-sponsored girl's soccer camp list. You can check it out here: -girls-soccer-camps.html. We'll be adding to this list over the next month or so, so check back frequently. If you know of any collegiate soccer camps, for girls 10-18, let us know by posting a comment to this entry and we'll consider adding it to our list.

New Additions: Links to Collegiate Women's Soccer Program
2008-01-20 21:28:00
We've just started a Link Director for Collegiate Women 's Soccer Program . Check out the link at the left under the "Menu" header. We've listed the colleges by part of the country, and state. We don't have them all listed yet, but hope to complete the list of the next few months. If you find one you think we should add, add it to the comments of this entry and we'll research it.

Mia Hamm featured in new WPS Logo
2008-01-17 10:21:00
The much anticipated women's professional soccer league now has a name, logo and website. "Women's Professional Soccer" or "WPS" debuted today, and with it came new logo featuring a silhouette of Mia Hamm about to strike a ball. Hamm herself if quite proud of the honor. “I am extremely honored and humbled to personify the WPS brand, knowing full well that this league will be revered by generations of soccer fans around the world,” said Hamm. “Above all else, this league represents opportunity – not just for female soccer players, but for women everywhere.” The league also launched its official website at www.womensprosoccer.com. The website is a source for all information related to the league, WPS teams, prospective players and women’s soccer in general.

Gays in Soccer
2008-03-14 11:35:00
Big D sent me this article, and I thought it was pretty interesting. I still don't know how to get the actual article in this entry, so here's the link: Gays in Soccer I was particularly caught by the word "popular" used to describe homosexuality in South America. Of course, I'd love to hear what you think of the issue. Is soccer really for everyone or should the soccer community stick to a "don't ask, don't tell" standard? Speak up. Be heard. -SC

I'm back! For now.
2008-03-13 09:40:00
Hey there! I know it's been a while. I apologize, but appreciate Big D's efforts to keep this up when I'm unable to. I also want to thank you all for your wonderful comments. It's always nice to see evidence that real people are actually reading this blog. So, between a heavy class load, a part-time job, and gobs of volunteer work, while Big D has been running this show, I've seen a lot happen in the soccer world. It's all kind of flown by in the two months since I've written. I intend to just jump right back into this...until I get enormously stressed out again...and keep talking to you. Watch for an update in the next couple of days! Thanks again for all your support!!! -SC

Kickin' It Over-the-Hill
2008-03-21 21:55:31
These are some amazing people. I hope I can still be active as intensly as they are when I hit 50. I think the program is great and that this group of men and women would be very interesting to know. Over 50 and Still Kickin' Any over 50 soccerchicas or soccerdudes out there? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Respect for Referees
2008-03-23 08:49:00
This is an article about a campaign for respect for soccer referees. The campaign was started by The Football Association and has recently been pubically supported by Manchester United's manager, Ferguson. Ferguson Backs Call for Respect I think this is great. It's so important that we treat all referees, umpires, game officials of any sort with the utmost respect. They are figures of authority on the feild, court, diamond, whatever. Especially in soccer, there is so much to watch at one time and so much effort goes into each minute and each call. They have a hard job to do and can't possibly please everyone. Though we as players, coaches, or spectators may not agree with some calls, we absolutely must remember that they deserve our respect. We think it's hard to play, but to referee is

Don't Make Big D Angry
2008-04-04 20:53:00
Ok... I have to add a disclaimer to that last entry. In "5 Great Alternatives to Writing a Paper," I may have encouraged you to push aside homework that should be a priority. So I have a few points to add: A student-athlete has to be a student first. That's why the student comes first. Doing your homework, papers, and projects now will better prepare you for life beyond school, when deadlines are deadlines no matter what. The 5 alternatives should never be applied to the workplace or the home. Practicing the 5 alternatives too regularly may result in lower grades. SoccerChica is not responsible for low grades due to tardiness of the paper/project or poor quality. Neither is Big D. Nor are we responsible for groundings or other punishment due to lower grades or calls from teachers or

