Father's and the HIV Issue 2008-03-04 08:19:38 I was casually thinking through the numerous books I have read on parenting and other family related topics the other day and a single thought struck me like an atomic bomb: I cannot recall ever reading a chapter or section from any of the parenting/family books that discuss the issue of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV/AIDS. Now perhaps I have not read enough of these kinds of books and perhaps the authors of the books I have read felt this discussion was better left to the medical journals or other such mediums. However, given the climate of our culture we live in I think there would be great value to an open and candid discussion on this specific matter within the context of parental protection in the lives of our children. What I am specifically going to deal with is that if fa Read more:Father
HIV Education, part one 2008-02-29 15:12:58 I have decided to use my blog to further discuss the HIV/AIDS pandemic in a more formal fashion. I will be doing so in a number of ways. The first way I have already started by talking about some facts related to the pandemic and then offering some editorial comments. The other way will be strictly educational, starting with this post.
What you are about to see is a 3-D animation of the HIV-1 replication. It is very informative.

Homeschooling and HIV 2008-02-26 06:12:19 In my last article I took a survey of the HIV / AIDS pandemic in the United States and offered a number of facts and concerns related directly to it. The main point, in case you missed it, stressed the importance of parental guidance and teaching on this most dangerous issue. In fact, every parent should be teaching their children about all forms of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's), including HIV. It should also be pointed out that Hepatitis C is as deadly as HIV and there is currently no cure. Hepatitis C is transmitted in the same way as HIV.
For some who frequent my blog on a regular basis these series of articles are certainly off the normal path of what I typically write about. My wife says I have a new found passion about a subject that very much concerns me. If I am suc Read more:Homeschooling
HIV Class 2008-02-23 06:51:05 NOTE: This is a VERY serious issue. Please read it completely
This past week I was in Fairfax, Virginia attending training meetings for my company, Harris Teeter. On Tuesday morning I attended a "Managing HIV at Work" workshop where I sat through 4 hours of HIV and AIDS related information. Going into this class I thought that I knew pretty much all there was to know about HIV and AIDS however I did learn some interesting facts:
The two most common ways for HIV to infect a person is through unprotected sex and sharing an infected needle. This accounts for 95 percent of all infections in the United States.
Each year over 63,000 Americans become newly infected with HIV, a rate unchanged since the beginning of the epidemic.
Every hour at least two Americans under the age of 27 become i

Only a Matter of Time! 2008-02-22 07:37:14 Well it was only a matter of time! I have been driving since I was 19 years old and, prior to yesterday, have been pulled over 10 times for speeding without getting a ticket. Now don't try to figure out why I never received a ticket because I don't have some magic cure or words or sentence that somehow gets me out of it. I have always done what my dear dad has told me: "Son, if you get pulled over be nice and speak to the officer with respect". Well, yesterday on my way home from business meetings in Washington, DC I was pulled over by a Virginia State Trooper in an unmarked car (it was following me for some time!) and given a ticket for 79 in a 65 MPH zone. Am I upset about it? Nope! I deserved it. The officer was very respectful and we had a small conversation through my drivers

CDC Study on STD's 2008-03-22 07:06:19 A new report released from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has some alarming information. Well, you decide for yourself. Here is the report in its entirety:
Chicago (March 11, 2008) – A CDC study released today estimates that one in four (26 percent) young women between the ages of 14 and 19 in the United States – or 3.2 million teenage girls – is infected with at least one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (human papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia, herpes simplex virus, and trichomoniasis). The study, presented today at the 2008 National STD Prevention Conference, is the first to examine the combined national prevalence of common STDs among adolescent women in the United States, and provides the clearest picture to date of the overall STD burden in ad Read more:Study

Courtship and Dating Ponderings 2008-04-26 05:27:00 Due to recent events in my own family life I have had occasion to seriously consider the issue of biblical courtship and dating. To be honest, I really do not have all of this sorted out in my own mind. To me, the issue is far more complex than some of the books and articles I have read no this topic. Pehaps some of my readers would be nterested in offering their own perspectives on this topic in the comments section. I will be offering more of my own thoughts later. Read more:Courtship

Wait . . . Haven’t I Heard This Before? 2008-04-27 16:23:09 HT: The Avenue
Just heard about a proposed decision on a recent case in the PCA that had been appealed to the Standing Judicial Commission. There are a number of interesting points in the proposed decision of the majority but look at this one:
The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church in America is of course subject to and subordinate to the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. We need to be able to affirm that the use of words in our Standards is faithful to Scriptural intent and meaning. However, we cannot now argue that because the Constitution uses a word in a single way, the church must restrict its formal use of that word to the manner in which it is used in the Constitution. To do so would be to subject the Scriptures to our Standards, and effectively sever the tie that all Read more:Haven

HIV/AIDS Volunteer Work 2008-05-08 03:48:52 Along with my duties as the President of the Norfolk, Va. chapter of He Intends Victory, a Christian based outreach ministry to those affected by HIV/AIDS
, I am also being considered as a volunteer with ACCESS AIDS/Norfolk. Today at 10 AM I will be discussing this opportunity with them and would appreciate your prayers. Although this is not a Christian based organization this will give me some opportunity to work with those who are inflicted with ADIS and perhaps give me some chance to discuss the gospel of Jesus Christ with them.
Also, please pray for the He Intends Victory ministry team of Hampton Roads as we are in the process of meeting to discuss a proposal to Hampton High School regarding HIV awareness and counseling. We are very excited for this opportunity and we would covet y Read more:Volunteer

Trip to Yankee Stadium Draws Near 2008-05-17 18:01:11 As many of you know, I am a huge Yankee

that I have looked forward to for many weeks. I am so obsessed about this trip that I have been checking the weather for the New York City area quite often. So far it looks like the weather will cooperate for the game (Tuesday at 7:05 PM).

Yankee Stadium Trip 2008-05-22 06:00:37 I have returned from my trip to New York City and my visit to YankeeStadium

Pursuit of Holiness 2008-06-19 02:10:28 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." ( 1 Peter 1.15, 16 ESV )

Song in the Public Worship of God 2008-07-11 02:25:25 I have not yet figured out why people have a general aversion to singing the Psalms in worship. Psalm singing has a long and true history in our Reformed and Presbyterian heritage as well as in the Confessions that make up the doctrinal positions of Reformed churches worldwide. Most people I know would agree that singing the Psalms is more beneficial but yet we continue to settle for second best Read more:Public
Reformed Worship 2008-07-08 10:15:37 I have been looking over a new acquisition to my growing library and stumbled upon this amazing paragraph discussing the type of music that ought to characterize Reformed
worship:
Sing the Bible-- Our songs should be rich with Biblical and theological content. The current divisions over music are at the heart of our worship wars. Yet some principles should be easy enough to identify. First, wh
