How to Choose Between Two Related Keywords
2008-02-24 22:58:00
Choosing the right keywords can make or break your website's success in terms of search engine rankings. There are lots of keywords to choose from, and therefore it can be difficult to decide which keywords to select. This is especially true if the keywords are closely related. Two factors are important to look at when choosing between two similar keywords: Keyword Difficulty & Search Volume.Take, for example, the two keywords: "Hawaii wedding" & "Hawaii weddings". These keywords are almost identical. However, they have very different keyword difficulty and search volume scores. "Hawaii wedding" is a more difficult term to rank for, but has a lower search volume. By contrast, "Hawaii weddings" is easier to rank for, but has a higher search volume.Select Keywords with Lower Difficulty but H

Beware of SEO Over-optimization
2008-02-15 15:08:00
SEO Over-optimization occurs when your site ranks highly for keyword phrases which aren't really in your target market. For example, if your site is designed to target "Hawaii weddings," but you rank highly for "Wedding photographers in London," then it is possible that your site is "overoptimized" or "mis-optimized."At first glance, you would think that ranking highly for cities that aren't your target market would be good. "It's great," you think. "This way, I'll get way more traffic from these other markets."Unfortunately, as SEO specialists, we know that all traffic isn't the best traffic. At the end of the day, what matters most in terms of SEO is: How well did we get the traffic in need of your services to your site. In short, I'd rather have 10 tightly-targeted visitors who convert

Fractal Semantics & SEO
2008-01-08 22:24:00
What Is Fractal Semantics?Fractals are repeating patterns discovered within random sequences. They are well-known in mathematics and physics. Examples include the Mandelbrot Set, the Julia Set and Quantum Physics. Fractals also play a prominent role in contemporary mathematical and physical theories such as Chaos Theory and Godel's Incompleteness Theorem.Predictable patterns arising out of seeming randomness have also been discovered in studying DNA strands, in oracles such as the I Ching and Tarot, and in natural phenomena such as snowflakes, diamonds and crystals. What Is Semantics?Semantics is the branch of linguistics dealing with the structure and nature of meaning in language. Semantics involves noun-verb combinations, word-order, the meaning of punctuation and theories of interpretat

SEO Pragmatics
2008-01-06 15:22:00
A good SEO specialist will utilize the pragmatic method in his SEO work. That is, he will test, record data, make experiments, find out what works and what doesn't before publishing his results. SEO is not an exact science. Snytax, link building, meta tags...none of this is an exact science. Be wary of SEO "experts" who promise or guarantee results, rankings or traffic. The industry is always changing and expanding. As a result, there are very few set formulas to achieve anything. What we do as SEO specialists is look at trends, heuristics. We discoer methods that increase the probability that a particular site will get good rankings and traffic. But there are few guarantees. At Gnosis Arts, we try always to use the best practices of the industry as endorsed by leading SEO companies such a

AdSense...Ba- bye
2007-12-28 21:31:00
At the risk of diverting this site away from its intended purpose...I got a newsflash that I just gotta tell you folks about!Net Audio Ads: Pay Per Play, not Pay Per ClickClick HereDo I have THE web, blog money-maker for you. Please keep reading.Everyone knows about AdSense, right? Everyone also knows that AdSense is a waste of time, too. Unless you have a kabillion visitors to your site each day, you might make $13 in a year. (But you'll never see it, since they don't pay out anything less than $100). In short, AdSense sucks for the low to med traffic site. I know, I've worked AdSense every which way I could. I get nearly 200 visitors/day through all my sites combined...I've made like $11 so far. But now there's a new advertising boss in town. Enter NetAudio Ads. NetAudio is not PPC; it's

Affiliate Marketing at Its Best
2007-12-17 17:29:00
I found what I think is the best two affiliate marketing services on the web. Trust me, as an SEO professional, I scan through literally dozens of sites a day relating to SEO. As most of you know, most of these sites aren't really worth their salt. So, when I find a good one, I feel compelled to share it with you.The first is called MoreNiche. MoreNiche is good because they give you a $15 bonus - just for signing up. In addition, they give you an extra $10 just for creating a free website to advertise their products and services. But it gets even better! If you refer someone to the site, you get an additional $20 - per person. I've seen a lot of affiliate marketing programs, but I have yet to come across one that gives so many incentives without even making your first sale. To sign up at M

