Friday... Used To Be My Playground
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Coffee: Highlander GroggMug: Blogger FuelGood Morning! This morning I'm sipping some of the Highlander Grogg that IowaGeek sent me - another Thank You to Jody - it's half gone. Donations gladly accepted... hint hint!Yesterday for lunch I had a real 'comfort food' - leftover sausage gravy and homemade buttermilk biscuits from the night before. Yesterday around 4:00 all I could think about was the remaining gravy and biscuits in the refrigerator. I was starving and I knew exactly how good they would taste. I was right! I had my 'dinner' at 4:00. That of course meant when I fed my family Herbed Shrimp, Wild Rice Pilaf and garlic potatoes, that I wasn't hungry. Again, I'll call the "mother" card on this one. But you know what happened right? By 8:00 pm I had the munchies and by 9:00 I could not even think about heading to bed without something to eat.You guys know I don't 'do' sweets as a general rule, so didn't get any crazy ideas I grabbed chocolate (gag). Don't Tell CoffeeGirl I'm Thinking About It........
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It's funny that when BabyGirl was in 7th grade I could not imagine any parent in their right mind would buy their 'kids' a cellphone. But then again, as a seasoned parent of three, it's almost embarassing now to look back at how adament I was about certain issues when I was still child-free or when I only had one child... or two. Heck, let's be honest! Parenting is an ever changing world and you and your kids all have to be open to change. When BabyGirl was in 7th grade she was in volleyball at the same time her brother was in football. She was also in dance, as was her little sister. There were many times I was in route picking up or dropping off one child when another game or practice would get over and I needed to pick another up, although I didn't always know this because sometimes the line to the one land-line phone in the school hallway would be 25 children deep and it would take BabyGirl 35 minutes of waiting in line just to get to use the phone to try to call me.

Tiny Teen Update
1970-01-01 00:59:59
For those following the break up of BabyGirl and Boyfriend:BabyGirl truly likes the boy-who-is-a-friend. They laugh constantly when they are together and he's truly fun and easy to talk to. Last weekend they went out to eat and they were both joking about how their 'previous' dates refused to eat. Ex-Boyfriend and Ex-Girlfriend would always order salads and soup. They went to Fridays for dinner."You're not going to order a salad are you?" he asked."No way!" said BabyGirl, "I'm getting a big old bacon burger!" He loved that.Towards the end of the meal he looked at her plate. "You're not done with your burger yet are you?" he asked."Not quite. I have a couple bites left, why?"He quickly picked up the last of his burger and shoved it in his mouth."I WON!" he exclaimed. "I had to finish my burger before you did!"Again they laughed. He asked her out to a movie tonight after she is done cheerleading at the game. In other news; Ex-Boyfriend calls and texts at least 2-3 tim

Such a Quandry!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I'm sooo tired this afternoon.I decided if I had a nice shot of espresso or a hot cup of strong coffee it would get me going but I have to leave ASAP to pick up a gift for my neice.I have no cash.None.NO.Cash.But I DO have two gift cards for coffeehauses. Starbucks and Caribou Coffee.Problem?I do not live near either! We have one coffee shop in town and it's awesome but I'd have to go inside and use my debit card... which comes out of the ever dwindling checking account which I can't really spend frivolously out of. I love my coffee but I'm very frugal (there's that damn word again!).So... coffee? No coffee?Drive out of my way to get Caribou or Starbucks? No time!Ack! What's a SuperMom to do!?*EDITED*Ok - like not 3 hours later the UPS man delivered my OWN espresso machine!!!!!!!

It's Official! I'm Intimidated!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This is my new espresso slash capuccino machine complete with a frother/steamer thingy. It's comparable to the old pressure cookers that your grandmother's used to use and warn all the small children in the area to 'stay outta the kitchen incase the darn thing blows!'I have fresh baked pink M&M cookies to anyone is brave enough to come to my house and show me how to use this contraption.PS:In keeping with my oh-so-frugal-ness, NO I did not buy it. Duh. I earned it from one of my survey companies.*I'm back*I'm here again to tell you... I DID IT!!!!! I'm on my second cup of capuccino and OMG this is heaven. Tastes almost exactly like my 'authentic' capuccino in Rome, Italy last March. Yeah me! Monkeydragon, I may be joining you for espresso and capuccino's in the morning now!

Teen Update Coming
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I should think of a name for BabyGirls teen drama posts. LOL. I mean, I know it's not a lot of drama, really, but it's interesting to watch and of course, I feel part of the pain, anguish, tears, laughter and well, I feel a little piece of all her emotions as a Mom. She is doing so very well though... much better than I could have or would have. More on this later...

