Remembering George Harrison
2006-12-01 17:53:00
Hard to believe, but it was five years ago today (November 29th, 2001) that George Harrison lost his long battle with cancer and died at the age of 58. His legacy was secured as soon as the Beatles started making records in the early 1960s, but Harrison wasn't content to just be a sideman to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. His contributions to the Beatles included the songs "Taxman," "Something," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and his solo career kicked off with the Number One hit "My Sweet Lord" and Number One album All Things Must Pass. He was also responsible for The Concert For Bangla Desh, which was the first major rock and roll fundraiser, paving the way for countless other music-supported benefits over the years. He later went on to become a member of the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne, finally securing himself legendary status. He is sorely missed -- today, and every day.Maybe the best

The Beatles hit No. 1 on charts
2006-12-01 17:52:00
It seems Beatlemania is still alive and well in Canada, as the Fab Four's latest compilation "LOVE" hit the top spot in the land this week. "LOVE," which remixes and remasters 26 of the group's songs, debuted at No. 1 on sales of 34,000 copies, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. It marks the second first-place debut for the Liverpool legends in the SoundScan era. The compilation "Beatles 1" checked in at No. 1 back in November of 2000 with sales of 54,000. The group's achievement is even more impressive when you consider that the week's album chart includes six other debuts in the Canadian top 10 -- including four new entries landing in the first four chart positions. Aside from The Beatles' debut at No. 1, Il Divo's third album "Siempre" premiered at No. 2 on sales of 32,000. U2's latest hits package "U218 Singles" (19,000) finished its first week of release at No. 3, followed by Rock Star Supernova's self-titled debut at No. 4. The movement up top forced Josh

Eagles Of Death Metal in feud with Axl Rose
2006-12-01 17:45:00
Eagles Of Death Metal singer Jesse Hughes has told Axl Rose he can "go f--k himself" after his band was thrown off the current Guns N' Roses tour. Hughes has reacted furiously to the decision by Axl to sack EODM after just one date of their 15-show support stint in America. Rose apparently took the decision after sections of the crowd booed Hughes and company at their concert in Cleveland last Friday. Axl later renamed the group "The Pigeons Of Sh-t Metal" from the stage, before then ejecting them from the tour, a decision which has infuriated Hughes. "Axl Rose is f--king out of his mind. He wasn't even there when we played. He got there about 30 minutes after we got done playing. He waltzed on to the stage and went nuts," he told the British music paper NME. Explaining the poor reception EODM received from certain members of the audience, Hughes continued: "When we first walked out there the crowd were jeering, but it was because we weren't Axl Rose. These kids had been waiting the

Courtney Love: Kurt Cobain Wasn't the One
2006-11-26 17:11:00
Courtney Love says Kurt Cobain wasn't the love of her life. The 'Hole' singer described the late Nirvana frontman - the father of her 12-year-old daughter Frances Bean, who she was married to for two years - as "the best friend I ever had" but admits he could be mistrusting and hostile. She told POP magazine: "I think he did love me. But when you're dealing with someone who is that brilliant but is tortured you have to put up with a lot of misanthropic s**t." Love - who has previously drug and drink addictions - claims her one true love was actor Ed Norton. She explained: "He's been more of a daddy to Frances than Kurt ever was." The 42-year-old rocker appears in a series of raunchy semi-nude photographs in the latest edition of the magazine. However, Katie Grand, the editor-in-chief of POP, insists that is not what was initially intended. She said: "We didn't plan the shoot to be raunchy - we wanted to put her in couture - but she's such a big presence. In a couture dress sh

