Misi Luki Banana Tree 2008-03-07 21:31:00 Today while watering the Misi Luki banana tree I noticed a little nub sticking from the ground. YES it is the first pup making an appearance. I have been anxiously awaiting this. This tree is much larger the the Ice Cream banana tree which already has 3 pups. My banana trees are growing so fast. Everyday I look and it seems like they keep spitting out new leafs. Here is the shot of the pup, and a shot of the new leaf that just finished opening today.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Pictures of My Little Paradise 2008-03-03 23:56:00 Here is a guided tour of my little piece of paradise. I have taken shots of all sides and a few others of some pretty neat stuff on the property besides all the orchids that are growing that I showed on some older posts. I am going to start with the SE corner standing from the road you come in on. This is the part that is nice with grass an some monster live oak trees. Then I follow the road around the south side to the west side of the property. These are the first 4 pictures. Now the St. Lucie River runs along the north side and east side of the property, although the east side is only 1 or 2 ft deep. So shot 5 is were the main part of the river branches off and comes under the road into the neighborhood. Then the next 3 shots are of the north side that the little branch follows and the Read more:Pictures

New Caryota Mitis Fishtail Palm in my yard 2008-03-03 18:08:00 My friend Timmy who is a yardman called me today and said that he was on a job and the man wanted this palm removed. He asked me of I wanted it. I said Heck Ya. So he dropped it off at about noon. I got home from work at 4:30 and started my hole. an hour later I have a new 15ft clustering fishtail palm in my yard. This thing was so heavy it took 4 of us to pick it up and move it. This cluster contains 8 large fat trunks and at least that many smaller trunks growing. I am so excited about my new Caryota mitis or clustering fishtail palm.Come Watch my Plants Grow
The Third Annual Florida Tech Botanical Fest Plant and Garden Sale 2008-03-02 20:29:00 Saturday I went with my buddy Aaron from A Yard in Fort Pierce Blog and we made the hour voyage north to melbourne to attend the 3rd annual FIT Botanical
Fest. This was a fantastic trip. The vendors had some unbelievable deals and some of the palm dealers had palm trees I had never even seen before. There is nothing better than a rare palm sale. So I did pick up a couple palms and orchids from the sale. The first palm is a rare Lantania lontaroides or Red Latan Palm , this guy as a young palm has very distinctive red stalk and red veins running in the leaves. The next palm is a Chambeyronia macrocarpa , or red leaf palm, flame thrower watermelon form and this palms new leaf is red when it first appears. It is given the term watermelon form because of the crown having a red tint to i Read more:Garden

Caryota Mitis Fishtail Palm seeds 2008-02-29 22:53:00 Tonight I planted 40 Caryota mitis of Fishtail Palm seeds that I collected the other day. They have gone through a 3 day hot soak and cleaning. These were collected off the ground so I am not sure how fresh they are but they all sank so hopefully I will have a good germination rate. I will keep you up to date on any new sprouts from these guys. This is a shot from the mom.Come Watch my Plants Grow
Floating Bismarkia seeds 2008-02-28 20:12:00 The absolute worst thing I could have wanted to see. I will start with how I always am looking for palm seeds. Bismarkia and Foxtails are tough to find in my area because they have not been here for that long, but I thought I had scored. A big mature female with a male not as old a few houses away had been fruiting. I talked to the man who lived at the house and asked him if I could collect some seeds. Of course the man said. So I filled my pockets with seeds off of the ground. I got home started to clean and soak them. This is what happened. Every single last 1 of them floated not 1 sinker. So once again I am looking for that 1 Bismarkia fruiting with viable seeds.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Cold Night in Paradise 2008-02-27 20:24:00 It's 48 degrees right now and dropping to 39degrees overnight. Dang thats cold. It rarely gets this cold here. I brought all the plants in for tonight and they say its gonna be that cold tomorrow also. So here is the collection in just a few shots. The Frangi is just starting to grow, the desert rose is starting to branch and here is a sneak peak at the seedling stand that is now about half filled. I have 46 tubes filled with sprouts. The last shot is the travelers sprouts. You can see the progression between them spike, just popping out of spike, and first leave coming out. Veitchia merrillii , Christmas Palm Sprouts 2008-02-25 01:06:00 Today in a tray that I had dropped 50 Veitchia merrillii , Christmas
Palm seeds in back in the middle of Dec. 07 I found 49 sprouted and broke the suface of the dirt. I spent about an hour trying to replant these in new pots. 25 made it into the seedling stand, and the other 24 were split up in between some 1 gallons an I planted some 3 and 4 bangers. Some how a Canary Island Date Palm seed made it in the tray, it also sprouted and actually had its 1st strap leaf on its way. Just a little added bonus.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Tillandsia fasciculata , Tillandsia utriculata Air Plants 2008-02-24 00:05:00 I have some of these Tillandsia fasciculata , or Quill-Leaf , Cardinal Air Plant , Wild Pineapple are some of the names I have heard these plants called growing on my property. The first shot has it in bloom with a bright red flower, the second shows 1 with pups attached to it. The third shot has a variety of air plants in bloom growing on an old live oak. How many blooms can you see. The last is a different air plant. This 1 is called Tillandsia utriculata , Giant Air Plant or Giant Wild Pine. It is one of the largest species of bromeliads in Florida. This plant grows a huge stalk out of the middle and as the bloom begins, the plant starts to die. Sadly, these plants are declining due to the Mexican Bromeliad Weevil attack, as well as habitat destruction and some collecting, and are n Read more:Plants

