Spathoglottis Orchids 2008-04-14 21:00:00 Over the weekend we stopped by a local nursery that will sometimes get in some rare finds. The stuff you never see at the local box stores. Well the nursery had just received a new shipment in. They had received a few Spathoglottis ground orchids. So we were quick to grab them and it is a good thing we did because some people that came in after us were trying to get them also. We bought 3 pots of orchids each one being different. The first is a 3 gallon pot of Spathoglottis plicata which has light lavender color. The next is another 3 gallon pot of Spathoglottis gracilis plicata "Penang Beauty" this flower has a yellow with purple blush. The last is a 1 gallon pot of Spathoglottis ungiculata "grapette" which does not have any blooms, but the nursery owner kept 2 3 gallon pots of these gra Read more:Orchids
Plumeria Frangipani 2008-04-16 01:13:00 Tonights post is on my Plumeria or Frangipani. I received this clipping from my friend Aaron over at A Yard in Ft Pierce back in the beginning of Feb. He has a large old specimen in his yard. It over hung into the neighbors yard so we decided to trim those branches off and use them for clippings. Aaron has quite a few of these in his yard now. This is the 1 I have been growing. It is a large piece with four blooming stalks this bloom. I have a slide show of the progress of this from dormant stage to my first blooms. The other day when the first 2 flowers opened I lost 1 of them 5 hours later to the crazy wind we have been having. Also it is suppose to get down to the mid 40's tonight so we brought all the chids' inside. Here are a few pics of the bumper pool room turned into the orchid room

My Palm Tree Sprouts and Seedlings 2008-04-17 00:13:00 Tonight's post has been 3 months in the making. Palm Trees are the beginning cause to my gardening addiction. To keep from getting things to confusing I am going to do a few posts in a row to show the progress of my different palms. This first post is going to show the growth of the entire seedling rack that my friend J Lead-Lo and I built for the seedling pots I purchased. The first picture are some of the palm seeds I started on 1/10, then we have the collars and pots the day they came in the mail 1/20, next is 2/13, the night we finished the seedling stand. Now the first Phoenix canariensis , Canary Island Date Palm ,or for typing purposes CIDP , seedlings move in on 2/14. Now for the sad part of the project. Cuttin' and pastin' all the pictures into the proper folders I lost the 2/20 Read more:Sprouts
Encyclia tampensis or Butterfly orchids in Spike 2008-04-19 00:27:00 I have an update on the clusters of Encyclia tampenisis , or Butterfly
Orchids that are growing on my oak tree. While I was at my property exploring I took a few pictures of the orchids growing. It was a little difficult due to there location, but if you click on the first picture and look I can count at least 5 spikes in that 1 clump. Along with some new ferns opening up. This is very exciting for me because I have never seen them bloom before. The first neighborhood picture is across from my property, and the second shows the back of my property. Then I have a few other shots from the neighborhood of a few Cardinal Air Plants in bloom.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Serenoa repens , Silver Saw Palmetto 2008-04-18 23:18:00 Exploring in the neighborhood, I came across this Serenoa repens , or Silver
Saw Palmetto. I have seen lots of these saw palmettos and silver saw palmettos, but there are a couple in my neighborhood that are really silver. This clustering silver palm stands out from the crowd. The trunks will normally stay under ground until they get some age to them and then emerge and can grow a trunk 20ft long. When I was looking at this palm I noticed several different shoots from the 1 main clump. Some of the shoots were 10ft away from the main 1. There were several small palms growing so I broke off 4 different chunks which all had started growing there own roots, and gave 2 to Aaron over at A Yard in Ft Pierce. Then I potted mine up so I could nurse them past the transplant shock. The first couple pi
Coccoloba uvifera 'Albo-variegata' Variegated Sea Grape 2008-04-21 00:49:00 My first post for the new plants is on this Coccoloba uvifera ' Albo-variegata ' or Variegated Sea Grape
. It has been top on my list of wants. But it is very expensive for just a small clipping. I have seen them for as much as $95 for a piece that is only 2 ft tall. 1 of the vendors had 2 very nice size Variegated Sea Grapes for $50 each. After lots of though Aaron and myself decided to split it. So we pooled together $48 and she took it. Now we will let it grow and then divide it. Today the lady told us if we would like we can bring it down to her propagation house and she would divide it for us if we wanted for free. Aaron does have a several normal Sea Grapes in the yard so we are going to practice on some of those first and see if we can be successful at propagating them are selves.
Heathcote Botanical Gardens Sale 2008-04-20 20:22:00 Anticipation has been building for a few weeks for this event. The one I attended back in Nov 07 was my first real plant sale as a new plant guy. This sale is were most of my first plants and palms came from. Sat. came and Aaron from AYiFtP , his mom, and myself got up early so we could go to breakfast before the plant sale opened. My fiancee, Monique is going for her Masters and had to go to school instead of being able to go. So we made it to breakfast and the diner messed my order up, by the time I got it,ate it, and paid for it was time for the sale to open. We take off and as I am turning on the road the plant sale is on, an undercover policeman pulled me over and said I was doing 58 in a 40. B.S. I have a 89 ford p.o.s. truck with no overdrive. Learning about all the different types of dessert bananas, the tastes between them, and since my other 4 bananas seem to be thriving in my yard I decided it was time to add 4 new ones. I only paid $10 a piece for these, 2 came from 1 vendor and 2 came from another vendor. These were all tagged at $15 each but that Sunday afternoon pass through produce some great deals and these were some of them. Chamaedorea metallica , Metallic Palm , Miniature Fishtail 2008-04-21 23:28:00 The Chamaedorea metallica , or also called the Miniature Fishtail Palm , and the Metallic
Palm. This little guy generally will grow to 3-4 ft and love the shade. They call it the Metallic Palm because of its leaf color. The leafs will form a blue-green color and a very distinct metallic sheen to them. This well-known and much loved palm is an endangered species and the only known palm with leaves having a blue-green metallic sheen. The metallic luster shows up particularly well when the leaves are moist.I purchased 2 pots of these from 2 different vendors. The single was $10 and the 3 palm pot was $17.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Palm Tree Pictures 2008-04-24 00:13:00 Today I spent driving around with Aaron from AYiFP from job to job and came across some pretty nice palm trees that I took some pictures of. We also made a pass by McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach Fl, but they were closing. They did have some sweet stuff outside though and I took some pictures there also. I have a slide show to show off a few of the palms and then I am going to do a few individual posts on some others palms from outside of Mckee Gardens that were pretty interesting. If you click on the picture it will give you the big picture, but you have to allow pop-ups from this site.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Orange Bird of Paradise , Strelitzia reginae 2008-04-23 00:40:00 This is the first Strelitzia reginae , or Orange
Bird of Paradise
in my yard. It has 1 flower on it right now. It has a unique flower, resembling a brightly colored bird in flight. Due to the shape of its leaves, it was once classified in the banana family. The plant will grow to a height and width of about five feet. It has a trunkless, clump-forming pattern of growth. The thick, stiff, concave leaves grow to about six inches wide and 18 inches long. They are attached to a long stalk that sometimes reaches five feet in length. Born on the same stalk, the flower is a spectacular blossom. Modified leaves, at the end of the stalk, form canoe-like structures, four to eight inches long, from which flowers emerge. As they open, pointed petals of brilliant orange are contrasted with an arrow s