2006-11-26 17:06:00
John Lennon 's widow is calling for the anniversary of his death to become a day of worldwide healing. In the open letter, Ono urges readers to take responsibility for failing to intervene on behalf of victims around the world. "Know that the physical and mental abuse you have endured will have a lingering effect on our society," she writes in a portion of the letter directed to victims. "Know that the burden is ours." Possible Blur reunion in the works?
2006-11-25 18:27:00
Former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon has admitted he would consider playing with Blur again. As the ongoing saga of his departure from the Britpop stars continues, three years after he left the band, Coxon appears to be open to a possible reconciliation. Speaking in a new interview, he was responding to recent comments made by bass player Alex James, who suggested the group wanted to make one more album with Coxon. Coxon admitted to having little contact with ex-bandmates Damon Albarn and Dave Rowntree, although he does remain close to James. "Alex will always be my friend. I guess they all will be in some way, but it's somewhat strange," he said. Meanwhile, Coxon told Pitchfork he would certainly not rule out the idea if he was asked. "I haven't been approached about it. I think about it: Would it be fun? Would it be a bit too scary? What would the dynamic be in a studio? Would I have to do promotion? Would I tour? You know, it's a lot of thinking. "So I guess I still mull around

Neither Jagger nor clothes miss a beat
2006-11-25 18:24:00
Like his voice, Mick Jagger 's wardrobe is still rocking after all these years. His sexagenarian frame has not missed a beat when it comes to fashion. Whether it's tight shirts or jeans, Jagger never fails to impress audiences with his style. "It doesn't matter if you're starting out or you're doing it for years," Jagger told The New York Times. "There's no point in having a huge dress-up if you're playing a 500-seat club. And if you're playing for 50,000 people, there's no point in wearing rags." Over the decades, Jagger has donned jeans and jackets by the Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere and T-shirts by the Dior designer Hedi Slimane. But that was not always the case, said Jagger, 63. Like many bands just starting out, clothes were a luxury he and his mates couldn't afford. "We wore clothes very similar to what we wore offstage because we didn't have any money and that was the look," Jagger said. Rolling Stones Lyrics

Linkin Park fan hacks phone data
2006-11-25 18:22:00
A woman is accused of using a computer at a national laboratory to hack into a cell phone company's Web site to get a number for Chester Bennington, lead singer of the Grammy-winning rock group Linkin Park. According to an affidavit filed by the Department of Defense Inspector General, Devon Townsend, 27, obtained copies of Bennington's cell phone bill, the phone numbers he called and digital pictures taken with the phone. Investigators said she also hacked into the e-mail of Bennington's wife, Talinda Bennington, and at one point called her and threatened her. Talinda Bennington told federal authorities last month that someone had accessed their Verizon Wireless account online, according to the affidavit, and expressed concern that a "stalker" had access to personal information. Townsend waived her right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court and was released to her mother's custody. She is accused of using a computer at her former workplace, Sandia National Labor

Black Eyed Peas nab three awards at AMAs
2006-11-23 17:06:00
They ruled the American Music Awards with three wins, but don't look for the Black Eyed Peas to score another trifecta when Grammy nominations are announced next month. The band's most recent record, 2005's "Monkey Business," was named favorite rap/hip-hop album Tuesday, but it isn't eligible for consideration for the Grammy awards in February.Still, the hybrid hip-hop quartet, which blends rap and vocals with jazzy backdrops and groovy bass lines, is clearly one of America's favorites, winning best group in both the rap/hip hop and soul/rhythm & blues categories.Meanwhile, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige and Rascal Flatts may have become instant Grammy front-runners with double wins at the American Music Awards on Tuesday. Each has a new album that qualifies for consideration. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were favorite alternative artist and pop/rock band. They accepted their award via satellite from London, with bass player Flea beat-boxing as lead singer Ant

Ono does not forgive Lennon's killer
2006-12-10 18:01:00
Yoko Ono has appealed to people across the world to mark the anniversary of John Lennon 's assassination today by healing the world. The widow of the former Beatle has issued a lengthy statement calling for peace and forgive ness for all, 26 years after Lennon was shot dead in New York. Ono, who admits she still cannot forgive Mark David Chapman for killing her husband, tells victims of violence across the world that "your loss is our loss." The statement includes the following excerpts: "Every year on this day I hear from many from all over the world who remember my husband, John Lennon, and his message of peace. They tell me they are thinking of John on this day and how he was shot and killed at the prime of life, at age 40, when he had so much life ahead of him. Thank you for your undying love for John and also for your concern for me on this tragic anniversary. "This year, though, on December 8th, while we remember John, I would also like us to focus on sending the following message

