The award season is almost over. There are only a few left such as the Independent Spirit Awards, the Razzies and of course, the Oscar s.The Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA had all picked its winners. There are a few consistencies and of course some inconsistencies. The actors that keep popping up on the winner’s circle are Daniel Day Lewis, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Ruby Dee.The Critics Association have also been dishing out awards. Again, Daniel Day Lewis and Julie Christie’s names are often honored for the Best Actor and Best Actress. However, there are several others who’ve been honored as well.Marion Cotillard was picked by both the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Los Angeles Film Critic

SAG Winners
2008-01-27 23:59:00
The Screen Actors Guild has announced its winners yesterday. There are some similarities with the Golden Globe winners but as always, the Globes have separate categories for Drama and Comedy, so some Globe winnners would end up losing at the SAG Awards. In this case, both the winners for the Comedy/Musical category lost out. Johnny Depp, who won for Sweeney Todd and Marion Cotillard, who won for La Vie En Rose, lost out to Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood) and Julie Christie (Away From Her) respectively.Javier Bardem continued his winning streak by bagging the Supporting Actor kudos for his role in 'No Country for Old Men'. Cate Blanchett, a double nominee for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I'm Not There, did not repeat her Globe win for I'm Not There. Ruby Dee, who was missing from the

Actor Brad Renfro, who became a child star at 14 in The Client but in recent years was plagued by numerous drug problems and arrests, was found dead at his Los Angeles home Tuesday morning; he was 25. While the Los Angeles County coroner confirmed to Access Hollywood that Renfro had died, a cause of death was not named. The Tennessee-born actor snagged an amazingly high-profile part for his first role, that of a young boy sought by the mafia in the 1994 adaptation of the John Grisham novel The Client, opposite established stars Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones. His impressive performance in the box office hit made him a high-profile young actor, and roles in such films as Tom and Huck, Sleepers and Telling Lies in America followed; he also appeared opposite Ian McKellen in Bryan Singer's c

Globes News
2008-01-10 21:09:00
The televised Golden Globe Awards ceremony will be replaced by a press conference this Sunday as a result of the ongoing writers' strike. Organizers announced their decision on Monday to avoid a celebrity-less event after the Screen Actors Guild pledged its members would not cross the Writers Guild Of America's picket line. The 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards had been due to take place at the Beverly Hilton hotel in California. Instead, a news conference will take place to announce the winners of each category. Spokesman Jorge Camara says, "We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures

Emmy Winners
2007-10-04 08:14:00
The Emmys were being generous this year. They spread the wealth. I think most award shows have been spreading the wealth lately. Not one show/movie has emerged as the colossal winner. With the exception of the miniseries Broken Trail, that won Outstanding Mini Series and yielded wins for Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church. The Sopranos behemoth buzz from their series finale got rewarded with an Outstanding Drama Emmy but failed to garner awards for its entire nominated cast. Outstanding ComedyEntourage (1st nomination)The Office (2 nominations, 1 win)30 Rock (1st nomination)Two and a Half Men (2 nominations)Ugly Betty (1st nomination)I’ve seen three of the five noms so I can’t really say which one is the best. I love 30 Rock. It’s now showing on Starworld. I hope 30 Rock wins! I am

Review - High School Musical 2
2007-08-31 15:55:00
What can I say about High School Musical that has not been said already? It’s a Disney Channel original movie and starred either unknown actors or Disney Channel actors. It launched the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tishdale and Corbin Bleu. It also featured some nice songs.I admit it. I like musicals. Chicago. Moulin Rouge. The Sound of Music. Buffy the Musical. JI also like watching Disney stuff AKA teen drama. So I guess I was the perfect candidate for High School Musical. And I loved it.But as with any other movies, some people loved it and some people hated it. However, HSM has become somewhat of a juggernaut that a second movie was filmed and has been released. The first one followed the adventures of Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), a basketball player and Gabriella Montez

Review - Evan Almighty
2007-08-23 07:56:00
Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) is a successful man with a dream job, a family, a nice house and a kick-ass car. The night before he started his job as Congressman, he prayed to God for some help so that he could change the world and God answered his prayers. His life started to unravel before his very eyes because of this. God (Morgan Freeman) had assigned him the task of building an ark, in preparation for the big flood. Naturally, Evan rejected the idea at first, just like Bruce did before him. Yes, this movie is the sequel to Bruce Almighty , starring Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston. Evan Baxter was Jim Carrey’s Bruce Nolan’s arch nemesis from the first movie. After he was made to believe, Evan started to build the ark, with some assistance from his family. And of course, for those who

Review - Ratatouille
2007-08-23 07:23:00
Ratatouille is the latest Pixar movie, after the slightly disappointing Cars. I saw the teaser trailer for Ratatouille as early as last year. I have to be honest and say that the trailer was boring. I had originally thought that Pixar had lost its magical touch. But then, the actual trailers for Ratatouille began circulating this year and it was kinda interesting and made me wanna go see it.It did not disappoint. I loved Ratatouille. Definitely a step up from Cars.A rat who can cook? Who would’ve thought? Okay, before I continue, I have a slight issue with that. A tangent. Bear with me. Aren’t rats supposed to be not clean aka diseased and stuff? How is it able to cook human food and not one of the humans fell sick? Okay, I am done. The story is about Remy, a rat who has a heightened sen

