Wireless sensors extend Internet's reach 2007-02-19 08:58:00 But critics say networks can be prone to malicious security attacks !!!LOS ANGELES - To the untrained eye, the sleek, airy building constructed atop a decommissioned nuclear reactor at the University of California, Los Angeles could pass for high-tech office space. A closer inspection of the glass-and-steel facade reveals dozens of miniature, low-resolution cameras and sensors
. They're wirelessly linked to computers throughout the 6,000-square-foot space, keeping tabs on traffic flow in public areas and monitoring temperature, humidity and acoustics. The building serves as a testing ground for developing and perfecting wireless sensing technology to connect major chunks of the real world to the Internet
. Such networks could monitor the environment for pollutants, gauge whether structures are at risk of collapse or remotely follow medical patients in real time. "I see this as the next wave of extending the Internet into the physical world," said computer scientist Deborah Estrin, who Read more:Wireless

The company pledged that the new software would render e-mails and other documents much as they appear on desktop computers. Samsung unveils iPhone-like handset 2007-02-19 08:51:00 Ultra Smart F700 has slide-out key pad, large touch-screen!!!SEOUL, South Korea - Samsung
Electronics Co. has unveiled a new mobile phone that features some of the sleek design and functions of Apple Inc.'s much-hyped iPhone
. Samsung's Ultra Smart F700 will be exhibited at next week's 3GSM World Congress, a telecommunications exhibition in Barcelona, Samsung spokeswoman Sonia Kim said Friday. Mobile phone makers have been scrambling to match the iPhone, unveiled last month by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The device, which will be available starting in June, marks the iPod and Macintosh computer maker's entry into the mobile phone business. The ultra-thin iPhone is controlled by a large touch screen. It plays music, surfs the Internet, and runs a version of the Mac OS X operating system, among other functions. Samsung said the Ultra Smart F700 also has a full touch screen as well as a traditional QWERTY key pad that slides out "for users who are not yet familiar with a touch-screen-only
Search engine trawls Castro speeches, not Web 2007-02-19 08:46:00 HAVANA - Cuba built an Internet search engine that allows users to trawl through speeches
by Cuban leader Fidel Castro
and other government sites, but does not browse Web pages outside the island. The search engine unveiled at a conference this week underscored restrictions on Internet access in communist-run Cuba, which the government blames on U.S. trade sanctions. Cubans cannot buy computers and Internet access is limited to state employees, academics and foreigners. Cubans line up for hours to send e-mails on post office terminals that cannot surf the World Wide Web. Passwords are sold on the black market allowing shared Internet use for limited hours, usually at night. Cuba's first search engine can search any subject, but only on Cuban servers, or the Cuban intranet, including 150,000 government sites and the state-run media. It has a special function key on the homepage to browse through hundreds of Castro's speeches since day one of his revolution in 1959. "The aim is to Read more:Search
Scientist: Frog could be 25 million years old 2007-02-19 08:41:00 Tiny amphibian was found completely preserved in amber!!!MEXICO CITY - A Mexican researcher announced the rare find of a tiny tree frog completely preserved in amber on Wednesday that he estimates lived about 25 million
years ago. The chunk of amber containing the 0.4-inch frog was uncovered by a miner in southern Chiapas states in 2005 and was bought by a private collector, who lent it to scientists for study. Only a few preserved frogs have been found in chunks of amber — a stone formed by ancient tree sap — mostly in the Dominican Republic. Like those, the frog found in Chiapas was of the genus Craugastor, whose relatives still inhabit the region Biologist Gerardo Carbot of the Chiapas Natural History and Ecology Institute, who announced the discovery, said it was the first such frog found in amber in Mexico. Carbot said he would like to extract a sample from the frog's remains to see if they contain well-preserved DNA, in order to identify the frog's species. However, he e