Liam Gallagher Says He Saw John Lennon's Ghost
2006-12-10 17:57:00
London, England (BANG) - It seems like there's a celebrity ghost lurking around in London and he definitely wants his presence to be known. Liam Gallagher claims he was once visited by the ghost of his idol John Lennon . The Oasis singer insists the late Beatle appeared to him as an apparition while he was staying at a friend's house years ago in his hometown of Manchester. Rather than be spooked by the specter, Liam was in awe of his hero. He said, "I was in Manchester at a mate's house having a sleep. I remember getting up and feeling really weird. I turned round and there I was, lying on the bed, and I sort of fell back into my body. There was a presence there and it was him, Lennon." Liam is not the only person convinced the ghost of Lennon has contacted them. The music legend's former band mate Paul McCartney is convinced he haunted the recording of the 1995 Beatles single "Free As A Bird" - in the form of a white peacock. McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison w

Axl says new Guns N' Roses album will be out in March
2006-12-15 17:57:00
The new Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy will be released in March 2007, according to Axl Rose. Rose claims he will finally unveil the chronically long-awaited LP in the spring, around 10years after it was first mooted. In an online posting, the Guns singer admitted there had been a series of "obstacles" delaying the LP, but seems certain that it will now finally emerge. Speaking yesterday, he said: "To say the making of this album has been an unbearably long and incomprehensible journey would be an understatement." However, Rose continued: "It takes approximately eight weeks for an album to hit the shelves once it has been turned in to the record company. "That being said this is not a promise, a lie or a guarantee, but we do wish to announce a tentative release date of March 6. This is the first time we have done this publicly for this album. "Any and all other dates have been made up by others for their own reasons. We would like to assure the fans that though tentative, ev

Courtney Love's Cases Closed
2006-12-13 17:54:00
Courtney Love has emerged from her legal hole. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge dismissed one misdemeanor assault case and two drug-possession cases against the rocker Monday after finding that she had successfully completed drug rehabilitation. Love, dressed in a black suit and accompanied by her manager, Peter Asher, and her lawyer, Howard Weitzman, wept with joy upon hearing the judge's decision. "Thank you for not taking me into custody," Love told Judge Rand Rubin. "Thank you for giving me an opportunity. You've been a good, fair judge. Sorry for crying." Rubin's ruling ended Love's probation a month early in the drug cases and more than a year early in the assault case. "Early on in this case, Ms. Love, I think you came very close to coming into custody," Rubin said. "I think you've done very well. You've shown to me you are interested in a much less destructive lifestyle." Love had previously pleaded no contest in February 2005 to a charge of attacking musician Kristi

Mariah Carey sues porn star
2006-12-12 17:51:00
Mariah Carey is threatening to sue a porn star called Mary Carey, if she pursues plans to trademark her name. The pop icon is understood to be concerned her fans will mix the two up and is seeking legal advice over how she can block her erotic rival. Originally born Mary Cook and the star of films such as Double Air Bags 11 and Boobsville Sorority Girls, Mary Carey has dismissed the action. She received a letter from Mariah's legal team in October objecting to her plan to trademark the name, which would also span audio and visual recordings, reports Undercover. At the time, Mariah's lawyer Robert Becker insisted: "Confusion between your client and her Mary Carey trademark and our client and its Mariah Carey trademark is therefore likely." But Mary Carey says she will fight the legal challenge, commenting: "I'm ready to battle Mariah over this because I've been Mary Carey for a long time." Her lawyer, David Beichtman, backed his client, commenting: "My first thought was, does Mar

