Chairman of the Board - Surf Soundtrack 2007-07-12 09:08:11 Never mind the Beach Boys, Dick Dale or the sand stomping legends of the surf guitar. Chairman
Of The Board
is a compilation of rare surf soundtracks all but lost to the genre that created it.
Boasting tracks from some of the most iconic surf films from the 1960’s and 70’s, Surf Soundtrack
s includes many of the ‘golden era’ surfing moments from Crystal Voyager, The Endless Summer, Innermost Limits Of Pure Fun, Morning Of The Earth, Evolution & Super Session. Surfing is full of ‘golden eras’ and the one between 1964 - 1974 was a time when film directors immersed in the surfing culture, commissioned original music for their cinematic creations.
From 60s beats to funky stoner rock, a psychedelic pulse breathed energy into a giant screen sized tube ride and surfers had a soundtrack that beautifully reflected the barefoot roots of their lifestyle.
Over 30 years has passed since this golden era. Unfortunately many of these surf soundtracks have fallen between the gaps

Culver City Dub Collective Debut Album 2007-08-28 05:50:57 Dos, the debut full-length album from the Culver City Dub Collective
, unites an all-star cast in a captivating blend of Jamaican roots reggae, Afro-Cuban rhythms and West Coast bossa beats. It’s an intoxicating breeze that rattles the brain in all the right places, a simmering soundtrack to a thousand road trips and hazy summer afternoons.
The album features stunning appearances from such luminaries as Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Money Mark, Studio One vocalist Winston Jarret, and Bedouin Soundclash singer Jay Malinowski. Despite the group’s amorphous nature, the Culver City Dub Collective (CCDC) is ultimately assembled, produced and creatively grounded by two individuals: drummer/songwriter Adam Topol and guitarist/engineer Franchot Tone.
Together, the two boundwed over albums by bossa kings like Tom Jobim and João Gilberto, Bristol minimalists Massive Attack, dub prophets King Tubby and Sir Coxsone Dodd, and indie-funk home taper Luther Russell. With a vision in place and a stu Read more: Album

Blue Stingrays - Surf Music from the 90’s 2007-09-07 15:44:05 The Blue Stingrays were a 90’s band that played surf rock, with some country and western mixed elements, all with a very cool Hawaiian atmosphere. The band was composed of the members of The Heartbreakers, Tom Petty’s backup band, who took a short break from their work with Petty to record one album, Surf-N-Burn.
It’s heartbreaking to realize how few people have heard of the Blue Stingrays, much less know the names of the group members. The CD’s cover photo, the liner notes, even including Side 1 and Side 2 for the song titles, all remind me of those great surf instrumental albums of the early sixties. You can almost hear the sound of the needle dropping onto the vinyl as the party sounds fade in, followed by the opening notes of “Monsoon.”
The appropriately named “Echo Park” is drenched in reverb, and sounds as fresh today as when it was first recorded. Covering “Goldfinger” was no doubt a tip of the hat to the Ventures, w Read more: Music

Durban South Africa Surf 2007-09-24 06:18:54 Durban, or Surf City, as it is often called, is the centre of the surf industry in South
Africa
. Pioneered by old surfing legends such as Tony Heard, Leith and Derek Jardine, Shorty Bronkhorst, Ant Van Der Heuwel and Baron Stander, Durban was the place to be in the late 40s and early 50s, when the rest of South Africa was fast asleep, when it came to surfing anyway.
Durban probably has the highest proportion of surfers in the country, and therefore the highest number of shapers, surf shops, clothing and equipment factories. The main surfing beaches of the city are also insanely crowded when there are waves. Durban is the third biggest city in the country, and is in the middle of a lush sub-tropical zone.
It as a vibrant nightlife and there is plenty to see and do during the day, when you are not surfing.

Ben Harper Lifeline Album Review 2007-10-02 11:32:55 Ben Harper
is one of the few surviving “traditionalists” in todays musical landscape. Even though Harper is a child of the eighties and nineties his music has always been a throwback to the decades before that.
Harper has throughout his career shown a high esteem for the Blues and Soul men of the past. The homages to the likes of Robert Johnson and Otis Redding were often well visible on the surface. Not only on his own records but also in the collaborations he has chosen.
At the end of a nine month European tour, Ben Harper
& the Innocent Criminals went to a studio in Paris and completed their new album, Lifeline
, in just seven days. The result: a soulful masterpiece with beautifully direct lyrics and undeniable grooves. No computers used. Just straight up good music.
It’s no surprise that most bands today don’t record albums live, straight to tape, in one room, no Pro Tools, no auto-tune. There are only a handful of modern artists that can pull it of Read more: Album

Morocco Surfing Spots 2007-10-12 06:19:38 Some surfers talk all the time about the giant waves of Hawaii, while others dream about the tubes of Tahiti or perfect waves of Fiji. But for most of them these destinations remain inaccessible. They are simply exotic places in a surfing magazine. In Morocco
, you find not only superb waves that you can surf all year long but also a magnificent back country that you can explore after your watery exploits and a local population famous for the warm welcome it accords its visitors.

Morocco with its 3500 kilometers of coastline offers the surfer a dazzling array of opportunities. On its Atlantic side, rocky bottoms alternate with sand ones, reef breaks with beach breaks for those already initiated in the art of surfing. Although Americans and Australians were the surfers who brought he sport to Morocco in the 1970’s now it is the European Surfer along with his Moroccan counterpart who is indulging his passion for the wave. In the last few years, the popularity Read more: Surfing
Slackstone - Into the Blue Sparkle. Quality Surf Music 2007-10-08 05:50:38 If you’re a fan of surf music in the same vein as the Aqua Velvets, Dick Dale, Los Strait Jackets, and the Ventures, you’ll absolutely LOVE this Slackstone - Into the Blue Sparkle
Album. With twangy, reverb-drenched Fenders accompanied by smart basslines, and drumming that …, this is one superb surf band.
At various times throughout rock history, waves of surf bands have crashed onto the shores, and Slacktone is widely considered by instrumental aficionados to be among the very best of the third wave, the era from 1994 to the present. Its members — guitarist Dave Wronski, bassist Sam Bolle and drummer Dusty Watson — are virtuosos on their instruments. All have decades of surf under their feet — either traditionally, via Dick Dale’s backing band, or through the surf-punk route in outfits such as Agent Orange.
These guys are middleaged surf veterans who really know their stuff. Together, united under the reverb, they have contributed sacred melodies suc Read more: Quality