Daylight-saving glitch threatens mini-Y2K 2007-02-19 08:31:00 Software bug could skew everything from Outlook to airline schedules !!!!!!---------------------------------------------------------Daylight
saving time arrives a little earlier — March 11 — and stays a little later — Nov. 4 — this year. And it's bringing a problem along with it that could affect everything from stock trades to airline schedules to your BlackBerry.Software created before the law mandating the change passed in 2005 is set to automatically advance its timekeeping by one hour on the first Sunday in April, not the second Sunday in March. Congress decided that more early evening daylight would translate into energy savings. The result is a glitch
reminiscent of the Y2K bug, when cataclysmic crashes were feared if computers interpreted the year 2000 as 1900 and couldn't reconcile time appearing to move backward. If banks and other institutions aren't properly prepared, automatic stock trades reportedly might happen at the wrong hour, buildings that unlock at a ce
Google Apps Suite to Include Docs, Spreadsheets 2007-02-20 11:29:00 Google is finalizing the integration of Docs & Spreadsheets

The introduction of the new version of Google Apps for Your Domain including Docs & Spreadsheets will happen this quarter, and it could come as early as next week, several people familiar with the company's plans said. It has been widely assumed that at some point Google would add Docs & Spreadsheets, a word processing and a spreadsheet program, to Google Apps, a suite of communication services for organizations. Docs & Spreadsheets lets multiple users share files and collaborate on them. Google Apps provides white-label versions of several Google communication services, including the Gmail Web mail service, the Talk instant message and voice chat service and the Calendar online sched Read more:Google

o2 XDA Stealth 2007-02-20 11:22:00 The o2 Stealth is one of the first Windows Mobile Pocket PC to have a vertical slider with a numeric key pad. Similar designs like the HTC Wizard, T-Mobile MDA, and the Cingular 8525 are all pocket PC's with slide out keyboards but are missing the numeric keypad. When you have a Pocket PC there are times that you simply wish to dial a number not by pulling out your stylus or tap the display with you fingers. Since HTC is not manufacturing phones for o2 anymore, other companies are taking their place. The o2 Stealth is made by Gigabyte Communications from Taiwan who have been bringing many new Windows Mobile devices to the market as of late. How is the o2 Stealth overall? Does it compete with other HTC devices released by o2? Read on to find out!!Before the o2 stealth, the only Windows mobile devices that had a numeric keypad were Smartphones. Motorola MPX220 2007-02-20 11:18:00 The Motorola
MPx 220 is not a new phone to the market, in fact it is a couple years old. Old does not always necessarily mean bad because this phone can offer some of the same features that new phones offer. The MPx 220 in my opinion is one of the most beautiful flip phone's to be released thus far. The chrome panel on the front of the phone makes it stand out like no other. The MPx 220 is a Windows Mobile Smartphone and runs the 2003 version. The MPx comes in two colors; silver and black. The MPx 220 has an excellent design and looks awesome. The front of the phone has a chrome panel which makes the phone stand out. The phone comes in two colors; black and silver. The black version is not quite black but very dark maroon which looks black. The flip mechanism on the phone is great. When you open or close the phone you can hear a clicking sound which makes it secure. The camera is located on the front flip beside the LED flash.
Samsung SGH-X830 Black 2007-02-20 11:12:00 The Samsung
X830 is half Mp3 player and half phone. The X830 looks exactly like an iPod when closed. In my opinion the X830 is the Samsung version of the "iPhone". When closed the phone looks like a normal MP3 player but when open looks like a cell phone. The dial jog on the phone resembles that of the iPod but works a little different. The phone currently comes in four colors: black, white, orange and pink, but more colors are expected to hit the market soon. The X830 has 1 GB memory built in, and others may have up to 4GB in the near future. Is the X830 a good alternative to the "iPhone" being released by Apple? How is the phone overall? READ ON TO FIND OUT!!!Overall the design is excellent. Apart from copying the iPod's looks, the phone looks awesome. The one I am reviewing is the pearl white color, which looks like an iPod shuffle. Overall the X830 is very small in size and measures only 84x30x19 mm.The X830's keypad is hidden when closed. The phone swivels out like the Read more:Black