Chinese Fan Palms , Livinstona chinensis 2008-02-21 22:52:00 The 3 gallon pot of Livistona chinensis, Chinese
Fan Palms that I purchased this weekend for $15.00 finally got separated. This was a project trying to separate the root ball without damaging any of the roots. I think I did a pretty good job not breaking any of the big healthy roots. When I pulled these out it seemed to be a total root ball with barely any dirt in the pot. I could not image planting this many of these palms in a small clump like they were in that pot. When it was all said and done my $15.00 bought me 13 of these palms. I planted 5 in the yard. And then repotted the rest. 2, 3-gallon - 2 bangers, 3, 3-gallon singles, and 1 baby 1-gallon.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Bismarckia nobilis Bismark 2008-02-19 21:52:00 Bismarckia Nobilis also called Bismarck has a silver color to it. The frawns are very large and in my opinion 1 of the toughest looking palms around. I have a couple picture of these from around town. I found 1 the other day that had seeded. The man was outside so I asked if I could collect some and he said sure. So I filled my pockets. SCORE This is 1 of my favorite palms. Here are a few shots of this big palm tree.Come Watch my Plants Grow
Wild Encyclia tampensis Butterfly Orchid 2008-02-18 23:02:00 Update. I want to thank all the people that have filled me in on all the information on my find. They have been identified as Encyclia tampensis or Butterfly
orchids. Now the best part is i went back this past weekend and found that there were 5 seperate orchid colonies on that spot on the Live Oak Tree. 2 of the colonies are over 12" wide and at least 7" across. 1 colony is 8"wide and 5" across. and the last 2 are new baby colonies that are just a few bulbs each. I was told that they should bloom in my area in May and June so new spikes should be on there way pretty soon and there are "zillions of different color forms ranging from green-on-white to orange to nearly solid red-bronze and they're all nicely fragrant"(thanks Settled Soul ). I am very excited to see what colors come out this

Then the last was a variegated pink lemon tree. Yes pink lemons. The inside of the lemon has a pink pulp and leaves are variegated. This is an unbelievable tree.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Wild Florida Orchids 2008-02-15 21:32:00 Today I had a chance to get over to my property for a quick checking. What did I find on the first live oak I looked at. Well besides over 20 different air plants there were some big wild Florida
orchids growing on the trunk right at the bottom of the tree. So I snapped a few shots for all of you. I know orchids 2 days in a row but this was very unexpected. WOW I only got to look a the first tree. There must be at least 8 more huge live oaks on the property so maybe there will be a lot more. It is against the law to collect any FL orchids but this tree will be in the front yard 1 day when I finally can afford that dream house. I am very excited about the find a the potential of how many more there could be. I hope to make it back this weekend. The first shot is a view from the street, the Read more:Orchids