Pink criticizes Beyonce's choice to wear fur
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Pink has blasted Beyonce for her continuing decision to wear real fur. The pop star has gone head-to-head with the former Destiny's Child icon, who regularly courts controversy with animal rights campaigners over her choice of clothes. Speaking as she continues her current U.K. tour, Pink demanded Beyonce take some responsibility for what she wears. She said: "Some of the practices are so cruel and as a celebrity you have a responsibility to think about the message you're sending out by wearing fur. People will think it's OK or cool, but it's not. I only hope she gets bit on the ass by whatever animal she wears." Pink Lyrics

U2 wins lawsuit over band memorabilia
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Irish rock band U2 emerged victorious Wednesday in a court battle with a former stylist it claimed had taken important memorabilia without permission nearly two decades ago.Lola Cashman had told Dublin's High Court that U2 frontman Bono had given her several items as gifts during U2's Joshua Tree tour in 1987.An iconic Stetson hat, a pair of metal earrings, a green sweat shirt and a pair of black trousers — all worn by Bono — were among the disputed items Cashman claimed she had been given. But after a protracted legal dispute that saw Bono take the witness box, judge Michael Peart ruled that on the balance of probability, the items had not been given to Cashman as she had claimed. The band's lawyer, Paul Sreenan, said U2 would not pursue costs against Cashman for the appeal or for an earlier circuit court action she lost last year.Neither U2 nor Cashman were in court for the ruling.A lower Irish District Court ruling last year rejected Cashman's defense and ordered her to return

Oasis's Noel Gallagher Plays Private Solo Gig In L.A.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Oasis are releasing a greatest-hits album, Stop The Clocks, later this month, and to celebrate, the band's Noel Gallagher and Gem played a special Los Angeles concert on Thursday, November 9, for listeners of local radio station Indie 103.1 FM. Presumably, Noel's brother/bandmate/occasional nemesis Liam Gallagher couldn't be bothered to make the journey, but given that Noel has always been main songwriter for Oasis (and, some would say, the more vocally talented Gallagher brother), the delighted contest winners in the audience didn't seem to miss Liam at all. After a screening of the Oasis tour documentary Lord Don't Stand Me Down, Noel, Gem, and a percussionist introduced only as "Gary" wordlessly made their way onto the stage of L.A.'s Wadsworth Theater, where they played a stripped-down concert starting with "(It's Good) To Be Free," "Talk Tonight," "Fade Away," and "Cast No Shadow." Noel then dryly quipped, "Let's play another song that's not coming out on our album," dr

John Lennon had a secret affair while married to his first wife Cynthia, according to new revelations made today. The Beatles star apparently had a fling with '60s pop singer Alma Cogan, who died 40 years ago of cancer at the age of just 34. According to her sister, the couple were known to have been in a relationship but it was never uncovered to the public. Lennon is alleged to have been unfaithful to Cynthia many times during their relationship. Revealing news of this latest "affair," Corgon's sister Sandra Cohen said: "I knew about Alma and John, of course, but it was something no one admitted because John was married. We had a very strict Jewish upbringing and my mother would never have approved of a relationship between Alma and a married man," she told British paper The Daily Mail. Pink Not Sheepish on Wool Issue
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Pink is not one to let the wool to be pulled over her eyes—or over her body, for that matter. The pop star has teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to urge a boycott of the Australian wool industry in an effort to halt the controversial practice of "mulesing," in which farmers cut skin from around the rear ends of sheep to prevent fly infestations.Pink, whose real name is Alecia Moore, serves as the narrator of a graphic PETA video about the practice, which shows workers using shears to snip skin folds from the backsides of struggling sheep. The practice is meant to create scar tissue that prevents a painful and often deadly condition called fly strike, but animal advocates argue that there are more humane methods of fighting the condition."The wool trade uses methods so sadistic that it makes you consider clearing your closet of any animal products," Pink states in the video."I am calling on consumers to check labels on sweaters before buying them, and if they'r

James Brown , the dynamic, pompadoured "Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.Copsidas said the cause of death was uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," he said.Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him, and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid-footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others. Songs such as David Bowie's "Fame," Prince's "Kiss," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song" were clearly based on Brown's rhythms and voca