5 Great Alternatives to Writing a College Paper
2008-04-02 20:06:41
While the particular paper to be avoided is for my freshman level English Comp class, these can be applied to any paper or project that you desire to avoid like the Plague. 1) Write a blog entry. -This is a prime example. I don't want to write the English paper, so I am writing this ABOUT not writing my English paper. I've managed to avoid the paper and put off the guilt by not doing something completely unrelated to the paper. 2) Go outside. -Physical activity will provide endorphins that schoolwork quickly drain. When you get back to the paper/project, you might actually WANT to do it! 3) Volunteer. -No teacher can refuse the excuse, "I was out late feeding the homeless/building a ramp for a man in a wheelchair/reading to children in the burn unit (or whatever it is you do) and didn't

A New Type of World Cup
2008-04-06 20:45:00
I found this really interesting. I'd never heard of anything like this. To see this organization reach out on such a global level (with soccer no less) is amazing. Check it out. Homeless World Cup Can you imagine??? I would like to meet the person who came up with this idea. The author of the comment obviously missed a few major points: 1) This a MINISTRY. It's supposed to reach out to those who need help. Duh! and 2) This is truly imporving lives. It's not just making homeless people comfortable; it's about encouraging them to better their lives for themselves. Who ever wrote that comment was only thinking on the surface level and really needs to have some compassion for the less fortunate.

Sweet and Powerful
2008-04-08 22:28:15
I came across this site that sells sports stuff specifically for girls. It's pretty cool, and they have a lot of nice items. For instance... We have a girl on our team who can't seem to stay off the ground. She's always going in for the tackle and never backs down. Her ankles take such a beating. These would be great for the serious tacklers of any team. Check out the rest of their website here.

What Happens When You Follow the 5 Alternatives
2008-04-08 21:58:06
Alright, so I gave you a list of 5 Great Alternatives to Writing a College Paper. Well, I used a few of them. Here's what happens when you take the Alternatives too seriously... I had to leave for a trip at 2 on Friday. The English paper I had been putting off had to be e-mailed by midnight. Unfortunately, traveling meant no internet connection, which meant that I had to send in my paper before 2. Because I had been making use of the 5 Alternatives, I had not finished the paper when I went to my 1:00 class - English... I actually had the nerve to finish it in her class. Except that I still couldn't get it finished before 2. The final result was a great paper with a half-completed works cited page. (Not finishing a works cited page means that some sources were not given credit for thier i

Can Summer Really Be Here?
2008-04-10 20:50:00
With only 4 weeks until the collegiate summer begins, I struggle to believe that summer is an existing season this year. It's now April and I still have to pull out the winter coat 4 days a week. I mean, instead of April showers, I'm seeing April sleet. That's just not right. What's up? I'm sick of freezing temperatures, wooly socks, and frost. Bring on the sweat, tank tops, and pollen! (When an asthmatic begs for pollen, you know she's desperate.) I feel better now, so I think I'm going to go do another paper. Oh, joy... By the way! I got AIM!!! My screenname is SoccerChicaFan. If you ever get bored or curious as to what I'm like outside outside of my blog, just shoot me a message. I'd be glad to get to know some of my readers!

AIM on SoccerChica.com
2008-04-21 18:36:22
Hey everyone! I mentioned in a past entry that my AIM screenname is SoccerChicaFan. Well, now you don't have to download AIM to be able to talk to me!!! If you scroll down the main page and watch the left sidebar, you'll notice a big blue box underneath the Google Ads. You type in that box, and I'll get it on my AIM. We can chat, even though you aren't on AIM and I'm not on soccerchica.com. Kind of cool, huh? Well, that's all I have for now. I'm swamped with this being the last week before Finals Rest Week (the week before finals when professors aren't allowed to have any assignments due). Then finals. Then summer. 3 months of nothing. Sweet.

Summer at Last!
2008-05-19 12:30:25
Summer is here, and not a moment too soon. After days of exams, I was ready to move out of my dorm room and head home. Looking back on my first year of college, it was everything that I expected it to be and more. It was stressful but I had a lot of fun along the way. Now that I'm home, I've jumped right back into all that I do here. I spent the weekend staffing a camp for Boy Scouts and Cub Scou

A New Phase for Soccer Chica and soccerchica.com
2008-06-21 13:31:37
Hey there, all! I'm still learning my way around the new site. I really like the layout. We had to take off the AIM application; it was slowing things down a lot. Alright, so now that most of the transformation of soccerchica.com is finished, I'm going to pick up where I left off. I'll get back to writing every now and then. I'm leaving for camp tomorrow morning. I won't be back until Saturday eve