How to Evaluate Social Bookmarking Sites
2007-12-12 19:24:00
Over the past week I’ve looked a t literally dozens of social bookmarking sites. I found, however, that not all these sites are worthwhile. So, I started thinking about how to determine the value of a social book mark site. I thought I’d share my thoughts with you guys and get feedback. The five different kinds of social bookmarking sites: Those that are just for clipping web pages/back linking (e.g. furl, spurl, reddit, google notebook, shadows, etc) Those that are blog cataloging sites (e.g., mybloglog, blogcatalog, technorati) Those that are forum-driven sites (e.g., yahoo forums, freedavice.com, bigboards.com) Those that are video/image driven (e.g., flickr, youtube, aol video, yahoo video, esnips) Those that are news/content driven (e.g., newsvine, ehow, gather.com) Evaluating the

Google Analytics vs. Other Web Traffic Data Collection Metrics
2007-11-19 15:12:00
The consensus among SEO professionals is that no analytics software is 100 percent accurate. And in some cases not even 70 percent accurate. "So you have to take all data with a grain of salt and measure metrics in terms of percentages (and watching for trends) rather than using them for hard numbers," said a spokesperson from SEOMoz. JavaScript PositioningStudies done by SEOMoz specialists and other Search Marketing companies seem to indicate that Google Analytics (GA) tends to report higher traffic numbers than other web analytic applications. They surmise that this is due in part to the placement of the JavaScript code on the page. Google Analytics requires the user to place the code in the HTML header. While other programs and good SEO practice dictate that the code placed at the end,

Are You A Member of the Technorati?
2007-11-10 16:39:00
I love the name: Technorati . Makes me sound so...important, dangerous, mysterious. Are you a member of the Technorati? Technorati is undoubtedly one of the premeir blog catalog societies around. And you know what that means: Search engines pay attention to what the Technorati are doing. Ses know who's there, and who's not. So, if you want to increase your website traffic, you should be familiar with Technorati. Rand Fishkin, CEO of SEOMoz, uses Technorati inclusion as a determining factor to search engine popularity. And believe me, Fishkin knows. As the head of probably a million dollar SEO company, his opinion counts. Fishkin also includes Internet companies like DMOZ, WikiPedia and Alexa as his top dawgs. To learn more about Technorati, visit my Technorati Profile

Search Baiting?
2007-10-22 14:22:00
Link BaitingYou'll often hear SEO folks talk about link baiting. Link baiting refers to methods and strategies to persuade web users to put a link to your site on their own. What Is Search Baiting?Lately, though, I've been toying around with the concept of search baiting. In my conception, search baiting would refer to strategies to lure web searchers away from their intended search targets to yours. These would be web searchers who are searching for products, services, markets or ideas that are more or less loosely associated with your own.For example, say you're searching for Gel pens. I sell BIC pens. Through the use of certain techniques, I try to lure you from your original search target (Gel pens) to my search target (BIC pens).Sound simple? Well, it is - in theory. But how would it

2008-03-20 07:56:00
Well, the annual Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference is going on right now in NY, and I got a chance to attend for the very first time. I was so excited! Getting to go to this prestigious event was a once-in-a lifetime experience. The Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) - one of the largest SEO professional organizations in the word - was there, of course. Board member Sara Holoubek heads up the NY chapter of SEMPO. A marketing consultant for some of the top marketing firms in the world, everyone who's anyone in search marketing knows Sara, the "aspiring luminary" (and she's a cutie, to boot!)Sara Holoubek, SEMPO board member, and I at SES NY 2008Other notables were representatives from Google, Yahoo & DoubleClick; the ClickZ Network; Search EngineWatch; Trel

Beware of SEOver-optimization Pt. II
2008-04-05 15:21:00
SEO Over-optimization can occur when an SEO simply tries to hard to improve SERPS. When you're constantly building links, constantly revising content and code, you throw up red flags to the search engines. Remember that there algorithm programmers are an army of Ph.D.s who are pretty clever in their ways. Any SEO that appears to be a little too artificial or forced can cause negative repercussions in terms of Page Rank, authority score, trust score and SERP. Best practice SEO means that you building the credibility and value of a site by an organic progress, not an artificial one. The more natural, or organic, your website growth and promotion is, the better chance you stand of getting the best SERPs.In light of this, it's good sometimes to just take a "chill" from SEO work sometimes.