Mounted Phal. Naples nights x (Petite rose x Glad melinda) 2008-04-24 21:44:00 I purchased 2 of these Phalaenopsis Naplesnights
x (Petite
rose x Glad melinda) which also have mottled leaves, along with a Dendrobium Cathey Beck, and a Encyclia Atronecium 'Mother's Day' x Enc. cordigera 'Chocolate Violets for an orchid growing project on orchidgeeks . The best part about the project so far is I have the first spike growing. Here is my first project for the growing project. I took a coconut and with a machette I split it in half leaving 1 side still attached. Then I took orchid moss and let it soak in some worm tea water. I drilled a couple holes so I could tie the phals down in the coconut shell. Then I placed each 1 in each side being careful to pack plenty of moss in between the roots. It also has a new little plant growing off of it. This vanda was in full bloom when it was purchased. It was so hot that day that the blooms began to wilt in the car. This was a Heathcote Sale purchase last week for $25. I wound up buying 3 vandas from this dealer. His plants were very large and healthy and he only was asking $25. I have seen plants this size selling at orchid shows for $45 and more. He also threw in a bottle of fungicides for my chids'. Here are the pics from the first new vanda.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Foxtail Palm Tree Seed Score! Wodyetia bifurcata 2008-04-28 20:22:00 Finally, after searching yard after yard it has finally been located. The seeding Foxtail Palm Tree, Wodyetia bifurcata ! This is 1 of those palms were there are a lot of them here, but none seem to be old enough to produce fruit yet. Well on a venture to a friends house I turned the corner and there it was. Seeds on the ground, fruits on the tree, this was the 1st time seeing a Foxtail palm tree fruit, it was a spectacular site in my eyes. The fruits are the size of a large plum and the seed inside is almost the size of a walnut. Since we are talkin Foxtail I bought this little seedling for $1 at the Heathcote sale. This seedling helped me with placing my seeds that I had collected in the rightspot in the pots. I also repoted the seedling. Here are all of my pictures.Come Watch my Plan Read more:Score

Bismarckia nobilis , Silver Bismarck Palm , Bismark Palm Pictures & Slideshow 2008-05-02 00:49:00 This is one of the top palms on my list of coolest palm trees. This Madagascar native, Bismarckia nobilis , or Silver
Bismarck stands out! Some have more blue/silver coloring than others. Some can be almost white. The leaves a very stiff, heavy and have a waxy coating, especially the blue/silver form- waxy coating can be rubbed off with your hand to expose the green leaf beneath. These palm trees have one of the most massive and impressive crowns of all the palms, and fairly fast growers here in FL. In my opinion one of the toughest looking palms around. These pictures are nice specimens from around town. These first 2 show how the Bismarck stands out over all the other trees. These are the Bismarcks that are growing in my yard.