STILL. AT. WORK
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I really thought I'd get a heads-up email by now letting me know if they found someone for my position and when they would be starting. They interviewed LAST FRIDAY. AS IN A WEEK AGO. And yes... it's VERY possible they have someone starting even 'tomorrow' and wouldn't tell me. They have really excellent communication like that.

Watch Out... She's Double Caffeinated Now!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
On my THIRD cup of capuccino. Yes, third. Watch out world... she's loaded. I've started to put a shot of sugar-free Hazelnut syrup in them too... cuz, you know, I'm all crazy like that and stuff.Last night BabyGirl had to cheer at a varsity game, Coffeekid went to watch the game, and Coffeegirl called to ask if she could go with friends to the same game. Coffeehusband was at work so this left me???? Alone. What a concept! After attempting to work my new sparkling Melitta Espresso and Cappuccino Maker (which happens to be on sale and pretty cheap now - you can get it for about 30 bucks!) my friend J called to chat. She was on her way to work at the school making lesson plans for next week but the janitor wasn't there and she had 30 minutes to waste until she could get into the school so I told her to come on over, as we haven't been able to eek out a time together to chat for like, 6 or 7 weeks now!? She and her 3 year old daughter came over and you know darn well w

It's a vacation anniversary of sorts!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
OMG I just realized that 2 years ago today Coffeehusband and I were leaving on our couples only weekend to Florida. It was the very first time we had ever gone on a vacation of any sort without the kids and it was so incredibly wonderful and relaxing that we swore we were going to do it once a year from now on.Yeah, ummm, did you read the first line of this post? Two years ago today. Obviously we didn't follow through with that one did we? So I'm checking out Florida vacation rentals and sighing and looking out my window at the snow covered roof tops and lawns.

Today Sucks.

Mr. Ghostie likes to whistle?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It had been so long since we've had any 'strange' occurances, I had more or less believed that perhaps he (?) had moved on somehow. Nope.Tonight Coffeekid and I were (are) the only ones home so we were in the kitchen having dinner. During a lull in conversation we suddenly heard someone whistle. It wasn't a 'tune' it was a few long drawn out one-note-whistles with a few little whistles that sounded like it 'might' start to be a song or tune but then instead did a long one again. I looked at Coffeekid and he looked at me and we silently listened to the ghost whistle. I took note of our surroundings and both cats were in the same room as us, one was sitting in the dining room looking down the hallway to the entryway door where the whistle came from. After taking stock of the cats and humans that were home I walked to the front door to see if perhaps Coffeegirl or BabyGirl had come home and were whistling some strange way on the porch before coming in. (Like they would stand

An Update for all Wondering 'Just What is Going on With Her Job Anyway!?'

Coffee: CappuccinoMug: New York Coffee Cappuccino mugTopic: SAHM soon? This Tuesday will be 4 weeks since I put in my resignation. I haven't minded the work nor the extra weeks waiting for them to hire someone and staying on to train this person, as the extra time has been a blessing not only to use the last of my paychecks to put into a 'vacation' account for a family vacation, (not even remotely possible without my income) but emotionally I've been able to slowly break away from the position that has become such a large part of 'who I am' and who I've been over the past 2 & 1/2 years.I've been making mental lists of the cleaning, the house decoration, the painting and the sewing that I'll need to do once I'm home full time. I still haven't heard anything from the Gray Suits as to how the interviews for my position went nor when 'someone' will be starting. The joke in my office building from everyone is they believe my boss will waltz into the office one mor

Teen Angst
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess and a handsome young man who decided to go out. They dated for 1 1/2 years and the young man got a part time job. There was an evil blonde that worked with the handsome young man and being that he was 'new meat' she set her sights on him and flirted. The young man, being a quite oblivious typical male, loved the attention and thought that the grass would be greener on the other side. He started to be cranky to the beautiful princess and accused her of liking other princes and peasants and his jealousy was mounting. The princess was confused as to what was coming over the young man... but she wasn't going to stand for it and told him he was a fool. Their bickering escalated. Finally one evening the young man proposed they take a 'break'. (Ross and Rachel come to mind here). He proposed a "one month break and then get back together".Indignant, the princess replied "No! I'm not going to sit around and wait for you for a month and t

Help! We're trapped in the bedroom and we can't get out!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Ex-boyfriend wanted to get together to talk with BabyGirl tonight after work. So... he came over and then? Wouldn't get out of the car. It took the promise of "My Mom is leaving" "My Mom doesn't hate you" and "there is food in the oven and I have to keep an eye on it" before he would enter the house.I was actually just leaving for a quick errand so in passing in the hallway I said hello and he mumbled hello but wouldn't even meet my eyes. I just laughed. I told him I didn't hate him and that he was always welcome in our home so relax and smile! When I returned from the errand I walked in to... silence."Well you guys look pretty busy ... NOT TALKING"BabyGirl nodded and sighed. "Yep, that's pretty much it."This boy has never ever been one to communicate. Lucky for me I married one just like him so we are used to it. LOL.I told him that he obviously had something on his mind he wanted to talk about or he wouldn't be here tonight. That guys in general are awful at communic