. Currently two Glofiish models have been released; the Glofiish X500 and M700. They are ETEN's high end models, offering features that other models do not. The X500 has built in GPS, Wi-Fi, FM radio and a 400 MHz processor. It is similar to the HTC P3300 offering the same features, but which one comes out on top?Currently the X500 is the thinnest Pocket PC available on the market and measures only 15.5mm in thickness. The phone's width is almost the same as the P3300's but it is a bit taller. The front of the X500's housing is silver and the back is fitted with a smooth black plate. The X500 has a four-way directional pad located under the screen. Nokia n91 Gray 2007-02-20 11:04:00 Any handset make with a music phone on the market will now have to face the inevitable comparison to a certain computer company's newly unveiled entry into the mobile marketplace. However as flashy as the iPhone looks to be, companies like Nokia
, Sony Ericsson, and LG have been equipping cell phones with digital music players for quite awhile now.Nokia's N91 is something of a breakthrough product in that its one of the first mobile phones to pack an onboard hard drive for media storage that measures in the Gigabytes, not Megabytes. With 4GB of onboard storage (an 8GB special edition model is also available), the N91 has the same capacity as an iPod nano, making it a true contender to the "Holy Grail of Convergence" sought by manufacturers looking to replace your phone and music player with one device.Problem is, as good as the N91 looks on paper, it doesn't quite deliver in hand. The handset isn't lacking in features, what with WiFi connectivity, a 2MP camera, and Symbian Series 60

