Lair of the Bookworm: Legi Aut Mori Version 0.5 2008-02-24 18:12:00 Ram Upgrade 8Originally uploaded by Bitterjug I've been working on the template for a while, and today I added a 'Read More' option using Hackosphere's Selective Expandable Post hack.I'm not really sure whether I like it or not yet, so I'm asking you, dear reader, what you think. Did you like it better before or after the addition of the 'Read More...' link? Let me know in the comments!
Why We Read Fantasy 2008-02-23 16:35:00 Sci-Fi FantasyOriginally uploaded by Phillie Casablanca Every time I go to the bookstore, I always head to the fiction section, and, invariably, I leave the store with at least one new Fantasy book. The odd thing is, I never leave the store with more than one Nonfiction book. Odd? Well, not really.Top Selling books of All TimeEven though it differs from list to list, most lists have many fantasy books on it, such as at least one volume from the Harry Potter series. That should tell you something about the general population's taste in reading.Escapism & ImaginationOne of the main reasons that I love to read Fantasy so much is they provide an escape from the real world. Many of my friends and peers enjoy playing video games to achieve the same effect--but video games are not as inter
Review: Shade's Children (by Garth Nix) 2008-02-22 14:36:00 Garth
NixOriginally uploaded by catsprks Garth Nix, the man who brought you the the The Abhorsen Trilogy, now brings you a futuristic world full of children and no adults. But, as usual in Garth Nix's work, all is not as it appears. From the CoverThe cover features an eerie picture of three goblin-like creatures holding weapons posed to attack in a hallway with what appears to be corpses. When I first bought it, I was warned that it would be 'really really creepy'. Well, Nikki was certainly right when she said that--it doesn't get much more creepy than killing children and using their brains to power killing machines. The cover blurb is as follows:The Key To Survival Rests In The Hands Of Shade
's Children
In a futuristic urban wasteland, evil Overlords have decreed that no child shall live
The Worries of a Bibliophile 2008-02-21 06:00:00 Paris _ BibliophileOriginally uploaded by ktylerconk I don't know about you, but I tend to worry about my books a lot. It may be my OCD (or a combination of my bibliophilia and my OCD), but I sometimes find myself thinking about my books before I got to bed--mostly about they way that I shelve them.Since I worry about my books, I assume other bibliophiles do, too. So I'm going to help some of us alleviate those worries today by highlighting 4 of them.1. My books aren't shelved correctly!Just make sure to shelve them correctly--not to close together, but not too far apart. The best way to make sure you're shelving your books right is to see to make sure that they are not packed as tight as they can go. However, don't let them be too loose either (as the man in the picture above is doing)
What Does 'Legi Aut Mori' Mean? 2008-02-20 06:00:00 Toga Party, 1999Originally uploaded by GerryT As I'm sure you've noticed, the name of my blog has some rather strange words in it. Well, the words are my motto in Latin. Let me explain.I take Latin at my high school, and I've taken a great interest in it. Last year, in Latin II, we had to make a Roman aureus (coin) to represent what the coinage in Rome would look like if we were emperors (or empresses). The coins were to have our silhouettes and motto on one side, with a drawing on the other. I, with my love of reading, choose the Latin motto 'Legi Aut Mori', which means 'read or die'. The back of my coin had a scroll crossed with a sword.By the way, our Latin class wasn't as rowdy as the people in the picture, but we did wear togas on certain occasions.
Recommended Multimedia for Bibliophiles: The Librarian 2008-02-19 06:00:00 I Heart Dewey Decimal SystemOriginally uploaded by L. Marie Continuing my Recommended Multimedia
for Bibliophiles series, today we're going to talk about The Librarian: Quest for the Spear.Let's face it: librarians usually don't get glamorous roles in movies. In fact, librarians (and bibliophiles) are usually portrayed as women with horrible fashion sense. But, thanks to the Made for TV movie The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, that has all changed. The PlotThe plot is extremely similar to that of Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr. It centers around a man who is appointed librarian of the Metropolitan Library. What he doesn't know is that the library holds such items as the Ark of the Covenant, the Spear of Destiny, and Excalibur. As always, I don't want to give too much away, so you'll have

The Definition of Genius 2008-02-15 14:37:00 Well, according to The Blog Readability Test, you have to have the reading level of a genius to understand my blog. This site that does this scans the page for words that correspond to a reading level, so it changes from day to day. For example, when I did the test two days ago, it said that the reading level was Postgrad. The site is pretty interesting; it would be fun to see what reading level is needed to understand the the blogs listed on my Blogroll.

Review: The Anti-Valentine's Day Handbook (by J. More) 2008-02-14 06:00:00 | Valentine