DVD Review - Cry_Wolf
2007-08-18 10:37:00
Another entry into the horror/slasher genre, except for the plot twist. Actually, when the twist is revealed, that’s not the actual twist ending. There is another one slightly towards the end. Elevates Cry_Wolf from a mediocre B grade movie slightly. The movie started off with a killing in the woods. It’s kinda creepy, more so than usual for a murder. The girl, running for her life, hid behind a tree. The killer could not find her and whipped out a cellphone. The killer then dialed the girl’s number. Her cell phone rang, giving away her position and the killer finished her off with a gun. Unconventional for a slasher flick eh?Then, we get to Owen (Julian Morris), who’s just arriving to West Lake, after being kicked out of his old school. He immediately took a liking to the bad girl,

Showcase - Samsons
2007-08-13 07:31:00
My friends and I were invited by a journalist friend of ours to go see the Samsons showcase at PGRM (sponsored by DiGi). I know of Samsons and I have heard some of their songs but I am not a big fan so I was a little hesitant. But since it was free, I decided to go. It was a bit weird for the event to be held at PGRM. We did not know whether it was a showcase or a concert. But we took a leap of faith and guessed that it was a showcase since the venue was not really conducive for a concert.I brought my camera but I don’t know whether I could bring it in or not. Also, I did not really know where we’d be in the hall. We might just be placed at the very back. I guess I did not really know how connected that journo friend of ours because we got the VVIP tickets and we were shown to our seat

Spotlight - Cloverfield
2007-08-08 11:01:00
Apparently there was a trailer shown before Transformers that’s creating a lot of buzz in America. Not in Malaysia though. Yet. So I thought I oughta share it with you guys. The trailer had no title, no info whatsoever. I saw it and it was quite interesting. I am intrigued. Now, all kinds of info had been released about it. It’s called Cloverfield and its release date is January 18, 2008. Yeah, I know it’s not really that soon but I think it’s going to be worth it.JJ Abrams, who brought you Felicity, Alias and Lost, is producing. Matt Reeves, who directed a bunch of JJ’s shows, is directing and Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay. For those not in the know, Drew Goddard is tall, talented and apparently quite dreamy. He wrote Selfless, the Anya-centric episode of Buffy the Vampire Sla

Review - Rise: Blood Hunter
2007-08-06 09:41:00
Vampires. Undead creatures of the night. A lot of movies have dealt with the topic of vampirism such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Underworld, Ultraviolet, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Lost Boys, Blade etc.The latest installment of the vampire lore is Rise: Blood Hunter and it stars Lucy Liu (of Charlie’s Angels and Ally McBeal fame). Lucy Liu plays Sadie Blake, a reporter who infiltrates cults to get her stories. Unfortunately for her, the latest news article she wrote drew the attention of a vampire gang and she was taken out before she could dig deeper. She woke up in the morgue, disoriented and confused, until she realized that she had been turned into a vampire. After a messy first feeding, she tried to kill herself but she found out the hard way that vampires

Review - Disturbia
2007-08-06 09:30:00
Shia Labeouf is quite the busy man this summer. First he fought off robot invaders in Transformers and then he went surfing with Jon Heder in Surf’s Up. Now he shows up fending off a serial killer that happens to live next door to him and his mother.Disturbia is about Kale, who is under house arrest after attacking his teacher. Since he cannot leave the house and his mother had taken away his privileges (iTunes, X-Box 360), he had to get creative at passing the time. One day, he noticed the new neighbor’s hot daughter and she became his voyeur obsession. But he also watched his other neighbors as well. At the same time, there had been a rash of disappearances in town. One day, after watching the news, he saw his next door neighbor driving home in the exact same car as the one reported i

Review - 1408
2007-08-06 09:23:00
Horror movies normally have a female protagonist. You can hardly catch a horror movie with a male as a leading character. I guess it has something to do with the fact that a girl in trouble is far more effective than a guy.1408 defies that rule of thumb and has a male lead. John Cusack plays the main character, Mike Enslin, who is an author who tries to debunk the supernatural phenomenon. He goes around the country, looking for haunted spots and he’d spend the night, hoping to catch the paranormal in action. Unfortunately, he never does. One day, he got a postcard, warning him not to go to Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York. Of course, Enslin would go but he hit a snag with the hotel management who adamantly refused to give him the room. His curiosity piqued, he went out of his

Review - The Simpsons Movie
2007-08-01 06:11:00
What can I say about The Simpsons that hasn’t already been said? It’s the longest running cartoon show on TV. It’s been on for 18 seasons already. The Simpsons broke all barriers when it first debut as a cartoon about a dysfunctional family in Springfield. I guess this cartoon paved way for other dysfunctional family shows such as Family Guy and American Dad. A Simpsons movie had been talked about for years and now, finally, the yellow-skinned family has arrived on the big screen and what a treat it was.The storyline is simple. Homer made a big blunder and the entire Springfield community wanted them dead so they ran to Alaska. However, when they found out that Springfield was about to be destroyed, they came back to help. Of course, there’s more to it than that but I can’t real

Review - Vacancy
2007-07-18 06:30:00
Snuff films are a little bit like an urban legend. I have heard about it but I personally haven’t seen it. But I am sure it exists. Slasher flicks are almost always money makers, so I am sure some warped mind somewhere have taken it to a different level by making actual snuff films.Anyway, Vacancy is about said snuff films. A married-but-on-the-verge-of-divorce couple traveled off the highway to avoid a car pile up but ended up getting lost in the lonesome back roads. Reminds you of any other movies? Plenty of movies about people who traveled in a car but did not stick to their plans such as Jeepers Creepers, Joyride, Wrong Turn, House of Wax and most recently, The Hitcher. All of these people ended fighting for their lives right? Sigh. You’d think that people would have learned by now