TOMTOM is known world wide for their GPS programs and it is nice to see that it comes preinstalled with the phone. A new exciting feature on the phone is the built in mouse. Like the Blackberry pearl, the P3300 has a little trackball but can also be used to control the onboard mouse. The HTC P3300 is also known as the HTC Artemis, O2 Orbit and MDA compact III. Although the phone offers an extensive list of features, how is it overall? Is the mouse really necessary? What's the GPS like? READ ON TO FIND OUT!!The P3300 looks awesome plain and simple. NOKIA N73 2007-02-20 10:57:00 Sometimes I wonder what the mobile phone industry would be like if each manufacturer was limited to, say, five new releases per year. Ideally they'd be forced to divvy up their wares into clearly defined segments and make one exemplary model per segment. For instance, a company might make one excellent smartphone, one super high-end multimedia phone, one slim/fashion phone, one solid mid-range phone, and one inexpensive or specialty phone. And that's it. That way if you wanted a high-end multimedia phone you'd only have to choose which company's version you prefer ... and not from the four or five models offered by each company, each with a slightly different feature set, form factor, and design.Alas, we live in a free market economy and as such are subject to the good and the bad that comes with almost unlimited choice in the marketplace. So rather than offering us a single ultimate multimedia phone, Nokia gives us the entire N-series, a range of mobile devices that includes the "
HTC Excalibur 2007-02-20 10:54:00 HTC has done it again, introducing their first one-handed QWERTY Smartphone: the HTC Excalibur
. The Excalibur is also known as the T-Mobile DASH and the HTC S620. The S620 is a direct competitor of the Motorola Q but offers a lot more features in a smaller more compact design. The Motorola Q GSM version has still not been released and the S620 may take all of its potential sales. The S620 has Windows Mobile 5, 200 MHz processor, built in Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE. The S620 is smaller than the Q and has better battery life too. Is the Excalibur worth getting? Should you renew your contract to get it? Read on to find out!!The S620 is very small in size. Compared to the Motorola Q, the it is smaller in length but slightly thicker in width. The whole phone has a soft rubber feel and comes in black. The phone was designed very well. One design aspect of this phone I liked a lot is where the expandable memory is located. Usually phone's expandable memory is either located on the out side or und
Nokia N80 Review 2007-02-20 10:52:00 IntroductionWhy is it that so many mobile phones are almost perfect, but none can quite achieve perfection? I'm not talking about "You can't please all of the people all of the time" type imperfection, either. I'm talking about design and functionality choices that leave me scratching my head and asking, "What were they thinking?"The Nokia
N80 is a perfect example of the incredible frustration caused by an almost perfect product. With a 3 megapixel camera, high-resolution display, Symbian OS, and built-in WiFI, the N80 looks to be the perfect phone — on paper. But once in hand, I found two of the N80's flaws, in particular, annoying enough to make me pull my SIM card and put the phone back in its box.Granted, I took the N80's $599 retail price into account when considering said flaws. So don't get me wrong: the N80 is a seriously powerful device with alot going for it. But if you spent $600 on a mobile phone, you'd want perfection, too, right?DesignThe N80 is a little brick of
Samsung SGH-T629 Review 2007-02-20 10:50:00 IntroductionSliders, sliders everywhere but nary a black one in sight. Samsung
's new t629 slider phone takes the place of the t809 in T-Mobile's lineup, trading in all-black chic for silver sleek while leaving the rest of the handset mainly the same. Why the change? Is the t629 really any better than the t809 it replaces? I guess that depends on which you prefer, black or silver. As the adage goes, beauty is only skin deep, and there are some notable changes to this latest Samsung slider - most importantly, perhaps, being compatibility with T-Mobile's new "myFaves" service plan. The t629 carries on Samsung's tradition of making head-turning handsets with brilliant displays, though it lacks the t809's ingenious swivel camera housing. On the other hand, it makes up for one of the t809's major shortcomings: battery life. Read on to get the scoop. DesignAt 99 x 51 x 14mm, or just over half an inch thick, the t629 certainly qualifies as a slim phone, if not quite as thin as Samsung
Sony Ericsson M600i Review 2007-02-20 10:47:00 IntroductionFull disclosure up front: The SonyEricsson
m600i smartphone is not for everyone. It has some quirks and flaws, and the fact that it's only compatible with European high speed networks is a major shortcoming for a smartphone to be used in the U.S.That being said, I love this phone. There's no camera and I still love this phone. I'm a righty and the jog wheel is placed for left thumb scrolling and I still love this phone. The first m600i I got my hands on had buggy firmware and wouldn't connect to the Internet and I still love this phone. Why? Because it's so elegant and pretty that I like using it. Sometime's it's just that simple.A lot of the reasons I like using the m600i have to do with the UIQ 3.0 interface it's running on top of Symbian OS 9.1. That and the phone's clean, simple look and it's innovative QWERTY keypad. This hardware/software duo makes the m600i one of the most elegant phones I've ever had the pleasure of using. Of course some people find tha Read more:Sony Ericsson
BlackBerry RIM 8100 Pearl Review 2007-02-20 10:40:00 IntroductionBlackBerry
PDA phones have become so synonymous with on-the-go email over that terms like "BlackBerry Thumb" (a form of Repetitive Stress Injury) and "BlackBerry Addiction" (a form of, well, addiction) are becoming part of our cultural lexicon. Ask around and odds are you know at least a few people who own BlackBerries, and at least one who feels utterly naked without theirs.BlackBerry has recently introduced it's first "consumer model," the T-Mobile exclusive BlackBerry Pearl
8100. The Pearl is not only the smallest BlackBerry ever, but it's also the first to incorporate multimedia features generally deemed unnecessary by the traditionally corporate BlackBerry clientele. With a 1.3 MP camera and media player in its corner, can the Pearl win the masses over to the BlackBerry way of life? Maybe. The Pearl is an eye-catching phone that packs a ton of functionality into its shiny little body. But it's half-dialing/half-typing keypad is tiny and evidence of BlackBerry's corp

