Sony Vaio VGX-TP1 2007-02-05 09:26:00 An eye-catching design and quiet operation make this Media Center PC a living-room contender, though it's a bit pricey given its feature set.The Sony
VAIO VGX-TP1 is certainly eye-catching: This white-gray circle looks more like a stand to place something on than a PC. But a PC it is, and it's meant to fit unobtrusively into your living room, your bedroom, or any other room where you want to watch TV and have the functionality of a Media Center PC along for the ride.Measuring about 10.6 inches in diameter and less than 4 inches in height, the unit has impressive features for its compact size. You get a 1.83-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 5600 chip, 2GB of RAM, a 300GB hard drive, integrated graphics, a multiformat DVD burner, built-in wireless capability, an ethernet port, and Windows Vista Premium Home. A matching wireless keyboard and remote that are comfortable to use and equally compact complete the package. The preproduction unit I looked at was fairly easy to set up, though I did have to

clips from YouTube
.Media conglomerate Viacom International today upbraided YouTube for continuing to host throngs of Viacom videos without permission and demanded that over 100,000 of its clips be removed from the popular video-sharing site owned by Google.Viacom, whose properties include Comedy Central, MTV, Nick at Nite, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, and VH1, ran out of patience after months of discussions with Google and YouTube, the company said in a statement. This could mean the end of second-day looks at comedy clips from The Colbert Report and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart."It has become clear that YouTube is unwilling to come to a fair market agreement that would make Viacom content available to YouTube users," the statement reads.YouTube and Google have failed to deliver efficient filtering tools, so that "vast amounts" of unauthorized Viacom video exist on the video-sharing site, the company said.YouTube acknowledged receiving a Read more:Removal
Dell Investors Sue PC Maker Over Accounting Practices 2007-02-05 09:15:00 Shortly after the resignation of its chief executive, Dell reeled from another blow as a group of investors filed a lawsuit alleging that the company had used illegal accounting methods to hide secret kickback payments paid by Intel. The payments from Intel were meant to ensure that Dell used only Intel processors in its PCs, according to the suit. The investors filing the suit Wednesday asked the U.S. District Court in Austin, Texas, to give the case class-action status, saying that Dell shareholders were harmed when Dell inflated its profits. The investors claim that Dell's profits were inflated by hundreds of millions of dollars, The Wall Street Journal reported today.Intel Denies ChargesIntel denies the charges. A Dell spokeswoman said the company did not comment on pending litigation. In May, Dell announced it would also began selling PCs and servers using chips from Intel's rival, Advanced Micro Devices. The new accusation echoes several ongoing lawsuits against the two companies. PS2 Sales Surpass Successor 2007-02-05 09:12:00 Japanese shoppers opt for older console over hard-to-find PlayStation 3.TOKYO--Sales
of the almost 7-year-old PlayStation 2 beat those of the brand-new PlayStation 3 in Japan in late January for the first time, according to sales figures published today. For the week of January 22 to January 28, sales of the PlayStation 2 totaled 20,995 units while those of the PlayStation 3 were 19,996, said Media Create. The research company receives data from around 3000 stores across Japan and uses that to estimate nationwide sales.Sony AdjustsThe figures amount to more bad news for Sony Computer Entertainment, which missed its initial shipment target for the console. The company had hoped to ship 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide between the Japan launch on November 11 and the end of 2006 but it didn't accomplish that until mid-January. It's sticking by its next shipment target of 6 million consoles by the end of March.Sales of the PlayStation 2 have been so good that Sony this week rais Read more:Successor

Intel Speeds Up Silicon Photonics 2007-01-22 19:31:00 Researchers at Intel
have announced the world's fastest silicon modulator--an advance that could cut bandwidth costs and make computers run faster and cooler.Today's computer processors are strictly electronic devices, transmitting data by means of electrons traveling through copper wires. But this technology is relatively slow and produces heat. Now, researchers at Intel have developed an optical device that could play a key role in replacing electrons and copper wires with photons and beams of light. The team has demonstrated a record-breaking silicon modulator that can encode data at a rate of 30 gigabits per second--nearly as fast as many nonsilicon modulators currently used in fiber optics hardware.A silicon modulator that can operate at these speeds, says Mario Paniccia, Intel research fellow and director of the Silicon
Photonics Technology Lab, could make it possible to design faster computers that include photonic chips. In addition, Paniccia says, it could be part of an all-

expects to cut 5000 to 7000 jobs by the end of 2007 in an effort to reduce its administrative overhead and boost profits from digital photography instead of standard film, the company told investors today.Kodak leaders had already cut 1200 jobs during the fourth quarter of 2006, bringing the total jobs lost to 23,400 since the company first announced its restructuring plan in January 2004. By the end of this year, that total could reach 30,000, nearly half of the company's size in 2003.The company has already cut excess jobs from its manufacturing division, and will trim the remaining jobs from its selling, general, and administrative unit, Kodak Chief Financial Officer Frank Sklarsky said in a release. The move will reduce administrative overhead from Kodak's current level of 18 percent of revenue to just 14 percent to 15 percent. The company h Read more:Restructuring