.From the CoverWhen I first saw the cover of this book, I knew I'd enjoy it. The cover depicts cupid, face down and shot in the back with one of his own arrows. Above him (in construction site font) reads the title. The back cover blurb reads as follows:Valentine's Day = EVILThe Candy, the cards, the forced sentiment--it all just makes you want to punch something, doesn't it? Banned Books: Getting the Word Out 2008-02-13 15:21:00 Read a banned book todayOriginally uploaded by katmere This post may be a little late (or early) for the real BannedBooks
Week (the last week of September), but it's never the wrong time to think about censorship. You may notice the new banner in my footer, which says that I (heart) Banned Books. It came from a protest site.I myself have read quite a few banned books, and I think everyone should read at least one. Nobody has the right to ban books, let alone burn them. Everybody needs to remember that.
U Comment, I Follow: What Does it Mean? 2008-02-12 12:05:00 You may have noticed a new addition to my sidebar: the U Comment
, I Follow badge. What does the badge mean? Well, Blogger turns off the attribute that lets comments be used on Google to link to your page. In other words, it used to be that the link you put in your comment wasn't recognized by search engines, which gave you less link love, which means less SEO. That has changed now.I turned off the 'nofollow' attribute, so now every time you post a comment, the link that you put in your comment will help your pagerank on Google. The Future of Books is Not Kindle 2008-02-10 06:49:00 kindle frontOriginally uploaded by karindalziel Anyone who has used Amazon.com recently has noticed that they're trying to push their new product: the Kindle. They say it uses electronic paper, which, I admit, is a big improvement over previous eBook readers. They also say it can store 200 books, all in the size of a normal book. But is the Kindle really all it's cracked up to be?The eBook ControversyNow, I'll be the first to tell you that eBooks
are not all they're cracked up to be. I owned one myself, and just a year or so after my dad bought it for me, the company went out of business. That's more than $200 wasted on something that I'll never be able to use again. Not only that, but most eBook readers only support a given eBook file type. And nothing compares to holding a real book i Read more:Future

Valentine's Day: A Rant 2008-02-08 13:08:00 ...And Then Sometimes Valentine
's Day Sucks!Originally uploaded by Sister72 Note: I was going to publish this post on Valentine's Day, but, due to the blog redesign mentioned in the previous post, I decided to post it a week early, so I can get it out there for people to read.Every year, people like me are subjected to the horrors of Valentine's Day (or Singles Awareness Day, as I like to call it). The disgusting PDA, the full on makeout sessions that you have to maneuver around in the hall way at school, and those disgusting, horribly cutesy candy hearts. Is it too much to ask that you people keep it in your pants? For God's sake, do you realize how much misery you put singles like me through every single year? No? I didn't think so. Well, let me fill you in.The HeartacheThe only thing

What Happened to Panic! At the Disco? 2008-02-07 17:33:00 PB250097Originally uploaded by if you could, would you? A few weeks ago, I noticed something strange on Panic
! At the Disco's Myspace profile--they aren't Panic! At the Disco anymore; they're Panic At the Disco. Notice the lack of an exclamation point. But that isn't all that's changed. Yes, I'm afraid it's true: Panic! At the Disco has sold out. For the purposes of this post (and nostalgia), the exclamation point will be left in the name of the band. The Old Panic! At the DiscoJust two months ago, Panic! At the Disco still had only good music, they dressed uniquely, they actually had an exclamation point in their name, and they weren't peppy (like other bands out there). Yes, people (including a classmate of mine) have said that they sounded like Fall Out Boy. But, as far as I can tell,
What Is an Introvert? (Introversion: A Crash Course) 2008-02-06 20:25:00 IntrovertOriginally uploaded by Clearly Ambiguous Since I did a post to explain what bibliophilia is, I decided to explain what introversion is--and why introverts, 25% of the world's population, suffer so much. The Bad NewsAs I said before, introverts make up only 25% of the world's population. Not only that, but because extroverts are unable to understand us, we are the most opressed minority group in the world. Not only that, but most people think we're abnormal, anti-social, or crazy. We are not. And being an introvert is not a bad thing--the media tends to peg crazy people as 'loners', which just perpetuates these stereotypes. The Virginia Tech gunman was labeled as introverted by the media.8 Types: ISTJ, ISFJ, INFJ, INTJ, ISTP, ISFP, INFP, and INTP.The Good NewsAs introversion inc Read more:Crash Course

What Is Bibliophilia? 2008-02-04 18:38:00 Originally uploaded by Robert Brook You see the word bibliophilia a lot on this blog, and you probably don't know what it means. I'm here to tell you just what it is.What It Isn'tFirst of all, don't confuse bibliophilia with bibliomania. Bibliophilia, unlike bibliomania, is not an obsessive compulsive disorder. Although, bibliophiles may prefer the company of books to humans. It is not a sexual attraction to books--it has no connection with the other -philias, such as pedophilia or necrophilia. What It IsIt is the love of books "especially for qualities of format", as apposed to a bookworm, who just loves to read. A bibliophile loves to read, but they also love to collect books. I myself love to collect books, and I have over 200 books in my room, which isn't counting the 4,000+ books in
Review of The Spewker Blog 2008-02-03 18:57:00 Front page of The SpewkerA post from The SpewkerThe colors are a bit weird on this blog, and I don't really like the three columns template. But, I do like the original header and the fact that it (the blog) doesn't look anything like a normal Blogger blog.If I were this blog owner, I'd get rid of the advertisements and put more of my own personal content. Also, try and use less colors in the template--so many colors seems to make it look confusing and takes away from what could be a more complete look. All in all, it looks a bit crowded to me.This post brought to you by the Fair Review Project.
Why Football is Overrated 2008-02-03 15:43:00 No football colours allowedOriginally uploaded by wili_hybrid Since tonight is the night of Super Bowl XLII, I thought this would be appropriate. Those who know me know that I despise sports (for various reasons), and won't be surprised about this post. Others will be surprised, as I live in what some (in my opinion) way too rabid football fans call Steeler Country. Either way, I hate football. The FandomEverywhere I go, all people talk about is football (namely, the Steelers). It gets really annoying after you've lived in the area for a while, not to mention bothersome when all that your classmates talk about is sports. The MerchandiseEach day at school during football season, all I see are jerseys. My school even goes so far as to have Steeler Fridays when it's football season. Honestly Read more:Football
