Evolution of Microsoft Word for Windows (1989-2007)
2008-03-08 01:41:12
Prior to 1989, Microsoft Word was originally a DOS application with complex set of commands. It was later added with more graphical features but only available for Mac OS. The first Word for Windows appeared in 1989 and was designed for Windows 3.0.When Word version 2.0 was released as part of Microsoft Office 3.0 in 1992. Word became the market leader which was partly due to major competitor, WordPerfect, failed to produce Windows version. You can see that most of the basic features we use today are already in Word 2.0.Office 4.0 was released in 1994. Word was called Word 6.0 at this point despite the fact the previous version number was 2.0. The purpose was to use common version numbering with the Mac OS version. Word 6.0 is the first version of Word that I used, I was still a primary sc

Usability in UI design - What is the best practice?
2008-03-06 22:45:28
Source: stuffthathappens.comThe comparison is unfair since the purpose of the applications is different. Nevertheless, how do we use the 3rd screen? It seems to save a record, we need to click Apply to end edit mode, then click Save to save record then click Okay to dismiss the form?? It is common to see business applications with unnecessary complexity.I guess the common approach is to have a Customer list plus a pop-up edit form after select a record. Recently, I rolled out the new version of my application to clients. The biggest change I made from previous version is allow the users to edit directly on the data grid listing but I keep the pop-up edit forms for 'backward-compatibility'. After visiting several clients across Malaysia, I am surprised to find out that no one uses the pop-

Playing retro games without DosBox
2008-03-03 23:35:03
DosBox is great but it can fail miserably in Windows Vista which require PC reboot. Sometimes, adjusting the configurations or patching the games are frustrating process too. That is why I never play any retro games since I switched to Vista - until I found this website - Nintendo8.com.This website allows you to play Nintendo 8 bits games online, without download anything. In other words, I am free from the problems I just mentioned above. Best of all, the games are available for free. The bad thing is, only Nintendo games are listed. You cannot play old days PC games like Xenon 2, Nightmare on Elm St, etc. Having said that, many DOS games have Nintendo version too. So you still can play Prince of Persia, Double Dragon and many others.

Nokia Concept Phone: Morph
2008-02-27 23:46:16
Morph is Nokia 's current research on nano-technologies.Several characteristics of this concept phone:-The surface is dirt repellent - good for careless usersAble to recharge from solar energy - if it runs out off power middle of the day, just expose it to sunlightDetachable and stretchable - expand it to reveal mini-keyboard, fold it back into normal phone, wear it as a watch.....Buttons on the keypad are transparent in colour - you can see through itSensing - I can't see the usefulness of this feature, does the phone change colour according to surrounding or what? Context dependent 3D keypad buttons - the physical buttons are embossed on the surface - not 3D graphics showing on the screen. The most interesting is the buttons change according to context - e.g. button is flatten to disable

Pakistan causes worldwide YouTube outage
2008-02-27 06:03:38
Last Friday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) ordered ISPs to block access to YouTube .com because of anti-Islamic movies. A PTA official said the ban concerned a Dutch movie trailer portraying Islam as fascist and prone to inciting violence against women and homosexuals. The block was intended with Pakistan only.Pakistan Telecom directed requests for YouTube videos from local Internet subscribers to a "black hole," where the data was discarded. Pakistan Telecom's mistake was that it then published that black hole route to its international data carrier, PCCW Ltd. (Hong Kong).PCCW accepted that route and started directing requests from its customers for YouTube data to Pakistan. And since PCCW is one of the world's 20 largest data carriers, its routing table was passed along to

Adobe AIR vs Microsoft Silverlight: A developer's perspective
2008-02-27 02:29:38
Adobe AIR is competing with Microsoft Silverlight in RIA domain. Adobe AIR is released a few days ago, so it is one step ahead than Silverlight 2.0. Basically, from developer perspective, both technologies offer different paradigms. AIR is helping web developers to make desktop applications using ActionScript etc. While Silverlight is better for desktop app developers to move towards RIAs using XAML + code behind approach - the .Net 3.0 way. Web designers and developers will probably prefer AIR because of familiar development environment. In addition, Adobe AIR SDK is available for Windows and Mac platforms. Silverlight has poor support for development on Mac - I am not aware of any decent Silverlight IDE tool is available for Mac OS yet. Putting aside the lack of OS support issue, I

Cloudo: Technology that will change your digital life
2008-02-24 03:22:31
Cloudo is taking a step further than gOS by putting an entire operating system in your web browser!! In other words, Cloudo is an Internet Operating System - bringing the whole desktop experience to web browser.Imagine that you have signed up on Cloudo, all your applications or files are actually hosted on the web. Hence, you can access your data from anywhere as long as you are connected, eliminate the need to bring your laptop along. You can access you same files using your home PC, from your school / office PC, and your mobile phone too! Maybe even Xbox 360. YouTube Desktop - not really a desktop application
2008-02-23 22:43:23
I was googling for YouTube desktop application - an application that allow me to search, view and download YouTube videos. Unfortunately, I didn't find such integrated applications. However, I came across this one - iDesktop.iDesktop is actually not a desktop application but trying to bring desktop experience to a web application. Technically speaking, this is one of the best AJAX web applications I have seen so far. You can drag and drop, minimize, and resize the videos (yeah, somthing YouTube.com does not have). The most important feature is the ability to build a playlist. You can drag videos from search results to a player to build a playlist - easy but powerful.Another key feature is ability to download the video. Unlike many softwares which simply download the FLVs (Flash videos), Yo

Japanese computer manufacturer, Zeus, introduced a new range of PCs. On the physical appearance, the CPU box is wrapped in platinum or gold colour. The casing is encrusted with diamonds which are arranged to resemble constellations. Inside, it is equipped with 3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 256MB GeForce 8400S graphics card, 1 terabyte SATA drive, 2GB RAM, and Blu-ray / HD-DVD optical drives. It comes with Vista Ultimate, too. I am curious how many units are sold to date.Source: Zeus Computer (Japanese language)

Excellent Blog Design
2008-02-21 06:58:29
I like these two design: both contain aesthetic page layouts. With reasonable amount of spacing, the content is easy-to-read, and the search box is located at obvious place too.I saw this kind of map+photo blog before, it is really innovative. This example is integrated with Google Maps...Source: Smashing Magazine (Feb 2008, Nov 2007, Aug 2007)

However I don't know the difference between RealVNC and UltraVNC, only heard that UltrVNC is better than RealVNC.

Suitable for minimalistd) Macfox II graphite - My favourite Mac themee) Vista Firefox beta - Vista theme for Firefox. Isn't it look better than IE7?2) Tab browsing add-onsa) Tab Scope - At first look, it is similar to thumbnail preview on Windows Vista taskbar. It adds 3D effect when you switch tabs. Sometimes the 3D effect does not work. In this case,

The future of personal health concept
2008-03-15 01:18:58
Here is a video clip ripped from the MIX'08 webcast (hence the video quality is not very good) showing the Microsoft's vision of personal health system. The whole idea is to attach systems and internet connectivity to any devices and any surfaces, including table surface. It is obvious this kind of 'seen only in movie' technology won't be realized in anytime soon. Also, I like the digital wallet concept as I hate to bring keep too many cards in my wallet.
