John McCarthy cruises into the inside section of Aileens, Western Ireland . A huge flat slab known as the ‘tennis court’ lurks just below the surface. If the swell hits it right you get a gaping, makeable tube; if it hits wrong, which it does a lot on particular swell directions, you don’t come out. Photo: Al Mackinnon

Dick Dale - King of the Surf Music
2007-03-14 12:39:13
Dick Dale invented surf guitar: staccato bursts of loud, clean twang over explosive rhythms. After wowing the bronzed kids at dances in Southern California and issuing wild seven-inch rides like “Let’s Go Trippin”, Dale put out the 1962 milestone, Surfers Choice, a mix of studio and live tapes. This reissue has extra “61-63″ singles like the frantic “Miserlou”, wich you all know from the opening credits of Pulp Fiction. Dick Dale invented surf music in the 1950’s. Not the ’60’s as is commonly believed. He was given the title “King of the Surf Guitar” by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his newly creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and

Surf Lines
2007-03-26 11:09:39

Teahupoo East, Philippines – Robin Johnson deciding not to chance this one. You can afford to be choosy with just two people in the lineup, and need to be when there’s only about a foot of water underneath. Stay safe, stay at home, surf the net. Photo: Tor Johnson

Menakoz - Pais Basco - Spain
2007-04-23 12:02:19
Menakoz, bathed in atypical light and looking unusually alluring. Don’t be fooled. This place has teeth. Meñakoz holds the biggest waves in Europe holding swells up to 20ft. This is due to its Sunset like setup. With a deep trench out at sea jacking up to shallow rock and sand bottom. From the parking spot on the side of the cliff it looks friendly but this surf spot is extremely dangerous. Photo: Willy Uribe

Morning Surf at Hossegor - France
2007-05-07 11:21:30
Wake up and smell the froth! Hossegor morning rush hour with traffic moving smoothly in both directions. This long strech of gold sand has gained a reputation as the best beachbreak surf spot of Europe and one of the best one in the world, everything for good reason: tubes. Heavy, substantial shorebreak barrels that’ll leave you picking sand out of various orifices for weeks after a solid session. There’s a huge trench offshore, so the swell gets focused on the few miles of sand that make up Hossegor. Photo: Al Mackinnon

Damien Hobgood Teahupoo Wipeout
2007-05-09 21:22:13
Damien Hobgood took a turn for the worse on this one. This happened during the Billabong Pro Tahiti 2007, in the well known Teahupoo waves. Photo: ASP / Covered Images / Karen There can be only one world’s heaviest wave, and that title rests soundly with the wave at Teahupoo.

Angourie - Australia NSW surf
2007-05-14 17:01:06
Angourie is a bowling right-hand point that rightly occupies a special place in the hearts of Australia n surfing. It is a rite of passage for Sydney surfers to make the eight-hour drive when the place is on. The wave itself refracts around and a headland and creates a perfect, rolling bowl. Ride it and you’ll marvel at how, like a slingshot, you keep generating power. Dave “Baddy” Treloar, a stand-out in Angourie’s lineup since Morning of the Earth days, knows the inner magic of this new surfing reserve better than anyone. Photo: Albe Falzon

Waimea Shorebreak Bodyboard Wipeout
2007-06-05 08:56:19
This is Waimea shore break, where 20-foot waves that break on the more famous point wrap into the bay to explode on shallow sandbars as hellish 12-foot tubes. Only a few extreme bodyboarders challenge it, kicking their sponge-soft boards over the ledge for a thrilling plunge into thin air and a brief tube ride. And a brutal beating. This unknown rider challenges the beast. The infamous Waimea Shorebreak takes one more… Photo: Tim Mckenna
