Should Feds Extend Hybrid Tax Credit?
2007-01-18 04:59:00
Toyota wants an extension of a federal tax credit that has offered savings of up to $3,150 to buyers of hybrid cars, but other automakers aren't as enthusiastic, USA Today reported.Toyota's Prius received the biggest tax break of $3,150, but the world's biggest hybrid maker has reached the 60,000-hybrid-sales limit set by Congress in legislation that gave income tax breaks for hybrid cars."The cap should be raised for us to allow us to expand," Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor North America, said. "Demand for Prius declined when there was a step down in hybrid tax credits. We need to have a certain volume to get the mainstream in for economies of scale."So far, Toyota appears to be largely alone in seeking reauthorization of the subsidies, the story said.John Mendel, senior vice president of Honda's U.S. division, told USA Today: "I'm not sure it's a good deal." Hybrid s "are a bridge technology to something else," he added.Nancy Gioia, director of sustainable mobility technol

Terrazzo surface from recycled tubs, sinks and toilets.
2007-01-14 00:00:00
Thinking outside the box is something EnviroGLAS Products principal Tim Whaley does well. Nicknamed "Scrappy", the Texas entrepreneur was granted a U.S. patent in 2003 for developing the "method of making a terrazzo surface from recycled glass.' The idea for combining the multi-colored crystals with epoxy resin to create recycled glass terrazzo came to him after he saw a news story in July 2002 about Plano, Texas's overabundance of crushed recycled glass. Two years and several awards later (including the Recycling Alliance of Texas's 2003 "Closing the Loop Program" award and the Texas Environmental Excellence Award for small business in 2005) Whaley is at it again. This time it was the City of Dallas who asked him if he could do anything with a bunch of old toilets and commodes. The juices started flowing and soon EnviroMODEâ„¢ was born. This brand new terrazzo surface is made from recycled tubs, sinks and toilets. It's easy to maintain, durable, eco-friendly and beauti

Organic clothing not just for hippies anymore
2007-02-10 03:25:00
High fashion is going granola. But not the grunge of hippie yoga wear and grainy hemp T-shirts typically associated with organic clothes.Think soft soy dresses, cropped organic terry jackets and slim fit organic denim jeans to pair with stilettos, not flip flops. Organic cotton, which makes up 95 percent of organic fabrics, is the driving force behind the trend. Global organic cotton sales increased 119 percent, from $245 million to $583 million between 2001 and 2005. Sales are expected to reach more than $2 billion by the end of 2008, according to the Organic Exchange, a nonprofit trade association that works to expand the use of organically grown cotton. MDI Air Car - Technology Uses Air-compressed Engine
2007-03-13 00:33:00
One of the many challenges of today's society is maintaining our lifestyle with minimal repercussions to the environment. This is why Guy Nègre has invented a "zero pollution" car which involves no combustion. The MDI car can reach a speed of 68 mph and has a road coverage of roughly 124 miles -some 8 hours of travel- which is more than double the road coverage of an electric car. When recharging the tank, the car needs to be connected to the mains (220V) for 3 to 4 hours or attached to an air pump in a petrol station for only 2 minutes.Economy and the ecological benefits are the main advantages for the client since the car´s maintenance cost is 10 times less than that of a petrol-run car, costing 1 pound for the car to travel for up to 8 hours or to cover 124 miles in an Urban area.Learn More about this technology from MDI at Theaircar.com.