Sleep? What's That?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I didn't get to sleep until after 11:00 pm tonight and was up at 3:18 am. My thoughts turned to Babygirl and her possibly going out with ex-boyfriend again and I realized "I don't want her to." She has been so incredibly free spirited and happy this last 2 weeks. I managed to fall back to sleep only to dream about it.In my dream we were sitting at the island counter in the kitchen and I asked her if she was 'going with' Ex-boyfriend again and she said yes and I started to cry because I was so sad... I really wanted her to go on dates with a few other guys and not be tied down to one again for awhile. I woke up then. I saw it was only 3:36 and I had barely slept. I grabbed my laptop off the floor and went to a site I like because it's pages and pages of reading stories... as I was getting tired enough to sleep I heard scratching and banging from the bedroom next to us.Dang cat! Shut up.About once every 10 minutes it would scratch and bang against the door but dang it, I'm t

Still Here... Still Working... and still rambling
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Happy Monday! Here I am... at work, which is all good. Very very slow right now which is a blessing on so many levels. After all I am on week number four (4) after submitting my 2 week notice.Ever hopeful I keep expecting (daily) to receive an email or phone call from the powers-that-be telling me how the interviews 1 1/2 weeks ago went and what day someone is starting. I know nothing. Nothing! Yet, I'm more than happy to earn every last penny I can as the day I quit is the day we start to live on a very meager salary from Coffeehusband which, on the excel spreadsheet I produced, shows there is absolutely no way I can quit working outside the home and still afford to exist.(Silly little tidbit of information here; I'm on hold with Sams Club checking on the availability of a product. My office phone automatically times every call and so far the clock is ticking at 13 minutes and 15 seconds that I've been on hold. Just for comparison; I called Costco first and the entire con

Egreetings and eCards might save the day....

Did you forget Valentines Day is this week? ( Valentine's Day eCard by "The Chins" ) Too late to buy a card? I happen to have both a spouse birthday and Valentines Day this week, don't you wish you were me?If you love to send eCards or you just find yourself forced to due to uh, lack of organizational skills might we say, or uh, even better - lack of funds? You can check out this site; eCards. They are offering customers a free 30 day trial membership and if you love the funny or risque, animated cards they have you can buy a full year membership for about $13.99. They have cards for everything, Valentines, Birthdays, other holidays or just 'because'. This one would have been perfect for my Great Aunt Lollie, 'Badass' (well, if she hadn't of died 2 years ago anyway.)For less than fourteen bucks, I guess this would be about the same amount you would spend on 3 cards that you would buy, sign, stuff, seal and stamp to send out by postal mail. So really, if you se

Ode To the Bowl Cut
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Good Morning blog-world.This morning has the potential to be a nice cold, beautiful snowy morning except it was (is) marred by the sound of a kazillion snow throwers humming and growling throughout the neighborhood. We have a few inches of snow on the ground and school is just 2 hours late but it will give the kids a little more time to sleep and me, a little more time to sit and think, sip coffee and blog. The little boy with the bowl cut in the photo above (circa 1974 maybe?) is having a birthday today. He is turning 38. Well, I hope he is turning 38 because those are the birthday candle numbers I bought for the top of his cake.Until he was about 10 years old his parents insisted on giving him this incredibly ugly bowl cut with chopped bangs. The poor kid. He truly was scarred for life. This might explain the long hair from the age of 16-22. Lucky for him it was the late 80's and he was born at the right time to partake in the glory days of Poison, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi hair

It's just the coffee talking.....
1970-01-01 00:59:59
CR shelters change policy on homelessCEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa Homeless shelters in Cedar Rapids have developed a policy to make sure people won't be left out in the elements. The change comes after a man died of exposure after he was turned away from a shelter in December because he was drunk. Local shelters don't accept people who've been drinking.Under the new policy, shelter staff or police dealing with an intoxicated person will call an outreach team, which will assess the person's condition.Depending on the finding, the person could be taken to a hospital for treatment. If they're a threat to themselves or others, they could be taken to jail. Another open is a motel room paid for by the Salvation Army.So... let's see here.Hospital = I'm paying for it.Jail = I'm paying for it.Hotel Room and Salvation Army = my donations pay for it.I do not want to pay for drunk homeless people to sleep off their stupor. Once again... I get to pay for other peoples bad decisions.

