Ghostbusters back on the job ?
2008-02-15 10:27:40
A local council in England used taxpayers' money to pay for a ghostbuster to exorcise a woman's home. Sabrina Fallon heard banging from her loft and called police. But when officers arrived and found no evidence of intruders, they joked her home was haunted. Psychic Suzanne Hadwin, 35, was paid by Easington District Council in County Durham to exorcise a poltergeist. She cut her usual fee of £300 to £120 and the council put up £60 towards the sum. Hadwin believes she has now rid the property of its malign spirit. A council spokesman said: 'This is the first time we have had to take such action.' source: Metro UK

The advertisement posters are intended to inform the travelers about the coming exhibition of German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder. That exhibition will be held in the famous Royal Academy museum in London. The Venus is a classic painting by Cranach, dating back to around 1530. The refusal by the Underground is " totally mad ", according to president on the Commission on Culture of the British Parliament, John Wittingdale. How about tax-deductible bribes ?
2008-02-14 09:08:16
The Tel Aviv District Court has ruled, in a precedent setting decision, that bribes amounting to $860,000 paid to government officials in a foreign country to promote a deal will not be considered an expense recognized for taxation purposes in Israel. Judge Magen Altuvia said in justifying his decision that, although the bribe was paid overseas and related to overseas activity, nevertheless, "the country's values do not stop at its borders; if bribe payments are allowed as an expense, the Israeli tax paying public becomes a partner in these  foul acts." Details of the company and the country involved were not allowed to be published, in order not to endanger the people concerned. The Tel Aviv District Court declared that even if a bribe is paid overseas, the count

Wasps ground Qantas flights
2008-02-11 09:24:09
A wasp plague has prevented three Qantas flights from taking off properly at the airport of Brisbane in Australia. This has become clear from a security report. The insects had made nests in parts of the Airbus A330-fleet of Qantas, as a result of which they disturbed the flight equipment. In one of the cases a plane had to make a stop while already taking off. This caused the brakes to overheat the tires, which in turn caused six out of eight tires to blow up. The airplane remained stranded on the tarmac. The pilot was forced to start the braking procedure while already traveling at a speed of 226 kph. In turn the brakes reached a temperature of 685 degrees. Since the incidents Qantas implemented a weekly wasp nest checkup on their fleet. read more here

Pregnancy makes women forget
2008-02-11 09:23:11
Researchers at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne have discovered some interesting stuff about pregnant women. The pregnancy is resulting in considerable amounts of amnesia. Scientists Henry and Peter Randell have tested the memories of thousands, both pregnant and non pregnant, women. The women carrying a baby appeared to have trouble remembering new information, unknown names and telephone numbers. Facts they had already known, however, they remembered without a problem. Strangely enough, the memories of the tested women did not appear to return to the old levels after the labour. The researchers are still clueless to as why this is the case. But they do expect that a pregnancy can influence the women’s cognitive skills a great deal. They also suspect stress, insomni

Want grandchildren ? Marry your cousin !
2008-02-11 09:20:01
Marriages between distant cousin s on Iceland seem to be far more productive then ‘normal’ marriages. On average more children and grandchildren are born as a result of marriages between men and women who are (distantly) related. This became clear after a study on the matter was published in the scientific magazine Science this week. Research was done under supervision of Agnar Helgason of biotech company deCode Genetics. A study was made on all marriages on the island between 1800 and 1965. Surprisingly marriages between cousins in the third and fourth grade came out on top of the fertility scale. The researchers involved in the study suspect a biological reason is behind these figures. These cousins probably benefit from affinity within the family as

Israeli football player 'scores' during halftime
2008-02-11 09:19:10
Although Israel lost the World Cup qualifying match versus Sweden in 1993 with 5-0, an Israeli player managed to score during the game. His name: Felix Halfon. “ We were already trailing Sweden 2-0 during halftime and Felix didn’t feel like listening to the coach’s pep talk. So he remained in the player tunnel and gave special attention to a Swedish woman “, says Shaul Eisenberg, former spokesperson of the Israeli Soccer Federation. Eisenberg recently finished his memoirs in a book and the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet featured the Halfon story. The player himself reacts rather indifferent: “ It wasn’t that special. By the way, I always carried a condom with me during matches. I put them in one of my socks.” What a visionary man Halfon i

Couple gets married during own funeral
2008-02-11 09:18:09
In Belgium a young couple was married during their own funeral. They had both lost their lives when their helicopter crashed. If it had not been for this tragic accident they were to be married later this year. The 24-year-old couple had been together 7 years and they originally planned to travel home by train. The helicopter was piloted by the father of the groom. A mother and sister were also aboard the helicopter when it crashed. Witnesses declared that the helicopter was probably brought down by technical failures. Priest Marc Messien honored the couple by placing a white ribbon across both coffins. This way a symbolic marriage was established. “The marriage might not be official, but this way we acknowledged the couple’s love for each other." the priest later said.
