PSLOS Orchid Show pictures 2008-03-09 22:54:00 This past weekend The Port St Lucie Orchid Society had its 15th annual Orchid Show and Sale. Being new to this plant and flower thing this is my first orchid show and all I can say is WOW! They had some outstanding floor displays, and the vendors designed tabletop displays set up all through out the room. I have a few pictures of the displays. I can not believe how extraordinary orchids are. The many varieties and each one has its own characteristics from the different fragrances, sizes, colors, and pedals. I made some adoptions expanded the collection but those will come later. So for now here are those shots of the show. Click on the picture for a large shot so you can see some of the many different varieties.Come Watch my Plants Grow
$5.00 Palm Trees 2008-03-17 09:14:00 On Sunday I was driving down US1 and a guy with a couple trailers of palm trees was on the side of the road. I pulled in and he had an entire trailer full of roebelenii palms or Pygmy Date Palms, a trailer full of majestic palms, and the last trailer was split with coconuts and chinese fans. The man said $6.00 each or 2 for $10 but cash only. So with $30 in my pocket I came home with 4 coconuts palms and 2 of the roebelenii's. The guys on the side of the road are always so cheap. You just have to keep your eyes peeled for them.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Seed Room 2008-03-17 00:34:00 Well my seed starting has reach a new plateau. My first seed box turned into seed box 2.0, and now seed box 2.0 is being replaced with seed room 3.1. I have taken over the little bathroom that is in the efficiency attached to my house. It has a little shower stall in that I am using for the snap tite containers and ziplock baggies, and some shelves that fit perfect in between the wall and toilet for all the humidity dome trays and take out containers. I have a little heater fan and a thermometer in the room so I can maintain the temperature.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Bamboo Palm 2008-03-15 22:15:00 I was at a friends house Friday night having dinner and a few drinks. Checking out his yard I came across a section of very nice bamboo palms. I ask for a few seeds and they gave me a bag and said take as many as you want. I collected a couple stalks of seeds. Tonight I am starting 2 snap tite containers 1 with the little green not quite ripened seeds and another with the large black color seeds just like they are off the tree. I also have about 40 of the in a hot soak right now and plan on starting those tomorrow. I have pictures of the palm tree and the stalks with seeds. Then a shot of the seeds in a tin, and finally a shot of the containers in the seed room. These are the 2 containers on the bottom shelf.Come Watch my Plants Grow

Zygo Everspring 'Noland Van Dallen' AM/AOS 2008-03-18 22:26:00 Yesterday I came home to find the Zygo Everspring 'Noland Van Dallen' AM/AOS orchid had blown over in the crazy wind we have had for a few days. This normally would not be that big of a disaster but this plant has 2 spike just about to bloom. One of the spikes broke. Not off completely it is still attached just limp. So my friends on OrchidGeeks gave me advice on trying to save it. So I took some florist tape and a little splint and wrapped the spike. Then I put a little stake in the pot to help support it. The stake is very disappointing because the spikes were holding themselves up very nicely. Oh Well. So as of tonight the 1st bloom has opened on the spike that is not broken.Come Watch my Plants Grow
3 Orchid for $20 2008-03-20 22:42:00 I just can not pass the people on the side of the road without stopping anymore. Today down in Jensen Beach on US1 a lady in a ryder truck was on the side of the road selling orchids 3 for $20.00. I try not to buy orchids in bloom but these were a great deal. She had Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids none of them had id tags though. So if anyone can id these please let me know. The ones I bought have a lot of blooms still to open. I bought 2 Phalaenopsis they are the 1's closest to you in the photo one has a smaller flower and kinda of flops right at you. The other phal is the red flower with2 blooms open. The the last is the Dendrobium to the left of the phals. It has the large pink and white flowers. This plant collecting has become an addition.Come Watch my Plants Grow

OMG Can you say Addicted 2008-03-21 23:32:00 OK. This is getting out of control. Tonight my fiancee and I were going to have dinner at her bosses house. Which of course is in Jensen Beach. Well the lady was still set up with her 3 for $20 orchids but now she had new 1's. So my girl had to buy some. Some = 6 new Phals. With 1 going as a gift it seems that we have added 5 more to the collection. I am going to have to take a count tomorrow to see if we have broken 40. 40 OMG that is crazy. But the plus side is my palm addiction seems to be contagious. My girl loves taking care of the orchids. Here are a few shots of the 6 orchids for $40. Mounting an Orchid to a Palm Tree Slab 2008-03-27 22:09:00 My 2 favorite things coming together palm trees and orchids. At the beach a few weeks ago I found a palm tree decaying away. I seemed to be decaying from the inside out. I thought this might be a pretty sweet mount for an orchid. So I grabbed a few pieces and brought them home. The first thing I did was soak them in clean water for 2 days trying to remove any bugs and help remove any salt left from the ocean. I allowed them to dry in the sun for almost a week before I tried to mount any orchids to it So they seem to be very fiberous and have a very nice curve to them so the orchid should be happy. I mounted 2 small Dendobiums to 2 pieces and the other receive a large Cattleyas Haleahi Serenity. I added a little spaghnum moss in between the roots and slab to help hold some moisture in for Read more:Mounting