Anyone for cake and conversation?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I just put photos and directions for Coffeehusbands birthday cake up on my recipe blog (click here) but I thought perhaps I would come share some on the Coffee blog as well since we have plenty left over. It's an ice cream cake so don't freeze your front teeth, k?Today at work I had a fun project to do preparing a big event and since I love the creative side of it I was designing and printing the invitations as well. No sense paying somone else to do a job I love and am good at, so I design and print most all our organizations 'event' invitations and programs. I'm really happy with how they turned out and I'll have to remember to grab a copy of one tomorrow to save in my portfolio. It also felt good just to be so busy with a project again as last week and this week have been so quiet. Tonight someone I know called to see if our daughter could babysit on a certain date and after that topic she asked if I had found another position yet? She said yesterday someone at her

Coffee: Gevalia Signature BlendMug: White ceramic with embossed swirlsToday a lot of bloggers are going to be talking about valentines and love and mushy stuff. I'm thinking about all the money Hallmark is making and all the dead tree's to make those stupid cards. Yes, I bought one of those stupid cards and wrote my husbands name on it... but dangit, next year I won't. Because? Because I hate following the crowd, being like everyone else and doing things because I 'should' or it's it's what 'everyone' does. For that reason I didn't get him anything... just a handful of leftover candy from the kids class valentines and this card. (But the candy is actually a chocolate covered cherry and two peanut butter bon bons with a wafer base... because, you know, we are just like that. )Coffeekid had to get something for his new girlfriend, but didn't want to go buy it so one of his sisters and I picked it out. That's a guy for ya! He wouldn't even hold it this morning...

Life In A Small Town

Today someone came into the office to chat. Since I'm leaving I'm used to people stopping in to ask about it... but then she said; "I heard Babygirl and Boyfriend broke up!"I look at her with my mouth open."How in the world did YOU hear this?""Oh, you know... small town!"She grinned. This is someone who doesn't have any connection whatsoever to my kids. Has no kids the same age, same group or even the same sports. Just one of the several hundred busybodies around town. But then her topic got on dating, and the age to allow to date and then onto MySpace. I found out that she regularly surfs all the kids MySpace pages that she can find that live in our town. She was shocked and appalled at what they 'have' on them and don't their parents check their MySpace? Don't they care?! And was really freaking out over it. She made sure to note that one particular thing she was freaking out over "wasn't on YOUR daughters page... but still! So many of the kids had it on theirs!" She

Sex or a Tornado?

Tonight at the dinner table (after the kids had all left the table) it was just Coffeehusband and I;"So what time did you come to bed last night?""12:30. I was flipping through channels and stopped on the weather channel.""You didn't come to bed with your wife on Valentines Day because you had to watch the weather channel?""But... there was a tornado on it! It was a special on tornadoes!""Right. So you would rather watch the weather channel than go to bed with your wife. I am sooooooo blogging about this!" "Oh man...."ROTFL!!!!!!!!PS: The man DOES love him a tornado. As a matter of fact when he is done helping Coffeegirl study her spelling words (in about 10 minutes) we are going to go watch Twister together.

A little of everything, a lot of nothing......
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Even as a teenager I wasn't one for partying on the weekends, and here I am, a 36 year old wife and Mom .... still not partying on the weekends. LOL. Today I did not have to work, as apparently when the Gray Suit came in unexpectedly this week (the first time) and caught me putting away paper and straightening the office he decided I was doing 'busy work' and needn't be there one day a week. I chose Fridays.Instead this morning I argued with Coffeehusband when he was getting in the way and messing up everything and breaking things 'helping' around the house before work. Finally he said he would go clean the basement. Good. Idea. Finally he went off to work and I was blessed with 2 hours of 'freedom' to do laundry, scrub the kitchen floor, vacuum every carpet we own, clean and scrub 2 1/2 bathrooms and organize and pack away 147 Barbies, 1 house, 1 shopping mall and 100,008,736 pieces of barbie clothing and shoes.A little after 1:00 our friends from Minneapolis showed

Folgers Coffee in a Starbucks Mug
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Somehow I think this mornings title may sum it all up for me.Folger's coffee in a Starbucks mug Think about it.In a meeting next to the guy with the (literally) $1000 suit I'm the one in the $29.99 suit I found on clearance at the end of the season at Sears in the mall. Shhhhh. Our previous neighborhood average income was about $150,000 we were a family of five living on $55K. They didn't know.Yes, we do take a trip to the beach every year. We drive there and save $2500 on airfare so the trip is affordable. We also go in April before the rate for 'our' room triples in June and July. You think it's cool I cook at home instead of going out. The average cost of a meal out for our family is $70 at a typical bar & grill style restaurant. Do you realize I could buy groceries for a month with the same amount we would spend on 6 nights of eating out? And I can make the same exact foods as the restaurant serves! My kids have abercrombie and Hollister on their butts and chests. You m