Google Says Diagnostics Don't Catch Many PC Drive Failure 2007-02-22 06:41:00 Built-in disk drive diagnostics only predict about half the drive failures that occur, Google
said after studying thousands of drives.Google research has shown that built-in disk drive diagnostics only predict about half the drive failures that occur. Modern disk drives have a built-in self-test and diagnostic facility termed Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology--SMART. The drive firmware monitors a range of drive parameters, things like the number of seek errors and the disk spin-up time. If these parameters degrade over time it may indicate the unit is heading for a breakdown. With advance warning of an impending disk failure you will have a chance to move files and/or replace the unit before you lose any data. Google's study looked at more than one hundred thousand disk drives which were a combination of serial and parallel ATA consumer-grade hard disk drives, ranging in speed from 5400 to 7200 rpm, and in size from 80 to 400 GB. The observed range of annualized fa Read more:Diagnostics

DVD Burning Tips: How to Avoid the Top Five Disc-Burning Mistakes 2007-02-22 06:38:00 A few precautions can help ensure that the CDs and DVDs you burn will play successfullyCD/DVD recorders and media are pretty mature and stable products at this point. But if you aren't careful, a bad burn could still happen--and leave you with only a bicycle reflector for your effort. Here are the five most common disc-burning errors, and how to avoid them. 1. You didn't verify: If there's a golden rule for burning discs, it's "Thou shalt verify." Using your burning software's verify (or validate) function to compare what has been written with what was read is your best hedge against nasty surprises down the road (see FIGURE 1). The verify function won't increase your chances of burning a disc successfully, but it will let you know of a problem in time to burn another disc. Many a seemingly successful burn will bug out when you play it--not because the disc has gone bad, but because the burn was bad to begin with. 2. It's the wrong media: In a perfect world, choos Read more:Burning

Cisco Backtracks on Open Source Promise 2007-02-22 06:30:00 A Cisco
official said today that the company has not made up its mind yet about the future of its CTA software After promising to turn the client software for its CTA (Cisco Trust Agent) into an open-source application, Bob Gleichauf, CTO of Cisco's Security Technology Group, said that the company has not made up its mind yet about the future of the software. "Where I misspoke was speaking in terms of CTA going open source as if that's a given, and that was incorrect. That was my mistake," Gleichauf told InfoWorld last week. "It has been part of a discussion of a number of different options available to us, but it's not a viable option at this time," he said. A more circumspect Gleichauf said that in earlier comments he was just speculating that CTA might be turned into an open-source component. "Open source was one thing that's a way of dealing with various components as work toward an integrated solution," he noted He declined to discuss the pros and cons of going open source Read more:Backtracks

Sleek BlackBerry 8800 Lacks Some Features 2007-02-22 06:19:00 The BlackBerry
8800 smart phone is a departure from previous BlackBerries. It is both more mainstream and more refined. But it also suffers from some missing features that diminish the attractiveness of this otherwise elegant device. After its successful foray into the consumer market with the black berry perl, Research In Motion. RIM set out to give the 8800 a bit more swagger than previous business-oriented BlackBerries. As is typically the case with RIM, everything it did on the 8800, it did very well. But many users will miss some of the features that RIM chose not to support, most notably 3G and Wi-Fi. Bottom line: We liked the BlackBerry 8800 a lot. Depending on your needs, however, you may not be as enthusiastic. New Look and Feel The first thing you're likely to notice about the BlackBerry 8800 is that it looks and feels less like older BlackBerry models and more like the current crop of best-selling smart phones, such as the Motorola Q and Samsung BlackJack. It's still a Read more:Sleek

However , that was expected and what was not expected is that Saif has been nominated in 'Star Of The Year-Male'(equivalent of 'Best Actor') and 'Best Actor In Negative Role' for the same performance !One just wonders why Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan were not shown the same magnanimity for their performances in 'Dhoom:2' and 'Don' , as both find a place in the nominations , but only in the 'Star Of The Year-Male' category .