Exciting Stuff Happening this Week 2008-04-01 21:58:00 Over the past weekend many exciting things happened and with my Everglades fishing trip coming up this weekend I plan to have even more exciting stuff to talk about when I get back. So on Sat. I went to a garage sale and met a very nice lady named Marge. She and her husband had a spectacular yard. They have some pretty nice stuff. Rare Palms a few different Pandanus's, cypress trees, bamboo, orchids, the list just goes on and on. We talked and she has invited me back to take pictures. So next week I am going over there and should get some interesting pictures. While I was there I bought some variegated Pandanus veitchii clippings and some unknown green pandanus with huge leafs. The mother plant had 3 ft of trunk and 20 ft leafs. They had huge patches of these Pandanus's. Then she had baske Read more:Happening
Resident Alligator 2008-04-01 00:34:00 Today, I was at my property and the resident alligator made an appearance. I have a few pictures some good some not so good. When I first saw him his body was out of the water. But when I got close enough for some good close ups he submerged down so only the snout was out of the water. The entire time I was snapping shots he never took his eyes off of me. I would change spots and he would turn just enough so he could see what I was doing. On Thursday I leave for a 4 day fishing trip down in the Everglades. I am bringing my camera and camcorder. Hopefully when I get back on Sunday I will have lots of new footage and pictures of the Everglades National Park and the wildlife inside. Oh and also come home with a lot of fish!Come Watch my Plants Grow

$32 of Disappointment 2008-03-31 22:19:00 I have been anticipating an ebay purchase in the mail. I bought 50 plumeria seeds, 40 Rhapis subtilis seeds, and 5 Eulophia graminea orchid bulbs from a seller in Thailand, Well the package was in the mail box today. And this what was inside. Growing instructions for plumeria seeds and a US Dept. of Ag. Mail Interception Notice. No seeds...no bulbs...just $32 growing instructions on some seeds I don't have. I guess the seller did not send a pyto-sanitary certificate with the seeds and customs intercepted and then mailed my empty box to me. Man I wanted that stuff.Come Watch my Plants Grow

The Gardening Hot Spot! 2008-04-08 00:09:00 About a month or so ago I "stumbled upon" 1 of my new favorite websites. This gardening blog directory/tool has hundreds of gardening blogs to search through. This networking site allows you to set up a plot, add friends, add favorite blogs to your plot, and message each other. Not to mention the countless other ways to search from different regions all across the world to the actual content of the blogs. It becomes very addicting to find out how other people across the planet garden and the kind of plants they grow. I highly recommend this place if you have any interest in gardening. But take caution you can lose track of time very easily. If you do sign up make sure you stop by my plot and say hi. Here is a Link to my plot for anyone who would like to preview what it looks like. Everglades National Park 2008-04-07 22:03:00 After 4 days of fishing in Everglades National
Park I am back. Cooler full of fish and lots and lots of pictures. This was an annual fishing trip that my older brother, a friend of his, and myself take. We stay in Everglades City and fish a place called Chokoloskee which is basically the start of the 10,000 islands. It is miles and miles of mangrove islands, oyster bars, grass flats, bays, rivers, and of course the Gulf of Mexico. So there is no shortage of choices to fish. We had a great trip catching lots of snook, red fish, snapper, grouper, and trout. I have a few shots of some of the fish and wild life that I came across along with some scenery pictures.Come Watch my Plants Grow

We pulled up around 5:30 and I began looking at everything. It starts with a nice croton collection across the front of the house like a hedge, but no 2 are alike. Then there is island after island of different bromeliads. I have no idea what the names of each one is but I have lots of different pictures of these. I do know that in 1 shot it has a variegated pineapple and a clump of pandanus's. Ground orchids growing out of control. Palm trees galore a 3 year old Bismarck in the corner, a nice size trimmed phoniex relinada, a huge cluster of lady palms, 10 chinese fan pa Read more:House
More Banana Tree Updates 2008-04-10 21:35:00 It is amazing when you look at your plants growing everyday not much seems to happen. But you leave for a few days and it seems like they explode in new growth. When I got back from my trip there was new growth on all of the banana trees. Then the banana trees put out 2 new leaves each in just 4 days Just before I left on my trip I had 2 new pups on the Misi Luki, and 1 new pup on the Ice Cream. Now I have 2 pups coming up on the apple banana. The new pups are growing faster than any of the pups that have been there since I started on the ice cream banana. The new Ice cream pup has only been exsposed for 2 weeks and is taller and fatter than the 3 others that have been there for 5 months. Here are some different pictures of all the bananas. The first 3 are the Ice Cream banana tree, the fi
New NOID Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium Orchids 2008-04-11 23:21:00 While I was out of town my girl came home with 6 new chids'. These came from our 3 for $20 lady. Apparently my girl has a new friend because the lady threw in an extra orchid and a full spray can of leaf shine. The first white phal has 12 blooms on 1 spike 7 blooms on the other and has another spike growing with 2 blooms to open and still growing. Then the light yellow phal still has blooms to open. A pink phalaenopsis that blew over this week and broke a few flowers off. So this scared up flower is all that is left of the open flowers, but still has 4 blooms to go. Then a very light lavender /white Dendrobium. These little flower phals I am really digging. The are so petite . This is my 3rd small flower phal. And finally a green with purple lip dendrobium.