Salaam-E-Ishq´ - Father Salim Khan wanted Sohail´s Track Edited Out 2007-02-08 19:17:00 It can now be told . The length of 'Salaam
-E-Ishq' had always been a concern for it's makers . Around the time its first copy was to be out , the producers showed it to Salim
Khan ( of salim-Javed fame) to take an objective opinion . The veteran writer was frank enough to say that if anything could be deleted , it was his younger son Sohail Khan's entire track because , according to him ,it was not connected with other tracks in the film. However , since Sohail Khan and Isha Kopikar's scenes provided comic relief in the film ,the makers did not delete them . Anyway , that apart , one needs to admire Salim Khan because it requires a great deal of objectivity to be able to say that the scenes of one's own son need to be deleted to improve the pace of a film . King Khan´s Gift To Alma Mater 2007-02-08 19:07:00 Watching Shah Rukh Khan anchoring the third edition of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC) is not the only reason for jubilation for those associated with Hansraj College , Delhi University (DU) . Why see 'Parzania', Gujaratis ask five years after riots 2007-02-08 17:50:00 As the fifth anniversary of perhaps the most macabre sectarian conflagration in Gujarat's history approaches, there is something eerily familiar about emotions surrounding the decision not to show "Parzania
", director Rahul Dholakia's celluloid reminder of those events.A bizarre cocktail of ideological conviction, commercial calculation, unstated fear and pure bigotry has upstaged the movie's release in the state. For most ordinary Gujaratis, the decision by cinema owners not run the movie has none of the lofty dimensions of a freedom of expression debate. For them it is just another movie whose screening or lack thereof makes no difference."Ema shun? Evun to chale (What's the big deal? It is okay)", is how a young woman at Wide Angle multiplex on the city's upscale S.G. Road reacted when asked what she thought of the decision. Her young male friend was even more dismissive, albeit distinctly happy with his painful attempt at punning when he said, "We have seen the real riots

Security Vendors Nearing Extinction 2007-02-08 20:06:00 Vendors such as Microsoft and Cisco are integrating security functions into their products, making standalone products redundantStand-alone security vendors are going the way of dinosaurs. That was the assessment offered today by Art Coviello, president of RSA Security Inc., at the company's annual security conference, which is being held in San Francisco this week. RSA is EMC Corp.'s security division.Delivering a keynote address Tuesday morning, Coviello said the trend by vendors such as Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and EMC to integrate security functions into their core technologies is diminishing the need for add-on products from pure-play security vendors. RSA itself was one such stand-alone vendor until it was acquired by EMC last year."Our industry is ripe for a transformation" Coveillo said. "The transformation I am talking about will bring an end to the stand-alone security industry within two to three years." With the exception of two or three vendors, t Read more:Vendors
Was That a Vista Fix Released on Patch Tuesday? 2007-02-15 18:28:00 Researchers and customers alike are keeping close tabs on the operating system for the first confirmed vulnerabilityUsers can chalk up a critical vulnerability -- now patched -- in Windows Vista
, a Microsoft security manager said Wednesday. Though if people want to get picky, the fix for the company's malware scanning engine isn't really for a flaw in the operating system's core code. And therein lies a debate. The question of whether Vista was patched against its first remote code vulnerability may be academic in the long run, but researchers and customers alike are keeping close tabs on the operating system for the first confirmed vulnerability. Microsoft has repeatedly touted Vista as its most secure version of Windows ever.Tuesday
, it released 12 security updates to fix 20 vulnerabilities, 11 of them pegged as "critical" in the company's four-step scoring system. One of the bulletins, MS07-010, patched a critical bug in the malware scanning engine used by Microsoft's security l Read more:Patch

We are not giving official guidance to the public yet about the next version of Windows, other than that we're working on it."Kutz was replying to speculation that the next version of Windows -- with codenames ranging from "Vienna" to "Windows 7," depending on the pundit -- would be out before the end of 2009. The chatter was fueled by Ben Fathi, corporate vice president of development in Microsoft's Windows core operating system division, who spoke to reporters last week at the RSA conference. At the time, Fathi said the follow-on to Vista would likely show up in Read more:Microsoft
